Bug#538868: xserver-xorg-video-radeon: black screen with the driver radeon on a card hd4570

2009-07-28 Thread Michel Dänzer
On Mon, 2009-07-27 at 17:22 +0100, Adrien wrote:
 Package: xserver-xorg-video-radeon
 Version: 1:6.12.2-3
 Justification: renders package unusable
 Severity: grave

I am trying to use the driver radeon on HD4570, but I have only a black
screen and I can't switch to terminals with ctrl+alt+1. I can't access at all
 to gdm.

I have used the Xorg from unstable, and both kernel 2.6.26 and 2.6.30, But I
 have the same result.
For all my test I have used the same Xorg.conf (except for the line « Driver
fglrx of course). generated by the non-free ATI driver.

With the radeonhd driver, I have this in the Xorg.log:
 (EE) No devices detected.

 Fatal server error:
 no screens found

However, the fglrx driver works well with the kernel 2.6.26.

 Config:
 – toshiba laptop with graphic cards hd4570, lspci:
01:00.0 VGA compatible controller: ATI Technologies Inc M92 [Mobility Radeon
 HD 4500 Series]

 – debian testing, with the Xorg from unstable.

I have attached to this mail the 2 Xorg.log obtained with both drivers radeon
and radeonhd, but if you need some other informations, I will be happy to
 provide them.

[...]

 DRM Information from dmesg:
 [1.981003] Linux agpgart interface v0.103
 [ 22.960915] [fglrx] DRM MCIL: MCIL_QuerySystemInfo command :4 not
 implement
 [ 22.961056] [fglrx] DRM MCIL: MCIL_QuerySystemInfo command :4 not
 implement
 [ 22.961102] [fglrx] DRM MCIL: MCIL_QuerySystemInfo command :4 not
 implement

In order to use the free drivers, you have to make sure

  * The fglrx kernel module isn't loaded
  * The X server doesn't load any components installed by fglrx
(grep fglrx Xorg.0.log.radeon*)

The easiest way to achieve this is probably to remove all fglrx
packages.

Bug#486507: libx11-6: Locking assertion failure with vmware-server-console

2009-07-28 Thread Jérémie GUILLAUME

Hi,

Got the same problem as described here... (Lenny 5.0r1).
After some search, I found that the dependency of gtkhtml3.14 which
actually resolves the issue is : gnome-icon-theme.
After installing it, no need to deal with libX11 in wrapper-gtk24.sh
anymore.

Cheers,

Bug#538996: xserver-xorg-video-intel: new version freezes the system

2009-07-28 Thread Salvo Tomaselli
Package: xserver-xorg-video-intel
Version: 2:2.3.2-2+lenny6
Severity: normal

The version in unstable of the intel driver, shows xdm with garbled fonts
and after inserting username and password, it freezes.
So this is the reason you see older version installed. I downgraded...

In order to use the free drivers, you have to make sure

* The fglrx kernel module isn't loaded
* The X server doesn't load any components installed by fglrx
  (grep fglrx Xorg.0.log.radeon*)

The easiest way to achieve this is probably to remove all fglrx

oups ! sorry, it seems that reportbug has automatically included into
the mail some informations from the fglrx driver… which is the one I
was using when I have done this report, because for now I cannot
access my desktop with the free drivers.

So when you're trying to use the free drivers, you're sure the fglrx
kernel module never gets loaded, and there are no messages as above in
dmesg?

However, the two Xorg.log I have attached seems to use the free
drivers (radeon and radeonhd) and the only trace of fglrx I find in
 these files are:

Yes, that's what the second item above refers to. The X server loading
any component installed by fglrx (note not all of them have fglrx in the
name) has definitely caused problems for others trying to use the free
drivers.

Should I test again, with the fglrx driver and the package
firmware-linux desinstalled or it is not necessary ?

firmware-linux will be useful with the free drivers and shouldn't harm
otherwise, but you really need to make sure fglrx is completely out of
the picture when trying the free drivers.

Thanks. I don't see anything wrong. How do the framerate and CPU usage
  compare when running

  /usr/lib/xscreensaver/hypertorus -delay 0 -fps

  ?

With DRI fps is pretty much constant around 8.0

Hmm, that's pretty low, I'm getting around 40 fps on an RV350.

