Re: [slim] Two Independent Servers?
You can essentially have as many music servers running at the same time on your network as it will support. When you get into the network config of a slim player (either hold left arrow or re-power it) you can choose between the available players. Different versions of server may require different versions of the firmware in the squeezeplayer. The player will prompt you to get the required version (by holding brightness) that it needs. Longer term, if anyone wants to maintain multiple servers, it is probably best to have them all on the same server version. -- Zaragon Zaragon's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=14577 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=44821 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss

Re: [slim] Wireless Connection refresh
You can factory default the player by holding + whilst you plug it in. However, that won't remove your neighbour's network name. The player is scanning for all the networks that it can see as it doesn't know which is yours. It then gives you the choice to tell it which is yours. It will then go through the configuration of the network that you told it to use. As you step through the configuration screens you will most likely see the choices and information that you entered previously. Just change/overwrite with new information. (It remembers values so you don't have to enter them after re-powering the player.) The only time being able to see your neighbour's network may be a problem is if both you and they are using the same channel. This can reduce your wireless range as they would interfere with each other. To determine if they are you would need a PC with wireless and a software package such as netstumber or similar. Generally wireless networks tend to default to around channel 6. So if you are having range problems try changing yours to channel 1 or 11. -- Zaragon Zaragon's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=14577 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=44827 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss

Unfortunately on my Linux system, there is something wrong with Linux cdrom driver and pressing eject when playing a CD hangs the system and it needs to be be rebooted so I've stopped testing the Eject button. Re: [slim] Low footprint integrated headless player required
As JJZolx has corrected the suggested command I thought I'd just add for anyone else that in general, for windows, if a filename or a directory name contains spaces then you have to place the whole string within double quotes. Otherwise the spaces look like separators between a command an its parameters. ie c:\program files\myprog.exe would like like you are trying to run c:\program with a parameter of files\myprog.exe So c:\program files\myprog.exe would be: c:\program files\myprog.exe You may also have to do this if you are trying to pass a path to another programme. eg myprog c:\all my music\musicfiles to avoid it looking like three parameters to myprog enclose the parameter in double quotes as in: myprog c:\all my music\musicfiles -- Zaragon Zaragon's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=14577 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=44771 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss

I do have an ethernet port in the theater, AND in the equipment room, so I could easily do an access point plus a switch. I need more wired connections in the equipment room anyway. Glad to be of service. I thought I'd mention that a Wireless Access Point (WAP) isn't a wireless router. So you will need to be a little careful in your choice. Although physically they can be identical they have different control software. Some wireless routers can be configured to be just access points though. Unfortunately for some reason access points often seem to be a lot more expensive that wireless routers. For anyone considering multiple access points/wireless routers. The key element is the IP address. Unless you manually assign all devices with their own unique IP address then ideally only one device should be a DHCP server giving out IP addresses. If there has to be two or more DHCP servers then ensure that the addresses that they give out do not overlap each other but that they are all within the same network address range. Typical home equipment defaults to using the address range 192.168.0.X/24 or 192.168.1.x/24 (The 24 refers to a simple netmask of 255.255.255.0). This gives a maximum of 254 addresses (since you can't use .0 or .255 as these are used to broadcast to all devices on the network). Just ensure that the range of the .X doesn't overlap on any DHCP server and not fogetting the servers/router's own address. Using DHCP in general and multiple DHCP in particular means any device can change it's IP address at any time so you cannot rely upon it for security or any block/allow filters such as in SqueezeCentre. -- Zaragon Zaragon's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=14577 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=44707 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss

Re: [slim] Low footprint integrated headless player required
The version of SoftSqueeze I have (3.2.1?) also installs SoftSqueezeHeadless.exe. I just have a shortcut to that in my start-up folder. Simple as that, and works perfectly with SqueezeCenter. I'm not even sure that Java is running as it has no graphical interface. [slim] Bug in the 'sleep' mode - not saving song location
I think I have found a bug in the software. Re: [slim] Why is SlimServer so slow?
Daniel it is probably worth you spending time un-installing all the applications that you don't use. Not just to stop any errors you may have picked up from the RAID resize. It is surprising how many applications install all those little helper things in odd places like the system tray to make it 0.25 seconds quicker to start up. Or have additional utilities like iTunes that has the device synchroniser to sync up the iPod which you don't have. All of which need time to start up and shut down and their potential to cause instability. Not to mention how the registry gets bloated. All of which shouldn't have much effect on performance unless you are overloading available real memory. It would be worth looking at the process list when SC is running slow to see if anything else is hogging the CPU or memory. One thing that just occurred to me that perhaps others with more knowledge can comment on. You get thrashing on startup if SC isn't closed down before you shut down the PC. I'd hazard a guess at that being the database doing a consistency check (I don't know mySQL.) on startup because it has found it to be in an inconsistant state. That sort of thing I'd expect if it was unexpectedly terminated or if data wasn't flushed before shutdown. Way back when the issue for external RAID arrays was always ensuring write cache data was flushed to all relevant array disks before shutting down the array, if it wasn't you got RAID resyncs on startup as the array checked itself for consistency and then DB consistency checks if the RAID didn't adjust properly. Since Windows asks apps to close and doesn't force terminate them they should all shut down cleanly and it should also be aware to flush all the disc caches. So it shouldn't be a problem. But...something is. -- Zaragon Zaragon's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=14577 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=44457 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss

