2023-05-19 Thread Peter Kovacs

Hello Rizwan,

Thank you for taking interest in the OpenOffice Project.

We are not really organized in an industrial way. We are volunteers
working on this project for the public welfare.

However we have always need for volunteers. One main difference is that
we do not use hierarchical structures unlike common in industry.

We move by consent and meritocracy principles.

You know best how your skills are used. It is up to you how you engage.

 I see following topics in web sphere, without any priority applied:

 * robot.txt for mediawiki, forum (maybe better title is outtakes
   mediawiki & forum)
 * migration pootle
 * update mediawiki
 * migration blog to pelican
 * update opengrok
 * migration to container based services (actually I see that as part
   of above points)
 * we need to do something with the extension page
 * forum maintenance

anyone has more points web related?

All the best

Peter

Hi Dave,

That is very much obsolete and the Apache CMS has been deprecated for well over
a year.

The project site and OpenOffice.org are both in GitHub and using ASF Pelican:

See https://github.com/apache/openoffice-project and
https://github.com/apache/openoffice-org - the README.md files have
instructions.

It's been a while since I last edited pages on the website. I previously
edited pages using the browser-based editing workflow as described here:
https://openoffice.apache.org/docs/edit-cms.html#browser-based-editing-workflow
Now when I go to edit a page clicking my JavaScript bookmarklet returns:
can’t connect to the server at cms.apache.org.

Did I miss the memo about some change in this procedure, or is there
another problem?

TIA

Yes, but do we want to support Drupal ourselves? It’s something like OpenGrok,
Pootle, MediaWiki, and phpBB that will need periodic maintenance.

I talked about an email service so the drupal Website can sent passwort
reset emails. Not the drupal site itself.

But I think these sites were moved to external hosting since the ASF had
concerns, at the time, with the many different licenses used by the Extensions
and Templates hosted on those sites.

Exactly

I don't know if things have changed now. Otherwise this would still be the main
reason for hosting the two sites outside the ASF.

And still.

If everyone is touching this system with a 10 feet pole. I am not sure
if the AOO extension service is in an healthy situation for the project
. I mean there is still the FSF statement [1] on the net, which is not
nice. The current situation is that Andrea is stepping up for the email
service. I do not have the feeling that the extension page is much of an
interest to SF.net. And it seems the ASF is also not particular fond of
this system.

Should we maybe rethink the extension web service? Before volunteers can
work what to do, we need to have a vision, and clearly make plans what
to do.

Technically this would be possible, sure.

But I think these sites were moved to external hosting since the ASF had
concerns, at the time, with the many different licenses used by the
Extensions and Templates hosted on those sites.

I don't know if things have changed now. Otherwise this would still be
the main reason for hosting the two sites outside the ASF.

Hi Andrea,

We have 3 servers. Maybe we can deploy the service there?

Maybe best is because we get more and more services that we start to use
containers.

What do you think?

Yes, I am more than happy to help out with any necessary testing.

It took many attempts but I believe it works now. A simple way to test
it is to register a new user at

https://extensions.openoffice.org/en/user/register

or request a password reset mail (that you can simply ignore) at

https://extensions.openoffice.org/en/user/password

Some more details:

- I've only fixed Extensions so far, but Templates should be identical

- I tried with a GMail account created to this purpose, but it didn't
work: while I enabled POP/IMAP (and thus SMTP, I assume) in the GMail
settings, the site cannot connect to it. Port 465 is blocked on the
SourceForge side it seems, so port 587 with STARTTLS is the only viable
option; it connects, but for some reason GMail refuses credentials;
maybe websites must use the GMail API (which would be an issue, as the
application doesn't support it) to connect to GMail? Feedback welcome if
someone has already configured GMail SMTP successfully on a website.

- Then I simply created an account on a personally-owned SMTP server and
retried, with port 587 and STARTTLS. This worked for me. This is the
currently configured option, so if you are testing this is the one you
will test.

- Then I briefly tried with my ASF credentials and the ASF mail server
mail-relay.apache.org still 587/STARTTLS. It worked! But of course I
cannot leave my credentials in the site configuration so I reverted it
to the (working) option above.

I'm catching up with mail and indeed I see this is a recurrent issue.

To check the issue I tried register at the Templates site and received a
totally garbage response. First it claims to be unable to send an email,
then falsely claims to have sent an email to may address.

The issue is of course with the first part, i.e., it doesn't send out
mail. It is a rather ordinary failure, it is simply unable to send mail
since SourceForge disabled the feature (if I recall correctly; I looked
into this in early 2021). And the solution is rather ordinary too: we
just need to configure outgoing mail properly.

