[Bug 210069] Re: [Hardy] gnome-display-properties shows wrong size
Looks like your monitor is reporting its dimensions as: (II) intel(0): Max H-Image Size [cm]: horiz.: 31 vert.: 23 ... (II) intel(0): clock: 25.2 MHz Image Size: 306 x 230 mm which is 12 x 9, which calculates out to a 15 diagonal. I confirmed this via your monitor's manual (www.p4c.philips.com/files/1/17e4222e82/17e4222e82_dfu_eng.pdf), which says: Recommended display area: 12.0 x 9.0 / 306 x 230 mm So... sounds like Philip's marketing department is rounding up to 17, but internally coding it a 15 monitor. So there is no error in gnome-display-properties after all, it seems to be accurately reporting the dimensions specified by Philips' engineering. [Bug 210729] [NEW] Desktop icons not shown when switching to a lower screen resolution
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: nautilus I am using my GNOME desktop on my laptop with two different screen resolutions, depending on whether I'm using my external 1680x1050 VGA monitor or my 1280x800 laptop's display. When using the bigger resolution VGA monitor, if I locate desktop icons on places outside the laptop's lower resolution, these icons are not shown when switching back to my laptop's LCD display since they are outside it's display range. I believe this should not happen, so IMHO nautilus should be expected to detect icons located outside current display's resolution and still try to relocate them to a place I could find them in a best effort location strategy. I would also expect these relocation changes not be permanent and still get icons at my original location when going back to my greater display resolution. In theory the revert dialog should work properly with this. I've only tested on my dev box, and it mostly worked - I suspect the failures are due to peculiarities of my development environment, but don't know for sure (notably, as long as I *increased* the resolution with each change, it was fine, but if I decreased, it blew up). I would greatly appreciate it if people could test these on as many different platforms as possible and let me know the results. To test after installing and rebooting, try running gnome-display- properties and then changing to different resolutions, rotations, and refresh rates. [Bug 210538] [NEW] [hardy] gdm hangs after upgrade and reboot
You have been subscribed to a public bug: After today's update (1 Apr 2008, no this is not an April Fools joke), GDM hangs upon reboot. It is impossible to log in graphically. GDM hangs immediately prior to the greeter with a rotating busy pointer. Pointer moves with mouse. Keyboard is unresponsive except I can switch to console sessions with CTRL-ALT-F(1-etc) and can restart X with CTRL- ALT-Backspace (but GDM just hangs again in same manner). If I switch to the console with CTRL-ALT-F1, I can login but issuing sudo /etc/init.d/gdm restart doesn't fix the problem. I can also login via SSH over the network. ** Affects: gdm (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New -- [hardy] gdm hangs after upgrade and reboot https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/210538 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is subscribed to gdm in ubuntu. -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs

[Bug 210538] Re: [hardy] gdm hangs after upgrade and reboot
This appears to be related to the GDM face browser / graphical greeter. Simon, were you using the face browser? Lots of discussion here: http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=742511 Workaround is to go into console, manually reconfigure GDM to use the standard greeter. 1.Press Ctrl-Alt-F1 2. Log in as an administrative user (someone who can use sudo) 3. Edit gdm.conf eg: sudo nano /etc/gdm/gdm.conf 4. Search for: Greeter=/usr/lib/gdm/gdmgreeter and change this to: Greeter=/usr/lib/gdm/gdmlogin ** Changed in: gdm (Ubuntu) Sourcepackagename: None = gdm -- [hardy] gdm hangs after upgrade and reboot https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/210538 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is subscribed to gdm in ubuntu. -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs

I have the same problem. For me it happened when I upgraded my RAM from 1GB to 4GB. First I thought it might be a problem with MTRRs, but it seems only gdm is making problems. [Bug 210746] [NEW] nautilus Couldn't display smb://HOST/folder/. Error: Connection timed out Please select another viewer and try again (sporadic)
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: nautilus In Hardy when trying to browse Windows network using places-- network nautilus hangs for a while until I get the message: Couldn't display smb://myhost/myfolder/. Error: Connection timed out Please select another viewer and try again It does this only sporadically, and it only does this on only one of my 4 pcs at home, when accessing the same smb server. Only occurred after upgrading from gutsy to hardy (all other pcs have been upgraded to hardy successfully). Note that it allows you to browse at the level smb://myhost/ (ie get a list of shares) but not go any deeper (although as i said this is sporadic, sometimes it works) I thought that this was potentially a duplicate of bug #139971, but i'm not using ldap or anything like that and also this seems to be a new regression for hardy However, like #139971 If i right click a folder and then click open in konquerer the samba share can be browsed just fine. Following a technique used in bug #139971 I did a gnomevfs-ls smb://myhost/myfolder and the contents of that folder displayed to the terminal just fine. [Bug 197673] Re: gnome-display-properties should revert change automatically if not acknowledged
Heh, I should have read this bug before spamming the ubuntu-x mailing list. Long story short: as acknowledged here, I managed to screw my only monitor (my laptop screen) via gnome-display-properties. It was even more serious, since I've just discovered that the offending file is .gnome2/montiors.xml (I somehow expected this to be in .gconf/) By the way, a reinstall might *not* solve the problem. If you have a separate /home partition, and the user you create during the install is the same (same name, uid and gid) you had before (very likely in a home computer), you will still have the borked monitors.xml when you boot after install. -- gnome-display-properties should revert change automatically if not acknowledged https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/197673 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is subscribed to gnome-control-center in ubuntu. -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs
