[Bug 1616332] Re: gnome-software using hundreds of MB of memory when not in use

2023-10-25 Thread Leon Matthews
Ubuntu 23.10 still has this problem. Without actually using the app I
saw an RSS of 600MB on my AMD64 desktop, measured using `sudo smem -tk`.
After a reboot (still without opening the app manually) I see a steady
300MB RSS.

It's the heaviest app in use on my desktop after Firefox.

While keeping Flatpaks and Snaps up-to-date is great, perhaps it could
exit after having done that?

[Bug 2033597] [NEW] System theme messed up for no apparent reason

2023-08-31 Thread Leon
Public bug reported:

Was browsing the web when all of a sudden all icons changed and system
theme now looks like a blast from the past.

Specifically:
- "Home" icon on the desktop
- Trash, disk icons on the app drawer
- Icons and buttons on the "Restart required" msgbox, and its topbar icon (next
to wifi)
- Folder icons in Files (nautilus) window

[Bug 2020803] Re: logging in at the lock screen causes the system to log me out and start over.

2023-06-01 Thread Leon Adato
AND IT'S BACK!!

Just for context, I've had an ongoing issue where icons in the tray
(dropbox, keybase, etc) aren't showing up. Pre-Lobster, I'd installed
Extensions manager to see if ti fixed it (kind of, but not really). Last
night the icons were being wonky so I uninstalled Ext. Mgr and this
issue (lock screen logging me out) resurfaced.

I'm not implying causality, I just wanted to give a picture. But the
problem just occurred and I'm attaching a link to journal.txt (it was
too big to upload directly) for reference.

[Bug 2020803] [NEW] logging in at the lock screen causes the system to log me out and start over.

2023-05-25 Thread Leon Adato
Public bug reported:

After my system lock screen enables (whether through timeout or if I
manually lock it), unlocking the system causes all programs to forcibly
shut down and a new session to start. Effectively, I'm logging in fresh
every time the lock screen is enabled.

Hi everyone,
i worked for a while in an OSS called Spinnaker.io. I understand is annoying to
deal with so many approaches and personalities.

This message is just to say thank you for all the support to the ubuntu
distro.

I really like using ubuntu and yes there are changes and improvements
but to me is a good challenge to learn something new and try something
else.

Kepp up the good work
God bless

I'm experiencing this in Ubuntu Groovy 20.10 as well, but I generally
only notice it in the gnome top panel. Moving the mouse over the clock
or attempting to take a screenshot clears the display error. I've

[Bug 1870736] Re: [nvidia] Screen scaling 125% gives 200%

2021-01-22 Thread Leon White
I think I am having a related problem, Ubuntu 20.10 with all updates
installed, nvidia-driver-418-server driver.

Lenovo W540 i7-4810MQ
Nvidia K2100M + Intel HD 4600
Built-in display 2880x1620 native
External display 1920x1080 native

I want to set 200% scaling on the built-in display and 100% on the external
display, but this is not possible. I can set 100% or 200% for both displays:
- 100%: external display looks fine, built-in display too small
- 200%: built-in display looks fine, external display too large

If I enable fractional scaling then I can set different scaling for each
display. The size of everything now looks good on both displays, but
every second pixel on the external display looks blurry at 100%. This is
particularly noticeable when moving the I-bar cursor of the mouse
horizontally over text. This is not the case when fractional scaling is
not enabled, so I think it is rendering the external display at double
the resolution and scaling down with an inappropriate algorithm. How can
I set different scaling on different displays without enabling
fractional scaling? I wasn't able to try nightwing666's solution because
/etc/modprobe.d/nvidia-modeset.conf does not exist for me, but `sudo cat
/sys/module/nvidia_drm/parameters/modeset` returns Y so I think it is
enabled anyway.

It's a relatively old GPU and the nvidia site claims 340 is the right
driver to use, but Ubuntu offered drivers up to 418 so I am using that.
I don't mind using the intel GPU, some other driver or figuring out GPU
switching, I just want it to work. Really appreciate any help, thanks!

Under Ubuntu 19.10 I could use the sound applet in the gnome-control-

[Bug 1872861] [NEW] Sound applet won't change output device

2020-04-14 Thread Leon Matthews
Public bug reported:

Using the gnome-control-centre sound applet to change the output device
from the motherboard's default to an external USB device used to work
well on 19.10, but does not work on 20.04 Beta.

I use a USB headphone DAC/amp on my desktop (Schiit Modi/Magni combo).
Under Ubuntu 19.10 I could use the sound applet in the gnome-control-
center to select either that USB device or basic audio through the HDMI
cable on my monitor (it would always default to the basic audio on
reboot, but that's another story) then use my headphones happily.

Using Ubuntu 20.04 Beta the sound applet shows all of the expected
devices, but choosing different devices has no effect - any music then
played continues to come only from the monitor. Using the 'Test' button
plays sound only through the monitor also.

