[Bug 209145] Re: Evince couldnot display chinese pdf files

2008-05-29 Thread undecidable

Same problem with kpdf 0.5.9 / poppler 0.6.4
in mixed pdfs. displays the english fine, but displays garbage for the chinese.

System is a clean install of Kubuntu 8.04

xpdf works fine.

kpdf 0.5.6 / poppler 0.5.4 on Kubuntu 7.04 worked fine.

Am filing here as I assume the problem is also poppler, and so should not open
a separate bug report.
If I should open a separate bug report, let me know.
If you want screenshots, let me know.
If you want tea and biscuits, let me know.

Have not tried poppler 0.8 - am not sure how.
Not confident I know how.

[Bug 36251] Re: Unreadable Font Size for GDM Login/Password

2008-05-29 Thread Dick Dunbar
I'm using a different theme, happygnome-list, but I tried the equivalent
of the fix suggested by Sun Wukong. My username and password entries
are now a good, readable size, but to accomplish this I had to set the
font size to 48! I believe that the original font size of 14 in the
.xml file is reasonable, and that something other than the font size
setting is causing this problem. In this theme, there are several other
boxes where the font is unreadably small, and I found no way to increase
their sizes. There are three boxes along the lower left side of the
screen, which I think from looking at the xml code are options,
session, and last language. They are almost legible, but not quite.
In addition, there are two boxes below the username/password entry box,
which I think are labeled OK and Cancel, again based on examining
the xml code. Furthermore, the username list on the upper left part of
the screen is also tiny. All the other text on the screen is readable
size, things like the enter password prompt, the caps lock is on
message and so forth. The items which are rendered unreadably small are
those of type button, list, and entry. I could find nothing in
the xml code that would affect the font size of the button or list
items, and the one thing that could be affected required a ridiculously
large font size value to be made readable.

I have changed this to Incomplete... please inform me of any

When I change smb.conf to use a different workgroup setting, it seems to

understand this is a fairly young project however, so I do not expect
full functionality.

[Bug 226330] Re: reduce unnecessary screen realestate use when Deskbar is stuck to panel

2008-05-29 Thread Dan Kortschak
Here is a cropped screenshot showing the menu/window up from the panel.
The large brown border to the text entry pane adds nothing. Further, I'd
have to say that having the actions above the text entry is counter
intuitive given how most actions based on text entry work (e.g. file
dialogue window), and it is the reverse of the situation in the previous
functional version (where deskbar just worked as a menu - ahhh, those
were the days; I find that I'm just not using these days.)

cheers

[Bug 209145] Re: Evince couldnot display chinese pdf files

2008-05-29 Thread undecidable

I have to eat my words and withdraw the comment above.

After re-reading Pedro Villavicencio comments above,
I re-checked what was installed and compared the 7.04 and 8.04 systems,
and discovered poppler-data was not on the 8.04 system.
So I installed it, and as if by miracle, Chinese appeared.

I should note that there was no poppler-data on the 7.04 system - and
the Chinese worked.

I should also note that how a humble user would know he/she must install
poppler-data to read Chinese remains unresolved.
Lucky there is launchpad to find this stuff out!

[Bug 235702] [NEW] open source usability - installing sshd

2008-05-29 Thread wolki
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-terminal

The program 'sshd' is currently not installed. You can install it by typing:
sudo apt-get install openssh-server
bash: sshd: command not found

The error message itself is good as it tells users how to recover from the
error.
From a usability point of view it is bad to tell people to do things the
computer could (should) do - hence the solution for all this would sound like
this:

The program 'sshd' is currently not installed. You can install it by typing:
sudo apt-get install openssh-server
anytime.
Would you like to run sudo apt-get install openssh-server now? (Y/n)

This might save about 33 key strokes in this case (vs. Y return which
are 2) - this is really a big gain in efficiency

Cheers
Peter

2008-05-29 Thread fabse
*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 212789 ***

I got the same behaviour here...

the line:
gvfs-fuse-daemon on /home/fabian/.gvfs type fuse.gvfs-fuse-daemon
(rw,nosuid,nodev,user=fabian)

was missing in my mtab

I added the line:

gvfs-fuse-daemon on /home/fabian/.gvfs type fuse.gvfs-fuse-daemon
(rw,nosuid,nodev,user=fabian)

to my fstab

I deleted ~/.gvfs/ and rebooted.

