Not exactly helpful for the bug report, but a hint at Erik: I have found quite a few traps in Ubuntu Software where it is assumed that the root user has access to the user's home directory, which is not the case in such an environment. Examples include usb-creator (fixed by now), pam_mount and others. This is a side effect of the Ubuntu way of allowing normal users to do administrative tasks via sudo. As noted in bug report #622344 ( https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/evince/+bug/622344 ), a fix for a bug that was crashing evince was implemented in evince package 2.31.90-0ubuntu2. I had reproduced this bug several times prior to that package release. It would happen every time I tried to fill in the second field. After upgrading to the newest version of evince with the fix, I have not encountered the bug and can not reproduce it. a simpler/cleaner (?) way would be to add a script in /etc/X11/Xsession.d/, those are run as the user so no sudo'ing is necessary (and I used /tmp, for keeping the namespace cleaner). UPDATE to my last comment: I took another look at the problem (Lucid, Seahorse 2.30 on VBox) and it turns out that the dialog is not hanging. On my machine it takes between 5-20mins for the key to be generated the dialog then closes properly. The cancel button on the dialog does not work and closing the dialog via the x lets the key be generated in the background that is why it pops up eventually. If it crashes when trying to share that probably means Vino was not running previoulsy (according to the trace, it crashes when trying to register the TP client which is done when starting Vino). Could you try to start Vino manually first and see if that helps? I can confirm that manually editing the x and y values in ~/.config/monitors.xml and then logging out and back in again adjusts the monitor position.
