[Bug 205362] Re: system monitor update interval is not in seconds

2008-04-02 Thread Cinar Sahin
I can confirm this. Setting the interval to 1 second causes about 50
updates for a 30 second interval. The graphs are drawn correctly, the
only problem is the number of updates.

[Bug 210684] [NEW] gvfs/webdav can't rename files in nautilus

2008-04-02 Thread John Clemens
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gvfs

hardy updates as of today.

Just set up a webdav share on my private network so my family could have
(non-NFS) shares on thier computers. My laptop running hardy can
connect to the dav share through nautilus and create and edit files, but
it can not rename files. It says 'could not rename file, operation
not supported by backend'. Seems like Konqueror can do it just fine so
i don't think it's a server problem, i suspect a nautilus gvfs problem.
Is the GVFS/webdav backend supposed to support renaming files?

[Bug 210069] Re: [Hardy] gnome-display-properties shows wrong size

2008-04-02 Thread Bryce Harrington
Looks like your monitor is reporting its dimensions as:

(II) intel(0): Max H-Image Size [cm]: horiz.: 31 vert.: 23
...
(II) intel(0): clock: 25.2 MHz Image Size: 306 x 230 mm

which is 12 x 9, which calculates out to a 15 diagonal.

I confirmed this via your monitor's manual
(www.p4c.philips.com/files/1/17e4222e82/17e4222e82_dfu_eng.pdf), which
says:

  Recommended display area: 12.0 x 9.0 / 306 x 230 mm

So... sounds like Philip's marketing department is rounding up to 17,
but internally coding it a 15 monitor.

So there is no error in gnome-display-properties after all, it seems to
be accurately reporting the dimensions specified by Philips'
engineering. There isn't anything we can do about their marketing
department exaggerating numbers... ;-)

[Bug 210694] [NEW] [hardy] GDM is very slow to appear

2008-04-02 Thread Vytas
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gdm

After updates of yesterday, GDM is very slow to appear.
System: up to date hardy i386

The empty screen appears with a busy cursor, and actual login information
appears after 90 second or so.
You can see this behaviour of doing nothing for a minute in straces (please
note it took me some time to attach to gdm, so the actual delay is even bigger
than depicted in the logs).

GDM spawns secondary pids, I attach logs of both.

[Bug 210729] [NEW] Desktop icons not shown when switching to a lower screen resolution

2008-04-02 Thread MiguelGL
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: nautilus

I am using my GNOME desktop on my laptop with two different screen
resolutions, depending on whether I'm using my external 1680x1050 VGA
monitor or my 1280x800 laptop's display.

When using the bigger resolution VGA monitor, if I locate desktop icons
on places outside the laptop's lower resolution, these icons are not
shown when switching back to my laptop's LCD display since they are
outside it's display range.

I believe this should not happen, so IMHO nautilus should be expected to
detect icons located outside current display's resolution and still try
to relocate them to a place I could find them in a best effort
location strategy. I would also expect these relocation changes not be
permanent and still get icons at my original location when going back to
my greater display resolution.

I'm running Hardy Heron beta with updated packages as of bug report
timestamp, but I have been experiencing this issue in Gutsy before I
upgraded.

[Bug 197673] Re: gnome-display-properties should revert change automatically if not acknowledged

2008-04-02 Thread Bryce Harrington
Florent, cool, I'll take a look at your patch tomorrow.

Meanwhile, I've continued work on my end, and have a new update
available for testing:

http://people.ubuntu.com/~bryce/Uploads/gnome-desktop_2.22.0-0ubuntu4.dsc
http://people.ubuntu.com/~bryce/Uploads/gnome-control-center_2.22.0-0ubuntu4.dsc

http://people.ubuntu.com/~bryce/Uploads/gnome-settings-daemon_2.22.0-0ubuntu1_i386.deb
http://people.ubuntu.com/~bryce/Uploads/gnome-control-center_2.22.0-0ubuntu4_i386.deb

I don't think I have all the dependencies specified correctly, but just
install all of the above and reboot. In theory the revert dialog should
work properly with this. I've only tested on my dev box, and it mostly
worked - I suspect the failures are due to peculiarities of my
development environment, but don't know for sure (notably, as long as I
*increased* the resolution with each change, it was fine, but if I
decreased, it blew up). I would greatly appreciate it if people could
test these on as many different platforms as possible and let me know
the results.

To test after installing and rebooting, try running gnome-display-
properties and then changing to different resolutions, rotations, and
refresh rates. On ATI, I already know rotation fails horribly, and with
-nv it seems not supported at all; but it ought to work correctly on
-intel.

[Bug 210538] [NEW] [hardy] gdm hangs after upgrade and reboot

2008-04-02 Thread Launchpad Bug Tracker
You have been subscribed to a public bug:

After today's update (1 Apr 2008, no this is not an April Fools joke),
GDM hangs upon reboot. It is impossible to log in graphically.

