RE: [Declude.JunkMail] new root server B address

2005-09-26 Thread Andy Schmidt
Hi,

Obviously, there is no harm in updating the root hints - but the effect is
probably next to nil.

If you turn on the advanced display, you'll be able to see the cache for
. and for net | root-servers | b and you'll see that the address is
current. You can also use NSLOOKUP to query for b.root-servers.net. and
confirm that the correct IP address is being used.

The hint is only needed when the service is started. As long as any of the
hints are valid, the name server will be able to obtain the CURRENT list of
root servers and use that during operation.

The only effect of the 'bad' b server is, that one in 13 service starts,
it will take a second DNS lookup before the root servers are known.

Best Regards
Andy Schmidt

I use the same link, which in turn will point you to IANA's most popular
links, which gets you, for example, here:

http://www.internic.net/zones/named.root

Which shows that the most recent update to the root hints was Jan-29-2004.

And no, Microsoft DNS never refreshes the root hints file, nor do patches.
The IE patch that is occasionally made available is about SSL certificate
authorities and revocations.

I thought the Microsoft patches were taking care of root
server updates (we run MS DNS), but we still had 128.9.0.107
 for b.root-servers.netshould've checked long before
now We had j.root-servers.net wrong as well.

For those that want a complete reference, try www.root-servers.org.

 Hi, all-

I was catching up on some stuff tonight and discovered that I
 still had the
old address for the B root server in my cache.dns files. This
 changed over a
year ago, but I missed it at the time. Just in case you also
 missed it, I
thought I would pass it along.

The new address for b.root-servers.net is 192.228.79.201

If you have another address for b.root-servers.net, you
 should change it.
