[Bug 54741] Re: [Bug 54741] Re: New windows stealing focus -- and passwords?

2006-08-01 Thread Martin Pitt
Hi,

jmspeex [2006-08-01 5:18 -]:
that this doesn't seem to be a general nautilus issue

I assume you meant metacity issue here.

*blush* of course, sorry.

I think there must be some
soft of confusion in here. On all three Dapper machines I have, I have
yet to see a *single* case of a window opening *without* getting focus.

Maybe we do talk about different issues here. If you are currently
typing, then new windows do not get the focus. However, they do get
the focus if you didn't type anything in the last second or so. I. e.
the behaviour tries to avoid suddenly typing stuff into another
window, but if you merely use the mouse to start an application, the
new window will have the focus. I just tried it again (with something
like 'sleep 5; nautilus' and typing (or not) in another terminal).

Can you please confirm that this doesn't work for you?

For the record, I do not consider this as an 'Oh my god, the sky has
fallen' bug, but focus stealing is annoying and dangerous enough to
make sure it gets eventually fixed. If there is a problem in dapper,
we need to judge the patch complexity whether or not we will fix it in
dapper.

[Bug 54741] Re: New windows stealing focus -- and passwords?

2006-08-01 Thread jmspeex
Funny, doing the 'sleep 5; nautilus' *and* typing in another window is
the first case of things (sort of) behaving correctly. Any process other
than nautilus steals the focus. If I try the same with xterm, gnome-
terminal, konsole, gimp, ... the new window steals the focus. Clearly,
it should be the WM's responsability to enforce sane focus policies, or
else we'll end up filing thousands of upstream bugs. Even if it worked,
one second timeout isn't very useful because it typically takes more
than that between the time you type ssh remote.machine.net and the
time you type your password.

[Bug 49817] Re: taskbar blinks after restoring session

Sorry, you are right. dapper-updates was not in my sources.list.

But the problem still exist. It didn't appear Sorry, you are right.
dapper-updates was not in my sources.list.

But the problem still exist. It didn't appear when you click on
epiphany, before the websites from the restored windows are reloaded.
So, if you want try out this, I suggest these following steps:

1. Open different Epiphany windows with remote URLs
2. Open a few gnome-terminal windows
3. Put them on different workspaces/virtual desktops
4. Make sure your session will be saved, when you logout from GNOME
5. Logout
6. Login, but do not react (don't use mouse and keyboard) until everything is
restored and your GNOME is completely loaded

Does any taskbar item blink?

I guess we have here two cool features:
- restore session
- got users attention with blinking taskbar items on new windows or new content
in existing windows (e.g. a website is loaded epiphany)

But the combination of this features is annoying. Maybe it's not easy to
fix, even though it is a small problem. gnome-session should report
the apps, that they are restored, so they didn't blink or something..

[Bug 54777] Panel applets break auto-hide

2006-08-01 Thread Roshan Shariff
Public bug reported:

When a context menu is opened on panel applets or notification area
icons, and an option selected, the panel no-longer auto-hides.

Steps to Reproduce:

1. Set a panel to auto-hide

2a. Start Rhythmbox. Right click on its notification area icon and
select Play.

2b. Get the update-notifier to show its icon. Right click and select
Show Updates.

2c. Start Tomboy Notes. Right click on its notification icon and click
on Preferences, or left-click on it and open a note.

2d. Same as (2c) but with the Tomboy Notes panel applet.

2e. Right click on the Volume Control and select Open Volume Control.

2f. Right click on the clock and select Preferences.

2g. Same as above but with the Workspace Switcher

2h. Right click on the Trash applet and select About.

2g. Right click on the Deskbar applet and select Preferences.

Expected Result:

The panel auto-hides after completing any of the above.

Observed Result:

The panel does not hide itself until you mouse-over some part of it and
then move the mouse out of the panel again.

Counter-Examples:

This bug does not trigger on the context menus of the Drawer applet or
the Menu Bar

I'm using Ubuntu Dapper with gnome-panel 2.14.2-0ubuntu1

[Bug 54764] RFE: Handling of stitched images

2006-08-01 Thread Aaron Whitehouse
Public bug reported:

I own a Canon PowerShot A85 camera and am using gthumb on Dapper.

I have taken some photos in Stitched mode. This keeps a bit of the
previous picture on the screen so that one can take multiple photos that
line up into one long photo.

If I use the proprietary software in Windows, the following happens:
1) The photos are imported
2) The fact that I have taken photos in this mode is detected by the software
and I am taken into a Stitching programme. This may be done off filenames as
I cannot immediately see any tags about it.
3) The software automatically attempts to overlay the photos in the correct
places and produces a chain of photos.
4) A square is drawn around the photos to give the biggest possible connected
photo (when using this mode, one often slips up or down and this cuts off the
bits either side).