That fixed it for me...

[Bug 235427] Re: Crash detection dialog box is poorly worded

2008-05-29 Thread Peter Russell
Well if the dialog is really necessary, I would suggest something like
the following:

Evolution appears to have exited unexpectedly the last time it was run.
It is possible that the contents of one of your preview panes caused
this. Would you like to hide the preview panes this time? You can
restore the preview panes from the View menu.

Then the buttons could be labelled Hide previews and Don't hide
previews.

I think this is much clearer, but it does seem like a bit of an
unnecessary question. Ideally what would happen is that Evo would open
as usual, but the preview pane would show a message saying something
along the lines of This message is not being displayed because
Evolution exited unexpectedly the last time it was shown. With a
Click here to preview this message button. This would be much less
obtrusive, and in many cases the email being previewed is not the cause
of the problem.

[Bug 124440] Re: gnome needs a way to manipulate scroll speed

2008-05-29 Thread fyo
There are multiple issues here that make the Wishlist importance a
mistake, IMHO.

If you read the link for more information in the bug description, you'll
see that the problem isn't just adjusting wheel sensitivity... the very
real problem is that many wireless mice (all MS Wireless?) report
MULTIPLE EVENTS on each unit scroll if the system is ever booted into
Windows. The mouse should only report two events (one press, one
release), but instead reports multiple such.

That makes it *impossible* to scroll only one unit in any application
that does not have a scroll sensitivity *divisor*, which exactly ZERO
applications do that I'm aware of.

There are two possible solutions to this:

- Implement proper sensitivity adjustment accessible in Gnome.

or, better,

- Figure out what the hell is going on with the mouse/transceiver and
send commands to it to fix it.

This is essentially a driver issue and should be handled as such (option
2). That doesn't exclude ALSO implementing option 1, but option 1 is
properly set to Wishlist, whereas the real issue here is the faulty
driver for oddly-behaving wireless mice. It *appears* that booting into
Windows causes some sort of hardware level sensitivity to be changed,
resulting in multiple events per unit scroll.

The workaround is to unplug the transceiver (which appears to reset it
to the sane 1 press + 1 release per unit scroll), but one cannot expect
dual-booters to unplug their wireless transceiver every single time they
boot into Windows.

[Bug 106910] Re: Unable to mount Data DVD created under Windows XP or Vista that are in UDF format

2008-05-29 Thread dungeon
OK i sucessfuly mount CD-RW and DVD-RW (burned in Windows):

 sudo mount /dev/scd1 /media/cdrom1 -s -t udf -o
ro,user,noauto,exec,umask=0,session=0

that will mount just last session, if you want to mount whole disk then look
which is
the last block with:

 for DVD:

  dvd+rw-mediainfo /dev/dvd

(look for last track (number) in Track#AA)

 for CD:

  wodim dev='/dev/sr1' -toc

  (look in track:lout lba:)

That number than add to the end of mount options like this:

 sudo mount /dev/scd1 /media/cdrom1 -s -t udf -o
ro,user,noauto,exec,umask=0,session=0,lastblock=266636

 Hope i'm help someone:).

[Bug 174212] Re: Cannot save file to FTP server (from Save dialog)

2008-05-29 Thread alfred_nutile
Same flow here in Hardy.
1. use nautilus to connect to ftp server.
a. can drag files there
b. can edit (gedit) files there etc.
2. Open openoffice to create a file and save from within the dialog box ie Save
As--Point to the Folder/Mount in Nautilus and then all just freezes in
OpenOffice come back 5 minutes later still frozen.
This happens on both anonymous and user/password.

The goal would be to let the end user save right to the ftp drive.
I can do this by mounting the drive ahead of time via curlftp but of course
Nautilus via Open Office would be best.
Thanks
