xf86config is the name of the program which sets up the proper
configuration according to your hardware. This should have been run
automatically when you installed xbase and xserver-svga, which has the
VirGE support. Make sure that you have all the technical specs for your
monitor handy when you run this.

As well how can I integrate all X-programms and games on the X-screen?
There is currently just the desktop and a shell for input.

Which window manager are you using? The fvwm95 package sets up some
buttons which are useful and can be customized. More importantly, the
menu package should be installed. This provides menus for many of the
Debian window managers and many packages hook into it. Once you have
installed it, look in the /usr/doc/menu and find out how to further
customize your desktop as you like it. In the case of fvwm95, you can add
buttons and other things as the window manager starts up but you must be
careful not to edit the /etc/X11/fvwm95/system.fvwm295 file itself to make
the customizations since this file is rebuilt EVERY time the update-menus
program is run by you or a package just installed. Rather you must make
all of your customizations in the /etc/X11/fvwm95/system.fvwm2rc95-menu
file and then run update-menus yourself to build the system.fvwm2rc95
file. The next time you start fvwm95 the new changes will be visible.

Some programs do not hook into the menus so you can do it yourself. What
you need to do is to put the appropriate file in the /etc/menu directory.
The documentation is in the /usr/doc/menu directory.

Hope this helps,

Carlo

Make sure you install the xbase package as well, as it contains a
program xbase-config which will make your XF86Config file. (i think it is
called that - someone may need to correct me here)

There are two configuration programs:
 * xf86config, a text-based config program
 * XF86Setup, a graphical config program

Sometimes one will work when the other one didn't.

I still haven't figured out how to make custom menus yet. I do know that
it involves editing your .Xresources or .Xsession files, something like
 that anyways.

No, you edit your window manager rc file -- .fvwm2rc for instance.

Thanks for all your suggestion. I try...gg, okay, not so easy for a
beginner. I have installed the S3virge server but if I try to use it, I
always get error messages back after starting x. It just works with the
vga16 server. Let's see...

best wishes and thanks again

Copy /etc/X11/XF86Config to /etc/X11/XF86Config.old and then run
xbase-configure. It would be a good idea to have the XF86_VGA16 server
installed and the entry in /etc/X11/Xserver should declare it the server.
(You can change this back to the actual server after the configuration is
complete. The xbase-configure dialog box doesn't run with all servers. It
does run with the vga-16 server.

This is a minimal window manager (twm?) of which there are many choices. I
use olvwm but fvwm2 seems to be the most popular at the moment.

Sorry for these questions - I'm brandnew to Debian and Linux. I checked
some Faq's but didn't find the proper answers.

Don't be sorry ;-) this is the right place to ask. Welcome to Debian!

As well I got some problems while installing Netscape. It didn't worked
although I made the selection in dselect. I always got errormessages
until I unselceted Netscape. Is there a known bug?

The only thing that Debian can package is an installer. You will need to
download the tar.gz file from Netscape and place it in /tmp so the
installer can find it. (I believe I did this with lynx package, in the web
subdirectory)

If you press d when you have this highlighted in dselect you will see
that it tells you that Netscape does not allow redistribution of their
software. You will have to download the proper version and plave it in
/tmp before it will install correctly.

you need the following packages installed:
xbase, xlib6, xserver-vga16 (if you want graphical config interface), xserver
for your card (my guess is xserver-s3 or xserver-svga in your case). After
you've installed them, run XF86Setup (graphical configuration) or xf86config
(text-based configuaration).

As well how can I integrate all X-programms and games on the X-screen?

Looks like you are missing a window manager. Debian has a number of window
managers to choose from, including afterstep, fvwm2, fvwm95, twm and so on.
They are all located in section x11. YOu may also want to install menu
package which will put most of the programs you have installed on your window
manager's menu. You may also edit you window manager's rc file to create
custom menus, or you may use the menu package's custom menus, which will make
your custom menus available to all window managers.

No. Debian is not allowed to distribute netscape. The netscape package you
see is just an installer. YOu need to put netscape archive in /tmp for the
installer package to work.