For most photos, this is all automatic and merely requires the user to
confirm things.

I would love to see this feature implemented in gthumb - it would give
the feature to all cameras, not just mine. I realise that it is a lot of
work and suggest that perhaps it could be done as follows:

1) Create a sub-programme to work with the photos manually. This would probably
need the ability to manually move the photos around and the ability to draw a
square to create one photo from them.
2) Create an option to select some photos and open the programme in (1). This
would mean that the user could manually select photos to be stitched and
somehow select Stitch these Photos.
3) Try to automate the process of lining the photos up by matching similar
regions and the process of drawing a square around the combined picture.
4) Try to detect sets of stitched photos - this is likely camera specific. If
all the above is done, this could be implemented camera-by-camera with the
owners of unsupported cameras keeping to the manual method.
5) Perhaps a dialogue could be displayed after importing asking whether or not
the user would like to enter the stitching programme. The detected sets could
be displayed as a list of small pictures on one side.

Note that I have also requested this functionality in f-spot as Bug
#54762

[Bug 52405] Re: gnome-panel eats 50% cpu for half an hour and flickers

2006-08-01 Thread Gustaf
Yes Matt, unless it has dependencies. To me it's not really an option. Removing
menu-xdg would mean to remove:
kcontrol kdelibs4c2a kicker koctave kwave libkonq4 menu-xdg tora

But the problem still exists, and this is what's so troublesome with things
like gnome. The problem is that the menu flickers, and the app goes crazy just
because a symlink is pointing to outer space. To me, THIS is the bug, and the
'solutions' above are hacks which 'might' work, but it doesn't solve the bug.
It is caused by bad programming, not because of vague packaging. A program
'crashing' because a symlink (which is not required by the program) doesn't
exist or doesn't point to a valid file is a badly written program.
In gnome, bugs reappear year after year, and the real problem doesn't get
solved (like in gconf/gsd, which is a big jar of bugs).

Btw, it's /etc/xdg/menus/debian-menu.menu, not /etc/xdg/menu/debian-
menu.menu

[Bug 54362] Re: Offer the correct driver in driver selection

2006-08-01 Thread Pascal De Vuyst
I'm using Dapper 6.06 LTS.
I have the same problem with my HP DeskJet 3820.

Step to reproduce:
1) Start gnome-cups-manager.
2) Click New printer.
3) Under Use a detected printer select the printer that was detected by the
HPLIP backend, usually this entry has an underscore in it. In my case HP
DESKJET_3820.
4) Click Forward.

Now you see that the wrong printer model is (pre)selected by gnome-cups-manager
(see screenshot in attachment).
DeskJet is (pre)selected while DeskJet 3820 is available in the list!

This problem only appears for printers that use the HPLIP backend. When I
choose the CUPS USB backend entry under Use a detected printer the right
printer model is (pre)selected.
So it looks like gnome-cups-manager handles the hplip backend different than
the usb backend.

This bug affects nearly everyone with a HP InkJet printer, since the
HPLIP backend should be used with HP printers to allow printer
maintenance.

[Bug 54779] Re: Keyring password

2006-08-01 Thread Emmanuel Pacaud
I don't mind if evolution is using gnome-keyring.

Issue is until now, evolution never asked for a keyring passwd, and suddenly
ask for one.
The good thing is I've figured out which passwd it asked, and remembered its
value...

But now, I would like to have the previous behaviour back, i.e. no
passwd when launching evolution, and it's not easy to find how to
achieve that.

So issues are:

  - unwanted change in evolution behaviour (new passwd dialog).
  - no hint about where to change/remove this password.

Regarding gnome-keyring-manager itself, I did'nt find a way to change
this password, but that's not an issue related to evolution.

[Bug 54808] Nautilus (or gnome-vfs) should resolve symlinks in fstab before attempting mount

2006-08-01 Thread Mantas Kriaučiūnas
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: nautilus

If a link exists in fstab, such as /dev/cdrom, instead of the actual
path, /dev/hdc or something, nautilus will not mount it and displays an
error message instead - detailed error message is:

mount: can't find /dev/hdc in /etc/fstab or /etc/mtab

My /etc/fstab contains this line:

/dev/cdrom /media/cdrom iso9660,udf noauto,users,defaults,ro 0 0

~:/# ls -la /dev/cdrom
lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 3 2006-08-01 16:29 /dev/cdrom - hdc

when I replace /dev/cdrom by /dev/hdc in /etc/fstab then nautilus mounts
CD disks without problems, but lots of people have removable CD/DVD
drives, and udev always creates symlink /dev/cdrom to first CD drive.

