one of the oldest running services on the net is tpc.int, a free
service that provides internet based fax solutions. I suggest you
take a look...

This caught my eye. I'm interested in this as well, since I have
written internet based fax solutions in the past. If there's an
initiative on this, I would like to hear about it...

[DDN] article - will slashdot be overtaken by digg?

2006-01-12 Thread Phil Shapiro

hi DDN community -

this article in The Guardian raises some interesting questions.
http://technology.guardian.co.uk/weekly/story/0,16376,1683935,00.html

i'm a strong supporter of digg.com and have diminished my support of
slashdot -- although i still visit the slashdot site on occasion, i rarely
submit stories to slashdot.

as persons interested in access issues, consider the two different
publishing models offered by digg and slashdot. digg offers community-edited
news -- slashdot offers news that is edited by a small number of editors.

the former is much more participatory -- and valuable to the community
-- than the latter.

if digg.com continues its meteoric rise, that will have positive
ramifications for the citizen journalism movement and the transformation of news
to become more participatory in all its aspects.

visit digg.com often. each time you visit digg.com with your browser,
you're voting in favor of participatory media.

digg.com could potentially rise to be within the top 100 most visited web
sites. you and i could play a role in making that happen.

[DDN] news article - intel to launch pc in india

2006-01-12 Thread Phil Shapiro

Intel to launch sub Rs 10,000 PC

Our Corporate Bureau / Mumbai January 11, 2006

Intel Corporation, in an attempt to bridge the digital divide in the country, is
planning to launch a personal computer priced below Rs 10,000 in India by this
year-end. (This is roughly the same as $225 in U.S. dollars.)

The global IT major is also on track with its earlier announced plans of
investing over $1 billion in the country for its research and development (RD)
initiatives. It is also planning to look at newer locations for setting up
centres, in addition to its Bangalore facility.

“We are working on the sub-Rs 10,000 PC and expect it to be commercially
available by the end of this financial year. The PC will enable India to become
one of the most technologically advanced nations in the world,” Anand
Chandrasekher, senior vice-president and general manager (sales and marketing
group), told reporters here today.

[DDN] action item on digg.com story in the guardian

2006-01-12 Thread Phil Shapiro
hi DDN community -

i forgot to add, if you have a digg account (they're free to set up and
take just a minute to create), you can digg (vote your approval) of the guardian
news story i mentioned. here is where you can digg the story.

  http://digg.com/links/Will_Slashdot_be_overtaken_by_Digg_

the process of digging is to click on the yellow icon to the left of
the submitted digg story. a few seconds after you click, the number will
increment by one. sometimes the number will increment by 2 or 3 when more than
one person is digging a story at the same time.

Hi everyone,

This message comes from Solana Larsen, who's putting together a blog
digest for bloggers participating in the upcoming World Social Forum.
Please contact her for more info. -andy

 Original Message
Subject: Re: world social forum
Date: Thu, 12 Jan 2006 13:56:05 -0500
From: Solana Larsen [EMAIL PROTECTED]

The World Social Forum begins in Mali next week, and I am putting
together a group weblog for openDemocracy.net that will be covering
the Forum as it progresses to Venezuela and eventually Pakistan.
Global Voices and Civiblog.org are taking part in the project.

I am urgently seeking people who are going to the Forum in either
country who would like to write about their experiences there. Either
in the blog or in the shape of a formal article for openDemocracy.
People with their own blogs would be great, blogging novices welcome
too. I'm looking to gather a variety of perspectives.

The blog will launch around the 17th of January. Find it on
http://www.openDemocracy.net

If you, or someone you know is going to the Forum please contact:
[EMAIL PROTECTED] or US phone: +1 (646) 220-1459

Sincerely,

Solana
