Re: [ cf-dev ] WYSIWYG editors - XHTML validation
Bloody great Taz! Frame that beermat ;) One thing I'd look at adding would be close slashes on br hr and img d Yup. As I said.. this is the first version, so at the moment it's just a very basic validator. It's sort of a way of making a client a little happier about WYSIWYG code. The ultimate solution is either to find a better editor, or to create a rather large custom tag. The hard part is that ColdFusion is a crap language to use for parsing... it's just too linear. Prolog would probably be better for this sort of thing, but who wants to spend the rest of their working lives trying to get a prolog com object working from CF? Ha ha hahhaha! I'd rather cut my head off. Re: [ cf-dev ] WYSIWYG editors - XHTML validation
nice one. I've been extending your CleanMSText custom tag a little bit, e.g. replacing the deprecated u with the equivalent in CSS, and a few extra MS Word nonsense html tags you'd missed out. Still want to do more on this, e.g. replacing all use of font tags, but that'll be more work to parse it. That's the trouble with MS crap... you can never find out what other attributes it puts in until somebody's tried every possible combination of objects in a document. Bearing in mind some of the document formats I've seen people produce in MS, I'd say that clients are better testers than me. Re: [ cf-dev ] Website accessibility in the UK
well, the DRC _is_ the enforcenment body, and if you read the foreword of the report Bert Massie, the (disabled) Chair, states quite clearly that they will be launching actions against companies, or supporting disabled people who want to do so. They have the power to close web sites down if, after advising about the issues, the site takes no notice/action. I'll apologise in advance for being politically incorrect, but I can't fathom why it should be illegal for a site not to be accessible to every user. Effectively it's more of a problem for the company involved, who may be losing a potential revenue stream, but essentially it's up to them who they target their advertising and services at. Okay, so you could call it discrimination, but then by the same token you could argue that book publishers are being discriminatory by not making all of their books available in Braille or audio. In fact, why aren't we getting sued for not translating sites into 60 different languages? Hey, that's xenophobia isn't it? Chinese sites for all! 2 billion people can't all be wrong. Don't get me wrong, I'm all for accessibility for all. And since nearly all of my work has to conform to RNIB guidelines (among others), I tend to build in accessibility from the start. But I get the feeling that all this political correctness is getting just a little out of hand. I agree that sites should be accessible to as many people as possible. But if the Government want to get the electronic UK on the map as the best in the world, why don't they offer incentives to businesses to implement these things, instead of the draconian attitude of biting off the hand that's paying taxes. Oh crap! I've gone all serious again. Nob Giblets! Re: [ cf-dev ] The state of ColdFusion in the UK
I mean we have a very few user groups (which I am not knocking). The main reason why we have few user groups is apathy. Stephen and I put a fair amount of our time and money into the Northern CFUG, and I think the maximum attendance at any meeting was 20... and that was probably because we were at Freeserve's (ahem, or Wanadoo or whatever) office and we were offering about 5 books and a licensed copy of CFMX. People just weren't interested... especially if it meant getting on a train to go to the meeting. This is obviously not a gripe against the user group's members. It costs money to get to meetings, and it's a night away from home where you could be watching the footie or something. But all credit to those who did turn up, sponsor meetings, share their offices, time, etc. I agree with you about MM though. They don't exactly have their finger on the pulse when it comes to the User Groups. Just look at the UK groups page on their site: http://tinyurl.com/38zko The Northern CFUG shut down last summer, and it's still advertised. We used to have to harass them for days to get them to advertise a meeting on their mailing list. But then the UK MM office is quite small, and I suspect that they were busy with everything else. Still... Blimey! Have I just replied to a post on the dev list? What is the world coming to? I'd better get back to talking crap on chat. Re: [ cf-dev ] The state of ColdFusion in the UK
