Just jumping on this thread... We can certainly open up more sections to have more resources added. Allow everyone to add and then have a couple of moderators. To start it only has a simple place to put sites up there that use CF, I think it could be useful. There's also a suggestion box! Like others here I've encountered resistence because finding CF developers isn't straight forward (it isn't something our Project Managers have heard of) they also like to know that there are other companies out there using it, a kind of safety in numbers thing.I've often had to compile lists of comapnies that use it and also demonstrate that there are enough CF dvelopers available to cover their needs once we've left.I think the usage of CF is grossly under-reported. I've seen quite a few installations at places that you wouldn't immediately think of as well as knowing about a number of Intranet apps that aren't exactly visible. All of this would benefit from a higher profile and generally greater awareness.MM in the UK provide precious little support outside of CFUGUK and not that much for CFUKUG. MM UK have had a poor reputation for years, you should have tried getting support out of them for Director (their flagship product) 5 years ago. Almost everything gets referred to the US as the guys here are all sales and not much else. What the solution to this is though I have no idea.Steve-- These lists are syncronised with the CFDeveloper forum at http://forum.cfdeveloper.co.uk/Archive: http://www.mail-archive.com/dev%40lists.cfdeveloper.co.uk/CFDeveloper Sponsors and contributors:-*Hosting and support provided by CFMXhosting.co.uk* :: *ActivePDF provided by activepdf.com**Forums provided by fusetalk.com* :: *ProWorkFlow provided by proworkflow.com**Tutorials provided by helmguru.com* :: *Lists hosted by gradwell.com*To unsubscribe, e-mail: [EMAIL PROTECTED]Join the UK's number one for the internetClick here
[ cf-dev ] OT: UKCFUG Newsletter : This month - Software Architecture for ColdFusion
~~ The United Kingdom ColdFusion User Group Newsletter, 11 March 2004 ~~ == Next Event - Thursday, 25 March 2004 == Software Architecture for ColdFusion -- For some, ColdFusion is a scripting language for easily creating websites. For others, it's much more than this... it's a true software development platform. The approach to software development is the most noticeable difference between so called gurus and everyone else. The lack of development done right is also one of the primary reasons that CFML development and developers are often times not taken as seriously as other more traditional programming languages. In this presentation, Simon will examine software architecture, will look at some of the ways that traditional software development tools and methodologies apply to ColdFusion Application Development and will also talk about practical best practices for architecting applications with CFML. Topics include an overview of software architecture and why it is so important, diagramming applications, design patterns, choosing the right model for your applications, and what all this means when translated to a CFML implementation. Will hopefully be useful for people that don't like discussion lists. http://cfdeveloper.co.uk/fusetalk/forum/index.cfm?forumID=1 We have quite a membership going now. I don't know how many we have on this list, but we have over 2000 members using the free cfdeveloper e-mail, over 800 members using the free developer hosting. I have decided to restrict the free hosting to UK people only though as I was having far too many foreigners abusing it. [ cf-dev ] CVSNT