[Bug 34435] Re: [Bug 34435] Re: Cairo and ATI RENDER extension cause scrambled buttons in UbuntuLooks

2006-08-01 Thread Mark Shuttleworth
This is a deep upstream issue that requires knowledge of the ATI driver
and Cairo, and their interaction. I believe it has been reported
upstream (see the bugwatch on
https://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=5518 on the report) but
there's not a lot of action there.

In Edgy, with newer drivers AND a newer Cairo, this problem is still
evident. Perhaps someone who is subscribed here know who to nudge
upstream to look at this?

[Bug 12893] Re: Shouldn't put .Trash-$USER on removable devices

2006-08-01 Thread Gabriel Bauman
I think the default Dapper behaviour makes sense.

If I put an file on my removable device into the Trash, and then walk to
another machine, it's very convenient that the file appears in the trash
on that machine too.

Most people are only upset about this because USB mass-storage cameras
aren't handled well in Ubuntu. *Cameras and MP3 players* should not
allow .Trash-$USER to exist - plain USB keys should.

Matt,

First a big thank you for this.
The update to xorg-server 1.1.1-0ubuntu3 works perfect here !
Glad i'am back on my T42.
Rebooted well 10 times and the server starts fine, first I thought that my
video card was broken but I have a dual boot with dapper but that was not
possible.
Glad i'am back on my T42
I see on your webpage that you uploaded a packages
xserver-xorg-video-ati_6.6.1-0ubuntu1_i386.deb,must I test this binary or leave
it now
this way?

Thanks again !

[Bug 51227] Re: [Bug 51227] Re: cannot restart, logout, shutdown

2006-08-01 Thread Phil Borman
Mathieu Pillard wrote:
I had this problem once when the lookback interface wasn't up for some
reason. Just in case it's your problem here, here is a quick list of things
 to check:
 * ping 127.0.0.1
 * ping yourhostname
 * ifconfig -a | grep UP LOOPBACK RUNNING

If any of these fail, or don't show a result, you have a problem. Check
your /etc/hosts file (is your hostname correctly setup there if it needs
to?), check your /etc/network/interfaces (got a lo entry? is it set to
 auto and inet loopback ?)

Also, another symptom will be that stracing gnome-session-save --kill
will block on some network stuff with 127.0.0.1 or something similar.

Thanks for the response.

The problem seems to be mythfrontend. If that program is running then
shutdown fails. If I kill mythfrontend first it all works properly.

I've downloaded the sourcecode to mythfrontend to try and see if it does
anything unusual, but no joy so far.

Phil.

[Bug 54832] Cannot save file once shutdown commnced if in different dektop

2006-08-01 Thread naps
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gedit

Not sure if this counts as a bug but I find it user-unfriendly and it works
better in other distros. The difficulty arises because I like to use gedit to
jot down stuff (web addresses etc) whiile working on another desktop. Then I
can switch back to the desktop with gedit when I need to. But if I do not
switch back to the desktop wih gedit and forget that I have not saved or closed
gedit and want to shut down:
Do this:- click on icon to shut down PC.
Result:- nothing appears to happen. I cannot switch to the desktop with the
unsaved gedit to save my file or contnue working or shutdown. Checking
carefully the thumbnail with gedit shows another window has opened (presumably
warning me to save my work) but not on the desktop on which I am stranded.
There is no way to save my work though I can continue the shutdown and lose the
work in gedit as described below.
Work around: i) ctrl-alt-backspace or switch to another console then ii)
shutdown or iii) kill gedit
My setup: gedit 2.14.4 running on Ubuntu 6.06 (Dapper)
PC: Acer 4652LMI
Would be nice if the window to save my work came up on the desk-top I was

That's a known bug and duplicate of bug #33673

how does it works better in other distros? we don't patch gedit nor
GNOME for that, that's the upstream behaviour, if some other
distribution has a patch for that the patch would be welcome upstream.
What distribution behaves differently? what happens on it?

Same here. Using reiser filesystem for partitions. Laptop with pentium M
processor. I can see that gam_server uses 99.9% cpu then I start amaroK
but after some seconds it drops to normal 0.4% during playtime. Here
comes the weird part: sometimes gam_server uses more than 80% for no
reason (e.g. amarok is in system tray and not used) and quitting amaroK
doesn't help. During this odd behaviour gam_server apparently writes
repeatedly invalid lenght some numbers into ~/.xsession-errors.
