They are very intermittent, sometimes working, more frequently timing out.  Out of
curiosity, please try a traceroute to forum.openoffice.org, which might show up if there was
a connection problem on the route(s) to that site.

It was reported that the server had been restarted, so the problem may be

Finally opened after very long wait. Pages extremely slow loading or get message the server

In 4.1.3 and 4.1.4 Release Notes that item was the main level item i.e. not
under "Apache OpenOffice 4.1.x will be flagged [...]".
It was demoted as of Release Notes for AOO 4.1.5.

In 4.1.8 Release Notes (Dutch) one can see it as the main level item.

I am macOS-illiterate. Will "a known bug in Oracle Java installations of
Apache OpenOffice on OSX [...]"
be a reason for the Gatekeeper to flag AOO? If the answer is NO, then the
item in question should be promoted.

The Java issue is not related to Gatekeeper. It is a separate issue and should be at the main
level.

Yes. It is English (Canada).

In Preferences/Language Settings/Language: Language of/Locale setting: Default

In AOO 4.1.7 I have Hunspell SpellChecker & Mac OS X Spell Checker listed

If I copy my user profile from AOO 4.1.7 into AOO Dev-m2 I still have no spell
checkers. listed.

I'm not into the OpenOffice code, but am asking questions answers to which I
have learned from Forum are helpful. I presume hunspell is (or ought) be
installed on your Mac. in linux,
"locate hunspell" in a terminal shows its locations. Can you confirm, with a
Mac equivalent command, if hunspell is installed on your Mac, and its locations? The
problem is possibly the incorrect configuration of a file path in the code.

Since spellcheck works in AOO 4.1.7 that word indicate that hunspell is installed on my Mac. I
checked in terminal and confirmed it is installed.

I also tried Dev-m2 on my production MacBook Pro running macOS 10.14 Mojave. (I have macOS
10.15 Catalina on this MacBook Pro) to check if it was a compatibility problem with the latest
macOS.

From a purely linguistic perspective: is wording "reads all major

- it reads files of all major competitors

Apache OpenOffice DOES NOT read Apple Pages, Keynote, or Numbers files.

You do not need any .dmg files providing you properly installed Apache
OpenOffice.

Check in your Applications folder for OpenOffice.org

Tested using OpenOffice 4.1.5 & macOS 10.13.3 High Sierra

A bug has been reported on the Italian mailing list but I'd like to get verification by a Mac
user.

To reproduce:

1. Be on High Sierra (but it would be useful to check with other versions too; the reporter
says everything worked correctly, with OpenOffice 4.1.5, before upgrading to High Sierra).
OpenOffice 4.1.5.

2. Create a new text document, write "Test", save as "Microsoft Word 2003 XML (.xml)" - a
rather rare format, but we officially support it.

3. One should be able to save the document and reopen it correctly. The reporter says he gets
"Write error" on High Sierra with 4.1.5 (and the file is not saved), while his previous macOS
version worked fine with 4.1.5.

Note: .odt and .doc work well; only that specific format is problematic. Also note: I
couldn't reproduce the issue on Linux.

The bug would not be particularly important in itself, but the many build attempts with XML
libraries on macOS make this worth checking.

Regards,
  Andrea.

Re: AOO 4.2.0-dev builds

Installed 4.2.0-dev on my 2015 MacBook Pro, macOS Sierra 10.12.6, Java
jdk-9.0.1. No legacy Java.
Database works fine.

On my 2013 MacBook Pro macOS High Sierra 10.13.1, Java jdk-9.0.1, AOO 4.2.0-dev the database is
still working after uninstalling legacy Java 6.

I have not clue why database wouldn't open with 4.2.0-dev until I installed Apple's legacy Java
6. Nothing else was changed.

Some strange anomaly on instalation.

Anyways, I have no problems with 4.2.0-dev  on two different computers.

Regarding 4.2.0. What are the new features and is everything being worked

I was happy that I could build 4.2 recently on Linux-32 without issue! WOO
HOO!

Re "new" features...there is quite a backlog of translations, including
items in the Help section that are now about 3 years in arrears until 4.2.0
is out. Likely many other improvements including the recent DB access
glitch that Damjen fixed. Timewise, I think there is a bit more to do for
4.2.0 but probably not much.

Like others, I'd like to see AOO move on to 4.2.0 rather than 4.1.5.

There are serious regressions in 4.1.4 for Macs. The fix needs to be released now, not wait
until 4.2.0

I can't answer with any certainty for Mac, but my understanding, based on

macOS is derived from Unix. Many, not all commands are similar to Linux

Open it and type "openoffice4" (no quotes). OO should then open and run and
give some possibly helpful diagnostics about what it is not finding, or what has

I had hacked the bootstraprc file to use a separate, but previously used profile that I have

message. Both had worked with previous release versions.