The posting I made 2006-01-26, 18:00 is still, I believe, technically correct. The Instsrv command installs a new service. That service runs the srvany.exe application. Then sometimes DS was not able to start or was freezing during playback ...each time I was forced to cut the main power. I try re-installing same SS and SSOD, but it only works fine on that day. Next power up the same mess was back with never ending start and freeze... So I move all my music back on an external USB HDD and I was looking for to get SS6.5.4 for XP to download, but no way to find it on Slim Devices site, I can only have SC7.0... As I'm really not ready to risk the move to SC yet, I jump back on the SS6.5.1 copy I keep on my HDD. It works fine but my Transporter downgarde FW from 31 to 27 and my product is now back from Logitech to Slim Devices... [slim] SBR as wireless bridge?
Hi all, Can the Squeezebox Receiver work as a wireless bridge, to connect a wired-only device to the wireless network via the SBR? I've had this working in the past with an old SB2 - but, if it is supported with the SBR, I don't seem to be able to find a way to enable it. Yeah the feature is there. The only hardware difference between the SB2/3 and the SBR is the lack of screen, addition of the LED and button on the front and a change of DAC. Re: [slim] What happened to performance options?
Thanks for the heads up: this article seems to be a bit outdated. So there's no longer a way to avoid artwork scan? If I point it to an empty directory will it stop at that point or will it consider that a fail and go on to walk the music subdirectories anyway? What version have you been running before? What OS? Any chance you got a backup of the configuration file? Previous version was whatever the one on the primary download page was as of the day the Squeezenetwork update was pushed (I checked to see if 7 was there yet that day, and it was still the one I had. XP. Nope. But that setting is presented to you twice before the initial scan starts (when you select the music source and on the summary page of the wizard). You should have seen it's been changed before the lengthy scan. By the wizard you mean the installer .exe? I didn't see those options atall. Oh well. I do think it's a failing that I can't change ALL the settings on multiple tabs without triggering a scan each time I save ONE of them. -- newgrange28 newgrange28's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=16097 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=44826 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss
Re: [slim] Problems Keeping SBC Connected via wireless
Here's a test I did that, in my mind points to either the player or the software. I'm running wireless and also have dropped connections, or drop outs. When I say wireless, I'm connected using two linksys wrt54gls, on of which is in bridge mode. This was done after having just one wrt56gl. I installed the second hoping it would provide me with a stronger signal - to no avail. So then, I simple replace the SlimDevice, and put a laptop in place, pluging it into the second router. Guess what? No dropped connections. I too love this device and wish it would just work. My next step is upgrade to version 7, but if I still have dropped connections, then that's the end of the line for me. -- Doukg Walch Doukg Walch's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=12552 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=44794 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss
Re: [slim] Problems Keeping SBC Connected via wireless
I am still in the long slow process of debugging this situation. I turned off wireless security on my router as i mentioned in my post above, and thought that had improved the situation, however about 1 hour after having done the factory reset with the new security disabled wireless, the drop-outs returned again. At this point the only way for me to control the SBR using the SBC is to turn it off and on every time i want to 'change something' (such as pause, ff, etc). The SBR can be very reliably controlled via the squeezecenter software. Everything indicates that my wireless signal strength is fine. I have used msconfig to disable all services/firewalls/anti-virus off of the machine i am running squeezecenter on. This still does not make a difference. My thinking now is that there is something defective about my SBC. I am in contact with anoop from techsupport. I can only hope that he can help me to resolve these problems. Thanks for the reply btw. Re: [slim] Problems Keeping SBC Connected via wireless
Since you say that setting up the SBR in bridge mode (I assume you mean ad-hoc) with the controller accessing the network via the SBR and it works without a problem, then this, to my mind, points the issue at your wireless router. If you really do mean bridge mode, the SBR is accessing the network via wireless and your controller never drops out then it kind of still points to the wireless router. What may be happening is that if a device is only infrequently accessing an access point then the access point can turn down the transmit power. With the SBR in ad-hoc mode the SBC isn't accessing the router so no problems. With the SBR bridging it will keep the router AP active with power levels high. Of course it may have nothing to do with it. May be worth looking for any options in the router config for power saving or similar. -- Zaragon Zaragon's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=14577 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=44794 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss
[slim] Problem with SB3 after Upgrade to 7.0
I just upgraded to squeezecenter 7.0.0. This forced a firmware upgrade on the SB3. Now SB3 won't connect (wirelessly) to either the squuezenetwork or the server. I am running on mac OSX.5.2. The only slightly unusual thing is that the wireless network I am using to connect to Squeezecenter is a subnetwork of my Time capsule (because SB3 currently won't speak to SB3). Now the key point is that this set-up was working just fine with Slimserver 6.5.4. After the upgrade to 7.0.0, it won't connect to squeezenetwork or squeezecenter. There have been no changes in any network settings. Is there anything I need to set up in 7.0.0 or any legacy files i need to remove or any other suggestions? Much appreciated. Re: [slim] SqueezeCenter issues
This may need some clarification of what you are trying to do. If I can paraphrase let me see if I have this correct. You had a version prior to SC7 installed and working OK. You installed SC7 and using your SB remote connected the SB to the SqueezeNETWORK ie not your local server. You can play internet streaming by using the SB remote or a browser connected to the SqueezeNETWORK. If you direct your browser at the local SC you don't see the SB listed in the player list. Is this correct? If so, with the SB connected to SqueezeNetwork it isn't connected to the local SC so it won't be seen by the local SC in a browser window. Use the SB remote to change the SB back to local SqueezeCentre. If you correctly entered your SqueezeNetwork identity in your local SqueezeCentre then on the player selection dropdown it should list your player as connected to SqueezeCenter, selecting it send a message to SqueezeNetwork to tell your player to reconnect to the SqueezeCentre. If you don't see that then there may be a problem with your SqueezeCentre accessing SqueezeNetwork. -- Zaragon Zaragon's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=14577 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=44848 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss

