I don't really think so. The post itself actually makes sense.
Perhaps their provider is throwing away the responses (or hiding
them in the spam box, which nearly amounts to the same). Big mail
providers are like that these days.

When the OP doesn't think of double-checking (e.g. by looking into
the Web archives), they'll assume their mail hasn't made it. Resending
seems like a valid option.

But then... who knows. Perhaps it's a startup training their so-called
"AI". But then I might be. Or you.

My take: not troll. Bad mail provider.

You will need more data to make a useful bug report or get help from us
here. On the offending machine, open a terminal window, type:

sudo tail -f /var/log/syslog

and return. If you don't have/use sudo, then su to root, syslog needs
root permission to read.

Now plug in a USB stick. You should see many lines of text added. At
the moment, try the same procedure with the good computer, see if the
logs look approximately the same. You're looking for an 'sdX' appearing
as the stick is mounted, X depending on what other drives you have. If
this isn't happening, you won't see anything on the stick, as you
describe.

In that case, copy and paste the log lines from the problem machine and
post here. From a terminal window, copy by using ctrl-shift-C instead
of the usual GUI ctrl-C. Oh yes, you stop the tail command by using
ctrl-C first.

Components used in the machine may be listed.

I got lucky on a HP laptop with an Ice Lake processor
(https://linux-hardware.org/?probe=1686ba2df4). The device ELAN0712:00
(04F3:30FD Mouse) was not listed in the database, and the vendor is
Unknown
(https://linux-hardware.org/?device_vendor=Unknown+%2830FD%29_type=touchpad),
but it was supported by the kernel.

As a test, you might try a Fedora Live ISO. F37 currently provides the
6.1.18-200 kernel. Fedora is about as recent as you can get, short of
compiling your own kernel.

If you find sound works with Fedora 37, then you may need to look for
a distro that provides a 6.x kernel.

1)
I did check out https://linux-hardware.org/.
My old machine (now torn apart) was listed there.
My new machine does not seem to be listed there. Not surprising, since
manufactured in 2023-January.

2)
I did try a fresh install to the old machine of a Bookworm daily build
about a month ago. It almost all the way through the non-graphical,
expert-mode install, only to hard fail at refusing to install grub. More
than once.

Since I now have a working setup, I think I will just patiently wait a few
months until soon after the official release of Bookworm Stable, then
either upgrade or fresh install then.

If you are missing drivers or firmware then I recommend installing Debian
12 Bookworm. You can download the live installer from:
https://get.debian.org/images/weekly-live-builds/amd64/iso-hybrid/ Debian
11 is old and does not work with the latest hardware without installing
from debian backports which I do not recommend. Debian 12 is already frozen
for release testing. I have been running Debian 12 for over a year now and
only ran into one problem yesterday. I was having problems installing
mariadb-server. I made a work around hack today and got it to install.

The sound now works on this machine running Debian Stable (Bullseye).

The solution was to install was, as suggested, to do:
install Debian Stable Gnome (Ugh!) 10.0
upgrade to Debian Stable 11.6 (linux-image-5.10.0-21-amd64)
apt install -t bullseye-backports linux-image-amd64,
which installed linux-image-5.10.0-21-amd64.

Note:
upgrade to Debian Stable 11.6 (linux-image-5.10.0-21-amd64)
was not sufficient by itself.

Thanks to all for the help!

It would be interesting to see how that statement was actually
expressed. AIUI the two files are completely different in both
their contents and how they work.

/etc/modprobe.d/sound.conf (I think the wiki forgets that the filename
needs the .conf; the actual filename can be anything reasonable)
contains options for loading a /kernel module/, like the example:

  options snd_hda_intel index=1,0

I just added that exact line to my Lenovo laptop. Before I added it,
alsamixer would come up with the HDMI card and a row of S/PDIF
controls. The F6 menu would read:

   Sound Card
  - (default)
  0 HDA Intel HDMI
  1 HDA Intel PCH
enter device name...

After adding it and rebooting, alsamixer comes up with the
slider controls instead, and the F6 menu reads:

   Sound Card
  - (default)
  0 HDA Intel PCH
  1 HDA Intel HDMI
enter device name...

This behaviour is documented at:

  https://www.kernel.org/doc/html/v5.10/sound/index.html
  ↓

https://www.kernel.org/doc/html/v5.10/sound/alsa-configuration.html#module-parameters

Common parameters for top sound card modules

Each of top level sound card module takes the following options.

  index
  index (slot #) of sound card; Values: 0 through 31 or negative;
If nonnegative, assign that index number; if negative, interpret
as a bitmask of permissible indices; the first free permitted
  index is assigned; Default: -1

The files in /usr/share/alsa/ are AFAIK for user-space software. They
have a quite a complicated syntax, and I wouldn't say I'm comfortable
writing them: I just tend to cut and paste from examples.

You can probably achieve the same ends, with the correct incantation,
as with the modprobe option. You might even be able to get the two
methods to fight each other. (IOW it's important to clear out one
method before trying the other.)

I don't know what IVTVs are. Using the first (kernel) method, I would
write:

  options snd_hda_intel index=1,0,2,3

making 1 into the default.

