Re: [slim] Problems with Mesh Wi-Fi?
Thanks for that suggestion. Yes they are wi-fi 6 routers. Had a quick look via Deco app and web browser and can't see an option to either disable wi-fi 6 or maybe set wi-fi mode to just 802.11n only (which hopefully achieves the same thing?). [slim] Problems with Mesh Wi-Fi?
Sorry if this has been covered - couldn't find it with a quick search so just point me at the thread please. I just replaced my "normal" 4G modem/router + wi-fi range extender with a 5-station TP-Link Deco X20 mesh system to get better signal strength throughout the house. And indeed I have - my various Squeeze devices report better signal strength all round. However, I'm now getting terrible rebuffering - 5 second gaps every 30 seconds of music - especially with FLAC files played from my iMac. Lower-res files (e.g. 320K MP3) cause slightly less problems but still noticeable. Network is optimised according to Deco App and inSSIDer scan looks good. Everything rebooted. I do use SmartDNS but that shouldn't affect local playback should it? Anyone else had the same problems? Any ideas? Re: [slim] John Darko talks about Squeezebox / LMS in 2019
To be fair, I think it's only the web UI that the article is criticising, not the various IOS / Android apps, several of which he calls out as good. And he rates some combinations better than Roon which can't be bad. Personally, I think the web UI is fine - easy to use and intuitive (well at least for an old fart like me). I have the left pane maximised with large artwork and a sort order of artist - year - album (where appropriate). I have no artwork showing in the right pane - just the play list. Just click on a track in either pane for all the extra info you might need. There's extra skins if you're obsessive about appearance. What's not to like? The only real thing I'd like (mentioned in an earlier thread started by me) is the ability to include "pointers" to non-local music (e.g. Spotify or Tidal albums) in the library so that LMS effectively integrates local music and streaming services like Roon. But Michael Herger has already said that this would be a significant chunk of work which, frankly, is unlikely to happen. And I haven't found a work around yet apart from putting the Spotty pointer in a Favorites folder in LMS as a quick way of reminding me about the albums and accessing them. The rest of Darko's article is relatively complementary, even though I don't know if a souped-up Raspberry Pi sounds significantly better into a decent DAC than the stock SBT digital out. Darko says "An audio HAT like those offered by ALLO, HifiBerry, JustBoom will see our Pi-Squeeze comfortably surpass the Squeezebox Touch on sound quality (with analogue OR digital)." Let me stress - I haven't heard a Pi+HAT so have no evidence either way. Anyway, I think it's nice to see good old SBT and LMS getting some new and relatively favourable press here in 2019. Anyone else seen this? https://darko.audio/2019/06/freshly-squeezed-streaming/ I'm a fan of Darko's website but I think he's a little harsh in this article, particularly about the UI. Quote "LMS web interface, accessible from ANY device running a web browser, has a face only a mother could love." The web-UI photo is not a good example IMHO. Re: [slim] Original Web site for Slim Devices
My first Squeezy was an SB3/Classic, closely followed by a Boom. Migrated to an early Touch and a couple of Radios and decided to get "a collection", purely for sentimental reasons. Scored an early SlimP3 and a silver SB2 off eBay and everything worked. The SlimP3 looks way cool from an elemental-technology perspective but, sadly, couldn't keep up from a SQ perspective, so it now sits in a cupboard, alongside the Classic and Boom. May have to dig it out again and plonk it on the bookshelf next to my other unused audio jewelry. Re: [slim] Status of various Squeezebox replacement projects/products?