Hi everyone, Been trying to get CVSNT up and running for the last couple of days. It's installed and I've imported repositories. However, when it comes to setting up the user management I'm having a complete nightmare. I don't want to use the NT user list. I want to use a user list managed by CVSNT. I presume from the dreadful docs that I need to use either pserver or sserver. It seems sserver is more secure. My problem now is how the f*ck to get the users set up. I am having NO joy! If anyone has any experience please email me off list as I'd really like to have some help (ideally a walk through). Thanks! After lots of false starts and months of hacking around with code, the new UKCFUG site is live! We are still working on some of the features but we wanted to get it out there so you could give us feedback whilst we are still finalising the code. There were a few things that we decided would be a better change in the long run but would have a small amount of pain up front. The big one being the changes to the FuseTalk forums. They were a very hacked version 2 of the source and when we looked at the amount of work required to migrate the content to version 4, we decided it just was not worth it. So we installed a clean set of forums and have not really needed to change the code at all! The other big change was the implementation of a true CMS behind the site. We have used the Farcry content managment system to build the core of the site and hopefully allowing us to get more people adding more content to the site more often! The last change is that we have teamed up with the London MMUG to have a common codebase between the two usergroups. There are a few great benifits to this, mainly to do with reduced development time for any new features (more developers to use!) Anyway, that is enough of that, jump into the forums and let us know what you think! more http://www.ukcfug.org/index.cfm?objectid=A411A60C-50DA-4D01-87400B3327202A97 == Sponsor Spotlight == Prismix Ltd London based Internet Architects Prismix specialise in the provision of content managed Rich Internet Solutions and also offer comprehensive Spectra and ColdFusion consultancy services. http://www.ukcfug.org/index.cfm?objectid=7BC3FC83-50DA-4D01-8798EA3883C6D0E8 Highlander PLC Highlander PLC is the UK's leading Macromedia partner, offering a range of services including training, mentoring and consultancy. http://www.ukcfug.org/index.cfm?objectid=95B2D214-50DA-4D01-87ED9D38BB1DC3B3 London Web Communications Ltd For all your ColdFusion needs! http://www.ukcfug.org/index.cfm?objectid=95B3B9A5-50DA-4D01-87FBD4A93D54C44B ~~ Date Created: 22 September 2003 Copyright C 2003 UK ColdFusion User Group Unsubscribe: [EMAIL

Secure webservices?! -Original Message- From: Paul Johnston [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: Tuesday, September 16, 2003 4:30 PM To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: RE: [ cf-dev ] Stopping 'db scrapes' Flash can decrypt data... Afaik so encrypt the data in an xml packet... And make the key a rotating key (something based on date or something like that) and you have automatically created a difficult thing to scrape (although not impossible but that is the nature of IT... Everything can be reverse engineered unless you use one-way encryption algorithms but that's useless here because you need to get the data back!) Again, cease and desist letter MUST be the first port of call to get the legal ball rolling... Paul -Original Message- From: Peter Harrison [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: 16 September 2003 15:46 To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: RE: [ cf-dev ] Stopping 'db scrapes' The Flash front end would have to get its data via some URL, yes? Sniff the URL, ignore the Flash front end and use your own. The cease and desist letter sounds like JUSTICE! to me. *the mob grows hungry* - Peter -Original Message- From: Paul Johnston [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: 16 September 2003 11:01 To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: RE: [ cf-dev ] Stopping 'db scrapes' And they just simulate registrations... It's pretty easy to get around when a company is using a program to simulate clicks... However, there is one possibility... How about sending the data as XML and having an external XSL stylesheet, and if the user is using IE 6 then you can do the HTML creation on the client side... That way the java applet MAY get confused (it may not take long to get round though)... Other than that, the simulated HTTP GET/POST statements must be in some common format? Maybe check for that common format in some way and if it appears to be from the applet, then dump the request...? This can of course be got around! I still think creating a Flash front end for