Thank you *very* much, Thomas. I will add as soon as possible this flag
  to
the configure and will release another version.

Thomas, I see the same behaviour with or without --disable-imake
--disable-narrowproto. The toolbar seems to appear and dissapear in its whole
 erratically. Any other idea?

not at the moment. I'll take a look later today (my development machine
is on Debian/testing, so the Xaw library should be the same). Perhaps it's
as simple as --disable-imake --enable-narrowproto (about time to enumerate
the possibilities in the faq).

Bug#345409: New upgrade breaks login as there is no multikey anymore

2006-01-08 Thread Bernhard R. Link

So please, if you break the default behavior of X to use shift-ralt as
multikey then just allow the sysadmin to fix this bug by config!!!

This setting was insane, Shift+AltGr was different from AltGr+Shift which
is very confusing, so it is good to see that upstream dropped it.
Of course we could put ralt_switch_multikey back in Debian, but if your
keyboard has some spare keys, adding a compose: option would be much
 better.

Spare keys are much better, but there are none on old keyboards.

I also do not think it is very confusing, as it simple is the AltGr key
with the shift key as modifier. E+shift is something different to
shift+E, too.
And as AltGr+Shift+anything is not bound to any meaning at all, there
is nothing it could be confused too.

Breaking the Shift-AltGr key as multikey is a major hassle, as
suprisingly many people rely on it. I do not think it is sensible to
make something an option instead of the default that many people rely
on (so this is already a FAQ), while people not wanting it are unlikely
to even notice it is activated.

Bug#346500: xorg-x11: Hurd updates

2006-01-08 Thread Michael Banck
Package: xorg-x11
Version: 6.9.0.dfsg.1-2
Severity: important
Tags: patch

Hi,

this is the second set of Hurd updates, prepared by Samuel Thibault
[EMAIL PROTECTED]:

- #800: Small update to sync it a bit more with the Linux archs
- #809: Fix keyboard driver (upstream #5537)
- #810: Fix build failure in xdm in non-Linux codepath
- #811: Update for a gnumach security patch
- MANIFEST update

This should make xorg work on the Hurd, Samuel has tested it. We have
not built the package completely from start to end yet, though.

All credit goes to Samuel for this.

The attached patch is relative to trunk/debian in SVN.

cheers,

Michael

Bug#345914: xserver-xorg: Freeze on 82855PM, too

2006-01-08 Thread Andre Timmermann
Package: xserver-xorg
Version: 6.9.0.dfsg.1-1
Followup-For: Bug #345914

I'm using a IBM Thinkpad R50p and X freezes after the upgrade. It was
not possible for me to track down this error, KDE starts normal and
after some time the whole system hangs. I just had to start an
application (mozilla or evolution) and it took 2 seconds to 2 minutes to
freeze the system.

There were no entries in the logfiles.

Bug#332548: xserver-xorg: 6.8.99.900 breaks radeon dual-head

Hallo Holger,

remarks: previously used the Screen 1 RightOf Screen 0 setup

   fullscreen programms (i.e. ppracer) are

I think part of the bug is getting two outputs to work with separate
screens. In other words, your laptop panel/CRT1 become associated with
the :0.0 display and the second output with :0.1.

If I understand correctly, MergedXinerama gives you a single screen.
I.e. not what ATI calls Dual-Head proper.

installing xlibs from unstable, so the included logs are probably
wrong.

I don't know if it's the right package to report this bug on. I'm
running X experimental. Since I have installed gnome 2.12 some letters
don't work anymore on the keyboard (the e-acute gives an accolade).
The gnome-keyboard-properties fails when trying to re-select the french
layout with:

** (gnome-keyboard-properties:15969): CRITICAL **: XkbGetKeyboard failed to get
keyboard from the server!

and then segfaults:

Bug#332548: Probably same as #332548

2006-01-08 Thread Frank Lichtenheld
#332548, #345509, and #345839 should probably merged.
Since I don't pretend to understand anything about X servers I hesitate
to do it myself though ;)

Oh, me too BTW... but as so many people before have sent in their
logs and confs I guess mine wont make any difference.

Bug#345914: xserver-xorg: Freeze on 82855PM, too

2006-01-08 Thread Elimar Riesebieter
On Sun, 08 Jan 2006 the mental interface of
Andre Timmermann told:

Package: xserver-xorg
Version: 6.9.0.dfsg.1-2
Followup-For: Bug #345914

Starting X freezes my PowerBook5,6 (radeon) completely. No net, no
console. So I had to hard reset the machine. I tried the following:

Recreating a xorg.conf by dpkg-reconfigure - no success

Switching from ati(radeon) driver to fbdev - no success, but no
freeze.

