Cassandra project biweekly status update, 2021-08-31
Looks like it's time for an update - been a very busy couple of weeks. [Biweekly digest] There's quite a bit going on in the past two weeks - here's some shortcuts if you missed things: 0. A significant issue with Gossip on large clusters surfaced leading to the 4.0.1 test release: https://issues.apache.org/jira/browse/CASSANDRA-16877 1. The test artifact for Cassandra 4.0.1 is now available 2. Where should minor improvements land? In general what are our practices on what patch types land in which releases? https://lists.apache.org/thread.html/r05d0574cbfe11634abc5b297fbd41701e8444cabb2adf3002d31d15b%40%3Cdev.cassandra.apache.org%3E 3. How do we appropriately annotate Co-authors of work? Expect to see this show up in the contributing guidelines at some point soon. https://issues.apache.org/jira/browse/CASSANDRA-16879?focusedCommentId=17405281=com.atlassian.jira.plugin.system.issuetabpanels:comment-tabpanel#comment-17405281 4. Progress on CEP-13, denylisting partitions: https://lists.apache.org/thread.html/r1547c5f2fb8548e2f7dcbe1a26da8c2a95ebec81adeeb2ea0545924d%40%3Cdev.cassandra.apache.org%3E 5. A proposal to improve repair: https://lists.apache.org/thread.html/rd93e7184ded913a4e95eeaff32c22339d6c3d64685afe50c2593acde%40%3Cdev.cassandra.apache.org%3E 6. CEP-14: Vote (in progress) on Paxos improvements: https://lists.apache.org/thread.html/r3b10a8da8b6e4201b5ca0142b9a6a883f0991d504e867c7d4d128a85%40%3Cdev.cassandra.apache.org%3E 7. CEP-11: Vote passes for pluggable Memtable API 8. Java support for 11 made official, 17 support JIRA added: https://issues.apache.org/jira/browse/CASSANDRA-16895, https://lists.apache.org/thread.html/r06a4768bae215dc19469491a1faec64dd90e1c3d4d10ed34b85ba248%40%3Cdev.cassandra.apache.org%3E Discussion is still ongoing about CEP-13 (denylisting) and about David's proposed repair improvements - please chime in if you have some thoughts or experience there you'd like to share. [4.0.x and 4.x, by the numbers] 4.0.1: 14 issues closed in the last 2 weeks https://issues.apache.org/jira/secure/RapidBoard.jspa?rapidView=484=2175 We have 6 tickets in review stalled for 30d or more, and 3 tickets that are 40_Quality_Test tickets that need a reviewer: https://issues.apache.org/jira/secure/RapidBoard.jspa?rapidView=484=2171 8 tickets are flagged as in-progress but haven't seen updates in a month, 4 of which are 40_Quality_Test tickets. These might be good candidates to ping the assignee if you have cycles and interest to see if there's an opportunity for a handoff. To visualize momentum on the project, the cumulative flow diagram for 4.0.1 shows solid progress leading up to this initial .0.1 release: https://issues.apache.org/jira/secure/RapidBoard.jspa?rapidView=484=CASSANDRA=reporting=cumulativeFlowDiagram=1214=2116=2117=2118=2130=2133=2124=2127=2119=90 4.1: 8 issues closed in the last 2 weeks https://issues.apache.org/jira/secure/RapidBoard.jspa?rapidView=484=2175 We have 3 in review that are stalled for 30d, and *18* tickets on 4.x that need reviewers. If anyone has any review cycles please take a look at the list on that kanban. Visualization on 4.1.0 shows that, as one might expect, we are increasing our backlog and chipping away a tiny bit at broader work on the release. Given the velocity we have on 4.0.1, we can both expect to see this now and expect to see that change as the 4.0.x line matures. https://issues.apache.org/jira/secure/RapidBoard.jspa?rapidView=484=CASSANDRA=reporting=cumulativeFlowDiagram=1215=2116=2117=2118=2130=2133=2124=2127=2119=90 And "that's all" for this 2 weeks (busy times) - as always thanks everyone for the commitment and great work on the project, and excited to see what the next two weeks brings. ~Josh
RE: [DISCUSS] Java support roadmap
Good to hear that discussion moves forward in this regard! Java11 got quite some improvements in G1, especially for mixed collections. Are there any plans to allow 3.11 running with Java 11 as well? We are currently on Cassandra 3.11 and it’s the only Java process in our deployment stack which requires Java 8, thus we need to ship two JRE versions. Thanks, Thomas -Original Message- From: Ekaterina Dimitrova Sent: Donnerstag, 26. August 2021 16:35 To: dev@cassandra.apache.org Subject: [DISCUSS] Java support roadmap Hi everyone, I had a few people asking me recently about the Java 11 support. I came across this thread we had last year - https://nam02.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=https%3A%2F%2Flists.apache.org%2Fthread.html%2Fr38f6beaa22e247cb38212f476f5f79efdc6587f83af0397406c06d7c%2540%253Cdev.cassandra.apache.org%253Edata=04%7C01%7Cthomas.steinmaurer%40dynatrace.com%7Cb993ecb1e58f43bb64b908d9689f8db2%7C70ebe3a35b30435d9d677716d74ca190%7C1%7C0%7C637655856882625326%7CUnknown%7CTWFpbGZsb3d8eyJWIjoiMC4wLjAwMDAiLCJQIjoiV2luMzIiLCJBTiI6Ik1haWwiLCJXVCI6Mn0%3D%7C3000sdata=mtFTn45In8LwXVLRU%2FRG8k5q66E1Ut3iGtBw5%2FJiYt8%3Dreserved=0 . I think we have all tests running in both Java 8 and Java 11 for trunk and cassandra-4.0 in both Jenkins and CircleCI. Does anyone know about any Java 11 specific bugs discovered? I personally haven't heard of any in the past year. What is the plan of the community for moving Java 11 support out of experimental? Also, Java 17 LTS GA is planned for Sepember 2021 and I can try to test it with trunk. Any thoughts? Last but not least, do we know anyone running Java 11 in production? This thread was really opened as a stage to share our thoughts and hopefully come up with a plan as a community. Looking forward to seeing what people think here. Antora built cassandra-website about to be merged (Was: Switching the website to a temporary static html version of the new design)

Anyone interested in reviewing the work, now is your chance (I've been the only non-content reviewer so far, so it would be appreciated). These are the changes that have been getting deployed live since the GA release. • CASSANDRA-16066 - cassandra-website antora build system • CASSANDRA-16762 - cassandra-website new design ontop the new antora build The new in-tree docs are still getting squashed and rebase in the review process, but expected to get merged not long after, expect another mail for final review on it. - To unsubscribe, e-mail: dev-unsubscr...@cassandra.apache.org For additional commands, e-mail: dev-h...@cassandra.apache.org
