2021-01-19 Thread Glenn Stewart
Wayland versions done. Again, the edids.bin would not attach as it was
empty.

I have already made various changes to the display under Wayland. All
successful, although only in top half of the screen.

Glenn Stewart

Re: [Bug 1906086] Re: DIsplay is limited to top half of the screen

2021-01-19 Thread Glenn Stewart
Thanks Daniel.

BIOS Update was done under Windows/HP Tools before I installed Ubuntu.

xrandrv.txt is attached. edids.bin would not attach, as it was empty.

I tried various display settings, which all worked, but within the top half
of the screen.

Regards,
Glenn Stewart

Re: [Bug 1906086] Re: DIsplay is limited to top half of the screen

2020-12-02 Thread Glenn Stewart
Hi Daniel.
I do not have a login screen, so I do not have a password nor do I see any
of the options you have mentioned. See the attached screenshots.
Screenshot 1 shows the options I have. I usually go with 'try Ubuntu' or I
exit installation completely.
Screenshot 2 shows the desktop and the apps option, which is the only extra
thing I can do.

Re: [Bug 1906086] Re: DIsplay is limited to top half of the screen

2020-12-01 Thread Glenn Stewart
Hi Daniel.

Here is the screenshot of the start up options. There is no 'Ubuntu on
Wayland' option available to me at start up.
I have tried each option, without success at this point.
Windows is still affected. Hard to show as the bottom half "haze" is very
light today.

I have rebooted with the straight Ubuntu option rather than the Safe Graphics
option.

They all make the changes but still only within the top half of the screen.

Under settings/resolution there is only one option - 1024 x 768 (4:3)

The machine is an HP AIO,Processor = Intel® Core™ i7-6700 CPU @ 3.40GHz

2020-11-29 Thread Glenn Stewart
Thanks Daniel.
I rebooted and used Ubuntu (safe graphics), and all was well.
The resolution only has one option - 1024 x 768.
So problem solved - thank you for your prompt response.

[Bug 1906086] Re: DIsplay is limited to top half of the screen

2020-11-29 Thread Glenn Stewart
Thanks Daniel.
Screenshot attached.
I am back in Win10 right now, which also became affected by the "hazy bottom
half" of the display, although the full screen displayed behind the haze (just
hard to read).

Will need to try booting again from the stick, to see the option for
Wayland.

Cheers
Glenn

[Bug 1872159] Re: Boot animation never finishes when external monitors (or just more than one) are connected

2020-10-10 Thread Glenn Brauen
Ubuntu 20.04 on Lenovo T480s. This problem has appeared only in the last
week. I've been running 20.04 since May and had never seen this problem
before.

Boot hangs on Ubuntu spinning splash with HDMI directly connected for
2nd monitor. Booting without HDMI connected works fine.

- removing "splash quiet" in /etc/grub/default does NOT avoid problem.
- changing /etc/gdm3/custom.conf as in #31 above does NOT avoid the problem.

- switching from gdm3 to either sddm or lightdm avoids the problem.

Re: [Bug 1740921] Re: Nautilus renames partitions on external USB HDD

2019-01-30 Thread Glenn Brumfield
Thank you for your attention to this bug report. It had been so long since
I submitted the report that I upgraded to Lubuntu 18.04.1 in the interim.
Since Lubuntu uses File Manager PCManFS rather than Nautilus, [CODE] gvfs
-li [/CODE] will only return [CODE] gvfs: command not found [/CODE]. Since
this is a production machine, I can't reinstall Ubuntu 16.04 with Unity
just for troubleshooting at this late date. PCManFS has not renamed any of
my external HDD file partitions in 18.04.1; perhaps this was an aberration
caused by the last updates to the end-of-life-for-Unity-based 16.04 OS.
Thank you again for your time.

[Bug 1774632] [NEW] The symbolic link /etc/resolv.conf points to the wrong file by default

2018-06-01 Thread Glenn J. Schworak
Public bug reported:

When using nslookup for local machine names, the local DNS was being
ignored (not queried) and none of the local machines could be found.