Note: IIRC hyphens and underscores are interchangeable.
snd_hda_intel is a guess. Most modern sound is,
I believe, Intel DHA, but you never know. There's
a list of top-level card modules in the 2nd URL,
and of course its name must appear somewhere in
  your lsmod output.

Cheers,
David.

Thanks for the links. I worked through them, but as usual,
found it tough sledding. I did come across another page
that pointed out that alsa.conf has moved from /etc/modprobe.d/
to /usr/share/alsa/, for what it's worth.

This isn't the first time I've tackled this problem, and it's
really just a convenience thing, not a desperate need. When I
switch my TV from my cable box to the computer, I have to walk
over to the sound system to change its input selector from the
TV's audio output to the computer's analog jacks. (That input
selector is the one knob my universal remote can't touch.)

If I work on this problem for more than 100 times the time
it takes to walk across the room and back, I figure I've
reached the point of diminishing returns, and it's time
to set it aside for another day.

Thanks anyway, though. I've filed these notes for the next
time I have an hour or two to spare.

It's also not a Linux kernel and not relevant to your sound HW. Just
some video support for ancient video hardware. I don't think Cirrus
Logic has done video HW since the 90s.

Just need to give -t repo option to apt:

apt install -t bullseye-backports linux-image-amd64

Although, I don't think you can install a new kernel in a live system
with apt. Don't know for sure though. That's why I said it'd be easy to
add to an installed system.

I don't know if enabling persistence with the live system would allow
booting with a new kernel, it's been a while since I last played with
anything live. But that too needs some figuring out as I recall.

So, install on a USB thing or resize the Windows partition in your
laptop and install in the newly freed space.

I think the section "Wrong card used by default" in:

  https://wiki.debian.org/ALSA

should help. There's more detail at:

  https://alsa.opensrc.org/MultipleCards

and I think both these are pure ALSA and PA-free.

Setting default sound device (was Re: New Dell Inspiron 15 3000 Series 3511 sound problem on Debian 11 Stable)

2023-02-12 Thread Charlie Gibbs

This is going a bit off topic, but since there are probably
a number of sound gurus following the original thread, I
thought I'd throw out another sound question.

I have a desktop machine running Debian 11. It contains an
nVidia card which I've hooked to my TV via HDMI. Currently
sound is coming out the analog jacks on the computer; I'd like
to put the sound on the HDMI output so when switching the TV
from my cable box to the computer, I don't have to also switch
my sound system's input.

I know my hardware is capable of doing this; if I type

mpv --audio-device=alsa/hdmi:CARD=NVidia,DEV=0 foo.mp3

foo.mp3 will play through the HDMI audio output rather than
the default analog jacks. What I want to do is make the HDMI
audio output the default.

When I bring up alsamixer and hit F6, I get the following choices:
  0 HDA Intel
  1 HDA NVidia
  2 IVTV-0
  3 IVTV-1
There's no mention of which is the default or how to set a default.

Here's the output of the aplay -l command:

 List of PLAYBACK Hardware Devices
card 0: Intel [HDA Intel], device 0: STAC9271D Analog [STAC9271D Analog]
  Subdevices: 1/1
  Subdevice #0: subdevice #0
card 0: Intel [HDA Intel], device 1: STAC9271D Digital [STAC9271D Digital]
  Subdevices: 1/1
  Subdevice #0: subdevice #0
card 1: NVidia [HDA NVidia], device 3: HDMI 0 [HDMI 0]
  Subdevices: 1/1
  Subdevice #0: subdevice #0
card 1: NVidia [HDA NVidia], device 7: HDMI 1 [HDMI 1]
  Subdevices: 1/1
  Subdevice #0: subdevice #0

I've tried cobbling together bits and pieces I've found in
various places to create the following /etc/aplay.conf:

defaults.pcm.card 1
defaults.pcm.device 0
defaults.ctl.card 1
defaults.ctl.device 0

pcm.!default {
type hw
card 1
device 0
}

ctl.!default {
type hw
card 1
device 0
}

I've tried substituting both 3 and 7 on the "device" lines,
but nothing seems to have any effect.

I'm not sure what it takes to get ALSA to recognize a change in
its configuration, so I rebooted after each change just in case.

Although I've found many references to this topic on the web,
the answers are confusing, conflicting, or oriented toward
PulseAudio rather than ALSA. Can someone help clear the air?

I don't see why the solution to a sound problem should lie with an
xserver. Sound should work without X running at all. That's why
I wrote:

Once you've got those [alsamixer] settings, either quit with Escape,
or move to a different VC or window or xterm or whatever, and run

  $ speaker-test -D hw:0,0 -c 2

IOW you can perform the commands I gave after logging in at the
console, with no DMs, DEs, WMs or anything else.

But you may need a kernel more up-to-date than 5.10: there are
5.18 kernels in bullseye-backports, and these contain:

 * HD audio interface patch for Cirrus Logic CS8409 HDA bridge chip

Cheers,
David.

Thanks for the pointer to
https://www.phoronix.com/news/Cirrus-Dolphin-Linux-Audio.