the search results may provide you with more protection (although it means flash being used on the site which may or may not be worthwhile)... That way a scrape is a lot more difficult. Erm... Cease and Desist letter at same time would probably be effective too! Btw... It is very easy to write a flash checker to see if a user has flash installed and most do. That way you would have two versions of the relevant bits (ie search results and house details for example) BUT you would stop plain old HTML scraping occurring. Paul Oih dear. That's very sneaky. Perhaps a registration to access the site is required then -Original Message- From: Rich Wild [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: 16 September 2003 10:30 To: '[EMAIL PROTECTED]' Subject: RE: [ cf-dev ] Stopping 'db scrapes' Not if the URL is not on any of the pages. What I'm saying is that if a page is available to a normal user of Peter's site with a normal browser without having to sign in, then the competitor will be able to get that page also, no matter what you do. They're not linking to any pages, they're using a java applet to simulate a user clicking and submitting search forms and then they're scraping the results. Hence if a user can see the data, then so can their java applet, no matter what you put in the url. -- ** Archive: http://www.mail-archive.com/dev% 40lists.cfdeveloper.co.uk/ To unsubscribe, e-mail: [EMAIL PROTECTED] For additional commands, e-mail: [EMAIL PROTECTED] For human help, e-mail: [EMAIL PROTECTED] -- ** Archive: http://www.mail-archive.com/dev% 40lists.cfdeveloper.co.uk/ To unsubscribe, e-mail: [EMAIL PROTECTED] For additional commands, e-mail: [EMAIL PROTECTED] For human help, e-mail: [EMAIL PROTECTED] -- ** Archive: http://www.mail-archive.com/dev% 40lists.cfdeveloper.co.uk/ To unsubscribe, e-mail: [EMAIL PROTECTED] For additional commands, e-mail: [EMAIL PROTECTED] For human help, e-mail: [EMAIL PROTECTED] -- ** Archive: http://www.mail-archive.com/dev% 40lists.cfdeveloper.co.uk/ To unsubscribe, e-mail: [EMAIL PROTECTED] For additional commands, e-mail: [EMAIL PROTECTED] For human help, e-mail: [EMAIL PROTECTED] -- ** Archive: http://www.mail-archive.com/dev%40lists.cfdeveloper.co.uk/ To unsubscribe, e-mail: [EMAIL PROTECTED] For additional commands, e-mail: [EMAIL PROTECTED] For human help, e-mail: [EMAIL PROTECTED] -- ** Archive: http://www.mail-archive.com/dev%40lists.cfdeveloper.co.uk/ To unsubscribe, e-mail: [EMAIL PROTECTED] For additional commands, e-mail: [EMAIL PROTECTED] For human help, e-mail: [EMAIL PROTECTED]

The installation instructions for setting up Tortoise are quite easy to follow ( I think its an executable ) also you may need a diff program that you can use when you want to merge or simply compare files. Hi Niklas Have had this before with SQL server binary objects, so it's probably the same thing This is on macromedia.com --- In ColdFusion MX, binary strings are represented as byte arrays (assign-by-reference), so you can manipulate them using standard CFML array logic. RE: [ cf-dev ] CFMX MySQL - Dates becoming binary objects!!!!!
From some more research, it seems that it happens only when I use MySQL date functions on a date column. If I just query the columns directly without any functions it returns it correctly. Weird. Still - if anyone knows the fix...that'd be great. -Original Message- From: Niklas Richardson [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: Monday, September 01, 2003 1:10 PM To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: [ cf-dev ] CFMX MySQL - Dates becoming binary objects! Hi Simon, After CF_Europe we all decided to have a break for the summer. We didn't specifically state we were having a break, but I think we the stress of organising the conference we decided to have one. In any case the next meeting is on the website http://www.ukcfug.org/. It will all be about CFMX 6.1 (RedSky). So check it out. There was a UKCFUG social last night but for some reason the emails didn't go out - weird. Simon, sorry I haven't gotten back to you, I have been swamped, but I was planning it for my holiday next week! BTW - the new UKCFUG website should be up soon. RE: [ cf-dev ] PayPal question...