After much research and digging, it was discovered that the cause was
the incorrect symbolic link /etc/resolv.conf file.

The default install caused systemd-resolve to configure the link to point to
the stub file:
/etc/resolv.conf -> ../run/systemd/resolve/stub-resolv.conf

Reomving that link and pointing it to the correct file solved the DNS lookup
issue. The correct link looks like this:
/etc/resolv.conf -> /run/systemd/resolve/resolv.conf

Steps used to test the bug before fixing the link is to perform an nslookup on
a local (non FQDN) machine that is in your local DNS (my router is my DNS
server for this case) Here is an example of the incorrect output:

$ nslookup web1

Server: 127.0.0.53
Address:127.0.0.53#53

** server can't find web1: SERVFAIL

Switching the symbolic link solves the problem. Here is my solution:

$ sudo rm -f /etc/resolv.conf
$ sudo ln -s /run/systemd/resolve/resolv.conf /etc/resolv.conf

After switching the symbolic link, the nslookup functions properly.

$ nslookup web1

[Bug 1740921] [NEW] Nautilus renames partitions on external USB HDD

2018-01-02 Thread Glenn Brumfield
Public bug reported:

Nautilus adds the number "1" to the partition names on my external
backup USB HDD (e.g., EXT4 = EXT41, JFS = JFS1, NTFS = NTFS1). This
seems to have occurred since the last set of updates. I speculate that
this may or may not have something to do with the recent 'Backups'
(Deja-Dup) update within the last week, but I don't know how to verify
this. I have verified the correct partition names using GParted from a
Live-DVD of Ubuntu 16.04.3; the correct names do not have the appended
"1" added to the partition name(s) on the external USB drive. Names
appear to be correct for the internal HDD for my PC. I have attached a
screenshot of Nautilus with the affected partitions displayed. I am

[Bug 1710897] Re: emacs25-x crashed with SIGABRT in raise()

2017-08-27 Thread Glenn Morris
"Connection lost to X server", so this sounds like the following entry
from Emacs's etc/PROBLEMS:

** When Emacs is compiled with Gtk+, closing a display kills Emacs.

There is a long-standing bug in GTK that prevents it from recovering
from disconnects: http://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=85715.

Thus, for instance, when Emacs is run as a server on a text terminal,
and an X frame is created, and the X server for that frame crashes or
exits unexpectedly, Emacs must exit to prevent a GTK error that would
result in an endless loop.

If you need Emacs to be able to recover from closing displays, compile
it with the Lucid toolkit instead of GTK.

[Bug 1712731] Re: xdg-open(gvfs-open) doesnot work from emacs

2017-08-27 Thread Glenn Morris
See eg https://debbugs.gnu.org/cgi/bugreport.cgi?bug=25234#8

xdg-open can delegate to a variety of different helpers depending on your
environment.
If the one it ends up calling returns immediately rather than waiting, Emacs
thinks the associated process is done.

[Bug 1564992] Re: gnome-software crashed with SIGSEGV in do_lookup.isra()

2016-04-08 Thread Glenn
Found the following CLI commands on an Internet blog with a similar
issue. The missing menus are restored and they survive rebooting.
However, make certain that any unsaved data in open desktop applications
(Libreoffice, gedit, etc.) are saved prior to executing as this process
can close active applications running without warning.:

 dconf reset -f /org/compiz
 setsid unity

After three reboots, all seems to be functioning normally just as it was
prior to receiving the Software Updater updates that corrupted the menu
settings.

Just think, in 4 more months Ubuntu 14.04 will be EOL and this will
still be an open bug! So much for the much-vaunted LTS releases...