Switching from 24 to 16 DefaultDepth + fbdev - no success, X shows
the wm splashscreen with an cross cursor similar to the twm one but
shuts down after a while. This might be considerable with a broken
libpango at ppc, I am not sure yet.

Installing libgl1-mesa-dri in the hope r300 is used with radeon
driver - frozen machine.

Bug#346553: xserver-xorg: Thinkpad middle button paste no longer working

2006-01-08 Thread Chris Dos
Package: xserver-xorg
Version: 6.9.0.dfsg.1-1
Severity: normal
Tags: experimental

I was running the xorg-server from experimental that was version
6.8.99.900 that had the patch for middle button scroll and paste
functionality for the Thinkpad. However, my recent apt-get upgrade for
Sid installed version 6.9.0. Which doesn't seem to have the
scroll/paste patch (or at least it no longer works since the upgrade).

Did the experimental package not trickle down into unstable with the
patch intact?

This is the patch in question:

Bug#346554: xserver-xorg: X server doesn't generate VisibilityNotify event

2006-01-08 Thread Sebastian Schmidt
Package: xserver-xorg
Version: 6.9.0.dfsg.1-2
Severity: normal

-BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE-
Hash: SHA1

Moin,

when I change virtual desktops with fluxbox (0.9.14-1), the X server[1]
does not generate a VisibilityNotify with state VisibilityPartiallyObscured.
This causes, e.g., xawtv to not switch off overlay, which then draws the
movie into some other window.

VisibilityUnobscured gets sent, as xev tells me:
VisibilityNotify event, serial 30, synthetic NO, window 0x181,
state VisibilityUnobscured

Bye,
   Sebastian

 doubt this affected anything).

It seems that the X - Xorg symlink was removed many months ago...what's
the thinking there? Is it to encourage people to use Xorg directly?

No... this should not have happened. It's something I must have overlooked
when changing the xserver-xorg-dbg package to its current form. Thanks for
the info, I'll get a fix for this in the next upload.

no chance the bug has been fixed.

There is a possibility. Several bugfixes went in to 6.9. I obviously can't
guarantee anything, but it's worth a shot.

Package: xserver-xorg
Version: 6.8.2.dfsg.1-11
Severity: important

Sometimes the xserver locks up totally and the whole computer
is running veeery slow. (Noticed by the choppy sound from my speakers. :-)

The xserver uses almost all available cpu, I guess it is only the
kernels safe guard (2.6) that lets other processes get some attention.

I have to log in thru another computer to kill the X-process, only
signal 9 helps. And then the screen keyboard are unusable so
I hvae to reboot anyway. (Is there a way to restore them without
rebooting?)

This happens at most once a week or month, sometimes it has occurred
twice a day, but that's very seldom. And I havn't been able to reproduce
the problem. I'm using nvidias 7174-driver, but this problem has been
around since I started using my nividia card with the xfree86 driver
(at least 6629) so I'm very suspicous about the closed nividia driver.

Anyway, here is a short strace of the X-process:

Hi,

the last update of the xorg packages broke my system. When starting X,
the console blinks briefly and is left blank with a non-blinking cursor
to the upper left. Neither ctrl-alt-f1 nor ctrl-alt-backspace nor chvt 1
work. The xorg.log file (included below) ends far too early and the serve=

indeed seems to crash. The following lines are from kdm's logfile:

Thomas, I see the same behaviour with or without --disable-imake

retesting, I found a typo in the configure script: variable

upgraded to version 6.9. After that I couldn't start X anymore.
Downgrading to xserver-xorg_6.8.2.dfsg.1-11_i386.deb solves the
problem, but since packages.debian is down for a while, I can't get the
xserver-xorg_6.8.2.dfsg.1-11_i386.deb package to have X working again.
Is there another way to get the package/solve the problem?
Thanks,
Halestino

The file /usr/X11R6/lib/modules/input/wacom_drv.so contains an undefined
symbol IsPad. As a result, when the X server attempts to use it, the
server aborts. Naturally, this makes the X server unusable when using
the module (thus severity important).

This happens with xserver-xorg version 6.9.0.dfsg.1-1. It does not
happen with the version I previously had installed (6.8.2.dfsg.1-11).

Here is what the X server prints to stderr when I run startx:

Bug#345929: 6.9.0.dfsg.1-2: radeon: FireGL Mobility T2: whole machine locks hard after some minutes

2006-01-08 Thread Johannes Stezenbach
Package: xserver-xorg
Version: 6.9.0.dfsg.1-2
Followup-For: Bug #345929

I see something which fits some of the other descriptions
for bug #345929:

6.8.2.dfsg.1-11 worked perfect, after upgrade to 6.9.0
my IBM T42p regularly crashes hard (no SysRq, no ping,
the whole thing is just frozen; kernel NMI-watchdog doesn't
kick in, all I can do is power off).