There seems to be a plethora of SB Touch replacements / killers, mostly focused on improved SQ. BUT - why do all the manufacturers continue to think that i-Things or their Android equivalents are the UI of choice and just produce headless devices? I've played with RasPi-base solutions - sure they work well but it's still nerdsville central. I'm a long-time SB user and the ability to just stroll over to the nearest SB Touch, SB Classic, Radio etc. (I have them all) to control the music is seriously cool. We have multiple i-Things dotted around, but that's the point - they're not usually to hand, and then you have to swipe to the relevant app (iPeng etc.), wait for it to sync, blah blah. Sure we use them as well but a touch display on the actual client costs peanuts these days and I reckon it increases the marketability / differentiation of the product. We've also had visitors asking what's that playing? and being able to just see from the clients is great. Maybe I'm just the wrong target market these days but there are lots of us greys around with money to spend on an easy-to-use high-quality system. And it hasn't stopped Sonos either. An updated 24/192 capable SB Touch form-factor (display and Touch input) with Spotify, Tidal etc. apps at around £250 sterling would be a killer IMHO with a big name behind it. Yes I know - it sort of exists thanks to Triode -et al- but that doesn't count. [slim] What does VortexBox give me that I didn't know I needed?
Hi all. There are many good thing said about VortexBox on this forum and I like what I read about it, so I'm interested to see if I'm missing out on something by at least not running the software. Here's my current setup:- My LMS server is an Asus EeePC 1005HA netbook with Atom N270 processor, 2GB DDR2 RAM an a 1TB internal drive (upgrade). It is cabled to my master Buffalo WHR-HP-G54 router and runs Windows 7 Home Premium, Avast anti-virus, Internet Explorer, LMS and not much else. My library is currently around 400GB with about 28,000 songs. The Asus sits quietly in a corner, closed unless I want to use the display to see what's playing, initiate a rescan, etc. I rip CDs to FLAC (using dBpoweramp) or download files on a desktop Acer Z5610 Windows 7 machine which hosts my master database and is regularly backed up (Windows backup) to an external SATA disk stored off-site. I use MediaMonkey Gold to tag and organise my files on the Acer (and even to listen while I'm working on the PC), then FreeFileSync or FolderMatch to copy things across to the Asus once a week or so. I use iPad apps or the standard web interface to control the server as necessary. The Asus server feeds a hard-wired SB2, wireless SB3, wireless Touch, wireless Boom and a wireless Radio through three additional Buffalo routers configured as bridges to give me a good signal wherever I want music, usually synced to the same stream. I listen to some internet radio streams but don't do Pandora, Spotify, etc.; I don't have any hardware mods, LMS apps or plug-ins (apart from the basics) and have not yet ventured into Triode territory. Now I admit this is not an elegant one-box solution like VortexBox since it uses things I already had, but it works (mostly!) and I understand it. So what am I missing that VortexBox could give me? Please note this is NOT a VortexBox criticism; if I didn't already have some old hardware lying around I may well have gone down that route. Should I look at the software? Thanks in advance for any observations from a wet and windy (and bankrupt) little country. Re: [slim] Yet another what amp for my SB question
The Muse suggestion is really a variant of my Topping TP-20 MK 2 (see my original post). Realistically around 10W per channel into 8 ohms without excessive distortion. Nice sound but still looking for more grunt. T-class seems to top out (s'cuse pun) at the TP-60 which looks like around 30W without distortion (rated at 50W into 8 ohms BUT 10% THD). My Control Ones are not the Pro Version; the latter are 4 ohm nominal, the domestic version is 8 ohms, so we get a little less current out of the amp. Any other thoughts folks? Please note budget (£150 sterling / 175 euros / $230 US dollars). [slim] Yet another what amp for my SB question
Well despite the general doom and gloom about the demise of SB devices (nothwithstanding the community-funded thread) I'm still enjoying my little Squeezeboxen and waiting for used prices to settle down a bit so I can get some more. In the mean time, I recently bagged a brace of JBL Control One speakers in almost-new condition at a great price and I want to stick 'em on the end of a spare Squeezy. I'd forgotten how much I like these JBL beauties, but they do need a bit of welly to sing. I connected my little Topping TP-20 MKII but it runs out of steam just as the Control Ones start to boogie. The Topping TP-60 looks interesting but is much more expensive. So - any suggestions for a small straight-forward minimalistic line-level amp offering - say - upwards of 30W RMS per channel into 8 ohms (and not at 10% THD!)? Happy to buy used gear. Budget - how about £150 sterling / 175 euros / $230 US dollars? There's plenty above that budget (e.g used Cyrus Straight Line, Nu-Force) but I figure it's a decent break point for used gear at least. I know I can get some old Rotel / Denon / Sansui / Teac / whatever stuff below that price but I'd like something physically small and all I want is an on-off switch and a volume control. Thanks. Re: [slim] New Wireless Router Recommendations?