Am I right in thinking that PayPal doesn't allow you to credit a business bank account directly with funds and that instead you have to give them the details of a credit card and they transfer funds from whatever's accumulated in your PayPal account to that card? No - but you have to do it manually. The client doesn't have a business CC and don't think they want to have to get one, just to use PayPal. If so, it's one less PSP to consider. RE: [ cf-dev ] cf_Europe
Thanks guys for all the comments and feedback. Glad to hear that all the hard work was well worth it! :) Here's to next year and MX_Europe!! -Original Message- From: Douglas Humphris [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: Monday, June 02, 2003 10:25 AM To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: RE: [ cf-dev ] cf_Europe CF_EUROPE was well worth the trip from Edinburgh, thanks guys. There was a good selection of presentations to attend, but I also thought there could have been more pure CF stuff like the CFCONTENT tricks. I agree with Allan, MX_EUROPE would be a more appropriate title. Is there an equivalent Flash conf. that it could be merged with? Then there wouldn't be a need to fill the CF agenda with so much Flash stuff. Looking forward to next year. One of the ones that was a little heavy, was the maps and gis in flash... he ran out of time on that, and so I think I missed the point of the presentation... still a little confused, but gained some ideas for other things from this. Also, Al Manning's cf-content tips was pretty good... it again gave me some nice ideas about doing things another way, but this would be dependent on the client. Another interesting one was the one on developing for PDA/Smartphones... not sure if I'll ever do anything like this in the future, but a good grounding if I ever need to! An idea I really did like though was Philipp Cielen's little 'entire online store in a flash banner' app. Neat thinking. There should have been a LOT more CFC talks focusing on why we should be using CFCs, as most of the discussions about them went along the lines of Here they are in CFMX, start using them cos they're great, and cos then you can integrate flash really easily. I would have liked to have seen more discussion about the intricacies of CFCs and CFIMPORT etc... Having said that, Benoit's talk on MVC and Simon Slooten's CFCs *were* great talks, as was Simon Horwith's Data File Access API. Charlie's talk on CFMX Hidden Gems should really have been Go read my weblog, and here's a few hidden books of mine you should buy, and by the way, have you heard about my new book?. I expected to see him busking for a few extra coins on my way to the station. Its a pity that Aral Balkan's talk on Firefly was kind of obliterated by Ben Forta's keynote. Its also a pity that Ektron chose to try and sell us their ASP written CMS products at a CF conference. But that aside, it was great to meet up with people and put names to faces, and generally swap coding tips and experiences etc. Invaluable really. Hi Damian, There is a multipart custom tag for CF5, I had to write a CFMX version as I didn't realise you could do it so easily with the code you did! Dear All, Well, after 6 or 7 years of Cold Fusion, I'm going to be putting the whole lot on hold and going off to complete my PhD - using Java - apart from the occaisonal contract or two. It certainly has been interesting - from the time when I got a tech support woman phoning me up from Allaire in America to help me with a problem with the 30 day demo of Cold Fusion 1.5, right through to trying to get my head around Web Services in CFMX (still haven't managed it, and by the sounds of it few people have). Fundimentally not much has changed since when I started - except that now there is more of it. More to learn. More to look at and think - I will never need to use that. More to find and think - that makes things so much easier. How did I do without that. More to think - aarrrh. I've just written code to do that for the previous version of Cold Fusion. Martin L. Yeah, that's probably true for CFMX as the first time it's having to compile it. Then maybe what's happening is that now it's compiled it is running SO fast it comes up as 0! Sorry I didn't see this email earlier. Also, what you need to do is reboot the server after making changes to the internal website (in the XML file) as stopping and starting the CFMX service doesn't stop the JRUN service - i.e. bug. Apparently you have to modify an XML file... here's the instructions for anyone else who's wondering (ripped from the MM site): 1. Stop the ColdFusion MX Application Server service using the Services Control Panel. 2. Back up the existing cf_root\runtime\servers\default\SERVER-INF\jrun.xml. Where cf_root is your ColdFusion MX installation root. 3. Edit the WebService section of jrun.xml so that the deactivated attribute is True: attribute name=deactivatedtrue/attribute 4. Edit the ProxyService section of jrun.xml so that the cacheRealPath attribute is False: attribute name=cacheRealPathfalse/attribute 5. Save jrun.xml and restart the ColdFusion MX Application Server service. RE: [ cf-dev ] free Zip tags
