Age of Connectivity
Caring Communities for the 21st Century: Imagining the Possible
Friday, 10 February 2006 International Conference 10am - 6pm UN
Headquarters, NY

The quantity of life change has become a quality of life challenge! Join
experts from the fields of urban planning and development, information
and communication technologies, finance, government, business, and
health,
to discuss and exchange ideas.
As part of a series of Interlinked Congresses addressing the Age of
Longevity held in cities around the world, this conference is organized
in
coordination with the United Nations Programme for Human Settlements
(UN-Habitat), UN Programme on Ageing, Department of Economic and Social
Affairs, Department of Public Information, NGOs, and the private
sector. The Conference is in support of the Commission for Social
Development and highlights the winning projects of the 2005 ICT Student
Design Competition.

The Age of Connectivity interrelates basic elements that influence our

quality of life - innovative rethinking of the basic elements --
family,
education, health, housing, multi-levels of government, and the ICT
Information Highway - and creates a unique opportunity to encourage a
quality blueprint for an enriched Society for All Ages. When perceived

with an open mind, these interrelationships offer endless opportunities
for
us all. Successful case studies, public/private partnerships, and
perspectives of local authorities, NGOs and business will be featured.
The
Conference's purpose is to build bridges and develop projects, services
and
products that support the needs of people of all ages. Each month the
world's older population increases by 1.2 million!

The following questions are the underlying themes:
* How can global connectivity assist in resolving the complex
challenges of a Graying Society?
* What blueprint is needed? What new mindsets and paradigms can
emerge from the age of digital opportunity?
* How to overcome the age-related digital divide and connect the
generations?
* How can partnerships be developed which incorporate older persons'

experience and augment their capacities?
* How can ICT (information and communication technology) boost
economic
development in an ageing society?
* How can ICT tools enhance life-long learning and employment?
* What role can e-health play in improving the quality of life for
people of all ages?

[DDN] Launched: Google Earth for the Mac

2006-01-11 Thread Andy Carvin

Hi everyone,

Google officially unveiled Google Earth for the Mac yesterday. You can
download it here:

http://earth.google.com/download-earth.html

To run it you'll need the latest operating system - Mac OSX 10.4. If you
try to upload it on OSX 10.3, you'll get a message saying they're still
working on a 10.3 version. Looks like I finally found the excuse to
upgrade. :-)

To Andy and all DDN folks

One great feature of Google Earth, for Mac users who haven't looked
into it yet, is the Google Earth Community. Users can share placemarks
and tours that get incorporated into the general Google Earth
database.

Here's my post about it, with a tour of my corner of the globe, the
Usumacinta River in Chiapas, Mexico, the superhighway of the ancient
Maya world:

The support section of the community forums is here:

http://bbs.keyhole.com/ubb/ubbthreads.php/Cat/0/C/50

Also note that in order to share placemarks and tours, you need to
register (a gmail account is sufficient) and follow the FAQ available
on the above page, or work through the manual which is available in
the application under Help. For some reason the Share with Google
Earth Community feature in the File menu did nothing for me.

Besides the requirement of OS 10.4, there are some graphic chip
requirements that folks should check out in this FAQ:

http://bbs.keyhole.com/ubb/showthreaded.php?Number=68845

If anyone has questions I'll be glad to try and answer them. I've been
playing with the leaked Mac pre-beta for a few weeks. I am
absolutely stunned at the resource Google has provided.

Best
Dave
