Thanks for your bug report jamy015! Is your laptop fully charged? The
applet by default disappears when it is fully charged, so try unplugging
it for a minute and seeing if it appears. If it doesn't it sounds like a

[Bug 283896] Re: can't use an empty configuration

2008-10-16 Thread Mike Rooney
Sebastien, this is a real and perfectly valid issue. You can't just not
use gnome-panel; it is integrated into the desktop experience and
provides no way to remove it from startup since it isn't explicitly
there in the first place. This issue is if you don't want to use it,
there is no apparent way to do this, although the intuitive way would be
to just remove the last panel like any other panel. The bug, as such, is
that you can't remove the last panel like any other panel.

Typically you have to resort to a dirty hack or two to stop gnome-panel
from starting, and we are quite familiar with this in the AWN world.
This is definitely a common issue with users using docks such as AWN who
no longer have a need for any panels but lack a simple or clean way to
remove them.

** Changed in: gnome-panel (Ubuntu)
   Status: Invalid = Confirmed

** Summary changed:

- can't use an empty configuration
+ Can't remove all (last) gnome-panel panels

** Description changed:

  Binary package hint: gnome-panel

- Since I want to use awn instead of gnome-panel I'd like to remove all
- gnome-panel panels. However when attempting to remove the last panel,
- the menu item is greyed out.
+ Users are able to right click on panels of gnome-panel and select
+ Delete This Panel. However when there is only one panel remaining,
+ this option is grayed out. This wouldn't be a problem if gnome-panel was
+ an entry in sessions that could simply be disabled/removed to stop it
+ from starting up, but this isn't the case.
+
+ Many users of docks such as AWN have no need for gnome-panel but must
+ resort to dirty hacks to stop it from running (such as renaming /usr/bin
+ /gnome-panel, which causes upgrade problems among others).
+
+ The cleanest solution would just be to allow the user to remove any
+ gnome-panel, whether or not it is the last. Ideally this would still
+ allow the Alt+F2 launcher to work which is bundled with gnome-panel, but
+ a simple way to stop gnome-panel from starting would suffice.

[Bug 271229] Re: screensavers broken in intrepid with compiz

2008-10-15 Thread Mike Rooney
** This bug is no longer a duplicate of bug 278112
   Screensaver doesn't start

** Description changed:

  Binary package hint: electricsheep
+
+ NOTE: Seemingly NOT a duplicate of bug 278112. This bug is different
+ than the original bug because the original bug is fixed with unchecking
+ Undirect Fullscreen Windows, the one reported here, however, is not
+ fixed with that.

electricsheep won't run for me in fullscreen mode as a screensaver in
Ubuntu Intrepid with an ATI X800 All In Wonder video card with compiz
enabled and running (using open driver). I run a widescreen Dell LCD
monitor at 1680x1050. I don't know whether the bug is actually in
electricsheep, compiz, or some Xorg related package.

I can run it from a terminal prompt to have it come up in a window:
electricsheep --root 0 and it's fine. The installed desktop file
launches it like this: electricsheep --root 1 --zoom 1 With or without
zoom, the --root 1 option kills it. If in gnome-screensaver I can
preview the screensaver perfectly with no problems but when it trys to
run it flashes to black and then immediately quits, putting you back on
  your desktop.

Disabling compiz temporarily and switching back to metacity instead and
electricsheep works perfectly fine. I read a bit and (with compiz
enabled) tried turning the setting Unredirect fullscreen windows both
on and off with no effect on electricsheep.

I also downloaded mplayer and tried running electricsheep like this:
electricsheep --mplayer 1 Interestingly enough, that works with the
version of electricsheep currently in the repo somewhat... it blacks out
the screen, but runs in 4:3 resolution in my widescreen monitor whereas
running electricsheep normally without mplayer (and compiz disabled)
  fills the entire screen.

I've ALSO tried the latest PPA 's from here:
https://launchpad.net/~flam3/+archive
Same effects... runs great without compiz or windowed but won't run as my
screensaver... and this version from the PPA won't accept either the --zoom 1
or --mplayer 1 command line options.