[Bug 1416730] [NEW] Brasero incorrectly detects blank-cd capacity

2015-01-31 Thread Glenn Brumfield
Public bug reported:

Using the GUI, when attempting to burn an audio cd, Brasero detects a
Memorex 700MB blank-cd as an 800MB blank-cd. Brasero allows 700MB audio
files to be assigned to a burning job for that blank-cd, simulates,
burns and reports a successful burn. When cd is ejected then reinserted,
Nautilus is unable to read any file properties for the resulting audio
cd and hangs when requested to do so. At this point, Nautilus hangs
Ubuntu if Nautilus is force-closed. This results in being unable to
eject the cd or shutdown Ubuntu from the menu. This requires a Ctl-Alt-
PrtSc+REISUB to reboot the hung system.

i expect Brasero to correctly report blank-cd size and prevent too many
files from being added to a blank-cd. Failing that capability, I expect
Brasero to report cumulative size of selected files for burning so that
I may manually avoid adding too many files for blank-cd capacity.

[Bug 1283003] Re: [Bluetooth + 14.04] Bluetooth headsets are not working after last couple of updates

2014-12-10 Thread Glenn Brumfield
As a comparison, Lubuntu 14.04 using Blueman and ath9k is able to pair,
connect and stream audio using A2DP. On a diferrent notebook, Ubuntu
14.04 using the default bluetooth application (is it gnome-bluetooth now
or bluez?) and iwlwifi only occasionally pairs with the same headset and
never streams audio. With Blueman installed, it still does not want to
connect and stream audio using Blueman instead.of the default.

Perhaps a knowledgeable comparison between the two (Ubuntu vs Lubuntu)
would be enlightening?

[Bug 1048167] Re: brasero does not eject disk after burning

2012-11-15 Thread Glenn Brumfield
+1 - System76 ServalPro7 running Ubuntu 12.04 64-bit. Brasero fails to
eject CD's DVD's after burning, but the file manager other
applications are able to eject media without having to use the manual
eject button. This seems to be a long-running bug in Brasero.

[Bug 1029285] [NEW] Disappearing options from burn menu

2012-07-26 Thread Rob Glenn
Public bug reported:

In some situations, the burn options (use burnproof, leave session
open, etc.) are inexplicably missing from the burn menu. When this
happens, it cannot be fixed by restarting the application, logging out,
rebooting the machine, or doing an uninstall/complete removal/reinstall
of the application. One situation in which this seems to reliably occur
is when using DVD+RW media. However, I've also seen it other times as
well. I have 3 different machines and I've seen it on all 3 at various
times. Debug output from 'brasero -g' attached as brasero-debug.txt.

K3b apparently closes the DVD even when start multisession was

little bit disappointing as multisession CD-RW worked OK (what's the
difference between multisession on a DVD and a CD-RW?) This in up-to-

[Bug 943936] [NEW] Save As File Window Size is Too Big Vertically

2012-03-01 Thread Glenn Moloney
Public bug reported:

When selecting the save as file option within an application such as
Libre Office Writer or downloading a file using Firefox, the save as
file window size is too big vertically. Because of this you can't select
the save or cancel buttons as there off the screen. The only way I can
access the buttons is to use the Super key + S key, trag the window up,
press Super key + S key again to return then I have access to either
the save or cancel buttons. The netbook I'm using is a Toshiba NB200
which has a screen resolution of 1024 x 600.

As you can imagine this can be quite annoying. I've attached a video of

[Bug 629646] Re: Locations using bom.gov.au for forecast data no longer can no longer retrieve forecast data

Just tested the new package for Lucid the Melbourne forecast is now
correctly displayed (Had remove reinstall applet for forecast to be

Moving forward my only wish is for Ubuntu 12.04 LTS with Unity to have
the option of installing this applet as the weather forecast is far more
informative than what's currently available with Unity.

[Bug 463930] Re: Hardy - blank cd does not show on desktop

2011-05-19 Thread Glenn Brumfield
Thank you for following up on this. I reported this bug because it
affected Hardy Heron (Ubuntu 8.04LTS) after about 8.04.2. According to
the release notes for Intrepid Ibex (Ubuntu 8.10), the version(s) of
xorg following Hardy did not (and still do not) support legacy NVidia
video cards using the 96 71 drivers. The nv driver is used instead
which does not correctly support my video card; I am forced to use the
NVidia proprietary driver. This issue has been deemed not worth fixing
by the powers that be for all currently supported Ubuntu versions.

