The goal is to get the highest quality audio possible into your microphone, at
a reasonable volume level.
I'd try a volume level between 1/2 and 3/4 , and place the microphone about 3-6
inches away from the speaker, depending upon how loud it sounds as a starting
point, and how much background noise is present in your shack.
If you have fan or amplifier noise in the shack, or other noise from the rest
of the house, run at a lower volume level with the mike closer to the speaker.
- Or even use a paper towel roll to create a closed in environment from speaker
to microphone and eliminate outside noise.
In any case, watch the bar graphs on your audio control panel to detect and
tweak load levels.
Experiment with it a bit while decoding weak PSK signals... Strong signals are
not as good as weak ones for this. See what happens with higher or lower
volume, and different distances for the mike. All computer and radio audio
systems are different, the only way you'll find out what works best with your
stuff is to fool around with it a bit.

While awaiting arrival of a new shack PC (SLOW ebay dealer) I have resorted
to using my laptop to receive digital modes and have even made a qso or two my
holding the rig's mic to the laptop speaker!I am not able to hook-up the
laptop to my digital interface. When using microphone to speaker and manually
PTTing, what would the best technique be for a cleaner signal ? Low speaker
volume and mic closer to speaker? Louder volume and mic a couple of inches
away from speaker ?