According to https://packages.debian.org,

xserver-xorg-video-cirrus_1.5.3-1+b3_amd64.deb for Debian Stable (Bullseye)
does seem to be at

deb http://*ftp.de.debian.org/debian
* bullseye main

but that is not a backport.

When I look at https://packages.debian.org and search
"bullseye-updates" and "bullseye-backports"

I get this:

"You have searched for packages that names contain cirrus in suite(s)
bullseye-backports, all sections, and all architectures.

Sorry, your search gave no results".

Searching "bookworm" (testing) does show:

xserver-xorg-video-cirrus_1.5.3-1+b5_amd64.deb

but I don't know if I can use that with my Debian 11.6 "live" usb stick.

I hate to sound stupid, but could someone please tell me how to add that to
the
Debian 11.6 "live" usb stick?

I know how to enable the bullseye backports repository in
/etc/apt/sources.list, but then I dont know how to "get to" and use
backports; I've never had to do that before.

So it looks like this is the actual sound hardware that's in use, not
the Tiger Lake stuff. A quick search found
https://www.phoronix.com/news/Cirrus-Dolphin-Linux-Audio which says
shows support was added in Linux kernel 5.15.

Not available for Debian 11 except as a backport, which is easily added
to an existing installation, even on USB media. There doesn't seem to be
live images for the upcoming Debian 12 currently.

This is the device you want to concentrate on if you've got speakers.

These devices, and the rest, might be useful if you have an HDMI
output that you can connect to, say, a TV.

It's a bit difficult to follow this narrative. Useful is to list the
options when you press F6. I don't know anything about pulseaudio except
that it can both a help and a hindrance. Sorry.

> Using F6 to choose "0 HDA Intel PCH", which shows card as "HDA Intel PCH"

That choice should correspond to:

  > card 0: PCH [HDA Intel PCH], device 0: Generic Analog [Generic Analog]
  > Subdevices: 1/1
  > Subdevice #0: subdevice #0

above. You want the F3 controls for Playback. Ignore the S/PDIF
controls as that's all digital stuff. You should have Slider controls
for Master, Headphone, Speaker, Mic, possibly PCM, and perhaps more.
Make sure Master and Speaker are turned up and have OO, not MM, at the
bottom. (PCM doesn't matter, and don't worry if there's no Speaker.)

Once you've got those settings, either quit with Escape, or move to a
different VC or window or xterm or whatever, and run (from alsa-utils):

$ speaker-test -D hw:0,0 -c 2

The first zero is the card, and the second is the device. I assume
you've got stereo. (Many things won't work with mono, funnily enough.)
You should get hissing noises from Left and Right speakers alternately.

As I said, it's not easy to follow what you wrote above. If you can't
get a display in alsamixer that has sliders for Master etc, and has
Generic at the top (IOW if everything I've written seems the wrong way
round), then I personally would uninstall pulse* and pavu*, and get
things working with just ALSA. Pulseaudio can play some clever tricks
once you've got things working, but it adds another layer of complexity.
If it adds ten extra fancy controls, then you've got ten extra ways of
losing the audio output.

Cheers,
David.

I may be wrong, but this line may be a sign of kernel crash causing

The kernel is happy with the sound card.

ALSA believe that there are two audio systems: a motherboard
audio jack and a video-card HDMI that can play audio that way.

Here's a laptop that I have:

 List of PLAYBACK Hardware Devices
card 0: PCH [HDA Intel PCH], device 0: VT1802 Analog [VT1802
Analog]
  Subdevices: 1/1

  Subdevice #0: subdevice #0
card 1: AUDIO [SMSL USB AUDIO], device 0: USB Audio [USB Audio]
  Subdevices: 1/1
  Subdevice #0: subdevice #0

You can see that it has a first set of jacks, an alternate set,
an HDMI output, and a USB-attached sound card (DAC).

Capture is for the recording side. That's normal.

Those are almost certainly on/off controls for the various HDMI
outputs. Do you really have 10 physical HDMI or DisplayPort outputs?

I would say your problems are related to PulseAudio and mixer
controls. Most likely PulseAudio is trying to send sound via one of the
HDMI outputs, or it's otherwise confused about where to send audio.

Not sure if that is any help. I don't know how to interpret that; maybe
someone else can see
something informative there.

BTW, the sound DOES work fine using an Ubuntu 22.4.1 (LTS) "live" install
disk, in "live" mode.
I *could* run the same two commands previously mentioned, while running the
Ubuntu 22.4.1 (LTS) "live" install disk, perhaps to compare the output from
the Debian 11.6 "live" session.

I did try using alsamixer, but using F6 to choose "default", which shows
both card and chip as "PulseAudio" and then F5 to "show all controls", did
nothing. Both the Master and Capture controls were set to 100. Below the
Master scale, it showed "OO" (not muted). Below the Capture scale, it did
not have a similar "block" to show either "OO" or "MM" (muted).

