Re: [libreoffice-design] Suggestion: Change LibreOffice Icon

2020-12-10 Thread Heiko Tietze

Welcome to the design group!

Besides what others have commented, we have this page where you may get
inspiration from and could add your proposal(s):
https://wiki.documentfoundation.org/Design/Mimetype_Icons/Proposals

The issue about boring main app icon has been reported here
https://bugs.documentfoundation.org/show_bug.cgi?id=126074

And find more resources about the design team, eg. how to get in contact, at
https://wiki.documentfoundation.org/Design (some nice chitchating on Telegram)

Cheers,
Heiko

Hello everyone,

I'm fairly new to LibreOffice so I hope I'm sending this to the right

place!

After having installed LibreOffice on my laptop today, I really liked the

designs of all the applications like Writer, Calc, Draw etc. but found the
main white LibreOffice icon to not really fit into all of them. The plain
design - in my opinion - looks quite dull and isn't pleasing to look at. It
doesn't stand out from other programs and is easily overlooked due to it's
simplicity.

In the will to change the icon on my desktop and startmenu, I stumbled upon

an icon online, that would really well replace the current white icon!
I'll attatch the .ico to this mail so you can have a look at it. I found it
here:

I'd like to suggest that you all consider changing the LibreOffice icon to

the one I attached to this mail or something similar you design by
yourselves.
This would - in my opinion - really boost the overall look of LibreOffice
and improve the impact it has on your desktop!

Sadly I don't quite know how to replace it in the files myself; I only

managed to change it for my desktop and startmenu yet (not anywhere else).
I'll trust on you to get that done if you decide on implementing my idea.

That's all I had to say for now, thank you for your attention and have nice

day!

My personal hope is that TDF allocates something to fund Bayu's work
so that he completes a full suite of application icons as well as MIME
type icons, because currently we improperly reuse app icons to
represent both our applications and files, which has been detrimental
to our brand.

Useless to base a new identity in just adding text. That won't work in
small sizes, like the system dock or taskbar, and in general is the
very opposite of a flexible visual identity.
So no.

What we want to work on is in this visual proposal by one of our
talented Indonesian contributors:

You are indeed! Welcome to the community :-)

Attachments aren't allowed on these mailing lists, but thanks for
sharing the link. Note that we have guidelines and best practices for
logos here:

https://wiki.documentfoundation.org/Marketing/Branding#Guidelines_and_Best_Practices

So putting things inside the document symbol is generally frowned upon.
Also, and this is just my personal taste: the icon you shared is perhaps
more interesting than the plain white document, but on a small
taskbar/dock, I think the "The Document Foundation" text would be too
hard to read.

But that's just my take -- what do others think?

Mike