[Bug 1620806] Re: gedit edit window is transparent when using Ambiance and Radiance themes

2016-10-27 Thread Leon du Plessis
I can confirm this bug on the calculator with the transparent box, this
is making the gnome calculator useless. I upgraded from Ununtu 16.04 to
16.10. I have been upgrading this laptop from 14.04 and also run the
standard themes, might played with themes in the past though. My laptop
has a amd radeon card. But what I noticed was that if I go to
Additional Drivers tab on Software and Updates my card is not showing
anymore, it used to show and was on the generic driver.

[Bug 1458212] [NEW] Language layout of password input after screen is locked cannot be changed

2015-05-23 Thread Leon
Public bug reported:

When my session is locked (after not using the computer for a while),
the language layout of the keyboard input cannot be changed to English,
so I cannot log back in using the lock screen. I have to click Switch
user, and there I can type my password in English to log back in. And
after I log back in, the language layout switching doesn't work: it
stays on English no matter what.

[Bug 1414460] [NEW] The sound output device doesn't switch back to Speakers after HDMI disconnect

2015-01-25 Thread Leon
Public bug reported:

When I connect an HDMI cable to my laptop, I go to the Sound condifuration to
switch the output to HDMI.
When I disconnect the HDMI cable, I have to go back to the sound configuration
and select Speakers, even though it's THE ONLY AVAILABLE DEVICE.

Upon HDMI disconnect I exepect it to automatically switch (back) the the
available output device if there's only one, or to the last one used, if
there are several.

[Bug 1271591] Re: upstart job race prevents gnome-keyring from being ssh agent

2014-03-07 Thread Leon
I can confirm what Andre is saying: launching a terminal via the
launcher or the dash (or synapse) results in Unity not using gnome-
keyring. If I launch via ctrl-alt-t gnome-keyring is used.

Launch via the dash:
SSH_AGENT_PID=2253
SSH_AUTH_SOCK=/tmp/ssh-y0YsIQziIbZX/agent.2249

Launch via ctr-alt-t:

[Bug 1155460] [NEW] Problem adding email addresses to Contact List

Public bug reported:

I can successfully add email addresses to a Contact List using the
Select ... dialog box.

An apparently simpler way to add an email list is to double-click on the
name of the Contact List, and enter the email in the box labeled Type
an e-mail address or drag a Contact into the list below:

When I add an email addres this way, it appears to add correctly. But
when I re-open the Contact List, I see an entry that consists of garbage
characters. If I try to send an email to such an email list, I get an
error message.

[Bug 969657] Re: No way to empty trash in gnome-fallback

2012-11-13 Thread Leon Arundell
I addressed this problem by accessing the Rubbish Bin from Thunar File

It would be more convenient to have a Rubbish Bin readily visible.

I tried Alt-right clicking on the panel, but nothing happened.

Is there another way to make the trashcan applet visible on the desktop?

[Bug 871985] Re: The printing panel shouldn't display errors about firewalld not running

2011-10-17 Thread Leon
Considering how this patch made it into Gnome without noticing the
distro specific requirements, especially noting these lines that should
have raised a red flag or at least an eyebrow:

+#define FIREWALLD_BUS org.fedoraproject.FirewallD
+#define FIREWALLD_PATH /org/fedoraproject/FirewallD
+#define FIREWALLD_IFACE org.fedoraproject.FirewallD

I'd say complaining to GNOME devs probably won't make much difference. I
know no one's perfect, but I wold have thought that their patches
underwent a little more scrutiny and required some level of review
before inclusion.

Anyway, am I correct in assuming the easiest fix would be a to point the
printer configuration launcher (correct terminology?) in gnome control
center to point to system-config-printer?

[Bug 871985] Re: The printing panel shouldn't display errors about firewalld not running

2011-10-14 Thread Leon
To add the printer log into another desktop environment, even Unity works. Once
the printer is added it will work in Gnome 3. But as far as I know you can't do
it in Gnome 3 itself.

As far as a fix goes, my own interpretation doesn't leave me feeling
confident that it will get fixed by Gnome devs any time soon but rather
will have to wait until some future release, so maybe someone can create
a replacement applet, or the Ubuntu devs can create a patched package
that removes this .

[Bug 871985] [NEW] Using Gnome control panel to add a network printer now requires FirewallD

2011-10-10 Thread Leon
Public bug reported:

It appears a patch was added to Gnome back in July that requires FirewallD to
be running in order to add a network printer.
see: http://mail.gnome.org/archives/commits-list/2011-July/msg09761.html

This only appears to affect those using the Gnome 3 desktop environment, and
this problem is not present in Unity, so you can still add the pinter in
Unity's control panel, but users wanting to use Gnome will encounter this. The
specific error message is:
FirewallD is not running. Network printer detection needs services mdns, ipp,
ipp-client and samba-client enabled on firewall.