I'd appreciate any help. I really love this screensaver.

Hi LCID Fire, thanks for using Ubuntu and thanks for taking the time to
file this bug report! As far as I know this is not a regression, as it
has never been possible to remove the last panel. You can remove panels
until you try to do it on the last one, at which point the option will

No, I think the point of the bug report is that rar files are

file-roller just gives you an error. Instead it should offer to

Fair enough, I can understand the reasoning. It would be extra slick
if the Power Management option Ask me was then appropriately split
into two options, something roughly like Prompt me with power

[Bug 12682] Re: Dragging remote volumes to Trash should unmount them

2008-09-27 Thread Mike Rooney
This is actually explicitly against the Gnome HIG. From
http://library.gnome.org/devel/hig-book/stable/principles-match.html.en
:

When using metaphors, however, it is important to neither take the
metaphor too literally, nor to extend the metaphor beyond its reasonable
use. For example, the capacity of a file folder should not be limited to
the capacity of a physical file folder, which presumably could contain
only a few documents before becoming unwieldy. On the other hand, a
waste basket should not be used for anything other than holding
discarded files. It should not be used, for example, to eject a
removable disk such as a floppy or CD.

Also nautilus now has eject buttons on volumes starting in Intrepid so I
think this is arguably both deprecated and undesirable.

[Bug 269901] Re: one click on the places sidebar to show volume

2008-09-19 Thread Mike Rooney
Hi Jarlath! This bug was rated as per
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Bugs/Importance, specifically the first and last
bullet points. While I understand your concern, the actual portion of
the Ubuntu community which actively develops is rather small and
limited, so issues like non-booting systems, program crashes, and
improper configurations are more deserving of higher priorities.

Regardless, this bug is an upstream bug in nautilus and the developers
there don't work based on Ubuntu's importance, they consider it within
the scope of their own project. However one of the core developers of
nautilus picked up on it and discovered the precise cause so I think we
are in good hands :)

Thanks for your input.

[Bug 269934] Re: If not using AWN, icons in bottom panel are hard to distinguish

2008-09-13 Thread Mike Rooney
Yes, I'll mark as gnome-panel. I see what you mean partially, as the
application icons have a sort of fade to them which makes it harder to
spot them quickly.

However in general once you get used to a something you prefer more such
as AWN, it is going to be harder going back. Have you tried enabling
compositing in metacity?

[Bug 117578] Re: filename not changed to the standard when adding a song to ipod

2008-09-10 Thread Mike Rooney
Yes, this is a nasty one since files with fat32 chars can't be
transferred, and rhythmbox just gives a generic error not explaining
why. The files must then be manually renamed and transferred again.

At the very least rhythmbox should sanitize filenames by removing or
replacing such characters, otherwise it can lead to an incredibly
confusing and frustrating user experience. Many users with large
libraries are bound to have a few of these characters such as a quote or
colon. Perhaps this deserves a separate bug specific just to
sanitization, as a new naming scheme isn't necessarily required?

Re: [Bug 253405] Re: Bad quality of a png image when smooth images when zoom is active

2008-08-17 Thread Mike Rooney
So this is an hardware problem?

Not really, not with your specific hardware anyway, it is just How It
Works. I would recommend
http://webdesign.about.com/cs/antialiasing/a/aa051898.htm for a quick
read which might clear up any questions you have. Images on your
screen are made up of pixels, which are of a set size. Anti-aliasing
tries to work around this but a trade-off is that the image can become
blurred. You can't have smooth and sharp at the same time,
unfortunately. Also try
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ClearType#How_ClearType_works for more
interesting related information.

Re: [Bug 253405] Re: Bad quality of a png image when smooth images when zoom is active

2008-08-16 Thread Mike Rooney
In my mind, the text of smooth.png image is fuzziness and the text of
 nosmooth.png picture is not.

Yes, it is going to be a bit fuzzy depending on size and potentially
subpixel hinting (you may want to play around with that on your
system). The whole point of smoothing is to unsharpen, it is a
trade-off, especially for a line with such a small width. Pixels are
only so small; it is a technological limitation of monitors. Maybe
some day we will have true floating point monitors.

