[Bug 882281] Re: gedit: backup file on save broken

2012-07-24 Thread Michael Nagel
** Summary changed:

- gedit is set to provide a backup file afer a save. However, gedit has not
done so since its ubuntu lucid release. It just replaces the original copy of
whatever file it being saved. The preferences have been set to provide a
backup. This is not a permissions problem. I can create new text files and it
obviously writes them to the partition where I want to save the created new
files.

[Bug 986399] Re: Help links don't work in several games

2012-07-20 Thread Michael Nagel
I seem to have problems installing this upgrade.
With the Software Update GUI I cannot select the packages to be upgraded.
With apt-get upgrade and apt-get dist-upgrade I see them marked as kept
back as cited below, but see no way to install them.

The following packages have been kept back:
  gnome-sudoku gnomine

The situation has been like that for some weeks now.
In desperation I tried synaptic, and the upgrade is possible using synaptic,
but the attached warning/info is displayed.

Best Regards
Michael

[Bug 844241] Re: Backlight not restored when moving the mouse

2011-12-18 Thread Michael Nagel
I am running Ubuntu 11.10 32 bit on a Lenovo B570 and can confirm this bug.
See the attached screenshot for the settings.

After one minute the display is turned off and neither moving the mouse or
pressing keys will reactivate it.
No messages appear in the syslog.

Pressing FN+UP (increase brightness) however does turn on the monitor, setting
it to minimum brightness (that is: the first step with actual brightness, not
off). If I keep holding down those keys the screen will brighten up to the
normal, fully usable level.
When pressing FN+UP the syslog gets flooded with the following messages:

[Bug 267642] Re: copying a folder from a secure webdav server to disk results in a html file

2011-11-19 Thread Michael Nagel
As indicated in the GNOME bug and verified by me with an up-to-date lucid
install:
This does not only affect COPY but also MOVE.

Whereas the situation for COPY is unfortunate, because the contents of
the folder are not copied, for MOVE it results in a massive data loss,
because not only are the original files not moved/renamed, but also they
are deleted, leaving you with just a listing of them...

This should therefore clearly be raised in priority and fixed in the LTS
release.

[Bug 439448] Re: visual corruption affecting several panel applets

2010-07-31 Thread Michael Nagel
I removed the lower panel and I am still having trouble with this bug. I doubt
that the number of panels is connected to the cause of the bug, because both
people with one and people with two panels experience the bug.
I think it is possible that the number of panels has some influence on internal
timings. And because delaying the creation of the panels seems to change a lot
(according to some comments above) I think there might be some timing issue /
race condition.

[Bug 11334] Re: MASTER Copy-Paste doesn't work if the source is closed before the paste

2010-05-24 Thread Michael Nagel
Making the xserver the owner of all content is pretty much the same as
using a clipboard manager and making that the owner of all content.
There are working clipboard managers ready to be installed from the
repository -- namely klipper, glipper and parcellite . they are the more
or less official workaround as suggested by collin watson (see comment #
207 ) why none of these clipboard managers is installed by default goes
beyond my understanding.

There is one problem with these clipboard manager that causes problems
with programs like e.g. the gimp and other, that is quite hard to fix
properly.

When exporting some lines of text to the clipboard the suggested
approach (just grabbing it when it is exported) will work just fine.
With binary data like images the problem gets more complicated because
now you have a lot more data and it potentially contains lots of
troublesome bits (nullbytes and the like) that must not crash nor
confuse your clipboard manager. but that is pretty much solved by
current clipboard mangers, too.

The real problem is about nonstatic data. In the above examples the
content was present in the source application and you only had to copy
it away from there. The clipboard offers functionality to create the
data on demand. For example you could work on some vector graphic in
inkscape and copy and paste the data to gimp where it would arrive as
pixel data. The pixel data is only created when you paste it somewhere.
So you can copy a hundred times and paste only the last copy, then only
that version will be converted to pixel data. That is the clipboard
basically asks your application to provide some content and it is up to
you if you answer with some existing data or generate some new data just
to satisfy that request. When that generation is expensive it is not
practicable to do it every time something is offered to the clipboard
but only when something is requested from the clipboard. But a clipboard
manager basically request the data every time some data is offered to
the clipboard invalidating that optimization and causing a lot of data
to be generated and transferred.

That overhead might be tolerated, too. But to further complicate matters:
When exporting something to the clipboard you don't export something fixed.
Fixed means you already decided about what to export (although you might not
yet have created it yet -- see above). No, you say that you offer plain text,
rich text, binary data or a nice picture. When pasting the application
does not request the contents of the clipboard but says it understands plain
text, vector graphics, binary data and wave sounds. Now some arbitration
takes place and the applications agree on transferring plain text (or binary
data whatever is better for some definition of better). Thus it is not even
clear what a clipboard manager should grab when an application offers some data
for export to the clipboard. It might grab all the offered datastreams but that
obviously means some heavy overhead...

One thing gnome does is to offer a clipboard manager where your
application can store the things it offers to the clipboard when it
exits. Control over the clipboard is then transferred to that clipboard
manager. That way no data is lost and data is only copied when your
application exits, minimizing overhead. This means each and every past,
present and future application must be extended to make use of that
manager (opt in instead of opt out or forced use of the manager). That
is not gonna happen. Furthermore it will not work for crashing
applications...

Conclusion: Why not go with a clipboard manager that grabs everything?
And then working around the performance bottlenecks by stopping certain
transfers from happening? You could offer an API to application to mark
certain exports as not relevant for the clipboard manager and you could
blacklist certain offerings in the clipboard manager for some cases
where you cannot modify the application. You could even display a shiny
notify-system message telling the user: what you just copied will not
be available permanently. Paste it now before closing that app! That
manager would support legacy applcation and should be installed by
default so no user is bothered with this bug ever again.

How to implement: Patch glipper/parcellite to grab everything, offer
some blacklisting to mitigate bottlenecks and talk to someone at
canonical to include it in the default install...

[Bug 189774] Re: seahorse shows passwords without verification

2010-04-11 Thread Michael Nagel
from a theoretical, scientific, cryptographical point of view it might
be (and probably is) no problem to display the passwords without
restriction once the keyring has been unlocked as anyone really
interested can retrieve them anyways. not having to retype the
password[1] dramatically lowers the amount of both knowledge and malice
needed, however.

contra: having to retype the password might create the false illusion of
a security and users might believe passwords are secure when they are
not.

pro: on the other hand, it might stop your buddy from looking at all
your passwords when you show him the wlan password he needs when your
kids playing in the same room accidentally throw a basketball against
your chair, a leg breaks, you fall down, spill your cup of coffee. now
you go to the kitchen to clean up the mess, to the bathroom to clean up
some more mess and change clothes. and then you remember: damn! i
forgot to lock the keyring...

this user story is purely fictional. i don't even have kids :) but i
think having to enter your password before displaying passwords in plain
text (or not allowing that at all) would stop most
opportunistic/accidental password leakage.

[1] the keyring manager in firefox uses this approach and i think is a
sound approach...

[Bug 11334] Re: MASTER Copy-Paste doesn't work if the source is closed before the paste

2010-03-28 Thread Michael Nagel
Here is a log from IRC ubuntu-devel where Collin Watson said some things.
Bottom Line: you have to install a Clipboard Manager but Ubuntu is not
currently planning to install one by default. Installing a Clipboard Manager is
not seen as a workaround but as a solution.

Technically it is a bit more complicated than you might think (see
information about SAVE_TARGETS) and what GNOME currently does is
including a Clipboard Manager on an Opt-In basis (that is your
application can request to make use of the Clipboard Manager) thus
leaving all legacy applications, KED applications, Desktop agnostic
applications remain broken.