Using F6 to choose "0 HDA Intel PCH", which shows card as "HDA Intel PCH"
and chip as "Cirrus Logic Generic", then F5 to "show all controls", also
did nothing. The "PCM" control was set to 100. The "PCM" control scale did
not have a "block" to show either "OO" or "MM" (muted). Also visible were
entries for "S/PDIF, then "S/PDIF 1", "S/PDIF 2" and so on through "S/PDIF
10" , all of which had a "block" showing "OO", but no "scale". And, when
selected with F6, the "HDA Intel PCH" choice showed, after hitting F5, the
message "This sound device does not have any capture controls."

I then (again) installed pavucontrol 4.0-2 by:
"sudo apt install pavucontrol".

OK, next step is to run

sudo dmesg | grep -i audio

in a terminal to see if there's any problem loading the driver or
firmware and what other messages there might be. And run aplay -l, does
that list any sound device?

Dito. Refurbished Thinkpad X230 here (I prefer small ones: backpack and
that). Souped up to 16G RAM, still on spinning rust (back then, 1T
SSD was prohibitive). Bought end of 2018 (as a replacement of another
X230 which was crushed by a fire protection door: they aren't indestructible,
after all). Looking forward to its next upgrade (SSD).

Paid 400 EUR (incl. RAM), which in the US would be $400. You'll get more
computing for that these days.

New is only worth it if you specifically want some feature you won't
get otherwise.

Hello to all!

Hello.

Full disclosure: I know very little about audio troubleshooting.

I just got a brand new Dell Inspiron 15 3000 Series 3511 laptop. Came with
Windows (ugh!) preinstalled.
My old Dell Inspiron 15 3000 Series 3542 laptop (made in 2014) just died.
So this one should work, right?

No.

Unfortunately the new 3511 is quite different from the old 3542. It mostly
"sort of" works.
But the sound will not work at all on Debian.

How did you come to this conclusion?

Did you do something, take some action, expecting the result to be
audible, but obtained silence instead?

If so, what was that something?

What volume controls have you examined? Have you checked whether they
are muted?

Personally, one of the first things I usually do to get sound to work
(when I notice my media player makes no sound/youtube videos are
silent/etc) is run alsamixer (in package alsa-utils) and unmute all
the playback volume controls.

But I've never used your DE. And again, I'm no expert.

Not wanting to immediately remove Windows and thus make it
unreturnable, I have been trying to run it using a Debian 11 "Live"
install USB thumb drive (Cinnamon desktop). No sound at all.

Throughout this thread, you report the result of "No sound", but never
do you specify what you are doing that results in unexpected silence.

But . . . it DOES work when running the computer from a USB thumb
drive of the most recent version of SystemRescue! So, it CAN work
(somehow) on (some) Linux setups.

Note: System Rescue is now based upon Arch Linux.

Using the Debian 11 USB thumb drive, I was not able to do a complete
update and upgrade - not enough room on the USB thumb drive. I was
able to install the pavucontrol package, which I recall has
sometimes helped in the past. But still no sound.

Still no indication of how you have arrived at this conclusion!

[snipped hardware info]

I poked around in the Debian wiki about fixing sound problems, but
to be honest, much of it is over my head.

Me too.

So . . . any advice on how to get sound to work on this computer?

No matter the problem you want help troubleshooting, make sure your
report prominently specifies not only the unexpected behavior, but
also WHAT YOU DID that resulted in that unexpected behavior.

That will help people help you.

Good luck to you.

I recommend against the latest and greatest. Recent computers may use
hardware that Linux does not yet support. Unless you want to take up
supporting such hardware, of course. And Linux should be very usable on
almost any computer less than seven to ten years old.

You might look at others' experiences with hardware that interests you.

I did try Debian 11.6 "live" . Again, No sound.

BTW,

I have not yet tried Bookworm, as I do not know where to find a "Live"

Perhaps I could use the Bookworm weekly build to install to an external usb

installing to the internal ssd.

Is that feasible?

And of course recommendations for a current laptop (preferably reasonably

This isn't new sound hardware so should work in Debian 11.

With a quick look, you probably need the non-free package
firmware-sof-signed but that isn't included in the Debian 11 live. You
could try an image which contains those things from

New Dell Inspiron 15 3000 Series 3511 sound problem on Debian 11 Stable

2023-02-09 Thread Default User
Hello to all!

Not wanting to immediately remove Windows and thus make it unreturnable, I
have been trying to run it using a
Debian 11 "Live" install USB thumb drive (Cinnamon desktop). No sound at
all.

But . . . it DOES work when running the computer from a USB thumb drive of
the most recent version of
SystemRescue! So, it CAN work (somehow) on (some) Linux setups.

Note: System Rescue is now based upon Arch Linux.

Using the Debian 11 USB thumb drive, I was not able to do a complete update
and upgrade - not enough room on the
USB thumb drive. I was able to install the pavucontrol package, which I
recall has sometimes helped in the past.
But still no sound.

The dumbed-down make-believe BIOS on the new computer lists the Audio
Controller as:
"Cirrus Logic CS8409".

SystemRescue reports under PCI devices:
Intel Tiger Lake-LP Smart Sound Technology Audio Controller.
"Driver in Use: snd_hda_intel Kernel modules: snd_hda_intel,
snd_sof_pci_intel_tgl".

