Trouble installing Xwindows on debian 3.0 (woody)
Title: Trouble installing Xwindows on debian 3.0 (woody) Hi, I am a debian newbie ( coming from the mandrake world)... I am having trouble getting XFree86 to work correctly on my machine...When I run startx .. it crashes and xfree86config suggests running SuperProbe to get the right characteristics for my video card before re-running the config. But I cant find SuperProbe on my system ( I did a search ) Is there a simple utility that I could run which will detect all the hardware and select the right options (like Mandrake does SO WELL)... Thanks. _srini

I suggest first creating /dev/mouse, if your using a ps2 mouse something like: cd /dev ; ln -s psaux mouse I am not aware of some 'catchall' debian-specific utility. something else that would help is if you told the list what video card you use. if it's something like 810 or 815 or some other strange chipset it may be more difficult then just X -probeonly or even xf86config. There is a tool called anxious, which tries to do what you want, but last time I tried it, it could only detect a few different cards. if your using a nvidia card and want 3d acceleration you need to compile and install the modules for it. nate -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of unsubscribe. But should not they start with net-install CD image. 3 full CD images are too much. I downloaded the first CD image, not all three of them. To answer your question I went back to the documents I used to install the system. There is no explicit advise to download complete ISOs. It's either buying cds or downloading the netinstall. You are right about that. I just thought the netinstall was too scary. I was using Windows and wanted to install Debian. I made bootfloppies and mounted the ISO from my Windows-partition. Got the base system running, installed pppoe and Lynx and the rest is history. Since I wasn't sure I could get anything to work (i.e. network), I knew I had at least access to the different packages. In hindsight perhaps not the smartest move, everything worked like a charm. But if it didn't it would have been awful to boot into Windows for new software or information available on the internet (rinse, wipe, repeat). To be honest, I would propably do it again :). I think a lot of people who come to Debian for the first time start out as lusers and then quickly become users. Perhaps the available information regarding the install doesn't reflect that. Hi List, I recently downloaded Debian Potato Distribution in 3 cds. I dumped everything into three directories in dos partition C:\debian\disk1, c:\debian\disk2 and c:\debian\disk3 And then, I booted from dosutils and installed everything with apt-setup( I changed the source to file:/mnt/debian/disk1 potato main/contrib etc. ) But now, it has not installed xwindows.