[Bug 61237] Re: Drag 'n Drop in list view doesn't work

2008-07-30 Thread Mike Rooney
I experience this as well, but not with the limitation others have
mentioned of having to have lots of items to fill up the list view. For
me, I can't drag and drop to any folder in list view, no matter how few
items are in it, at least with file-roller. Changing to icon view allows
me to drag and drop just fine.

While Goswin's other issue of not being able to drag to select files
(lasso'ing) may be a separate bug report, I wouldn't be surprised if
it was somehow related, as with the right-click issues. Overall,
something funky is going on with the unused portion of the window (where
there aren't icons) in the list view, and the view in general.

[Bug 252885] Re: Drag-and-drop theme from web page fails

2008-07-29 Thread Mike Rooney
This would be great to have. I guess the previous IO library handled
HTTP and the current one does not? I can confirm that it doesn't work in
Hardy, and that a dialog pops up but disappears so quickly you can't
even see it. There is no traceback or message when run from the console.

By the way Colin, I really appreciate you filing bugs from that blog, I
think they are important issues.

[Bug 205773] Re: Nautilus tries to copy a dragged file into Network on hover and freezes

2008-07-28 Thread Mike Rooney
So this was fixed in nautilus 2.25.1 according to upstream; is there any
chance of patching the Hardy nautilus to get this fix? We will probably
also have to apply this patch to Intrepid as well, since that will have
2.24 and not 2.25 IIUC. Creating a patch would be worth the effort I
think, since a) we can't just ignore it since it will still exist in
Intrepid and b) Hardy is an LTS so not fixing this issue there will
cause grief for years to come.

Any thoughts A. Walton, or anyone else?

And a second question, will this stop the error message from appearing

Yes, I must admit this is supremely annoying, not only because it causes
such a delay in which you can't use nautilus, but because it also
destroys your drag state and have to do it over, being careful to not
hover of the network. This happens to me on almost a daily basis. I will
attach a screenshot of the error message that I get in 8.04.1.

[Bug 160996] Re: evince has trouble handling filename with escaped shell characters

2008-06-16 Thread Mike Rooney
Hi Lars. I notice the title says trouble with escaped shell characters,
but as Pedro mentioned, you aren't actually escaping them, unless by
escaping you are referring to the quotes around just part of the
filename. I have never seen a partially quoted filename but perhaps it
is valid. If this is the case can you try escaping the colon with a
backslash, otherwise if the single quotes are part of the filename, try
Pedro's solution, and report back? Thanks!

[Bug 9054] Re: gedit does not read from a pipe

2008-06-16 Thread Mike Rooney
Any reason this is 'Wishlist' if the documentation explicitly mentions
piping as a feature (Gedit Manual / Programming Features):

You can use gedit to pipe the output of a command to a text file.
For example, to pipe the output of an ls command to a text file, type ls
| gedit, then press Return. The output of the ls command is displayed in
a new text file in the gedit window.

It seems like either this bug shouldn't be wishlist (I assume Low
instead), or there should be another bug to the effect of gedit
documentation says it can read from pipes although it can't

[Bug 236778] Re: gnome-appearance-properties causes CPU spike in Hardy

2008-06-07 Thread Mike Rooney
Hi Sebastien. I have edited the title to reflect my understanding of
this bug. I *think* what happened is that the original problem appeared
in hardy-proposed and this bug was filed. Regardless of this bug the
-proposed was pushed to updates, and as such people are commenting about
having the issue without -proposed (I can confirm I have this issue
without -proposed). THEN a fix for this issue was put in -proposed, so
now proposed is fixed, while it is broken in an updated Hardy (reversed
from initially when the bug was filed). Does that make sense? Can anyone
confirm?

[Bug 236778] Re: gnome-appearance-properties causes CPU spike hardy-proposed

2008-06-06 Thread Mike Rooney
I don't get updates from Hardy proposed yet I notice this bug today. Did
it get released into normal updates, and if so, am I understanding
correctly that now a fix is proposed?