In Debian 11 "Live", lspci -nn reports:
"00:1f.3 Audio device [0403]: Intel Tiger Lake-LP Smart Sound Technology
Audio Controller [8086:a0c8] (rev 20)".

I poked around in the Debian wiki about fixing sound problems, but to be
honest, much of it is over my head.

So . . . any advice on how to get sound to work on this computer?
Or, failing that, any suggestions for a good (preferable affordable) laptop
that plays nice with Debian?

I guess I could try to use Arch or some other Linux distribution, but I
have used Debian for many years, and would
really hate changing to something else.

Two things:

I'd suggest that you try using the unofficial .iso that includes the firmware.
https://cdimage.debian.org/cdimage/unofficial/non-free/cd-including-firmware/11.5.0-live+nonfree/amd64/iso-hybrid/
 - and pick your desktop from under there.

Andrew, Thomas, and David:
Thank you for the suggestions.
The suggestions at https://docs.kernel.org/admin-guide/thunderbolt.html did not
help, unfortunately.
I also got the same result with live-nonfree. I am however able to get Linux
Mint to run live (tho I didn't install it because I want Debian), so I think it
is a Debian issue. I tried Debian testing as well - also a no-go. I also tried
installing (rather than running live) Debian stable and testing and with and
without non-free, to no avail: during installation I get these error messages:

"No kernel modules were found. This probably is due to a mismatch between the
kernel used by this version of the installer and the kernel version available
in the archive. You should make sure that your installation image is
up-to-date, or - if that's the case, try a different mirror, preferably
deb.debian.org"

and later:

"Software RAID not available. The current kernel doesn't seem to support
software RAID (MD) devices. This should be solved by loading the necessary
modules"
as well as:
"The current kernel doesn't support the Logical Volume Manager. You may need to
load the lvm-mod module."

Based on all that, sounds like lack of current hardware support in Debian for
this machine because it is so new? I have the output of lshw, if that would
help.
Thanks,
L

SOLUTION: IN THE END, THE INSTALLATION WORKED OUT AFTER THE FOLLOWING:
in the BIOS/UEFI, under Storage, change the selection from "ACH/NVMe" to "RAID
on"

I take your point, but when things get tough, it's worth trying the
latest Knoppix CD download.

Knoppix cannot normally be cleanly updated, so it is of no use as a
working distribution, but it specialises in detecting and running
recent hardware.

If it does run OK (it certainly ought to if Mint does), then we can go
through the process of finding out what it is using that the standard
Debian installation does not provide. It is based on Debian, mainly
sid, so anything it can do, Debian can usually also do once we know
what is required.

If later drivers are needed that require a later infrastructure or
kernel than stable provides, we may be out of luck. I've tried
installing testing from scratch recently, claws-mail is missing
completely, and there are library problems.

We don't know whether the copy was a problem. The `sync' is important,
though, and it is very important to wait until it finishes. Otherwise
the data may be in RAM, still waiting to be pushed out to the stick.

The `bs=8M' may or may not make the copy faster (in my experience,
it does, but not by a spectacular amount; my very incomplete tests
show a very flat maximum roughly in the abouts of 1M).

You can also ditch the sync and let dd do it. I recommend

  dd if= of=/dev/sdb bs=1M oflag=sync status=progress

(the `status=progress' gives you some feedback on how far the copy
is, the `oflag=sync' makes that the write is synchronized, so you
don't have to wait for the sync at the end).

I agree with Thomas, just ignore it for the time being.

Perhaps look at

  https://docs.kernel.org/admin-guide/thunderbolt.html

and see whether you can authorise whatever thunderbolt is.

Looks like a problem with the egg-laying woolmilkpig, which substitutes
for a USB interface.

I would assume that this is the reason why the (initramfs) prompt appears.
Assuming you boot in EFI native mode, it looks like GRUB was able to use
the USB interface for loading the Linux kernel and the initrd, but that
the kernel is not able to operate the Thunderbolt interface.

What happens if you boot a most modern Debian installation ISO ?

https://cdimage.debian.org/cdimage/weekly-builds/amd64/iso-cd/debian-testing-amd64-netinst.iso

Does it get to the first installation question ?
(IIRC it will ask for language and location. That would be the moment
 to bail out.)

Have a nice day :)

Exactly how did you copy the image onto the USB stick - what command did
you use and did you wait until it had copied fully?

Andy, I did wait till it was done indeed. I copied the image to the USB with:
dd if=/home/luben/Downloads/debian-live-11.5.0-amd64-gnome.iso of=/dev/sdb
bs=8M; sync
I tried it without the:

bs=8M; sync
as well.

problem getting debian live to run

2022-12-01 Thread L Dimov
I am trying to run debian stable (11.5) live on a new Dell XPS laptop from a
USB drive. After the Debian logo displays for a bout a minute, I get this text:

DPC: RP PIO log size 0 is invalid
thunderbolt 0-0: reading DROM failed
BusyBox v1.30.1 (Debian 1:1.30.1-6+b3) built-in shell (ash)
Enter 'help' for list of built-in commans.
(initramsfs) _

I tried it multiple times, including first formatting the USB as a FAT32. None
of that helped.