What is it exactly that Microsoft do and MM don't? Well not a great deal really. But ASP is integrated in IIS, so it comes free on every windows server. Similarly, most hosting companies offer ASP and PHP because they don't have to pay for extra licences, and the same goes for ISPs and their RAQ dedicated servers. ASP and PHP have always been up there because they're free (sort of), and CF still suffers from the old pricing structure. It used to cost a lot more for a ColdFusion license, so a lot of people steered clear. What some realised is that they could actually save that and more through the shorter development time. That brings me to another point. I constantly hear the phrase ColdFusion is easier to code than ASP and PHP. It's not. Well, not in the way that most people think. In my opinion, programming is not easy in any language. Good programming that is. Some languages make code easier to pick up and easier to maintain, ColdFusion being one of them. For example: cfset variables.MyVariable = 1 It's pretty obvious to any programmer that this is setting a variable. But to a non-programmer... nothing. Unfortunately Allaire and Macromedia both ran the campaign by telling web designers and html writers that CF was easy to learn. Complete crap. The first thing a non-programmer should do when learning a programming language, is to pick up a book on Software Engineering and read it until bored to death. Then, and only then, should a person start designing a programme, nevermind coding. But that didn't happen. What did happen was that several thousand non-programmers picked up a free copy of CF lite (or whatever it was called), and started creating horrendous applications with a mixture of Ultradev and desperate hacking. They contracted themselves out as developers and charged a lot of money. This all happened around the same time as the dot com crash. Consequently the ASP, PHP and even the Perl developers, they all got hot under the collar and spent their time telling clients to avoid CF like the plague. A thing like that can stick with a product for a long time. I'm not saying that's the reason why ColdFusion has never been the top runner over here, but it certainly has some effect. Looks like my time's up on this one. Better get back on me head and continue working. I'd probably try storing the IDs of the viewed messages as a list in the client cookie. Re: [ cf-dev ] OT: preventing hotlinking
I've just thought of an interesting solution to this problem, that doesn't require more 3rd party plugins for IIS. Assuming your application is CF throughout, you could store the name of the images directory in a database and pick this up for output in any links. Then you could set up a session to change the name of the images directory every day. This wouldn't physically stop people from linking to images, but it would make their links redundant every day. Re: [ cf-dev ] FW: Newsflash - IR35 to be abolished in April and replaced by IR591
I591 is going to catch any company with less that 5 directors and I suppose that means the corner paper shop too (IANAA). Any limited company though, so sole traders will still be using self assessment. I don't mind paying some Tax through dividends, but hopefully the Inland Revenue understand that some of us don't always pay ourselves this way (minimum wage + dividends) just to reap the tax benefits. One of the main reasons I do this is because my business can sometimes go for 2 or 3 months without seeing any income, mainly due (fingers crossed) to long projects that get invoiced when the work is completed. Therefore it would be impossible to pay myself a set salary on a monthly basis because it might not be in the bank. As I said, I don't mind paying Tax on dividends, as long as they don't over tax low-income companies to the point that it becomes impossible to run. The government increasingly seem to be all too happy to make us, the small businesses, pay more to make up for the fact that they can't get the money out of the fat cats (with their offshore bank accounts and tax havens). It is quite common for the Revenue to get tough with somebody who's having trouble paying the bills, but if somebody owes them a couple of million... ah well, let it go!. You have to wonder why a so-called Labour government keep trying to make the rich richer, and the rest of us poorer. Let's hope they get this one right. Re: [ cf-dev ] CFMX admin password
you can set the password using a CF template, so this template must encrypt the plain text using CF code. So, presumably you could obtain the seed value for the encryption if you could just decrypt the template which encrypts the plain text password and adds it to the registry. Then you'd probably be able to use the decrypt() function to get the plain text from your encrypted password :) Try saying that when you're drunk. [ cf-dev ] AbleCommerce etc.