Can you please provide me the contact details of the project member who

Several of us have admin privileges, including Matthias, Pedro and me. I
had started fixing the issue long ago but that got stuck in JIRA mostly
due to misunderstandings. See

https://issues.apache.org/jira/browse/INFRA-21334

But I would suggest a simpler approach now: we can try and configure an
account to be used for sending mail (even a GMail account will do) and
update the site configuration to use GMail as SMTP. And then, if it
works, we replace it with a more reasonable sender, like an apache.org
address.

Honestly I haven't connected to the sites in several months, but if you
are up for testing I can find some time in the next couple days so that
we can fix the issue. It is 100% reproducible and 100% broken so
whatever comes out of this attempt won't make the situation worse!

To check the issue I tried register at the Templates site and received a

OK, that's another problem. The database is unreliable.

The only solution I found in such a situation is to store the extension
on an external site and use a link.

We really need to fix these problems together with SourceForge...

It is a low volume mail. Can you redirect to pl...@apache.org?

Unfortunately there is also some problem with Sourceforge for that extension?

Hello,
To publish extension, you must send an e-mail to
noreply[at]extensions.openoffice.org
Is this address correct?
Because I got an "undelivered" message.

Hi Pedro,

The forum now uses responsive css and when narrow the header is suppressed.

Re: [GRAPHICS] Help with SVG versions of AOO website logo and Forum Header

2022-05-10 Thread Pedro Lino
Hi Dave

I will upload or send to you by email the SVG(s) later today.

Can you use the SVG directly on the page? Wouldn't that be preferable instead
of PNGs?

Separate issue:
I opened the Spanish forum on Firefox running on Linux and it looks good.
However opening the same page on Android is missing some elements. I used
Firefox and Vivaldi and in both the top bar is missing as well as the "Enlaces
rápidos" text
I just switched to the EN page and the same problems occur on my Android 7.1.2
mobile

Best,
Pedro

You can upload it to imgur.com - I’ll download, test, and store in the forums.

I think we should have a logo/graphics place in OpenOffice.apache.org which
comes from https://github.com/apache./openoffice-project/

BTW - Someone else runs the DE forum and it’s outside of Apache.

Re: [GRAPHICS] Help with SVG versions of AOO website logo and Forum Header

2022-05-08 Thread Dick Groskamp
Dave,

For Dutch (NL) you don't need a separate Forum Header. You can safely use the
EN version.
We Dutch do so now and again "borrow" words from other languages. Forum is one
of them.
NL uses the same word as in English
So you can safely use the EN version then (Or copy and name it NL)

2022-05-07 Thread Pedro Lino
Hi again

I have created an SVG for the Forums/Fora (don't know where I should upload it
to)
The word Forum is editable (in Ubuntu Condensed 26pt)
I have created Forum (EN, FR, IT and PL), Foren (DE) and Foro (ES)

https://imgur.com/a/FDqydFu

If any of the other language users sends the word / characters I can update it
or simply send the SVG

Best,
Pedro

Hi Dave:

Official versions of the Orb and our Logo can be found here:

"Original" is the SVG version.

[GRAPHICS] Help with SVG versions of AOO website logo and Forum Header

2022-05-07 Thread Dave Fisher
Hi -

It would be great if we had a transparent background and svg versions of our
website logos:

We have an svg version of the orb here:
https://github.com/apache/openoffice-org/blob/main/assets/images/AOO_logos/svg/orb.svg
I can’t find an svg of the full website logo. Does anyone know of one?
An svg should convert any fonts to shapes

(1) The Forum header - https://forum.openoffice.org/en/forum/logo_forum.png

The same graphic on every forum right now. Size is 450px x 77px. Extra credit
if someone can create versions for: ES, FR, HU, IT, JA, NL, and PL. VI is
read-only and ZH is non-functional and not currently available.

(2) The website logo -
https://github.com/apache/openoffice-org/blob/main/assets/images/AOO_logos/AOO4_website_logo.png

The size is 268px x 100px

Best,
Dave

Typo in navigation bar website www.openoffice.org

2021-08-26 Thread Dick Groskamp
Just noticed a typo in the navigation bar on the website pages for
www.openoffice.org

In the bar it says: "Extentions & Templates" which should be "Extensions &
Templates"
(It is the bar below the announcement: "Released: Apache OpenOffice 4.1.10")

I've been looking some time to find the responsible element, but can't find it
anywhere in Github.

It is probably the element called: topbara

I have no idea where to look for it anymore.
Would someone be so kind to fix it for us, or point me to the right place ?