Re: [slim] Low footprint integrated headless player required
ModelCitizen;280295 Wrote: I followed your instructions and a service was created that called C:\Program Files\Windows Resource Kits\Tools\srvany.exe, not softsqueezeHeadless.exe as it should. I've corrected the path in the regsitry but the service won't start. I'm about to delete the service and try setting it up from scratch. That's exactly what it's supposed to do. The program that runs as a service is srvany.exe (Serve Any). It's a wrapper that is used to run other programs as Windows services. Normally, in order for a program to run as a service it has to be designed to do so. So you install this little wrapper program that in turn runs your desired program. That's what the 'Parameters' key in the registry is for. It tells srvany what program to run. When the service is running you should see both processes running under Windows Task Manager - srvany.exe and softsqueezeheadless.exe (or squeezeslave.exe). SoftsqueezeHeadless is a good bit harder to run as a service than Squeezeslave, since you must somehow first configure all the connection parameters that it will use (normally done from the gui interface), while with Squeezeslave you just pass the connection data on the command line. I have them both configured as services ony my work PC, but usually use Squeezeslave. I'd try it again and see if you can't fix the volume issue. One other thing... In investigating where Softqueeze stores its settings (haven't found them yet) I see that I created a local user (called Squeeze, what else?) on my PC used to run the services. That may be necessary to pull this off. So create a new user and give it a password, then go into the Services manager and have the service log on using that account. -- JJZolx Jim JJZolx's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=10 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=44771 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss
Re: [slim] Problems Keeping SBC Connected via wireless
Zaragon, First of all, thanks for the response. When i said 'bridged mode' in a previous post i was referring to the setup where the SBR is wired and the SBC connects directly to the SBR via ad-hoc network. Sorry if i confused things by saying bridged mode below. This situation does take the wireless network out of the equation and should point to the wireless network being the problem. However, the thing that still keeps me thinking that something is wrong with the SBC and not the router (or its settings) is that the SBR has no problems connecting and holding connection with the router wirelessly. It will play music without end connected to my home network wirelessly. I can also control the SBR flawlessly with the squeezecenter software when it is connected to the wireless router wirelessly. I only tried the ad-hoc 'bridged' mode for debugging purposes. Given the location of the receiver i want to use i must use full wireless or 'normal' mode. The only thing that is having problems connecting is the SBC. Even if i continuously use the SBC while the router, SBC and SBR are all in the same room (when all is set up to be wirelessly connected) it still loses its connection. Setting things up like this was another attempt to debug the situation. -- poulsen11 poulsen11's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=15935 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=44794 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss
