[Declude.JunkMail] Hey Scott - Here's a feature request
Scott, I found this website and thought that it would be really cool if you guys could write a program like this challenge/response that worked with Declude spam. I would absolutely pay for it! http://about.mailblocks.com/features/challenge.aspx Greg --- [This E-mail was scanned for viruses by Declude Virus (http://www.declude.com)] --- This E-mail came from the Declude.JunkMail mailing list. The challenge/response has some fundamental problems. These include auto notifications, newsletters, automated website ordering acknowledgments and so forth. I think the consensus is it is not acceptable to use. I found this website and thought that it would be really cool if you guys could write a program like this challenge/response that worked with Declude spam. I would absolutely pay for it! http://about.mailblocks.com/features/challenge.aspx We actually started work on this a while back, but stopped. While it is extremely effective in reducing spam *you* see, it also has a very high false positive rate, and other problems. Top 9 reasons not to use C/R [1] You end up being a spammer (the majority of spam sent to you will result in confirmation requests being sent to innocent victims) [2] Spammers now send pretend confirmation requests, presumably to make people less likely to respond to C/R requests [3] Many people respond to C/R requests that they never initiated [4] C/R companies have been known to send out spam and harvest addresses of people sending to their customers, and apparently sell those addressses to spammers [5] The C/R system is patented, so most anti-spam programs using C/R have legal liabilities waiting to be ironed out [6] Confirmations sent to mailing lists won't work [7] Confirmations sent to others using C/R cause problems [8] People like me that offer a free service (helping people with DNS) end up losing money (by spending time investigating and responding to C/R systems, dealing with spam received as a result, etc.) and sometimes get fed up with C/R systems and eventually stop offering free advice (never knowing how many people won't get it), harming everybody. RE: [Declude.JunkMail] Hey Scott - Here's a feature request
Greg: Just one word... NO Please don't do it and don't ask for it. C/R systems, in my opinion, will soon kill online commerce - either automatic receipts have to be changed or C/R system has to go. At our company we started blocking EarthLink C/R systems.. Imagine getting 500+ C/R's from people making payments. We finally decided January 1 to block and not respond to the responses since it was taking so much time and effort. Every email required you to go to a site and enter a code .. We clearly indicate what email address people are going to get their receipts from and if they wish to block it then it is their business. The other day someone had a message saying if you wish for me to receive your email call me at this number and I will authorize you and this was for a receipt for payment... Imagine the long distance charges we have to pay just to make sure people get their receipts.