I am currently using Lucid Lynx (Ubuntu 10.04LTS) installed to my hard
drive. USB flash drives, blank cd's all appear correctly on my desktop.
I still have to use the proprietary driver for my video card, otherwise
the pointer on my desktop is scrambled.

Running Natty Narwhal (Ubuntu 11.04) from Live-Cd Live-USB, USB flash
drives blank-cds seem to show up correctly on my desktop; of course I
still have the video-driver issue from Live Media but that is a separate
issue.

I understand that priorities must be established to fix bugs and as
Hardy is no longer supported I see no reason to keep this bug open.

Thank you for your time!

Just confirming. After recompiling the libgweather source with the patch
(weather-bom.c.patch), installed the deb package then moving the lib
files to the correct directory (From /usr/local/lib to /usr/lib), this
resolves the issue :). It's just a shame that a fix (patch) was created
back in September why does it take so long to upstream it?? Most new
user to Ubuntu would have difficulty in installing it.

2010-10-26 Thread Glenn Coombs
Has anything been added to the new Power Manager version with respect to
this bug ?

I have only installed Maverick inside VirtualBox so far but I didn't see
any additional options inside the Power Manager application to
enable/disable wakeup using the keyboard and/or mouse. I guess it is
possible that they aren't visible when running inside a VM as opposed to
running on real hardware.

I plan to do a proper install this weekend and will recheck and confirm,
but at the moment I'm not seeing any change in this bug.

Thanks in advance if anyone can help. Cheers.

[Bug 294182] Re: GNOME's Help Slow to Load

2010-08-27 Thread Anthony Glenn
Thanks to Shaun McCance for comment #12. I see what the trouble is. Yelp
is setting itself up to display its full glorious range of capabilities
before it starts drawing to the screen. Hence the long delay with
nothing happening on screen. Make it draw its window, menu bar and the
content of the help file as the first thing it does. Defer other
processing until after the window and content are there on screen. Do
the minimum possible amount of processing before starting to draw. Most
users just want to see their help content as soon as possible, then do a
bit of scrolling, go to the next page and that is about it. Make the
common things fast and on the critical path. Defer processing for the
uncommon things.

It is quite possible the user may never use some advanced features, such
as search. It is wasteful to go to the trouble of setting something up,
then throw away all that work when Yelp quits. Do not set advanced
features up at all, until the user first asks to use them. On the
subject of advanced features to defer or cut, I never use bookmarks, man
and info pages or text search. Help Topics is used rarely.

I agree that it is a pain that GTK+ 3 is different from GTK+ 2. Further,
I agree that GTK+ 3 gets used for new development. However, is it not
the case that GTK+ 3 is a superset of GTK+ 2? So it should not be too
difficult to use only GTK+ 2 for common actions, with advanced features
which use GTK+ 3, simply left out. That would give a cut-down version of
Yelp suitable for Lucid and Maverick. Fix this bug, at the cost of some
features regressions. That would be a better option for most users than
sticking with the present buggy version of Yelp. Yes, a few might be
unhappy. Give those people instructions on how to go back to Yelp
2.30.0. I look forward to the next contribution by Shaun McCance.

[Bug 294182] Re: GNOME's Help Slow to Load

2010-08-26 Thread Anthony Glenn
Lucid still seems to have Yelp 2.30.0 (with the bug), as of today. If
this bug is fixed in Yelp 2.31.1 then why not push that out as an
update?

I was showing Ubuntu to someone who had never heard of Linux, the other
day. And they wanted to know, What is this Ubuntu thing? So I did
System About Ubuntu. Well, how to make a bad first impression in one
easy lesson, without even trying. This miserable Yelp thing took around
40 seconds to load, with nothing happening on screen until the last
second or so. It is appalling ergonomics. I had to apologize, Gee, I
can't understand why this is taking so long -- it is taking even longer
to start than Firefox. Sorry about that.