(18:53:24) The topic for #ubuntu-devel is: Lucid Alpha 2 released | Archive:
open | MoM running (but use bzr!) | Development of Ubuntu (not support, not app
development on Ubuntu) | #ubuntu for support and general discussion for
dapper-karmic | #ubuntu-motu for getting involved in development |

http://wiki.ubuntu.com/HelpingWithBugs
(19:01:21) nailora: there is bug 11334 that i am following for quite some time
because it bugs me, too :) it is about what happens to the clipboard contents
when an application quits. discussion has become more and more off-topic, and
there seems to be a lack of developer participation. i'd like to know how to
proceed with this...
(19:01:25) ubottu: Launchpad bug 11334 in ubuntu MASTER Copy-Paste doesn't
work if the source is closed before the paste [Wishlist,Confirmed]
https://launchpad.net/bugs/11334
(19:04:26) nailora: it is somewhat broken deep within the x-server (or the spec
the x-server follows). or nearly all application just do not to the right thing
as it can be fixed on application level, too. but this will not happen for all
legacy applications. clipboard managers are not the solution but a workaround,
but waiting for a solution in x.org/the spec x.org follows will take lots of
time and a workaround might be good in the meantime... ...
(19:04:51) genii: I have Intel Pro/1000 XF (fibre optic card) ethtool is
reporting only 1000 Base T (copper) capability (when should be 1000 Base FX).
Is there some known prob/fix for the e1000 driver?
(19:05:21) cjwatson: nailora: workaround: use a clipboard manager application,
that takes a copy of the clipboard contents and stashes it
(19:06:28) ***pitti reenables hourly WI tracker updates, sorry
(19:06:42) cjwatson: it's an X design issue, I wouldn't expect it to be fixed
any other way
(19:06:57) cjwatson: indeed I don't think it is *fixable* any other way
(19:07:00) nailora: cjwatson: i know that and i do it it that way personally.
but arguably this should just work for everyone. that would require a
solution that could be included in the default installation
(19:07:27) cjwatson: if you're starting from the position that clipboard
managers are not the solution but a workaround, then there is no other option
except to wait for (or participate in?) an X design fix
(19:08:43) cjwatson: X clipboard clients ask the clipboard owner (an
application) for clipboard contents when they need it, and if the application
exits then there's no owner to respond; there's no way that can be an
application bug
(19:08:59) chrisccoulson: which applications don't work correctly?
(19:09:13) chrisccoulson: i could only recreate that with firefox, and that's
been fixed upstream recently
(19:10:20) cjwatson: maybe something is managing the clipboard centrally now?
(19:10:30) nailora: it seems that upon exiting an application is able to ask
the x server to preserve the contents somehow (most gnome apps and notably
firefox nowadays do it). so it can be fixed on application level
(19:12:15) jdong: isn't that something introduced way bac:
http://library.gnome.org/misc/release-notes/2.12/#rngeneral
(19:12:29) ***cjwatson is just five seconds late with the same link
(19:12:51) chrisccoulson: the clipboard is still based around the selection
mechanism
(19:12:51) nailora: but most apps simply do not do that. and somehow it seems
redundant that you have to request this feature if i cannot think of a
situation where you would not want it. so it should be default to save the
contents and thus be handled in x.org (even so contents from crashing
applications would still be lost that way).
(19:12:59) cjwatson: gnome-settings-daemon, apparently
(19:13:07) chrisccoulson: but applications that don't work explicitly destroy
these resources when they close
(19:13:45) nailora: therefore i think a push solution (instead of pull like
now) is in fact better (and clipboard managers are basically transforming it
from pull to push)
(19:14:57) cjwatson: nailora: do you have evidence that applications need to
explicitly request this feature?
(19:16:32) cjwatson: the current state appears to be basically just a clipboard
manager built into gnome-settings-daemon
(19:17:13) cjwatson: I don't see any application-level requests going on -

2009-11-30 Thread Michael Nagel
@david: it works properly the first time but fails every subsequent
time. to reproduce the bug do:

1) press power button to show menu (opens in foreground, has focus)
2) select suspend
3) press power button to resume the computer
4) enter password to unlock screen
5) press power button to show menu (opens in foreground, but does not have

you have to start with one iteration of suspend/resume to make it
work. this is reproducible every time on multiple machines for me.