[Bug 136702] Re: nautilus 'replace file' dialog box could give more information

2008-05-28 Thread Mike Rooney
Yeah, this seriously hinders usability. I was shocked the first time I
realized I was going to have to go into the other folder, look at the
size and dates, and compare them with the others file myself, for each
file that already existed, each time I did this. Also I can't believe
this has been a bug in Gnome for 7 years, and they even recently
considered marking it as WONTFIX! This seems rather important/crucial
for the default display manager of an OS.

[Bug 235352] Re: tagging doesn't seem to work

2008-05-28 Thread Mike Rooney
I have had this behavior as well, but with specific mp3s, not all of
them. No matter how many times I would retag a certain one, it would
always revert after a second or two. I restarted rhythmbox, and the
computer itself, but nothing worked.

James, would you mind clarifying if this happens with ALL tagging, just
specific formats, or just certain ones? If it isn't all of them, then I
think the title is deceptive. Thanks!

[Bug 9054] Re: gedit does not read from a pipe

2008-05-10 Thread Mike Rooney
Hello, I would just like to add that this also affects Hardy.

Also I appreciate the workaround Igor, but it is unwieldy and assumes
you have write access to the working directory, which is not always
going to be the case.

The upstream bug report seems somewhat stagnant; a patch or two is
provided but from what I gather they are too old to be applicable to the
current codebase.

[Bug 191650] Re: [hardy] there's no 'custom' desktop effect profile after installing ccsm

2008-05-09 Thread Mike Rooney
Nick and Sebastien, the most reasonable solution is to enable the
Custom option after installing compizconfig-settingsmanager and not
just simple-ccsm. The reason why this is important is because if you
install compizconfig-settingsmanager and then change the option in
Appearances, your settings are lost forever! Basically by doing this, we
are not supporting the use of ccsm, only simple-ccsm, which seems silly.

The best solution IMO is to offer the Custom option always there, and if
they click it without ccsm or simple-ccsm, offer to install either (with
a third option to not install anything, since some people can use gconf
as previously mentioned), explaining the differences (ie, advanced vs
simple), and then install and launch the appropriate one.

Either way settings are being lost without enabling Custom for ccsm
and I think that is important, I for one have lost all my settings that
way at least once by disabling Compiz via Appearance, and then realizing
I had no way to re-enable my custom settings.

2008-05-09 Thread Mike Rooney
those users have no need to run this tab at all if they don't want to
select one of the default choices

Yes Sebastien, you have hit on EXACTLY the point, but are looking at it
backwards!!! We DO want to be able to select one the default choices,
after using ccsm, without losing all of our settings! This could be done
in Gutsy, users like Nick and I want to do it in Hardy. It is a very
real and practical use case.

2008-05-09 Thread Mike Rooney
Yes Sebastien, I don't recall any issues in switching between
None/Normal/Extra and Custom. It seemed to remember my settings. Are you
saying it shouldn't, or that it is supposed to but doesn't for some
people?

From duplicate bug #226517, another screenshot was attached which more
clearly illustrates where the volume name is used and where the drive
name is used. I have attached it here. Thanks Jeldert.

[Bug 78038] Re: rhythmbox interferes with suspend

2008-04-21 Thread Mike Rooney
Thanks so much Sebastien for helping squash this bug! I think you have
saved some data with this one, and definitely frustration from all the
upgraders who would have otherwise not been able to shutdown with music
playing.

I am also very glad to see that you took my suggestion and made the
plugin not hidden by default either. This should make it easier for
people to discover it and use it for a fair use case of listening to
music when closing the lid, while normally having suspend or hibernate
occur for this action. Once http://ubuntuguide.org/wiki/Ubuntu:Hardy
becomes existent, I can put an entry there.

However, Sebastien, do you know if there is a more important underlying
bug? It is my understanding that Rhythmbox shouldn't be allowed to deny
the suspend/hibernate on critical battery. Have we discovered a deeper
issue, or not?