It's no wonder it is slow. Even rendering by a Celeron CPU is at times
faster than what my GPU shows.

That's weird though, your GPU should be at least about as fast as mine.

BTW, you can force the swrast driver by setting the environment
  variable
LIBGL_ALWAYS_SOFTWARE=1 even when the DRI is enabled.

With this option fps ranges from 7.5 to 12 depending on object view
  angle.

These are values in fullscreen and no delay. Both cause 100% system
load but the DRI one causes system load and the software one causes
user load.

It might be interesting to find out where the CPU time is spent with
   hardware acceleration.

It might be another unrelated DRI problem because in
xscreeensaver-demo the CPU is almost unused and the animation is still
slow. It's actually quite interesting, though. Turning on the fps
display makes the system time go almost 100% even in the demo.

That may be because the 3D driver doesn't accelerate glBitmap(), so the
FPS text is rendered in software.

I wonder how I could find where the time is spent. If it is system
time it is spent in kernel, right?

E.g. oprofile can profile the kernel as well if it has access to the
uncompressed vmlinux binary.

ok, so I have done this:

1°/ remove the fglrx drivers with the
 command /usr/share/ati/fglrx-uninstall.sh [...]

Looks like that wasn't thorough enough:

(II) Loading /usr/lib/xorg/modules/extensions//libdri.so
(II) Module dri: vendor=X.Org Foundation
compiled for 7.4.0, module version = 1.0.0
(II) Loading extension XFree86-DRI
(II) Loading sub module fglrxdrm
(II) LoadModule: fglrxdrm
(WW) Warning, couldn't open module fglrxdrm
(II) UnloadModule: fglrxdrm
(EE) Can't load FireGL DRM library (libfglrxdrm.so).
(II) UnloadModule: dri
(II) Unloading /usr/lib/xorg/modules/extensions//libdri.so
(EE) Failed to load module dri (a required submodule could not be loaded, 0)

Apparently at least /usr/lib/xorg/modules/extensions/libdri.so was still
from fglrx.

Anyway, the black screen might be unrelated to this but due to a failure
to detect / drive the LVDS panel correctly. Maybe others can help with
that.

3°/ I boot in single user mode, backup the Xorg.log, and reinstall the
fglrx from the ATI package (not the debian package), and reboot again.

FWIW, I strongly recommend against installing it unpackaged, that's more
or less asking for problems like above. Even if the Debian packages
aren't suitable for some reason, the fglrx installer should be able to
generate .debs.

The problem is likely that the patching has been wrongly removed: the
build target still depend on patch while there shouldn't be any patch
rule in there... I'll look at it.

(Also, when I built it with DEB_BUILD_OPTIONS=parallel=3, the build process
went ahead and ran autoreconf even though the patch had failed. That to
me indicates that there's a missing dependency somewhere which could result
in autoreconf being run on the unpatched code before the patching is done.)

Bug#539090: xserver-xorg-video-intel: Extreme slowness after upgrade from 2.7.1-1

2009-07-28 Thread Dylan Thurston
Package: xserver-xorg-video-intel
Version: 2:2.8.0-1
Severity: normal

Certain drawing operations seem to be extremely slow after a recent
upgrade from 2.7.1-1. I notice this in firefox or in okular (KDE's
PDF viewer), but it's most obvious, oddly, in some of the options from
the game 'loopy' from sgt-puzzles, in the settings with lots of
diagonal lines. For instance, 'loopy 9x9t4' takes about 45 seconds to
start; this is new behaviour since the upgrade.

I'm using a 915GM on a HP nc6220 notebook, with a 1400x1050 display.
I set my virtual screen size to 1600x1200 since I sometimes use an
external monitor with that resolution. I notice the slowness whether
or not using the external monitor.

(I'll note that this upgrade did also fix two different display
glitches: in the older versions, text mode used to get corrupted, and
the screen would occasionally flicker momentarily.)

2009-07-28 Thread Tom Epperly
Package: compiz-core
Version: 0.8.2-6

I never explicitly changed to compiz as my window manager. I guess one
of the apt-get upgrade's made it the default. Starting sometime last
week when I logged in, no window manager came up. I had to bring up a
terminal window and run metacity --replace.

Here is output from running compiz --relace.