Any help in getting this party started will be greatly appreciated!
Thanks!

when you know the answer it is easy to judge. I am not suppose to know how
debian mirrors resolve and OP did not put enough information.

I completely agree with you, but I do not understand what I was suppose to

You will have deb.debian.org in there which is debian.map.fastlydns.net.

Maybe your VM is using IPv6 and your IPv6 connectivity downstream is
broken.

Or something else related to the networking for you VM is not working
correctly, hard to diagnose without further information.

What DO you have in that file? It's usually not recommended to put a
mirror name directly into that file, specifically for this reason;
individual mirrors sometimes are unavailable.

Instead, it's more common to use a country-wide name such as
ftp.xx.debian.org (where xx is a country code). These hosts don't really
exist, but are a series of redirects pointing to local hosting
providers. Sometimes the list is out of date, and the redirect might
take you to a host which is unavailable.

You can either wait a bit and try again, and you might get redirected to
a different host, or you can use the "new" system at https://deb.debian.org

Actually it is not an issue but a feature. Qt Creator is stopping the
execution when it receives a signal from gdb, in this case SIGSTOP.
Add a breakpoint inside the thread code and press F5 to start
debugging. If you accept the message and press F10 (step) some times
you will be able to reach the code.

You can tell Qt Creator to ignore the signal. Check
https://forum.qt.io/topic/100958/catching-unix-interrupt-signal-on-console-application-when-debugging-with-qtcreator/2

I've added

  handle SIGSTOP pass nostop noprint

And it just worked :-)

In fact I can reproduce your issue and at the same time I can make it
work under gdb itself, so the issue seems to be in Qt Creator. I've
reproduced the issue with Qt Creator from unstable, so let me suggest
you to file a bug upstream: http://https://bugreports.qt.io Do not
forget to upload this test code, it's very straightforward and so a
nice example for an upstream issue.

problem with debian Buster and debugging thread in Qt5

2021-03-30 Thread Vincent charente
Dear All,

I am sending you this email because I encounter a problem with Debian
Buster and default Qt5 package.

I installed packages below :

·debian 10.8 x86_64 (amd64)

·apt-get install build-essentials

·apt-get install gdb

·apt-get install qt5-default

·apt-get install qtcreator

I have tried to debug an application which contains a thread with GBD but
GDB stops when thread starts. I tried to build GDB with last sources but
the problem still remains.

*This problem doesn’t exist with Debian 9 *with the same procedure of
installation.

You can find a simple example which increments a counter in a thread every
500ms at the URL below https://pastebin.com/WegsL9vd.

Do you know if there is a way to solve this problem ?

Best regards

Hello

not an expert border less ness

could you ask someone to install latest Debian + Mate Desktop + orca?

or alternative: have someone prepare a linux boot stick with Debian 10
live iso mate image

https://cdimage.debian.org/debian-cd/current-live/amd64/iso-hybrid/debian-live-10.4.0-amd64-mate.iso

(should run out of the box without setup on most systems but bios
settings might need to be modified in order to boot it, try f12 during boot)

imho orca is a gui application can only be used after a desktop was
installed

do you have a desktop gui installed?

mate is pretty simple and orca comes pre installed

when mate is running open a terminal (as non root user)

orca -s

will open up orca setup dialog with all kinds of settings

restart firefox

and it will start reading webpages

Best way to find out is to check if anyone has filed a bugreport.

Hi list,

iwlwifi has a problem with the latest Debian unstable kernel package
(5.4.0-4-amd64).
The wifi interface is not usable.

5.4.0-3-amd64 works fine instead.

Is anyone experiencing the same problem?

Psensor Problem in Debian Buster

2019-08-05 Thread Stephen P. Molnar

I have upgraded from Stretch to Buster.

Psensor fails to autoscale the CPU temperature in Buster when I am
logged in a user, although it did autoscale the temperature in
Stretch. Buster shows the CPU temperature as 41 degrees Celsius as a
user, but autoscales running as root.

Insights to a solution to this problem would be most welcome.

Thanks in advance.

I don't use debian as a guest OS on virtualbox, but I know that there
are various prebuilt debian images[1] for that platform. You might have
better luck with one of those.

I do, as a way of testing my 'odd' ideas at times.

The process generally just works. Most common problem is that sometimes
vbox tries to boot the .iso again, so try removing that and floppy from
the boot options.

Are you using vbox 6.04? A couple of us found minor issues with one of
the recent minor updates which have now disappeared.

I'm not very patient when trying to fix something as new as a fresh

Problem loading Debian 9.8.0

Hi Suppot,

I installed Debian 9.8.0 on my laptop using an iso DVD image and Virtualbox
6.0.4

https://cdimage.debian.org/debian-cd/current/amd64/iso-dvd/

I create a virtual drive of 50GB and loaded the ISO from a local folder on

The installation went fine but when it went to boot the Virtual box
software but the Debian OS didn't load.

A black box opened up with a flashing cursor in the Top LHS. It looks as
if its waiting for more files to be loaded before but it just sits there
doing nothing.

