Re: [digitalradio] Does K2 work OK for wider digital modes?

2008-03-13 Thread Rein Couperus
Rick,

the K2 works ok for the wider modes, with the SSB module built in.
I have used it e.g. for MT63 2k, and it worked fine.

You do need the modification which temperature-compensates the vfo.
MFSK16 is no problem with the K2, I have used it succesfully with gMFSK.

I bought the FT897D, which has a very precise VCXO later, because
it has 6 and 2 meters and 70 cm, so I take only one rig in the camper
(more space left for bottles to cool the operator). I can leave that on
for month and it will stay within 10 Hz at any temp.

With some of the recent comments about filtering and the use of the
Elecraft K2, I was wondering if these rigs are OK for the wider digital
modes that can exceed 2000 Hz.

Also, do you find that most rigs with no TCXO (such as the K2), will
work OK for the digital modes, including MFSK16 and similar modes that
require very close tolerance on frequency stability?

This was one of the things that prompted me to buy the ICOM IC-7000 for
my wife, since the TCXO is built in and it has something around 0.5 ppm
frequency stability. This is better than some other rigs, such as the
Ten Tec Argonaut V which has TCXO, but not that that accuracy. I did not
find any problem in using it, but I suspect that this mostly becomes an
issue if you are in an environment with changing ambient temperatures,
such as outside, field day, emergency use, etc.

Re: [digitalradio] Does K2 work OK for wider digital modes?

2008-03-13 Thread Leigh L Klotz, Jr.
I used my K2 for wide Olivia when it first came out. I had no trouble
with MFSK.

The K2 has a peculiarity, though, in that it can have a slight (less
than 10Hz) frequency shift between filter settings. It always uses its
wide filter for TX, so you need to use RIT, or engage the TX lock
feature of your digimode program after clicking on the signal but before
narrowing the filter.

The Elecraft list has some discussion about sources for a fixed-level
output board, which I bought and installed, with audio output
connections made to the MIC jack.

[digitalradio] GAREC-08 Gearing Up for HamRadio 2008 in Friedrichshafen, Germany

2008-03-13 Thread Mark Thompson
http://www.arrl.org/news/stories/2008/03/13/101/?nc=1

GAREC-08 Gearing Up for HamRadio 2008 in Friedrichshafen, Germany
The fourth annual Global Amateur Radio Emergency Communications (GAREC,
http://www.iaru.org/emergency/GAREC2008Program.pdf) Conference is scheduled for
June 26-27, 2008 in Friedrichshafen, Germany, held just prior to HamRadio 2008,
http://www.hamradio-friedrichshafen.de/html/en/. That event, called the Dayton
of Europe, is scheduled for June 27-29. GAREC's schedule is continuously being
updated and is subject to change.

Dr Hamadoun Touré, Secretary General of the International Telecommunication
Union (ITU) HB9EHT, is scheduled to present the opening remarks at GAREC-08; Dr
Touré received his Amateur Radio license in 2007. Ole Garpestad, LA2RR,
President of IARU Region 1, is scheduled to participate in the opening remarks,
too.

GAREC will take a look at the state of EmComm preparedness in each of the IARU
regions, as well as discuss experiences of the 2006 and 2007 EmComm
Parties-on-the-Air and the future of the Global Simulated Emergency Test (SET).
Delegates will also discuss implementation of the WRC-03 modifications to
Article 25 of the Radio Regulations, in respect to third-party traffic during
emergencies and exercises. The part of Article 25 concerning Emergency
Communications says Amateur stations may be used for transmitting
international communications on behalf of third parties only in case of
emergencies or disaster relief. An administration may determine the
applicability of this provision to amateur stations under its jurisdiction (RR
25.3), and Administrations are encouraged to take the necessary steps to allow
amateur stations to prepare for and meet communication needs in support of
disaster relief (RR 25.9A).

GAREC delegates will also have the opportunity to look at and discuss the
Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) between the International Amateur Radio Union
(IARU) and the International Federation of Red Cross Red Crescent Societies
(IFRC), as well as the MOU between the IARU and the ITU. IARU Vice President
Tim Ellam, VE6SH, with assistance from IFRC Secretary General Markku Niskala
and IARU International Coordinator for Emergency Communications Hans
Zimmermann, HB9AQS/F5VKP, will lead the discussion. A representative from the
ITU will also be on hand.

Each of the three IARU Region Presidents will speak on the status of EmComm in
their respective region. Seppo Sisättö, OH1VR, and Juha Hulkko, OH8NC, will
present on the possibility of Emergency Communication Centers around the world.
There will also be a talk on D-STAR in emergency communications. Case studies
of emergency communication practices will also be presented.

Those wishing to attend GAREC-08 are encouraged to register online
http://www.korkee.net/Garec2008/. For those registering prior to June 12, the
fee is €55; after June 12, the fee is €75. GAREC will take place in the
Conference Center of the Friedrichshafen Messe in the Oesterreich Room. Travel
and lodging information for GAREC and HamRadio 2008 is available online at the
HamRadio 2008 Web page http://www.hamradio-friedrichshafen.de/html/en/

[digitalradio] Packet radio using a Pocket PC

2008-03-13 Thread kc7cjo
I was wondering if anyone was using their Pocket PC on Packet?

I have an article written by DC7DS, but he's using the Kenwood
TH-D7A(G) with the built in TNC.

I'm trying to use a Dell Axim X7 Pocket PC as the Computer using a
stand alone TNC.

I would like to use a BayPac modem but they aren't going to make
them anymore and they don't work with the Pocket PC's anyway!

Is anyone out there using anything like this?

Thanks!
