Re: packages in GNU but not in Debian

2004-07-17 Thread John Darrington
I have an unofficial package for gnubik (for which I'm the upstream
maintainer) at http://darrington.wattle.id.au/deb . It's a couple of
versions behind right now.

I'm not a Debian developer and don't have the time to commit to being
one. However if some kind soul wants to import gnubik into the debian fold,
I'll gladly co-operate with him/her in keeping the upstream debian friendly.

I'm impressed that as much as ~50% of the GNU package directory names coincide
with the debian package names!

Why should a given program be added to debian if it is not already unless
someone requests its addition?

As others have pointed out, many (most?) of those are in Debian already.
Furthermore, Debian is not a product of GNU, and is under no obligation to
package every GNU utility (although I can't think of any good reasons not
to).

That's a bit too simpleminded. Many/most of those _are_ in Debian,
but with slightly different names. (Like, well, glibc.) Others don't
apply. (Like djgpp.)

I'm not sure your list is very useful. Maybe you could go through
and trim out the ones in Debian under slightly different names?

Why don't you look for source package names?

gnuparted is parted
midnightcommander is mc
windowmaker is wmaker

You'll be able to find more examples. If you want a certain package, use e. g.
apt-cache search. If you can't find it, you can ask on this list.