The arsetwigs at AbleCommerce have stopped selling previous versions, which is a little short sighted if you ask me. So its CFMX or nothing. I sent them an email a couple of weeks ago asking if I could get hold of version 3, but in the interest of good customer relationships management, they've not bothered to even reply. Does anyone have a demo copy of AbleCommerce 3, or perhaps a suggestion of what other decent CF shop packages there are? Basically my mate has finally decided to shift his shop over to CF, after running on actinic for 3 years. Actinic's great, but it won't allow for integrating with online credit companies like able2buy. The only other option open is the Roll your own variety, but the budget's not really there for it. Re: [ cf-dev ] Page Parameters
My preferred version of doing this (when a project requires it) is this: 1. Use fusebox (That's Extended FB2 Taz edition) 2. If the session expires, copy the requested Fuseaction into a variable called Attributes.RequestedFuseaction 3. Copy all Attributes scope variables (form and url) into the login form as hidden fields, including Attributes.RequestedFuseaction, but obviously not Attributes.Fuseaction 4. If a file has been submitted, upload it to a temporary folder and set a file flag in the form, which includes a reference to the filename. 5. The form is then submitted with the login info. If the login fails, a check for the existence of Attributes.RequestedFuseaction so that you don't overwrite it with the login fuseaction. All the form/url data re-populates the form. 6. When the login is complete, instead of going to a default welcome page, grab the Attributes.RequestedFuseaction and pass the information to the required circuit. The only major problem is file uploads. Your file ops must be able to check for the existence of either a file upload field, or a temporary file flag and filename. Re: [ cf-dev ] Macs and formfields
Thank you, I thought that would be the case. Does anyone know why this happens? 'Why' is beyond me, but how to avoid problems is easy. If you've got a file upload field its best to put it at the end of the form (or at least the last field before the buttons). If the form is used for editing content, you might not always have a file uploaded. You need to create a javascript function that disables the field on submit if it's empty. This is especially important if you have multiple file upload fields. so your javascript for the onsubmit will be something like: if(document.myform.myupload.value == '') { document.myform.myupload.disabled = 1; } Taz -- ** Archive: http://www.mail-archive.com/dev%40lists.cfdeveloper.co.uk/ To unsubscribe, e-mail: [EMAIL PROTECTED] For additional commands, e-mail: [EMAIL PROTECTED] For human help, e-mail: [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Re: [ cf-dev ] Spot the problem - IN()
I can redeem myself (god how embarrasing - must get more sleep) by saying that my last bit still stands - don't understand why you're using all that loop gubbins when you could just use: I assumed that it was because journalid was of type char or varchar instead of a numeric data type -- ** Archive: http://www.mail-archive.com/dev%40lists.cfdeveloper.co.uk/ To unsubscribe, e-mail: [EMAIL PROTECTED] For additional commands, e-mail: [EMAIL PROTECTED] For human help, e-mail: [EMAIL PROTECTED]
Re: [ cf-dev ] Spot the problem - IN()
Dave, the problem you were having (I should think) was that your clause for putting in a comma was if: Current Element != Last element of the list But if you have another element in the list which has the same value as the last one, it will fall over. Thats why I posted the code that looks at the element index, not the value it points to in the list. You want to put a comma in front of each value if its not the first time it loops through. Not very well explained I know, but you'll see what I mean. Re: [ cf-dev ] Spot the problem - IN()
seeing as you're using UUIDs, just qualify them first: Oh yeah, that's way better! Re: [ cf-dev ] CSS for form tag
Wrong. The space does appear, it's just not next to the button. It shouldn't do... could you show us an example? Re: [ cf-dev ] Help on Verity
But this fails. Any ideas? I would first try running it on a local drive to make sure its not a problem with the indexing. If that works, you've probably got a permissions problem with accessing the mapped drive. Make sure that the CFServer user account has permissions to access the drive Taz -- ** Archive: http://www.mail-archive.com/dev%40lists.cfdeveloper.co.uk/ To unsubscribe, e-mail: [EMAIL PROTECTED] For additional commands, e-mail: [EMAIL PROTECTED] For human help, e-mail: [EMAIL PROTECTED]
Re: [ cf-dev ] Help on Verity
This only happens if I try and use a mapped drive rather than a physical drive. Have you tried a cffile operation over the mapped drive? Re: [ cf-dev ] Character encoding?
I have discovered that the text was pasted into the database from Word and therefore has lots of these weird characters...urg! Thanks, Word! They're called Smart Quotes, which goes along with Smart Tags Two oxymorons for the day.