I tried kernels 2.6.14 and 2.6.15 with and without radeonfb,
and I tried to disable acceleration and clock scaling for the
radeon X driver.
Nothing helps.

Sometimes the crash happens already during xdm startup, sometimes
it can take hours for the crash to happen, but usually it crashes
within ten minutes after boot. If I use firefox or gvim the crash
happens sooner than if I just use xterm + vim. If I grab a gvim
window with the mouse and wiggle it around X is likely to crash
within a minute.

I tried using the 6.8.2 radeon driver with 6.9.0 but it seems
the binary formats are incompatible?

For the moment I work around this by using radeonfb + fbdev X driver.

A bug into one of ati driver's sources (radeon_video.c) causes Xorg server to
crash when using it with option NoAccel, due to erroneous dereferencing of
uninitialized pointer.

The bug should be reproducible by anyone using ati driver:

1 - add 'Option NoAccel' to the device section of video card into xorg.conf
2 - restart Xorg
3 - launch any video player (I have personally tested it with totem, xine and
mplayer -- the latter using xv output, x11 doesn't crash the server)

I'm sure that many other programs are able to trigger this bug, but playing a
video is the one by which I've discovered the problem.

I'm attaching a patch that modifies the single line of code involved and that
solves the problem.

When booting a thin client, there is a need to configure the font
server automatically at boot time. To make this happen, we preseed
the configuration at boot time, and call dexconf to generate a new
configuration.

One of the values we want to set this way is the URL to the font
server on the thin client network. This is at present not possible do
to in dexconf. Please add a hidden debconf question to make it
possible to specify the font server URL.

This patch should make it possible. There are two changes needed to
make this happen:

 - Use the debconf value of this template to add an extra FontPath if
   it is present.

 - Add new template $TEMPLATE_BASE/config/fontpath/fontserver to each
server package (xserver-xorg and xserver-xfree86). This template
should be identical for all packages implementing this feature.

I've thought about that, but people are build-depending on it right now,
and we need to essentially force people not to do so. I'll probably add it
back in once the current slate of xlibs-dev bugs is resolved properly.
Sound reasonable?

Ok, as discussed on irc there are two criteria for re-adding this package:

 1) We've completed the xlibs-dev transition without it. This serves as a
forcing device for people to update their build-deps properly

 2) Adding a lintian check for build-dep or dep on x-window-system-dev.
This should help prevent this problem in the future.

I'll also add a note in the package description that this package is meant
entirely for users and not for packages to depend or build-depend on.

Bug#346398: xterm: scrollbar broken; new path

2006-01-08 Thread David Martínez Moreno

On Sun, Jan 08, 2006 at 04:18:58AM +0100, David Martínez Moreno wrote:
Thomas, I see the same behaviour with or without --disable-imake
--disable-narrowproto. The toolbar seems to appear and dissapear in its
  whole erratically. Any other idea?

retesting, I found a typo in the configure script: variable
   $default_narrowproto
is used where it should have been
   $cf_default_narrowproto

I put a copy of that fix along with the other small fixes I have against
 #208 here:

   ftp://invisible-island.net/temp/xterm-208b.patch.gz

Thanks, your patch with --disable-imake --enable-narrowproto did the
trick. I
am going to release a new version right now. Thank you very much.

Best regards,

Ender.

X Strike Force X.Org X11 SVN commit: r1041 - in branches/modular/app/xterm/debian: . patches

2006-01-08 Thread X Strike Force SVN Repository Admin
Author: ender
Date: 2006-01-09 02:33:03 -0500 (Mon, 09 Jan 2006)
New Revision: 1041

Added:

Modified:
   branches/modular/app/xterm/debian/changelog
   branches/modular/app/xterm/debian/patches/series
   branches/modular/app/xterm/debian/rules
Log:
* Added 000_stolen_from_HEAD.diff, with last minute changes from Thomas
  Dickey:
  - fix typo in configure script option --disable-narrowproto.
  - Amend CF_X_FREETYPE changes for pkg-config check to ensure that Xft is
known to that tool.
  - Add an ifdef to allow ./configure --disable-active-icon to work, broken
by new code for testing memory leaks in #208.
* Replaced --disable-narrowproto by --enable-narrowproto in configure line in
order
to deal with toolbar problems due to the absence of NARROWPROTO definition
  (closes: 346398).