I have uninstalled it and reinstalled it again with no success. I also
have tried installing an earlier version of debian but get the same
result. I have checked every thing and it seems to be okay. Virtual box
seems to be working okay and the top tab says Debian [Running]

Is it my laptop. I am using a Panasonic Toughbook with windows 10 build
1803. . it has a standard hard drive with 1TB space. 16GB RAM. I already
made one change to the bios enabling AMD-V. Do I need to make any more. I
can send more info on the laptop if required.

Any suggestions would be welcome.

Man, I was sitting here thinking *2 TERABYTES*?! Am I reading that
output wrong?! I'd LOVE for an older camera to take more than 1 or 2
GIGABYTES, let alone 2TB! :))

K/t abject poverty, I play around A LOT with older digital cameras
rather than cutting edge. One alternate trick that *sometimes* works
is that many (dare I say at least most?) of them use cables to
communicate with computers.

*SOMETIMES*, although not always 100% of the time, the communication
that goes on via that cable is what will get what you need even when
memory card readers don't register any given class/type of memory
stick that digital cameras might use.

As I write that, it occurs to me that some of that higher success
gained by going that route is because your "card reader" is then the
same instrument that wrote data to that card in the first place. Of
all the technology available right now, theoretically one would think
that the #1 go-to thing that should *always* be able to read that
card's data is that same instrument that put that data on that card.
One would think :)

But that's something one wouldn't know for sure until the camera is
physically in hand, unfortunately. A couple of us here on Debian-User
had problems going that cable route to transfer images around. Those
issues seem to have settled out, though, over the last year or so.

One hard lesson I learned on the fly was that everything on a camera
can *look* fabulous can put out all the cool digital readings you
want, can preview nice, sharp pics through the viewfinder or on the
LCD screen, etc..

BUT the internal memory card reader/writer and possibly attached
dedicated processor board inside the camera can be shot, fried,
useless. In that kind of case, it can cost as much in service fees and
parts to replace as it would for a newer, much more capable camera.

Nikon D1H is my experience there.. Total brick, but it sure is pretty
to look at and make pretends with. Everyone was sleeping the day I was
able to afford that one.. :)

In the case of a fried internal memory card slot, there would...
obviously... be a bit of card reading issues in that case, too. That
was (mostly) the intended point of bringing that part up.

You can find yourself running into a brick wall for hours trying
everything you can think of for why your memory stick keeps throwing
basic errors, e.g. card not present or card not formatted. Meanwhile
the problem could ultimately be traced to a broken dedicated processor
board or similar for that memory card slot. Nothin' is going to read
nothin' for nothin' in Debian until that gets fixed first. :)

FWIW, if you use a USB-connected card reader, then the physical media
doesn't actually matter: it's the card reader which handles the details
of the "Memory Stick" access and your computer will only see a standard
USB-connected disk.

Of course compatibility with GNU/Linux can still be relevant in terms of
the file-system used on those things. I have an old Sony camera using
Memory Stick Pro and the file system used on it is FAT, so I have
absolutely no trouble reading it on my Debian boxes with a USB-connected
card reader. But in your case, the "Input/output error" indicates the
problem comes before your computer has a chance to look at the
file-system.

Maybe the card you tried to use, or the card reader was faulty (in my
experience, both have fairly high failure rates).

I believe there is something wrong with your hardware. I do not believe
there are any sdc much less memory stick that contains 2 tB. The largest
I heard is 256 gB and memory stick is old technology.

In addition be careful of the switch. In sdc cards, the switch does not
truly make the card read only, instead it is a bit to indicate the
switch is on or off. It is up to the software to ensure that you do not
write to it. Of course this may have changed

Ati Radeon HD 7850 Problem on Debian 7 Stable

2014-11-17 Thread João Luís Correia de Medeiros
Dear sir or madam,

I have an Ati Radeon 7850, and have tried using in Debian Stable.

However, I am constantly greeted by X.org issues (in this case, it being unable
to start, I'm guessing because of the kernel mod not being properly installed
because I'm using an outdated kernel?)

So, in sum, I'm asking what way you recommend me installing or adding support
for this card, as I'm unable to.

I've tried various sources and blogs explaining how to do it, but more often
than not, I end up with a corrupted installation following their suggestions /
explanations.

Same thing goes for my wireless card (I was unfortunate enough to get a realtek
chip, it's an RTL8192 ), I install firmware-realtek from Debian ( And
firmware-Linux-nonfree ) hoping it's all I need to get it up and running, but
doing so, makes my ETH0 not respond to DHCP at all (I'm guessing it also needs
a firmware blob to work, and is somehow being given the wrong one? )

Any help is appreciated!

