Same problem. New install of 16.04.1.

[Bug 1204378] [NEW] Copy files from mounted cpio does not work

2013-07-24 Thread Fable Fox
Public bug reported:

I double click on a cpio files, causing it to be mounted? on the files
app, so I can click on it and view the files inside. However, when I
copy a folder inside it and to paste it into normal folder, the copy
process doesn't work at all.

It says 0 byte of 600 mb 0 byte per second.

If I click on big X (to the right) the button goes dark but it wasn't
cancelled (the window still there).

Clicking on the tiny x (upper left) doesn't close (just hide / minimize)
or cancel it either, and can still be accessed by right clicking on the
Files icon and select show copy dialog.

[Bug 285104] Re: Keyboard shortcut raise obscured window, otherwise lower doesn't work

2013-06-25 Thread David Fox
This bug is actually in compiz - if you switch to the 2-D mode you get
metacity, and in that mode it is possible to get raise/lower to work.
In 3-D mode (which is really necessary to get decent performance these
days) it is not possible to bind the raise/lower operation.

[Bug 922968] Re: computer suspends again after resume

2013-03-22 Thread Brent Fox
@jsalisbury: You are correct in that the system is simply doing what it
is told, but it's still a bug in the user experience.

The question is what the user is intending to do. Is the user
intentionally telling the system to suspend twice? There's no use case
in which that's useful.

Then we have to consider the user experience. When the user opens the
lid, they are telling the system to wake up because they intend to use
it. They aren't expecting the system to put itself back to sleep, so
this violates the principle of least surprise.

[Bug 604635] Re: [Maverick] Have default settings be energy star 5.0 compliant

2010-07-13 Thread Brent Fox
So, if I could restate the request a bit:

Goal: To have Ubuntu be Energy Star Compliant.

Why?: Some customer tenders are beginning to list Energy Star
Compliance as a requirement, therefore the OEMs must have an Energy Star
compliant OS in order to respond to these tenders.

Implementation Options:
1) Make Ubuntu's default settings comply with Energy Star requirements:
* Put display to Sleep within 15 minutes of user inactivity when on A/C
- Currently this is set to 30 min.
* Activate computer's Sleep mode within 30 minutes of user inactivity when on
A/C.
- Currently this is set to never

Cons: These settings may not be a desirable default for the majority of
users

2) Add a new option to Gnome Power Management to toggle both settings at once
with a checkbox: Enable Energy Star Power Mode or somesuch. I'm guessing
the best place for that toggle would be under the General tab instead of On
AC Power or On DC Power.

Cons: Requires UI changes that would likely need to be pushed upsteam.
Also introduces new strings which would need to be translated.

[Bug 402286] Re: Shuffle Repeat, don't work in Rhythmbox 0.12.0

2010-05-24 Thread Chief Fox
@Pedro. First off sorry for the long response time in advance. I am able
to implement this bug in Karmic also on Ubuntu. To be more specific,
there is no error in the logs, maybe this is just a simple curve ball in
the coding and simple fix... The shuffle button only shuffles songs in
your Library where I thought it would shuffle my Playlist/Play Queue. So
if you have a playlist open and playing from it, or any songs in queue,
then the list isn't played shuffled. It will only shuffle songs in the
Library which is functioning, but maybe would be better for the user if
it was also implemented for the playlist as well. So can we classify
this as a Wishlist or something?

[Bug 532633] Re: [light-theme] please revert the order of the window controls back to menu:minimize, maximize, close

2010-03-18 Thread Fox
I wish Linux proponents would decide whether you want people to switch
to Linux from Windows or OS X, or not. I'm just trying Ubuntu again
(Karmic) after last trying it (I think Dapper Drake was the last version
I'd tried previously). It has improved tremendously since then but now
I read this condescending attitude by the developer and I'm wondering
what is is that makes Linux developers so arrogant at times. You guys
all have Asperger's Syndrome or something? If I want to be treated badly
by a company that thinks that I should have no say at all in their
design decisions, I can just keep using a Mac (in case you are
wondering, I am NOT a Mac fanboy — in fact I sincerely doubt I'll ever
buy another, it has disappointed me in many ways).

Anyway, having used a Mac, I would say that it would not be a big upset
to me if the buttons were on the left provided that the order emulated
that which Mac users are accustomed. But it's troublesome to me that
you want everyone that has learned how to get around in Windows, and/or
on a Mac, to learn yet a third button pattern. This is not an
insignificant thing - I, like many other computer users, have developed
a muscle memory. Maybe you don't experience this and don't understand
it, but some of us don't cope with arbitrary design changes as well as
others. If there were some valid reason for this — if it were necessary
because of some new feature or something, or even because of some legal
issue, then I could understand it, but no one is saying that.

So the way it comes across to me, and probably to many others who've
noticed this change, is that you're doing it simply because you can,
just to prove you wield some kind of power over others. It's like
you're saying, Look, Dad, I can force people all over the world to
change the way they do things! I can make them unlearn YEARS of habit
and use the computer the way *I* want them to use it! Many of your
users are telling you that this MATTERS to them, and your response is
essentially Let them eat cake!

