[Bug 216197] Re: no weather information in gnome panel

2008-06-12 Thread harold
Tristan: yes, I set the computer's timezone also to Europe/Amsterdam.

I got things working though. I use wicd on this computer in stead of
networkmanager (problems with an atheros adapter in NM). I was using the
wired connection, which was not the default connection. Because of this,
after log in, there was no internet connection until I selected the
wired interface. After changing the wired connection to default, the
weather information shows up automatically after reboot.

[Bug 220957] Re: Fails to see blank CD/DVDs for writing

2008-06-12 Thread Martin Pitt
tanager: you have a different problem then; the DVD you inserted wasn't
blank, it already had an UDF file system. The problem seems to be that
it cannot be read properly (all the I/O errors), which might indicate a
hardware problem (cabling), or more likely a linux kernel bug if it
works fine under Windows.

[Bug 73358] Re: dhcp -- static ip doesn't change when changing location

2008-06-12 Thread Stijn Gysemans
As i filed this bug in bugzilla, I also got this issue.
http://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=537924

Please describe the problem:
When changing location, with location A set to static ip, location B to dhcp,
it does not automatically retrieve a new ip address for location B.
You need to manually run sudo /etc/init.d/networking restart

Steps to reproduce:
1. Go to NM applet
2. Set current settings to static ip
3. press the save current configruation as a location, name it 'config A'
4. Set current settings to a dhcp ip
5. press the save current configruation as a location, name it 'config B'
6. select location 'config A' from the list
7. select 'apply configuration as current location'
8. press close
9. check that your ip is set to the static ip you've setup. This will be the
case
10. Go to NM applet
11. Select 'config B' as a location
12. select 'apply configuration as current location'
13. click close

Actual results:
you'll see that your router does NOT automatically give you a new ip. The
command sudo /etc/init.d/networking restart must be run

Expected results:
The program should automatically run the command 14. The command sudo
/etc/init.d/networking restart

Does this happen every time?
Yes

[Bug 237841] Re: Cannot listen to streaming content. KFIam640.com

2008-06-12 Thread gamesmedic
I have determined that the problem lies with javascript. Most streaming radio
stations use either Flash Player, javascript player(s), or .pls formats.
All of the radio stations that stream Coast to Coast AM use some sort of
javascript player. Probably the same one that Paltalk uses. After searching for
days on end I found that KFI also streams a classic javascript player that
worked for me tonight.
The web address is:
http://www.kfi640.com/cc-common/streaming_new/index.html?refreshed=yes
So if anyone with Ubuntu wants to listen to Coast To Coast AM, that link above
will let you.

[Bug 229987] Re: Evince freezes on loading page with large PDF file.

2008-06-12 Thread Sonic275
Same bug for me.

Since upgrading to Hardy, opening PDF documents in maximized evince freezes on
the loading page until the window is unmaximized.
The last status of the window is saved, so closing evince with unmaximized
window means it will reopen unmaximized as well, and everythings works
correctly. Bug closing evince with maximized window means it will reopen
maximized and freeze on the loading page.

Using evince 2.22.2 on last up-to-date ubuntu hardy.

[Bug 239399] [NEW] Rhythmbox error to launch plugins Jamendo and Magnatune store

There doesn't seem to be any way to disable the plugins from launching

error in launching the plugin. I don't want these plugin things and
can't make it go away.

[Bug 239413] [NEW] Four steps of brightness changing after pressing a brightness key only once

2008-06-12 Thread Sympy
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-power-manager

As recommended by Andreas Wenning in Bug #207473, I'm opening a new bug
report. Although there's several similar bugs already reported, I didn't
find one I could really consider a duplicate.

My laptop is Dell Vostro 1400 with a GeForce 8400M GS and I'm using
Hardy. When I press one of the brightness controls keys (Fn + Up or Fn +
Down), four steps of brightness changing happen instead of just one.
There seems to be a consensus in Bug #207473 that the problem lies on
both hal and the desktop manager software responsible for power
management. They both try to adjust the brightness and they both do two
steps instead of one. A fix for kde-guidance, which supposedbly reduces
the number of steps to two (in other words, fixes the problem on kde
side but not on the hal side, which is still being worked on) is already
available in hardy-proposed.

