MessageResourceConfig.nullValue = false

   Summary: MessageResourceConfig.nullValue = false
   Product: Struts
   Version: Nightly Build
  Platform: Other
OS/Version: Other
Status: NEW
  Severity: Minor
  Priority: Other
 Component: Controller
AssignedTo: [EMAIL PROTECTED]
ReportedBy: [EMAIL PROTECTED]

I created a patch for clazz MessageResourceConfig.java
it sets the default for *null* to 'false'.

so users, that are missing an i18n-key/value in their
Foo.properties will become an *error*-message like:
???de.memberForm.nameOfMember???
instead of an execption.

in JSF this is the default-behaivor. I guess it is more
clearer to (new) users... ?

Serverity was set to MINOR, since this is not a showstopper... :)
but it is also not an Enhancement... ;-)

Regards,
Matthias

Subject: New Struts download page

I've created a new Struts download page, that hooks up to the mirrors,
 here:

 http://struts.apache.org/download.cgi

This is based on the HTTPD download page, but slotted into the Struts web
 site framework.

At this time, the source for this page (i.e. download.xml) is *not*
checked in to CVS, because the xmlvalidate tasks in the build are not at
all happy with what's generated for the img elements, and I figured it
was more important to get something working up there than futz with a
fussy validator. ;-) I'll try to sort this out, and check in, soon.

Sometime fairly soon, we'll want to rationalise this download page with
the 'acquiring' page, which I did not attempt to update. However, in the
short term, I think we can probably announce 1.2.2 and point people to
 this new download page.

We may be able to change this on a major version change of Struts. Prior to
that, the issue is that it breaks backwards compatibility by inverting the

+1 to updating the minimum platform for Struts .Next to be Servlet 2.3
(and JSP 1.2), although the technical benefits of going one step
further (2.4/2.0) are so compelling I'd be in favor of going there
 instead:

 * Servlet filters can run on request dispatcher calls

 * Cleaned up semantics for internationalized apps

 * JSP 2.0 has many new features, including EL everywhere,
simple tag apis, tag files, much better XML syntax, ...

The counterbalance, of course, is the smaller number of deployed
containers supporting these APIs -- but that couterbalance gets
smaller over time, and I suspect will be non-existent by the time we
could get to a complete enough release to be GA quality.

I also suspect, given our track record :-), that re-engineering Struts
from scratch based on the latest platform APIs wouldn't take more time
than a gradual refactoring from the current code.

Regarding branches, STRUTS_1_2_BRANCH should definitely be created if
it's not yet, for ongoing development on that track, so the head can
 be used for new development.

And, since we'll contemplate non-backwards-compatible changes anyway,
let's just call it Struts 2 and be done with it.

+1 to move base Servlet API to 2.3
-0 to moving to 2.4
At this point, I think we should be conservative and wait to make 2.4
the minimum until we can explain why we need it. If that happens
during the course of development, then fine, but if many users are
still using Servlet 2.3, then let's not move too quickly.

Perhaps we should have a similar justification for 2.3, but I guess I
feel like it's old enough now that just because is an OK reason.

2004-08-31 Thread Michael McGrady
PROJECT
I am trying to build an imaging module for Struts, etc, buttons. What
this does is to use dynamic data on buttons, e.g. color, size, style,
font, language, etc., and to create the buttons on the fly. This is, of
course, done with JSP taglibs.

PROBLEM
My problem is that I extend the Struts SubmitTag and add various
properties, very much akin to the ImageTag in Struts. Additional to the
ImageTag properties, I add txtClr and bgClr properties as well as
txtClrCode and bgClrCode properties. The former allow us to hardcode
colors of images (buttons) and the latter to provide a dynamic value
depending on what is in a container referenced with a mapBean property
that is saved in session scope. When I use the code (txtClrCode and
bgClrCode) properties, I eventually set them to txtClr and bgClr before
writing to the response object. Also, I only use txtClrCode and
bgClrCode is txtClr and bgClr are null.

ANOMALY
All the properties are set to null in my ImageTag class. Yet, after the
initial value of a tag is set, changing the value of either the
txtClrCode or the bgClrCode is not working because somehow txtClr and
bgClr are not being reset to null as expected.

QUESTION
The computer is always right, so anyone know what I am doing wrong here?
Thanks
Michael McGrady

From: Martin Cooper [EMAIL PROTECTED]
That justification doesn't cut it, for me at least. Based on our past
behaviour, it's very likely that there will be something fairly stable
that people can pick up as a nightly build long, long before the final
release. That will likely still be long before the major app servers
 support Servlets 2.4.

Please stay on 2.3 for a while... I'm on HP-UX and HP always lags behind
providing Apache/Tomcat distributions. (I get the feeling we're supposed to
be happy they're free and not complain.)

While I don't mind using a different minor Tomcat version, I'm a little
uncomfortable going to Tomcat 5 before they've officially blessed it.

First off, this would have been more appropriate as a question posted to the
user list, rather than entered as a bug report.

It's impossible to tell just from a stack trace whether uprading would resolve
the issue or not. However, the reason the old implementation was deprecated is
because it is known to be very buggy. So I would very strongly encourage you to
try a later version, since there is a high probability that it will fix the
problem, even if I can't guarantee it.

Re: JIRA Conversion (was RE: patch to make sure streams get closed)

2004-08-31 Thread Ted Husted
One very good reason to stay with Bugzilla is that we often exchange tickets with
Jakarta Commons.

So, until Jakarta Commons changes to another system, I'm amending my previous +1 to -1.

Should Jakarta Commons ever change, then I would be in favor of migrating with them,
to retain compatibility.

 * The binary distribution contains the wrong version of commons validator
jar (the lib distribution seems to have the right one).
 * Struts 1.2.2 is incompatible with JDK 1.3 because it uses
 Boolean.valueOf(boolean) introduced in JDK 1.4

This is in the release notes, I think.

 Isn't it?