Sure, those who are knowledgeable enough can change the button order,
but then you run into another issue, non-standard operation between
machines. Let me give you an example. When I got my Mac Mini, I was
coming from a Windows machine and wanted to use my Windows keyboard and
have it operate as it always had, so I went out and got a third-party
program (keyremap4mackbook) that let me switch keys to make them more
Windows-like. I'm happy, and certainly not frustrated by the keyboard
anymore at all (though I was very frustrated the first month, before I
found that program). Trouble is, my son also has a Mac, and he does not
remap his keys. So guess what happens when he tries to use mine? He
gets really frustrated because he's used to a keyboard that operates the
way Apple intended, which is non-standard from Windows.

Now you are going to have users that are used to the Mac OS X, and to
Windows, that will change the button order first thing. Then you will
have other users that either don't have the muscle memory issue, or
are too uninformed to switch the button order. So what happens when a
Linux admin who is used to the new order has to work on a system where
the user has changed the order (or vise versa)? Suddenly you are
raising the frustration level for thousands, maybe millions of users -
and for what? For no other reason than to prove that you are the big,
bad developers that can force that kind of change.

How would you like being forced to drive a car where the order of the
gas and brake pedals were reversed? What if there were no good reason
for the change, except some designer at the auto manufacturer wanted to
throw his weight around? How many people do you suppose would buy that
car? And, how many people do you suppose would badmouth that company
for making a ridiculous design change? Please think about it. Right now
relatively few people know about this — I've just stumbled across
comments in the last couple days, and I can already tell you that if you
think there's a firestorm of negative commentary now, just wait to you
actually come out with a release.

On the other hand, if I were behind a competing Linux distribution, I'd
definitely be encouraging you not to yield to all of us who are telling
you this is the wrong thing to do. I'd be telling you to stick to your
guns and damn the torpedoes — after all, what do users know, and what do
they matter anyway?

[Bug 507335] [NEW] flicker when playing tscc videos

2010-01-13 Thread fox
Public bug reported:

I'm using ubuntu 9.10, totem 2.28.2
I tried to play this sample video:
http://samples.mplayerhq.hu/V-codecs/tscc/oneminute.avi
It keeps flickering...
And when I'm trying to play some videos compressed by tscc, the color appears
to be the opposite.

[Bug 220427] Re: FIle Rename Error

2009-11-14 Thread Titan T. Fox
When I ripped my audio-cd collection to MP3 files, I noticed that the
ripping software did not use upper case. When I tried to rename ulrich
schnauss - goodbye.mp3 to Ulrich Schnauss - Goodbye.mp3 I get an
error message that the item could not be renamed. Apperently; Ubuntu
(and probably other distros for that matter) does not implement case
sensitivity. In Windows, this never was a problem. Sadly, I see this bug
has been reported more then 1 1/2 year ago and still no solution

The On Battery Power settings tab is never shown in the Power

[Bug 434739] [NEW] Slow speed music in Rhythmbox

2009-09-22 Thread Michael Fox
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: rhythmbox

This is with Ubuntu 9.10 alpha 6, operating as a virtual machine with
VirtualBox 3.0.6, running on an Intel imac (Snow Leopard). I noted the
problem in earlier alphas, and the slow sound is also manifest in the
Ubuntu startup sound after login. It is evident in any mp3 or mp4 I
play (with gstreamer additions). As the problem was reported to be
related to pulseaudio, I tried removing it but nothing changed. For
context, I can report that with the same alpha running on the same Mac
but in VMware Fusion, there is no sound at all when playing the same
mp's, but removing pulseaudio results in normal sound. Also for
context, with same version of VirtualBox and same mac, Ubuntu 9.04
doesn't have this problem; in fact I can't remember ever having this
problem as far back as Ubuntu 7.10.

+ Ubuntu startup sound after login, so I don't think it is specific to
+ rhythmbox. It is evident in any mp3 or mp4 I play (with gstreamer

[Bug 434739] Re: Slow speed sound in Rhythmbox

2009-09-22 Thread Michael Fox
I don't know if I'm the only one who has experienced this issue, but
there are a number of postings in the Ubuntu development forum about
sound problems in 9.10 alpha. I'm curious why you think this belongs
with Gnome? Could the problem not be with another sound module, or even
with VirtualBox, since it doesn't show up in VMware Fusion (with
pulseaudio removed) and all other factors the same?

[Bug 402286] [NEW] Shuffle Repeat, don't work in Rhythmbox 0.12.0

2009-07-21 Thread Chief Fox
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: rhythmbox

Rhythmbox 0.12.0

I'm not sure the source package, I'm guessing 'rhythmbox' package

1.Platform:
Linux Mint Gloria, distro based on version Ubuntu 9.04 (the Jaunty Jackalope).