I just hacked the bootstraprc file again to use a totally new profile. A new writer document
opens without an error message.
An older document opens with the error message, then opens after clicking OK button. Tested
with several existing documents.
Existing spreadsheets open okay. Hadn't tested them before since I only use AOO to open

It is just a workaround. There have been several reports of this problem on the current (late
2015) iMacs. Changing the colour profile for the display to a non standard one seems to fix the
problem. However this could change the colour balance on the display. I don't have an iMac and
the problem doesn't occur on my 13" MacBook Pro. I haven't updated my 15" MacBook Pro to macOS
Sierra yet. AOO 4.1 3 has no problems on OS X ElCapitan.

The current 27" iMac has a 5K display. The 21" has a 4K display. I wouldn't want to use a
generic colour profile if I owned one.

We have separate a service for the Apple app store (and another for the Google

Is there a signing service for downloads from the OpenOffice website?
Signing service for the Apple app store is kind-of pointless to this point in time since Apache

As I understand it, the reason is lack of testing and, as explained by
Ariel, system changes in the latest 2 versions of MacOS X that require
build changes for this to work. But testing is easy: just download a
4.1.3-RC1 build from
https://dist.apache.org/repos/dist/dev/openoffice/4.1.3-rc1/ and give
your feedback in the issue. If this doesn't make it for 4.1.3, it is a
clear candidate for 4.1.4 (which is surely not going to take one year!).

Regards,
  Andrea.

Base works in 4.1.3-RC1. I worked in the build that Ariel posted on the
issue for this bug. Apparently it doesn't require build changes to work,
or have those changes been made. Or was Ariel referring to the bug that
means the legacy Java 6 is required for Java to work on AOO???

I tried to find out what was going on in the thread

https://lists.apache.org/thread.html/0e96354facb4683435be70f428f8381636b2becaa89b34ab7b5f3ef0@%3Cdev.openoffice.apache.org%3E

Subject: Status of "Base 4.1.2 does not open Tables and Queries in Mac OSX"

I could not get a clear consensus that it has been fixed in 4.1.3, so I could not include it
in the release notes as a fixed bug. There is still time to change that.

The inability to build on newer versions of OS X refer to fixing the bug that requires the
legacy version of Java 6 be installed before any version of Java can be found by AOO. I
currently have Java 1.8.0 installed and the legacy Java 1.6.0. AOO is using the 1.8 version but
would not be able to use it if 1.6 was not also installed.

Each major update of macOS (previously known as Mac OS X) removes the legacy Java and requires
it to be reinstalled before AOO will find the newer Java.

https://bz.apache.org/ooo/show_bug.cgi?id=126591

And that bug states "RESOLVED NOT_AN_ISSUE".
It should be reopened because it is an issue (Mac specific).

AOO should find latest Oracle JRE's without having an obsolete Java installed.

The issue has come up many times on the forum and (if I recall correctly) on the users mailing
list. I think it is related (if I recall correctly) to the location Java is installed in the
latest versions of OS X. AOO can't find it unless JRE 1.6 was also installed.

No. It is Apache OpenOffice that is being called "moribund".
See https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Apache_OpenOffice

The Apache project is indicated as being a derivative
project, and has been given a separate page as such. T

No. The Apache OpenOffice page states:
"Apache OpenOffice (AOO) is an open-source office productivity software suite. It is a
successor project of OpenOffice.org "

he issue there is
that one or two users (who happen to also be moderators) are very set on
considering the Apache project a different project, and not the "successor"
of the Oracle project. So it's actually the Oracle project that is being
called dormant.

Wrong. Check the page https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Apache_OpenOffice

then I would suggest to change it like the following to make it clear that it depends on the
OS and which version:

OS X 64-bit (x86-64)(DMG) -- OS X (version = 10.7) (DMG)

OS X 32-bit (x86)(DMG) -- OS X (version = 10.6) (DMG)

Download auto detection for OS X

2015-07-04 Thread Larry Gusaas
The download page, http://www.openoffice.org/download/index.html , is not properly recognizing
my Operating system Mac OS X ver. 10.10 (Yosemite).

It shows OS X 32-bit (x86) (DMG) instead of OS X 64-bit (x86-64) (DMG)
AOO

And says Problem: Apache OpenOffice 4.1.1 is not available for OS X 32-bit
(x86) (DMG).
Solution: Please select version 4.0.1.

I just answered a post on the users mailing list about this problem. I have seen other similar

The detection used to work for OS X 64 bit .

OK, I see Larry has done this.

I took a cursory look at Ariels's Comment 7 also.
It would help if we knew what particular functions of AOO failed without
the use of Java 6.

Some further clarification.
Issue 126130 is specific to Macs.
AOO does not require Java 6. It will work with newer versions, however, AOO will not find newer
versions unless Java 6 is installed. This is a bug in AOO brought about after Apple quit
building and providing their own version of Java.

Many months ago, I tried to get, through additional java flags, what
problems any of our java code might be causing for java 7 specifically.
Some methods we are using are deprecated, but I didn't interpret these
as show stoppers. However, I will upgrade to Java 8, and run through
this scenario again to see what comes out.

Thanks for all the comments.

Apache OpenOffice works with Java 8, but you also need to have Java 6 installed. Java 6 for
Macs was provided by Apple, not Oracle.