[Bug 433439] [NEW] renaming to a name that already exists

2009-09-20 Thread Michael Nagel
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: nautilus

current behavior when trying to rename* a file/folder to a name that is
already taken is not optimal.

current behavior: a message box pops up telling that the object cannot
be renamed. when i dismiss the message, i am taken to the state before
beginning the rename and my changes are lost.

proposed behavior: inform the user that the chosen name conflicts and
let him edit it. i.e. either place an edit field in the message box (not
optimal) or take him back to the file browser but insert the conflicting
name in the field and stay in renaming mode so that the user can easily
fix the situation by appending a 2 (or something like that) to the
filename.

[Bug 372132] Re: Create Document Templates difficult to use

2009-07-20 Thread Michael Nagel
fig_wrigth, see bug 285998 if that is what you experienced.

There are several problems regarding templates right now:

- there are no default templates (see this bug 372132 )
- the right click menu is pointless by default right now
- there is no obvious way to make it useful
-- (like an click here to install some templates-menu item instead of the no
templates installed-menu item you cannot click)
- there is a ~/Templates folder in user's home that is of no obvious use and
that is not hidden by default (bug 193689)
- things are permanently messed up if you remove that folder (bug 285998)
- in nautilus there is a Go-Templates menu item that is documented/explained
poorly

that whole Templates-Thing should be overhauled and i find mac_v's post
quite interesting.

PS: as another example of possible usage, i know people that put
A4-landscape.odt, A4-portrait.odt (and so on) in there to spare
configuring format and orientation every time.

[Bug 11334] Re: Copy-Paste doesn't work if the source is closed before the paste

2009-07-08 Thread Michael Nagel
i felt we had established that just do not close the program is not an
acceptable solution!

gimp enthusiasts hate klipper because it leeches everything it can get.
if they were for a pragmatic solution they would not offer that much
date but just an internal pointer. or klipper simply special-cases this
scenario and everything would just work.

condemning klipper because there seems to be the golden bullet solution
of integrating something into x does not take us anywhere.

one should elaborate a plan of how to get the x-solution because it is
the right thing! but it will take its time to specify, implement and
distribute. for the transition time we should use a program like klipper
because there are just a few showstoppers to fix until it can be used as
a decent quality workaround.

so i definitely suggest the following two-step approach:
1. use klipper to get things working in near future. pragmatically fix
showstoppers as with gimp and problems with binary data. this could be done
within weeks.
2. enhance the x server to make things just work. this will take months to
plan and coordinate and with implementation and release this could be more than
a year. so an transitional solution as proposed in step 1 makes sense.

+ agree that not being able to take screenshots is not intended bahavior
+ and considered a bug. thus this report is allowed to stay open :)
+
+ a known workaround for taking screenshots of menus is to directly launch the
screengrabber with a delay like so:
+ gnome-screenshot --delay=5

i do not think so. sebastien bacher marked this report as duplicate of a
bug that *very probably* discussed the same problem you experience. you
should have a look there and any further discussion should take place
there -- except this indeed is not a duplicate.

[Bug 22007] Re: no 'Settings' button in gnome-screensaver

2009-06-28 Thread Michael Nagel
i want to point out that this bug not only causes inconveniences because
some screensavers do not perform as good as they could, but some
screensavers are outright broken.

the screensaver to show pictures from the user directory must be
configured before it can work for non-english installs because the
folder name is hardcoded and incorrect for non-english installs. one
could of course improve the code to determine the correct folder but it
is still likely that the user puts his pictures elsewhere or does not
want to display all of them but just a subset.

so making screensavers not configurable is problematic for two reasons:
1. the settings chosen right now are broken under certain circumstances and
there needs to be a way to correct them
2. it is questionable if screensaver selection can ever be simplified so far
that no configuration is needed. people want to personalize their screensaver
just as they want to personalize their desktop. i do not see why this should be
technically restricted.

if our opinion is that much diverging from upstreams opinion maybe our
code should be diverging, too. however i cannot believe that they
neglect the need for configurability that vehemently. we should contact
them first.

[Bug 11334] Re: Copy-Paste doesn't work if the source is closed before the paste

2009-05-02 Thread Michael Nagel
I had a conversation with Philipp Kern recently and he basically shares
our opinion. To get it in the default release we should:

- collect all known/possible regressions (like cp of binary data, some magic
gimp seems to do, ...)
- find someone from the official canonical team to support this

probably a blueprint summing up the reason why this change is needed
together with these two points is the way to go.