This long delay in Yelp starting is just not acceptable. Restarts are OK
at around 2 seconds, but that first start is bad bad. Frankly, Yelp
should be a tiny fraction of the size of Firefox and it should be
reading relatively tiny data files. I expect under 1 second starts every
time.

I want (1) Yelp really fixed, (2) this bug raised in importance. Other
people are reporting having to wait over a minute. When you are looking
for help, you are not sure what you are doing. To have the help system
itself malfunctioning, that gives a very bad impression.

[Bug 606756] [NEW] GUI setting needed to disable or enable wake from suspend via mouse (or keyboard)

2010-07-17 Thread Glenn Coombs
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-power-manager

When I suspend my computer I want to be able to wake it up again by
pressing a key on the keyboard. By default this isn't possible. Having
added the following line to my /etc/rc.local script:

echo UHC1 /proc/acpi/wakeup

I can successfully wake the machine up using the keyboard.
Unfortunately the above line enables any USB device to perform the
wakeup, including the mouse. This is a problem because the mouse seems
to be hypersensitive and often wakes the machine up immediately after
suspending it (just walking by the desk is enough to trigger it).

To disable the mouse from waking the computer up I figured out that I
need to run the following command:

echo disabled
/sys/devices/pci:00/:00:1d.0/usb2/2-1/2-1.4/power/wakeup

So, problem solved for me. Until I plug the mouse into a different USB
port and the file I need above changes :-(

But this sort of hacking is pretty user hostile, especially when it is
so easy to do under Windows - just go to the Power Management tab of the
appropriate device and tick or untick the Enable this device to wakeup
the computer checkbox.

The gnome-power-manager should have something similar so that there is a
GUI available where ordinary users can enable or disable the required
functionality. They should be able to enable or disable both the
keyboard and mouse separately. If either of them are enabled then the
appropriate line should be written to the /proc/acpi/wakeup file
automatically (and persist over a reboot). Ditto for writing to the
power/wakeup file.

It would also be nice to add any other devices capable of waking the
machine up like the ethernet or wifi interfaces.

[Bug 585750] [NEW] Refresh closes any expanded folders

2010-05-26 Thread Glenn Jenkins
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: nautilus

If you expand folders in the RH pane to look at files in multiple
folders at the same time, etc, and then click the refresh button (or
press F5), the folders all collapse and you have just a single folder
visible.

This is very annoying because I can't always remember which folders I
had expanded, and it's a lot of effort to re-expand them.

I am using Nautilus 2.30.1 on Ubuntu 10.04 (Lucid Lynx)

up in PlacesBlank CD-R Disk. I am able to select an iso image from my
Download folder, right-click on it, and burn the iso to the CD.

If I select PlacesBlank CD-R Disk, I get an error message: Could not open
location 'burn:///' The default action does not support this protocol.

This has not been a problem in the past, but I don't burn a lot of CDs.

[Bug 458334] Re: Fails repeatably with DBus error org.gtk.Private.RemoteVolumeMonitor.NotFound: The given volume was not found

2010-02-02 Thread Glenn
Another tip, if you have a CD-ROM in the drive, it shows up in the list
and there is a bug calculating the usb drive size needed. I had a DVD
that was bigger than the size of my USB stick, and even though I
selected a small ISO image to put on the thumb drive, it was using the
DVD's size to do the calculation. I removed the DVD, and then restarted
the program and selected the ISO again, and it worked.

[Bug 461088] Re: sound comes and goes---boots up without it much of the time

2009-11-13 Thread Glenn Brumfield
Fixed for me in Ubuntu 9.10 final.

I noticed in 9.10 beta that the volume control by default seemed to be
set to minimum volume level; if you're having problems with sound be
sure to recheck your volume because an update may have changed it.