The documentation in the mentioned patch suggests this behavior is
actually intentional. However, FirewallD is, as far as I know, specific
to Fedora.

1) release: Ubuntu Oneiric Beta 2 (64 bit, but others likely to be
affected)

2) issue is more specific to the Gnome 3 desktop environment as a whole,
although there may be individual packages that can be patched to circumvent
this behavior

3) I expected the previous behavior of being able to add a network printer
without having a package that does not even exist for Ubuntu

4) I got this nice error message that tells me FirewallD is not
running. Network printer detection needs services mdns, ipp, ipp-client
and samba-client enabled on firewall.

As far as a solution goes, a documented work-around may be a good idea
(such as an FAQ entry that says simply to install the network printer in
Unity), at least until a more permanent solution can be found.

This is bug was originally asked as a question here:
https://answers.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/gnome-
nettool/+question/173836 but it was suggested that a bug report be
submitted instead.

[Bug 851383] Re: geany crashed when trying to open a second file

2011-10-04 Thread Leon Matthews
OP here.

Contrary to what Adar wrote above, I'm still seeing the issue, even
after running update-manager this morning, with a reboot for good
measure.

No worries though, I'm sure the fix will come through soon. I'm
thrilled to have had my bug addressed -- I've received much better
support than any commercial OS I've ever used! :-)

[Bug 755283] Re: plain text in shortcuts prevent typing that character in terminal.

2011-04-09 Thread Peter Leon Collins
Start Menu Accessories Terminal
When terminal has started and prompt is displayed, type 'u' with or without the
quotes.
The main menu line at the top of the terminal window will toggle between
display and hide each time the lower case u is pressed.
When the menu line at the top of terminal is visible, click on View. The top
entry is Show Menubar and the keyboard shortcut shown at the right side of the
menu display is a U which is shown in upper case. However I find that upper
case U does not have this effect, only the lower case u toggles the menu.

On the menu bar click Edit, click Keyboard shortcuts. Deselect Enable
menu access keys. Click Close. The words on the menu bar show no
underlines. Type u. Menu no longer displays. Type u. Menu re-displays.
Click Edit, click Keyboard shortcuts. Enable menu access keys. Click
Close. Hold alt, press v, release alt, press m. The menu no longer
displays. Repeat alt-v ... nothing happens. Type u and the menu bar
displays.

Let's try to change the shortcut for menubar (currently u) to ctrl+alt+u
(ctrl and ctrl+shift are already in use). Alt e k. Scroll in shortcut
keys to view hide and show menubar, key U (which ought be u but let's
not get too fussy - though if you can make such a change for all letters
to which it is relevant, that would not be a bad thing to do). The Gnome
Terminal help file states Viewing the Keyboard Shortcut Settings but
of course I want to change them. There is no 'button' for doing so.
Right click in the line. Nothing. Left click. Nothing. Click all along
the line (you can see I'm trying to be thorough!)

!@#$%^* Oh my! Single click on the shortcut key character (in this case
the U) and the words New accelerator are shown. Hold down the ctrl and
alt and type u. The display changes to Ctrl+Alt+U - success!

Okay. The action required so that the bug can be marked 'fixed' is to
amend the documentation so that in Section 3.5, under Shortcut Keys,
there is an additional section called Changing Shortcut Keys which
contains the instruction left-click on the shortcut key value that you
want to change. Type the new key value to be used, including control,
alt and shift keys as required. The new key or key combination will
display. Click Close.

That, in my view, is the simplest, easiest, and most effective fix
required.

Thank you for your support. You forced me back to more thorough
investigation, which was indeed required, due to the shortfall in the
doco - which I sincerely hope will now be fixed!

Peter

I'm having this problem too since 10.04 but I was never annoyed enough to

missing, Sometimes an icon is in half.
The F1/F7 trick solved this. I see the applets flashing and then all is normal.

Just to make it clear: the file on the left is a .tar.gz and the one on
right in is a .tar.lzo

[Bug 654892] [NEW] Menu option to extract tar.lzo file doesn't appear anymore

2010-10-04 Thread Leon Nardella
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: file-roller

I just installed Maverick from RC iso, on amd64 and am fully updated.

Installed lzop in order to recover my data backuped in a tar.lzo file,
but that option doesn't appear anymore when I right-click the backup
file.

File-roller itself can open the file successfully when I try it
manually.

I guess this is just some hook missing either in the file-roller or lzop
package, but I don't know how to fix it myself.

** Affects: file-roller (Ubuntu)
 Importance: Undecided
 Status: New

2010-09-06 Thread Leon
Me too! I tried to set the laptop monitor to off and enable the external
monitor (VGA).
The error was: gnome-display-properties crashed with SIGSEGV in g_value_init()
