For the performance objective, i think you should do it in the level back-end SQL database by using DTS or Integration services. Simply attach another backup DB from Production server and use DTS/Integration function to copy the same data. But before you do that, you should modify first the recId and dataAreaId in the backup DB. But it is still easier to write your own job to copy item into another company by using changeCompany function in DAX.