[Bug 463930] Re: Hardy - blank cd does not show on desktop

2009-10-30 Thread Glenn Brumfield
Additional information: When I plug in a USB flash drive, it does not
appear on the 8.04 desktop, but does show up in Places2.0 GB Media. I
can access the files on the flash drive.

You mentioned to be tested on karmic. Since I have VirtualBox installed, I
tried out (as a guest) Ubuntu 9.10 beta upgraded to 9.10 final with updates as
of 29 Oct. The USB flash drive shows up in the lower right taskbar for
VirtualBox, but not on the 9.10 desktop or in Places. In Karmic's Terminal, I
tried lsusb and found the flash drive, but it still wouldn't mount.

To make sure this wasn't a VBox problem, I tried out 8.04 and 9.04 as
guests in VBox. The flash drive showed up on the desktop and in
Places2.0 GB Media in both (guest) Hardy and (guest) Intrepid; I could
access the files on the flash drive in both.

Out of curiousity, I tried to mount a CD of mp3 music files in (guest)
9.10. The CD showed up on the desktop and in Places. The mp3 music
files played well (once I had the plug-in for Rhythmbox installed).

I am running Ubuntu 8.04.3 (host), VirtualBox 3.0.8, and the guest OS's
mentioned above.

[Bug 463930] Re: Hardy - blank cd does not show on desktop

2009-10-30 Thread Glenn Brumfield
Additional information: Searching the Ubuntu Forums, I found a thread by
jrrader [SOLVED] USB and blank CD - no automount in 9.10. In it, he
solved his issue by installing gnome-mount and gnome-volume-manager
which were not in his 9.10 install.

Gnome-mount and gnome-volume-manager are not in my 9.10 install.

I know we made a lot of changes to 9.10; does 9.10 need gnome-mount and
gnome-volume-manager?

[Bug 422286] [NEW] evolution intermittently looses connection with exchange server

2009-08-31 Thread Glenn Hamblin
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: evolution

Package is evolution-exchange (as best as I can figure) version of evolution is
2.26.1
Ubuntu 9.04- the Jaunty Jackalope

For months it has been a relatively rare occurence. However for the last 2
weeks it has been unbearable. I start evolution, it refreshes the folders gets
the new mail, and then sometimes when I try to open a message I'll get the
error Unable to retrieve message
Lost connection to Evolution Exchange backend process. Once this happens, a
close and restart of evolution is required before another attempt to read a
message can be carried out. I can connect to exchange via the web interface,
and I can connect via LookOut (MS-Outlook) running in a virtual environment on
the same machine. I really don't know what changed, but it is very frustrating.

While it is less important to me, the calendar connection to exchange
rarely works at all anymore.

Re: [Bug 368227] Re: calandar in Evolution freezes the moment I click on other evolution programs work ater force quit but not calandar

2009-04-27 Thread Glenn Louttit
Found a fix by going to Places on the desktop Home folder, clicking
on show hidden files, click on '.evolution' ; calendar; local; system;
calendar.ics; and then delete last entry that caused crash from and
including BEGIN:VEVENT down to END:VEVENT. then saved file and closed.
Reopened evolution calendars and everything worked again. (Thank God)
The original crash happened when I tried to adjust a recurring event and
apply changes to all events. this is when it froze.

the way to get a stacktrace is either to use apport or gdb this way
- start evolution on the email component
- gdb --pid `pidof evolution-data-server-2.26`
(gdb) continue

[Bug 324867] Re: Sony Vaio laptop does not behave correctly when connecting a projector

2009-03-03 Thread Glenn Diebolt Jackson
My Vaio requires me to reboot in order to make the projector show up.
Depending on which resolution I set the video to feed the projector, you
may have to log out and back in. Just get to your presentation a minute
early. Be aware of another bug, which will permanently disable desktop
effects after you set the Preferences -- Screen Resolution nice and
high.

I believe that the Mirror Screens option may cause you trouble,
depending on your projector.

The good news: on my projectors, Ubuntu's resolution and handling kicks Vista
out of the park.
Best, Glenn