Yes, but https://www.openoffice.org/de/about-ooo/about-mailinglist.html does
not.

The problem seems to me to be the overall behavior, which runs as follows:

1.
Go to https://www.openoffice.org/

2.
In a German localized system you will now see on this page the notice:
"Diese Webseite gibt es auch in Deutsch (de). Einfach auf diesen Text klicken,
um weitergeleitet zu werden."

3.
If you click on this hint, you will be redirected to:
https://www.openoffice.org/de/

and _not_ to:
https://de.openoffice.org

Hey -

The page shows for me:

https://github.com/apache/openoffice-org/blob/main/content/de/about-ooo/about-mailinglist.html

https://de.openoffice.org/about-ooo/about-mailinglist.html

Redirects to

https://www.openoffice.org/de/about-ooo/about-mailinglist.html

There are two web servers.

% nslookup www.openoffice.org
…

Non-authoritative answer:
www.openoffice.org  canonical name = openoffice.apache.org.
Name:   openoffice.apache.org
Address: 95.216.26.30
Name:   openoffice.apache.org
Address: 207.244.88.140

Yes, that looks funny, but all the Apache Projects websites are served from
these servers.

I checked them both by IP address.

I double checked the migration directories from November and everything was
copied.

There are 657 html files under /de

There are now 658 html files under /de

Please just state your problem and stop accusations.

Yes. This is exactly the cause. That's why I wrote that the national pages are

i start from "Ich benötige Hilfe zu OpenOffice", and the Link is:

https://www.openoffice.org/about-ooo/about-mailinglist.html

without "de" in the link.

(I hope that this is just a carelessness error and not related to a schematic
approach to the CMS conversion, because I have always warned about the
consequences of the latter, because the national sites are not uniform.)

Hello Jörg,

I am not sure what is wrong. The link at [1] works for me. I see no
differences to the archive., Also the History at [2] does not show any
changes.

From which link do you start or which one is broken?

I saw that some links especially for pictures use HTTP. But I dont think
that is your issue. Others I could not find.

All the best

Peter

great that you like this change. :-)
It could be better but I don't know how and if it is possible.

There are some languages that have translated link texts but refer to
the English release notes. Example for .../ast/brand.md:

type=brand
home=home
search=buscar
selectedlang=ast
language=Llingua
name=Apache OpenOffice
tagline=La suite de productividá abierta y llibre
logo=AOO_logos/AOO4_website_logo.png
domain=https://www.openoffice.org
divid=bannera
announce=Espublizada Apache OpenOffice 4.1.10
announceurl=https://cwiki.apache.org/confluence/display/OOOUSERS/AOO+4.1.10+Release+Notes
announcetip=Espublizada Apache OpenOffice 4.1.10
~~

I would like to separate the translated text with the release data and
combine both again in the build process. Example:

type=brand
home=home
search=buscar
selectedlang=ast
language=Llingua
name=Apache OpenOffice
tagline=La suite de productividá abierta y llibre
logo=AOO_logos/AOO4_website_logo.png
domain=https://www.openoffice.org
divid=bannera
announce=Espublizada Apache OpenOffice ${release number}
announceurl=customized value is existing>

announcetip=Espublizada Apache OpenOffice ${release number}

Is it possible to take the release number fom a separate file and
include it here as variable?

Can the value for "announceurl" come from the general brand.md file and
only overwritten when a customized one is existing in the localized
brand.md?

However, I've not the knowledge to do this.
Do you have an idea how to do?

Thanks

Marcus

That's right, but you misunderstand me if you assume I wanted to use Flash.

I mentioned Flash as an example because I had mentioned PHP before and didn't
want to repeat that.

Flash is dead. But you can compile flash source code into JavaScript / css
using Apache Royale. This is an approach that I am interested in learning for
other reasons.

Thank you, this is great.

(Sorry, I have read the discussion there, at the moment, only briefly. If we
have to decide mandatory whether to use SF or Mirror, this will of course have
to be considered carefully.)

JavaScript may be the best technical option, but Flash, *for example*, would be
another alternative (regardless of whether you like it), so you can't say it
would only work using JavaScript.

But please: I don't want to argue about JavaScript, I just wanted to draw
attention to the problem I had named.

aoo-closer.cgi was an idea before SourceForge. It doesn’t work for the reason
you mention.

A download site that works without JavaScript is not a wizard it would be a
form perhaps many on separate pages. I have an idea, but don’t wait for me
because I won’t have time for a few months.

Where have you find this link? I don't see it on the download webpage.

