apt-cache search ticker

Also, your mail system is broken, this showed up three times on-list.

Don't know about a stand alone application, but if you use Jabber for
IM'ing there are a few servers that provide RSS feeds of popular
news/information sites.

I had experimented with just about everything reported by that -
ticker itself is for text messages to a console (system/user
generated) and most all of the others are for KDE/Gnome/WM... Thanks for
the suggestion though.

Sorry about that - It was reporting failure to deliver to the list, in
fact it was failing to deliver to another list! ( my fault for
attempting to cross-post )

I found Amphetadesk (http://www.disobey.com/amphetadesk/) which will
run in your browser (dillo) and aggregate the news feeds you assign -
seems to work great so far, if anyone else is looking for something
similar.

TY,

I don't believe blagg is packaged, but it's just a short
script. blosxom is packaged in sid, at least.

The two of them make it easy to set something like this up:
http://www.mcgroarty.net/inkfeed/

blagg is used to grab from rss feeds (you can do it in a cron job if
you like), and blosxom is used to publish the data.

The advantage of this approach is that you can read from any machine
with a web browser if you set it up on a net-facing machine, and you
can style it however you please.

You could use gkrellm-newsticker. If you use sid, you should not use the
current version of gkrellm with gkrellm-newsticker, as
gkrellm-newsticker (like some of the other plugins) doesn't work if the
gkrellm version is = 2.

Alternately, you could do something like what I have done (and is not X
dependant), and write your own script. I wanted something similar to
what you want, but I wanted it for the console. My script is a little
long to send to the list (365 lines), but if you want to take a look at
it, let me know, and I'll send a tarball containing it.