[Bug 11334] Re: Copy-Paste doesn't work if the source is closed before the paste

2009-04-26 Thread Michael Nagel
@comment 6:
in true unix history of having one tool to do one thing right i do not
necessarily think it is a workaround to have a program dedicated to managing
the clipboard.

however i think solid copypaste is a feature everyone can expect to
work out of the box. and because i think it is highly unlikely to get
this supported in X directly anytime soon i think the right thing to do
is to include a clipboard manager (be it glipper or parcellite) in the
default distribution. maybe in a modified version to show no task list
icon (and thus only exposing the basic copy and paste just
works-behavior but not the advanced historyco options).

somewhere i read a complain against clipboard manager where it blocks a
feature in gimp that responds differently to paste-requests from
different applications (thus exporting all pixel data when pasting to a
third party application and doing some internal speed-optimized pointer
logic when simply pasting to a different layer within gimp). this is a
valid point but it nowhere justifies to ship such a broken copypaste
for most use cases. and if this behavior is so critical gimp may just
provide two copy-methods one for the data and one for the pointer -- and
export the more sane one to the ctrl-c shortcut.

-- we should really try to get a clipboard manager in the default
distribution for karmic. the importance of this bug should be raised
to... at least something above normal imho.

[Bug 285998] Re: Deleting ~/Templates and rebooting makes a change in ~/.config/user-dirs.dirs

2009-03-10 Thread Michael Nagel
i see this clearly as a bug, see newly added duplicates.

important comments from there:

i have deleted my templates folder and nautilus does not handle this very well.
clicking on Go-Templates brings me to my home folder.

(that is at least consistent with
XDG_TEMPLATES_DIR=$HOME/
line from .config/user-dirs.dirs)

however this setup is not very useful because i most certainly do not
want to have my templates in my home folder (or put it the other way
round: all my files as a template). and secondly, it does not work, i.e.
even the files that are in my home folder are not available as
templates...

i suggest that a non-existent template dir should not be changed to $HOME and i
should be offered some assistance when clicking on Go-Templates in this case.

round: all my files as a template). and secondly, it does not work, i.e.
even the files that are in my home folder are not available as
templates...

i suggest that a non-existent template dir should not be changed to $HOME and i
should be offered some assistance when clicking on Go-Templates in this case.

[Bug 25827] Re: Thumbnails for Openoffice.org documents

2009-02-15 Thread Michael Nagel
i dont think this is correctly filed against tracker.

the bug i am talking about is that you do not get thumbnails for odt
files in nautilus like you get for pdfs.

i do not know too much of the technical details about thumbnail
generation, but the only two programs that make sense to be responsible
for generating and displaying the thumbnails are nautilus itself (or a
plugin/addon) and the word processor (i.e. open office) (or a
plugin/addon).

[Bug 329539] [NEW] enable extracting to mp3 in rhythmbox

2009-02-14 Thread Michael Nagel
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: rhythmbox

under edit-preferences-music there is an option to edit the preferred
audio format. without restricted-extras installed the list lacks mp3
support. but if i click on edit i can edit gnome audio profiles and
mp3 is listed there but whatever i set there... is useless because i
dont actually have mp3 support. this menu definitely gives the wrong
impression that there was some kind of mp3 support.

** Affects: rhythmbox (Ubuntu)
 Importance: Undecided
 Status: New

[Bug 10905] Re: Can't use any global keyboard shortcuts or hotkeys when applet/menu is open

2009-02-13 Thread Michael Nagel
is this gonna stay wontfix?

i consider this a true bug (maybe wishlist importance) because even
though there maybe technical reasons that this cannot(doesnot) work
there are no semantic reasons why this is not something useful to have.
and the incoming duplicates confirm that users expect this to work.

my favorite example is that you cannot make screenshots of menus (well,
sleep 5; gnome-screenshot does the trick)

could this be reopend as wishlist at least?