Does anyone see the possibility to offer a parallel wizard

I've no idea what you mean, so I'm just asking:

What do you mean with website? What do you mean with wizard?

I mean step by step questions, explanations and choices,

e.g. you could start by asking the operating system

hm, why is it needed to ask questions to present the user a download
choice?

Please let me answer like this:

I don't know if this is really mandatory, I'm just making a suggestion for
improvements, in the sense of the improvements that have been made to the
download website in the last few months.
All these improvements were basically aimed at one thing: to improve the
understanding of technical issues, although it is actually about banal things
that a normal user should know without additional help.

Our download webpage today tries to guess the best
choice. When
the user wants something different, then it's very easy to select
something different.

The number of choices for the OSs are very clear. The
language items are
also really clear.

That's exactly what I wrote myself on the de-users list and expressed my lack
of understanding that users don't seem to be able to use a website that is as
easy to use as a vending machine.
Nevertheless, I have to take note that there are such users.

The the question is if can satisfy all users that have problems to find

When we get such a report here and there, then I think there is no real
big need at the moment and a quick answer to this user is faster than
investing hours of thinking and trying to improve the download
experience in general.

and if the user chooses "Windows" you could show him

directly the additional info that he has to make sure to
install a 32 bit Java later ...

OK, right, this an be improved. But the work I'm doing these
days is not
finished yet. So, suggestions are welcome.

And my suggestion comes from the observation that the improvements of the last

This is a complete different topic (at least in my eyes) and you are
right. An improvement would be to display the important notes
context-dependent of the chosen platform.

However, as I wrote it's not yet finished. ;-)

(*)
this is not a criticism, but the observation that here, on the list, it was
talked about that the current improvements are only implemented the way they
are, because there are technical limitations of the implementation

OK

The above said is my opinion. Maybe others have a different one.

My intention is rather to give the user additional information without him
having to actively do anything for it.

Yes and no. Your design is too static, I think more about dynamically adding
information and I think more long term.

for example: There were the problems about BigSur some time ago. If we had a
download wizard on the website we could have specifically put an info for MacOS
users there.

I can't tell you specific things specifically, because I don't save links to
corresponding statements from users.

My assessment of the topic comes from the situation that I do 15-20 hours of
voluntary support for AOO week after week, primarily in the forum
http://de.openoffice.info and on users...@openoffice.apache.org.

That's exactly what I wrote myself on the de-users list and expressed my lack
of understanding that users don't seem to be able to use a website that is as
easy to use as a vending machine.
Nevertheless, I have to take note that there are such users.

And my suggestion comes from the observation that the improvements of the last
months didn't seem optimal(*), because they required the user to actively do
something to get an additional info (either place the mouse over a button to
get a tooltip/teaser or actually click on a button to get an info page in a
separate window).

(*)
this is not a criticism, but the observation that here, on the list, it was
talked about that the current improvements are only implemented the way they
are, because there are technical limitations of the implementation

total:
my suggestion was only a suggestion. If the opinion of the list tends to be
that my suggestion is unnecessary, I have no problem with that.

Jörg

Does anyone see the possibility to offer a parallel wizard

on the website in the future, which guides step by step
through the selection of the correct download?

I've no idea what you mean, so I'm just asking:

What do you mean with website? What do you mean with wizard?

I mean step by step questions, explanations and choices, e.g. you could start
by asking the operating system

hm, why is it needed to ask questions to present the user a download
choice? Our download webpage today tries to guess the best choice. When
the user wants something different, then it's very easy to select
something different.

The number of choices for the OSs are very clear. The language items are
also really clear. And the highest version is the latest. If the
presentation or naming is unclear, then we can try to improve it.

Or asking somehow different:
What is the value add to change the download principle? What is missing
today? What could be improved?

and if the user chooses "Windows" you could show him directly the additional
info that he has to make sure to install a 32 bit Java later ...

OK, right, this an be improved. But the work I'm doing these days is not
finished yet. So, suggestions are welcome.

Thanks

Do you mean like the sourceforge page, that detects the
system and offers the download
https://sourceforge.net/projects/openofficeorg.mirror/files/la
test/download

No. At least _I_ mean an assistant that asks the user what he wants.

And I opened the thread here because on the de-users list once again someone
asked because he did not understand how to use the download page.
So the person is not able to understand that if he wants an installation package for
"Windows, german, version 4.1", he has to set it in the listboxes of the
download page first and then click on the appropriate button.

with a quick search I can only find 1 request from April, 13th 2021 and
nothing from 2020. Right? Where can I find the others?

Thanks