An example of what lshal -m reports when I press Fn + Up only once:

06:53:28.008: computer_logicaldev_input_1 condition ButtonPressed =
brightness-up
06:53:28.010: computer_logicaldev_input condition ButtonPressed = brightness-up
06:53:28.011: platform_i8042_i8042_KBD_port_logicaldev_input condition
ButtonPressed = brightness-up
06:53:28.200: platform_i8042_i8042_KBD_port_logicaldev_input condition
ButtonPressed = brightness-up

[Bug 239413] Re: Four steps of brightness changing after pressing a brightness key only once

2008-06-12 Thread Sympy
Some other observations:

1) Executing /etc/acpi/video_brightnessdown.sh or
/etc/acpi/video_brightnessup.sh changes the brightness just one step,
but tweaking those scripts, or even deleting them, has no effect in the
bug. It seems they are not called at all when the Fn keys are pressed, I
don't know if this is expected behavior.

2) Blacklisting the video module fixes the four-step behavior, but
causes other problems. A brightness change pop-up does not appear
anymore, the brightness applet loses sync with the current brightness
and trying to change brightness through the applet causes a two-second
hanging for each step.

3) hal and gnome-power manager also seem to be conflicting in automatic
brightness adjustment. A quick flicker when I unplug the ac cable
indicates that the brightness was adjusted twice.

[Bug 239420] [NEW] eog initial size on triple head configuration

2008-06-12 Thread sseitz
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: eog

eog obviously starts up with about 80% of screen width. If the screen is e.g.
3840 x 1024, eog starts with 2880x2065+480+46 which is really annoying as one
has to move and resize the window (not necessarily the shown image) a few times
to completely fit into the visible screen.
I propose two solutions:
a) keep last window position in mind an re-use it on startup
b) calculate on base of the screen height, not the screen width

[Bug 216104] Re: Hardy - Nautilus shortcut to Samba Share reports wrong password, double icons

2008-06-12 Thread Michael Lueck
BrianDrab, I think DrC was referring to Ubuntu support rather than
Ubuntu users when they said I will note that no Ubuntu folks have made
a peep about this report.

I did not know that Gnome VFS to GVFS twist. I suppose that is the
reason for other nonsense I see going on. (Mount a Samba share to a
mount point on the local file system, Browse it with Nautilus, double
click a file and up comes a box asking you to authenticate again! Reason
being something decides to launch the app with smb:// instead of
file://).

I tried to log this nonsense during the beta. I recall one response I
received was I do not have Samba in my recreate / test environment.
And that is MY problem HOW?!?!? Annoying!

[Bug 228196] [NEW] gdm and keyboard layout switch

2008-06-12 Thread Launchpad Bug Tracker
You have been subscribed to a public bug:

first of all: what's the problem?:
i upgraded from ubuntu 7.10 to 8.04. i use 2 keyboard layouts (not in
xorg.conf, that one just said: layout be and level3 right alt to switch): be
and us
after upgrading, it didn't switch anymore, i just got weird chars (the switch
seemed to switch to level3 for the entire keyboard). after playing with it (A
LOT), i thougt: reinstall (and use xubuntu, since i only have 256MB of ram in
the machine)
same problem there, BUT i found out WHERE the problem resides:
* install a ubuntu/xubuntu machine
* create multiple keyboard layouts in xorg.conf like:
Option XkbLayout be,us(euro)
or don't use the xorg way, but do it in the settings panel in gnome/xfce (like
the first time i encountered the problem).
* all works fine... now lets break it!
* in your login settings window: enable autologin of a specific user
* reboot and watch how your keyboard switching applet messes up completely

i don't know exactly how that changes stuff, but i do know it took me a
LONG time to find this one... can anyone tell me how/why this could
happen? and where do i look to fix this? (this problem wasn't there in
7.10 and prior). this is a bitch to find, and hell to understand! ;)

if any info is needed: just yell ;)

Re: [Bug 237130] Re: Swahili support broken

2008-06-12 Thread Mogens Dybæk Christensen
Hi

This is exactly what I experienced, except I have english and danish. It
is Ubuntu 8.04.

I have passed the computer to the person who will carry it to Tanzania,
so I don't have access to it. But I hope a fix for the swahili package
will appear. Then I can get someone to update the computer.

Daniel [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote:
Hi there. I too am having a problem with this. I emailed that
person, but is there anything else we can do?
I am running the current, most up-to-date version of Ubuntu.
I installed German and Swahili via System-Administration-Language
 Support.
In the terminal, I typed: sudo dpkg-reconfigure locales and only
German and English locales were found.
Upon logging out, at the login screen I click on Options, switch
language, and only English and German variants are present.
Please let me know if there's anything else I can do.

[Bug 199245] Re: gnome-settings-daemon crash opening any window: BadWindow X error under Xvnc

2008-06-12 Thread Timo Jyrinki
Ok. On current hardy, the problem seems to be even more about the gnome-
settings-daemon's mouse plugin than keyboard plugin. Unsetting apps -
gnome_settings_daemon - plugins - mouse - active gives me themed VNC
session already, but it gnome-settings-daemon crashes often when doing
anything with the end result of it being disabled quite soonish.
Unsetting keyboard - active alone does not help at all, but unsetting
also it in addition to mouse - active seems to give me a stable, themed
VNC session.