Thank you

not the greatest, but they don't interfere with eth0.

with the caveat that i don't currently run squeeze myself, it would
surprise me if vlc were not installable on squeeze, and (with due
respect to third-party repository enthusiasts) i doubt that third
party repositories are required to install it.

again, regarding your sources.list, i wonder what is the output of

---

This description comes from the properties option in synaptic:

Debian multimedia packages maintainers
pkg-multimedia-maintain...@lists.alioth.debian.org

But when I just checked from the source option it says it was installed from:

oldstable/main (http.debian.net)

It has the official Debian logo on the vlc entries so it must be still be in
oldstable now. IIRC it was about this time that multimedia was no longer being
maintained and supported by Debian and moved over to a third party repo.
Section 2.5 on the page you posted above has a thorough explanation starting
with this:

2.5. There is 'Debian Multimedia Maintainers' and 'deb-multimedia.org'. So
what's the difference?

'Debian Multimedia Maintainers' is the team behind the packaging of multimedia
related packages distributed with Debian. In other words, 'Debian Multimedia
Maintainers' is us.

'deb-multimedia.org' (aka 'dmo' or 'd-m.o', formerly 'debian-multimedia.org')
is a site that offers a repository of multimedia packages as well. That site is
maintained by an individual that is not part of this team.

If you continue reading down that page the transitions and differences are
clearly described.

As an alternative, you might try the version in the Mepis community repo for
squeeze. The media packages that Steve Pusser builds have always been
compatible with my system. He's a real wizard!

Problem with Debian 6 LTS and vlc

which makes that list appear to me (along with the messages that I
have so far seen posted to it), to be for developers, rather than for
Debian 6 LTS users who are seeking support.

IHello.

Thank you to those who replied with assistance.

However, I now believe that I got the source of the problem wrong, and
I believe that the problem is kind of solved.

I had downloaded, after the above, the ISO images for the 7.6.0 live
LXDE amd 64 and i386 systems, and, copied them to a USB drive (after
ruining about half a dozen blank DVD's, but not with these two
particular ISO files), and, used that in a laptop, and wrote to blank
DVD's in the laptop, without any problem., I have then used the i386
one, to boot on my celeron laptop, an HP/Compaq NX5000, to test the
writing of the ISO file to the DVD, and, it kind of booted okay (the
only way that it would boot, was with the 486 option, and, not with
the 686 option, and I believe the Celeron to be a 686 based Celeron,
but, I may be wrong).

So, in short, the problem appears to have been that the DVD drive in
my desktop workstation has suddenly failed (I have not encountered a
CD or DVD drive, failing, before this, that I remember - maybe floppy
drives, and Hard Disk Drives, but, not cd or DVD drives).

What alerted me to the possibility, was when I tried to play a video
DVD borrowed from our local public library, in my desktop
workstation, and it would not play it.

The problem is, as said, kind of solved, as have not replaced the
optical disk drive in the computer, and, probably will not, as the
design of the computer, is lousy for modifying the computer, unlike
the IBM PS/2 architecture, that was a pleasure to work with (slide
components out, slide in their replacements, all easily accessible);
this one seems to need an electronics engineer, to do anything with
its components.

I have not inserted SOLVED into the subject line of this message,
as, in gmail, and, I assume, other similarly thread-based mail
viewers, such an addition of a word in the subject field, is regarded
as a different thread, and, leaving the subject field as it is,
appends this message to the thread to which it relates.

Re: Problem with Debian 7.5 i386 lxde LIVE ISO and Brasero

2014-07-12 Thread Thomas Schmitt
Hi,

Bret Busby's Brasero:
 SCSI error on write(14096,16): [5 21 02] Invalid address

This is a problem between libburn and drive.
libburn is supposed to write a sequence of consequtive block
addresses in steps of 16. The drive perceives block address 14096
as out of sequence.

Since libburn and drives usually do not have this problem, we
are facing an individual defect here. Having the choice between
an individually bad libburn and an individually bad drive, i
now point to the drive. It seems ill.

I am the developer of libburn. If you suspect that libburn is the
culprit, then we can examine the data traffic between software
and drive, by help of my command line program xorriso.
In this case send me the file /tmp/xorriso.log which gets produced
by this very verbous program run:

  xorriso -as cdrecord \
 dev=/dev/sr0 -V -v debian-live-7.5.0-i386-lxde-desktop.iso \
 21 | tee -i /tmp/xorriso.log

(I assume your drive has address /dev/sr0. If you have more than
one drive, it could be sr1, sr2, ...)

Have a nice day :)

Thomas

Check the MD5Sum.

To eliminate brasero from the equation, I would see what wodim thinks.

e.g.

wodim -v -dummy speed=4 /path/to/file.iso

-dummy will ensure the laser is turned off so that you don't create
another coaster.

You *may* need to pass the device if wodim doesn't detect it, with
'dev=/dev/sdx' or 'dev=/dev/srx' (replace x with right value.)

If there are no errors, (the -v means verbose) then remove the '-dummy'
option to see if it burns properly.

I would first check the MD5Sum, though.

Sorry Jerry. We do our best to incorporate all levels of users here. On
that note, this should get you going:

I don't need your silly links to know how to use mail lists. I started
with email around 40 years ago, when it was Arpanet. I also have been
using Linux for a number of years.

But one thing hasn't changed in all that time. People who refuse to
follow netiquette, especially in respect to copying relevant information
in their replies, are either stubborn or stoopid. Which are you?

Obviously you must be the latter, since you aren't addressing the
problem YOU are causing.
