dist-upgrade from stable to testing
After apt-get update, apt-get dist-upgrade to testing, I got a successful download of 166 MB. But during the install/config, I saw this message: mv: cannot create regjular file '/etc/exim/exim.conf' ; No such file or directory. dpkg: error processing /var/cach/apt/archives/exim_3.31-1_i386.deb (--unpack); subprocess pre-installaation script returned error exit status 1 Starting MTA exim This was followed by several lines that look okay and then by Errors were encountered while processing: /var/cache/apt/archives/exim_3.31-1_i386.deb E: Subprocess /usr/bin/dpkg returned an error code (1) This was followed by my root prompt. I checked, and exim.conf is directly under /etc, and I have no exim directory under /etc, which I presume was the problem. My question is , what should I do next? Do I have to repeat the dist-upgrade, or even do something worse? The box I did this on is waiting for your gracious help!

mkdir /etc/exim then rerun apt-get dist-upgrade... You won't have to re-download the 166M, BTW. Then I did apt-get dist-upgrade again and it complained of unmet dependencies and recommended apt-get -f install. I did that too, and then things proceeded okay. I think I have Woody now!

dist-upgrade from stable to testing: circular dependency
The debian-testing archive doesn't have any messages since April, so I presume this is the correct list. I changed sources.list from stable to testing, used dselect to do what is presumably the equivalent of apt-get update, then did apt-get dist-upgrade, which failed with an error message. perl: /lib/libc.so.6: version `GLIBC_2.2' not found (required by /lib/libdb.so.3) I went to the debian-user archives and found that I should go into /var/cache/apt/archives and do dpkg -i on the packages I needed. Here's where I ran into the circular dependency: dpkg: dependency problems prevent configuration of libc6: libc6 depends on libdb2 (= 2:2.7.7-4); however: Package libdb2 is not configured yet. Ok, so how about libdb2? dpkg: dependency problems prevent configuration of libdb2: libdb2 depends on libc6 (= 2.2.3-1); however: Package libc6 is not configured yet. What should I do next? Re: dist-upgrade from stable to testing: circular dependency
Try installing both packages at once from dpkg. If that won't work then you get to now learn the joys of forcing packages into your system. run dpkg --force-help I won't tell you which one to use because it's best if you read the help and then make an informed decision about forcing your depends (hint, hint). Of course you can totally rip your system to shreds doing this but I don't think you'll end up with a problem in this case. --mike On 09 Aug 2001 09:18:51 -0400, [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: The debian-testing archive doesn't have any messages since April, so I presume this is the correct list.