2. apt-cache policy rhythmbox
rhythmbox:
  Installed: 0.12.0-0ubuntu4
  Candidate: 0.12.0-0ubuntu4
  Version table:
 *** 0.12.0-0ubuntu4 0
500 http://archive.ubuntu.com jaunty/main Packages
100 /var/lib/dpkg/status

3. I expect when using Shuffle to randomize playback, and when using
repeat button for that to repeat the playlist like it should.

4. Instead, when trying to use Shuffle button, or even Repeat button,
these two functions don't seem to be working properly. Not to mention
SML can't be used for Radio addresses.

ProblemType: Bug
Architecture: amd64
DistroRelease: LinuxMint 7
ExecutablePath: /usr/bin/rhythmbox
NonfreeKernelModules: nvidia
Package: rhythmbox 0.12.0-0ubuntu4
ProcEnviron:

 SHELL=/bin/bash
SourcePackage: rhythmbox
Uname: Linux 2.6.28-13-generic x86_64
UnreportableReason: This is not a genuine LinuxMint package

[Bug 402286] Re: Shuffle Repeat, don't work in Rhythmbox 0.12.0

2009-07-21 Thread Chief Fox
I attached the txt file you requested. I am not getting an error
message or bug necessarily, so maybe there is nothing to report to you.
But I am trying to explain in Rhythmbox, there are GUI buttons to
Shuffle which should play songs in a random order, but that does
nothing when you click on it, it still plays in the same order it is in
the playlist. And also the button to Repeat says it should Play
first song again after all songs are played, which it does nothing
also. Instead when the end of the playlist is reached, it just stops
and doesn't repeat any songs. Matter of fact after a song is played, it
automatically removes itself from my playlist, so it couldn't be
replayed because it was taken off the list. I checked in preferences
and there is no option to keep a track in playlist after being played,
it automatically removes it from the list.

[Bug 391875] [NEW] brasero and k3b projects are different!

2009-06-24 Thread Fox -ino
Public bug reported:

A project (data or audio or video), created with Brasero can not be open with
k3b.
The projects k3b and Brasero are both xml files, but they are different, you
can not have a single format?
Perhaps could be used too by InfraRecorder (software for windows
http://infrarecorder.org/): the file .IRP are xml files.

 Perhaps this might help

[Bug 386022] Re: No audio, no message, disabled volume control

2009-06-13 Thread David Fox
At this time Totem is working on my system. I believe that what happens
is that one of the many sound systems (pulse, esd, alsa, oss) gets
stuffed up, and totem stops working because it happens to use that
interface. It seems like Skype is what usually leads to the messed up
sound system. Rhythmbox is generally not affected. However, at times
the sound system gets further jammed so that the flash plugin in firefox
siezes up. So this is probably more of a design limitation in Totem
than a bug, but the error reporting in Totem could be improved.

I used to be a developer for a Linux distribution, and if I still were
I'd write a diagnostic application to show which sound systems were
installed on the system and test how each of them was working.

[Bug 386022] Re: No audio, no message, disabled volume control

2009-06-13 Thread David Fox
Totem could explain why it has disabled the volume control and suggest
where a user might look to resolve the issue. Whether that is a bug
depends on the project manager and the policies for pre-installed system
components. Given that the current state of the Linux audio system is
a turd pile in a cesspool on a cruftberg it couldn't hurt to be ready
for anything.

[Bug 386022] [NEW] No audio, no message, disabled volume control

2009-06-11 Thread David Fox
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: totem

There are clearly deep problems in the Jaunty audio system, I'm
reporting this as a symptom. At the moment, flash audio works fine, but
totem is showing the visualization and producing no sound. Totem has no
control to see what it thinks it is doing, what audio system it thinks
it is using, or anything about why it might not be working. There is
no error message about the situation, but it seems to know something is
up because the volume control is disabled.

[Bug 3498] Re: Curses box uses wrong characters when X cannot start

2007-06-27 Thread paul fox
i'm running feisty, and believe i have a simpler way of reproducing this
problem. i have never, to my knowledge, changed my local/language/etc.
(i'm in the US.)

boot the system. don't bother logging in to gdm.

switch directly to a console, with control-alt-F1.

log in, and run: dialog --msgbox foo 0 0

observe funky box-drawing characters: inverted L shapes, downarrows,
etc.

run sudo /etc/init.d/console_setup restart

rerun the dialog command and observe that the dialog box output is now
correct.

switch to the X11 vt, with alt-control-F7. don't log in.
switch back to the console screen with alt-control-F1.

observe that the dialog output (which should still be on the console)
has now changed to funky. re-run the dialog command. observe that
fresh painting still produces funky output.

manually, or automatically after the end of the previous track, the
selected track will not start playing, it will just stick at 0:00. As
reported above, seeking forward will start playback from the appropriate
point.

I've verified that this does not occur in Edgy (0.9.6-0ubuntu4) with the
same file.