Tried http://gentoo-wiki.com/Talk:HOWTO_RealVNC,_TightVNC,_XF4VNC,
http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=122402page=43, and then some,
but most information seems outddated. The only change needed really for
gnome-session in .vnc/xstartup to work were disabling those mouse and
keyboard gnome-settings-daemon plugins.

[Bug 239438] [NEW] Nautilus cannot display multiple python scripted columns

2008-06-12 Thread kbit
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: nautilus

In the course of bug #228987, I tried to add python scripted columns to
nautilus. (Displaying different EXIF data)

Adding several columns does not work. The second one overwrites the
first one when adding itself.

None of the columns is shown when their tickmark is ticked.
If one of the tickmarks is ticked then, after closing and reopening the columns
window, suddenly both are ticked.

I'll attach the scripts below to make sure there's no bug in the
scripts.

[Bug 220957] Re: Fails to see blank CD/DVDs for writing

2008-06-12 Thread tanager
Hm...Martin, this is a laptop. No cabling problems. I think I may have
had a CD in there instead of a DVD; both were brand new, blank media.
I can put in a DVD I've burned or a commercial movie, any CD I've put
anything on or a mass-produced music CD - and all is fine. It's the new,
blank media that won't work.

This drive not only worked fine under Windows, it worked fine under
Gutsy! At least as far as reading blank CD-ROMS and burning whatever I
wanted to them. I had not tried to burn or read DVDs yet.

Here's a thing: I ran dmesg | tail with a CD I'd put artwork on in the
drive. Still got the same I/O errors, just lost the UDF-fs errors. Yet
the CD is reading beautifully.

After the CD, I put the blank CD and the same DVD from before in and
got:

[EMAIL PROTECTED]:~$ dmesg | tail
[212982.279995] end_request: I/O error, dev sr0, sector 324
[212982.397254] end_request: I/O error, dev sr0, sector 320

[212983.239757] end_request: I/O error, dev sr0, sector 344

Note the lack of UDF-fs again? But those errors were there the first
time I ran the command on this same blank media!

Anything else I should try?

[Bug 239437] [NEW] Nautilus slows to a crawl when opening a folder with images and zoom level is 100%

2008-06-12 Thread Øyvind Stegard
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: nautilus

If I open a folder in Nautilus containing, say, 60 images and the zoom
level is 150% or more (icon view), it immediately becomes slow,
unresponsive and consumes 100% CPU for a long time *after* all the
images are displayed. It does not matter if thumbnails need to be
generated or not (i.e. if they are pre-cached or not). Nautilus does not
crash, scrolling is possible, but is extremely jerky and quite unusable.
If I leave it for a while, or leave the folder entirely, CPU consumption
goes back to normal, and everything seems fine. When the zoom-level is
100% or less, the problem does not occur.

Ubuntu Hardy 8.04 with proposed updates enabled.
nautilus 1:2.22.3-0ubuntu2

Here's the top of an oprofile system report where profiling was started
right before loading an image folder in Nautilus (where all thumbnails
have already been generated and cached before), and stopped when
Nautilus CPU usage eventually goes down to normal. No other significant
things were using much CPU during profiling.

Seems like a lot of time is spent in libjpeg, even though all images
have already been loaded ! This gives a very poor user experience.
Perhaps new thumbnails are being generated behind the scenes, even
though it already displays the cached versions ?

[Bug 228196] Re: gdm and keyboard layout switch

2008-06-12 Thread TomasHnyk
Oh, and from the other bug report - there is a workaround. Run setxkbmap -print
| xkbcomp - $DISPLAY and everything works as it should.
This does not work when I put it in session startup for some reason:-/. (i.e.
it must be run manually)

[Bug 211604] Re: trash icon disappears in panel

2008-06-12 Thread carrasclin
I've experienced the same issue and also Alexander Jones' fix works for
me too.

A workaround based on savagex post wrote on 2008-06-05 consisits on
openning SystemPreferencesSessions and on Startup Programs tab add
an entry like Name: Trash applet starter; Command: /usr/lib/gnome-
applets/trashapplet. Now without Alex's fix also the trash bin applet
becomes visible after next session login.

[Bug 237581] Re: no desktop icons on cold start when iPod connected

2008-06-12 Thread Sebastien Bacher
you can try to send the bug directly to bugzilla.gnome.org too but the
issue is that thousand of bugs are open and only limited ressources to
work on those

is nautilus working when you get the issue?