Tried that. Proved to be a bit of a nightmare. When you do a CFEXECUTE, it runs the prog under C:\WINNT\SYSTEM32. If you've locked down your server properly (or improperly depending on how you look at it) it won't run. But then again, I could have screwed up the permissions for CF5 and Windoze somewhere heh -Original Message- From: Garry Mills [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]] Sent: Monday, December 16, 2002 5:33 PM To: '[EMAIL PROTECTED]' Subject: RE: [ cf-dev ] free Zip tags Does it have to be a tag, what's wrong with executing pkzip / pkunzip? Well, If it was a nice custom tag that was an interface to the java classes for zipping, i think it would be much cleaner than using CFEXECUTE. Obviously for CFMX! RE: [ cf-dev ] review: Macromedia Reality ColdFusion MX / J2EE
Justin, Mind if I post this to the website? Cheers Niklas -Original Message- From: Justin MacCarthy [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]] Sent: Tuesday, November 19, 2002 3:30 PM To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: [ cf-dev ] review: Macromedia Reality ColdFusion MX / J2EE Here is a quick review of my initial reading of Macromedia Reality ColdFusion MX / J2EE by Ben Forta / Drew Falkman / Kristian Cibulskis / Bonnie Plottner. http://www.forta.com/books/0321129482 Any mistakes, omissions, mail me, I'll fix 'em. What is it ? This book explores the use of J2EE and ColdFusion MX. It describes the use of EJB, JMS, Java Classes, XML with MX. This book is not for beginners, a decent understanding of J2EE, CFML, SQL, XML etc is required. OO would be helpful, but this book is a gentle introduction in itself. Details The applications described in this book are pretty good. Of course they are limited by size, to be an effective example, but the are large enough to explore ideas and concepts, and to explore various features of MX and J2EE. The example applications are a Portal, an E-Commerce app, a B2b project , a CRM system and a Content site. Each example project is spilt into 5 sections: Product requirements Initial Thoughts Development Solution Delivery Each of these sections, explores the developers process, at each stage of the application design. This is done though the eyes of the various developers working on the application, and in that way explores the different layers involved, the presentation layer, the business layers and the Data layer. Interesting things discussed in this way: The Development process Patterns UML Using the Jakarta Project and other open source projects TAGlibs JMS Instant Messaging via Jabber EJB and eb-sql (even CMP, BMP MDB) CFC's Deployment of mixed apps. The title is Reality CFMX, and this book lives up to the title. The applications described present the same issues that real web developers deal with, day to day. Often books use example applications that suit the language/platform that the book is targeting. Of course in the real world, life is not so easy. For example, in chapter 3, on building a B2B application, they use EJB's to encapsulate some business logic. However, instead of just blindly using EJB's for everything, they discuss a weakness of EJB's; the speed of access to tabular, read-only data. So they decide to bypass the EJB for read-only operations, and instead encapsulate those in a CFC. This is kind of solution used in the real world. It's refreshing to see it in a book. What I didn't like. This is the first Macromedia book I've read. It's the first Ben Forta book I've bought since the CF Version 2 Construction Kit. The complaints I have are only about the layout/ style. I didn't like the recreation of the emails and memos, in a style to look like emails memos, complete with notepad lines, tilted text etc. I'm more of an O'Reilly type guy myself. A couple of other things: No appendices - It would have been great to include a section with book recommendations, and resources. Especially, developer versions or free J2EE servers (http://java.sun.com), jBoss (www.jBoss.org), OpenJMS (http://openjms.exolab.org/), Tomcat (http://jakarta.apache.org/tomcat/) etc.. A section on setting up your development machine, installing MX the J2EE software, etc. would be helpful too. No labels on the code snippets - e.g. code 1.2 etc.. No mention of testing methods - (well ok a tiny bit about Road Testing the app) . - I can't blame the guys too much for this, as there are not too many tools available in this area for CF, but maybe a little about using Cactus (http://Jakarta.apache.org/cactus) /JUnit (http://www.jUnit.org) to test EJBs and possibly using ANT (http://jakarta.apache.org/ant/index.html) for automating the packaging and deployment. Conclusion --- I liked this book. It does a good job of exploring the use of Java with CFML. It would be a valuable addition to your (more experienced) developers bookshelves, and might inspire them to explore Java from MX, and increase their skills. http://www.forta.com/books/0321129482 Well done guys! [ cf-dev ] UKCFUG Newsletter Format
Hi everyone, I am keen to hear from you about whether you prefer to receive UKCFUG newsletters in either HTML or plaintext format. Currently we have a multipart newsletter, however some members email systems are not letting it through their firewalls. I am considering changing it so by default everyone receives the HTML version, and if they want you can log in and change it to the plain text format if you don't like the HTML one.