GDM hangs immediately prior to the greeter with a rotating busy pointer.
Pointer moves with mouse. Keyboard is unresponsive except I can switch
to console sessions with CTRL-ALT-F(1-etc) and can restart X with CTRL-
ALT-Backspace (but GDM just hangs again in same manner).

If I switch to the console with CTRL-ALT-F1, I can login but issuing
sudo /etc/init.d/gdm restart doesn't fix the problem.

I can also login via SSH over the network.

[Bug 210538] Re: [hardy] gdm hangs after upgrade and reboot

2008-04-02 Thread Andrew Oakley
This appears to be related to the GDM face browser / graphical greeter.
Simon, were you using the face browser?

Lots of discussion here:
http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=742511

Workaround is to go into console, manually reconfigure GDM to use the
standard greeter.

1.Press Ctrl-Alt-F1

2. Log in as an administrative user (someone who can use sudo)

3. Edit gdm.conf eg: sudo nano /etc/gdm/gdm.conf

4. Search for: Greeter=/usr/lib/gdm/gdmgreeter
and change this to: Greeter=/usr/lib/gdm/gdmlogin

[Bug 210694] Re: [hardy] GDM is very slow to appear

2008-04-02 Thread Mika Fischer
I have the same problem. For me it happened when I upgraded my RAM from
1GB to 4GB. First I thought it might be a problem with MTRRs, but it
seems only gdm is making problems.

KDM works fine and if I start gnome-sesion via $HOME/.xsession, this
works too...

I'm using the Human-theme with face browser.

I'm not sure how I can debug this. I tried stracing, but I would have to
use -f which is really really slow stracing the X server and so on...

Ok, I've been debugging this with Alexander's help on IRC, and I've tracked it

[Bug 210746] [NEW] nautilus Couldn't display smb://HOST/folder/. Error: Connection timed out Please select another viewer and try again (sporadic)

2008-04-02 Thread muzzamo
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: nautilus

In Hardy when trying to browse Windows network using places-- network
nautilus hangs for a while until I get the message:

Couldn't display smb://myhost/myfolder/.
Error: Connection timed out
Please select another viewer and try again

It does this only sporadically, and it only does this on only one of my
4 pcs at home, when accessing the same smb server. Only occurred after
upgrading from gutsy to hardy (all other pcs have been upgraded to hardy
successfully). Note that it allows you to browse at the level
smb://myhost/ (ie get a list of shares) but not go any deeper (although
as i said this is sporadic, sometimes it works)

I thought that this was potentially a duplicate of bug #139971, but i'm
not using ldap or anything like that and also this seems to be a new
regression for hardy

However, like #139971 If i right click a folder and then click open in
konquerer the samba share can be browsed just fine.

Following a technique used in bug #139971 I did a gnomevfs-ls
smb://myhost/myfolder and the contents of that folder displayed to the
terminal just fine.

I Upgraded to hardy about a week ago and it has been doing it since then
even as I have updated other packages. Currently using Nautlius
1:2.22.1-0ubuntu1 .

I also tried adding a new user to the system (and hence getting new
gnome settings) and this didn't work either.

[Bug 210740] [NEW] gnome-display-properties: resolution change does not do anything for internal notebook display

2008-04-02 Thread Andreas Schildbach
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-control-center

On Hardy beta, dist-upgraded today, running on an Intel i915GMS (Dell
Latitude X1), having an external monitor connected (Dell 2405):

Changing resolution in gnome-display-properties only works for the
external monitor. Changing resolution for the internal display does not
have any effect.

I can switch the internal resolution to Off, which switches the
internal display off as expected. I cannot, however, switch the internal
display back on by selecting any resolution (again, nothing happens).

Ok, thanks for the workaround, I'll give it a try. Yes, I was using the

[Bug 62400] Re: Podcasts directory should be created when required

2008-04-02 Thread Matt Zimmerman
I wouldn't consider podcasts to be music, and placing them in the Music
directory would result in unexpected behaviour, e.g. podcasts being
played when shuffling music.

If we aren't providing a default directory for them, how about asking
the user if it is OK to create the directory?

[Bug 197673] Re: gnome-display-properties should revert change automatically if not acknowledged

2008-04-02 Thread Miguel Martinez
Heh, I should have read this bug before spamming the ubuntu-x mailing
list.

Long story short: as acknowledged here, I managed to screw my only
monitor (my laptop screen) via gnome-display-properties. It was even
more serious, since I've just discovered that the offending file is
.gnome2/montiors.xml (I somehow expected this to be in .gconf/)

By the way, a reinstall might *not* solve the problem. If you have a
separate /home partition, and the user you create during the install is
the same (same name, uid and gid) you had before (very likely in a home
computer), you will still have the borked monitors.xml when you boot
after install.

Also on 8.04 (AMD64) beta with all package updates.
Running on a generic laptop with the Mitac 835H chipset.