I had a Linksys combined modem/wireless router and found that it overheated with heavy wireless activity (i.e. streaming to multiple Squeezeboxes) causing problems both with the internet connection as well as local networking. So I replaced it with a simple ethernet modem (free from my ISP and tucked away out of sight) and a Buffalo AirStation WHR-HP-G54. If you don't know this device it's a high-power b/g (not n) router. Not made any more unfortunately. It's so good I bought a few more used ones from eBay and configured them as bridges to give me 100% wireless signal pretty much everywhere -chez nous-, plus a spare. The AirStations are rock-solid and you can flash Tomato or DD-WRT firmware as well if you're that way inclined. I have a mixture of stock firmware as well as these other two but don't notice any performance difference in my setup. Just my recommendation. Re: [slim] Why do you continue to use your Squeezebox ?
A poll associated with this post was created, to vote and see the results, please visit http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=88916 Question: Why do you continue to use Squeezebox ? - I'm satisfied with the Squeezebox system, why change something that works good ? - I have already invested too much in Squeezebox devices, would cost too much to switch - I have just purchased a new Squeezebox and won't switch to something else anytime soon - I love the 3rd party plugin/app model and would only switch to something else that supports this - I would consider switching if someone offered something with similar functionality - I have already started to look for something else but haven't found anything interesting yet - I have already started or completed the transition to something else Why do I stick with Squeezebox? The software updates are frequently irritating (I've turned off automatic updates after 7.5.5) and the clients are not exactly intuitive. But, at the time I bought my first one (see sig) there simply wasn't a viable and affordable alternative. My brother-in-law bought Sonos and, while he's had none of the wireless networking issues I enjoy, he has had many library management issues with the system simply not seeing some sources. And he's an Apple fanatic as well! Plus I think my system looks and sounds better than his. Until the Sonos Play 3 there wasn't an equivalent to Boom (better bring in Boom 2 quickly guys) and the Radio is still the best. Touch is flawed but unbeatable for the price IMHO. Would I buy again? Maybe. I've been a Naim fan for years and may have gone the Uniti route had it arrived earlier or if I was starting out now. But I've also realised that I'm now retired with 60-year-old years so income and hearing are now both sub-optimal. I'm now the weak link in the audio chain. Heck - I've also just splashed out on a Revox PR99 MK2 reel-to-reel tape recorder so what does that tell you about me? Bottom line - still good value for money but not recommended for techno-phobes. [slim] Archos Tablets for SqueezeCommander
OK - so I've searched but sometimes there's just too much detail to wade through so I'll risk the flames and post a simple question. I'm after a cheap (second-hand) tablet to control my SqueezeNet (see sig) since my Controller screen is dying. Preferred screen size 5-7. There was an Archos 5 8GB that just went for £60 sterling on eBay UK - this is the sort of money I'd hoped to spend but I can stretch a bit more. Looked at O2 Joggler but want battery for portability - over here in Portugal we spend a lot of time outside. I gather I need an Archos internet tablet rather than a home tablet to get a capacitive screen; apart from that I just don't know. Other brand suggestions welcome, but I want a simple install and minimal faffing around. Question : anything special I need to know about Android models / OS levels; memory requirements; etc. etc. ? Do the reviews that say sluggish matter when I'm just running SqueezeCommander? I'm fairly tech-savvy but just not up on tablets / Android / whatever anymore (I'm a child of the 60s and grew up with mainframes mini-computers - Windows 7 64-bit takes up enough of my time ...). My daughter's iPod / /iPad / iPhone / iLife are cool but just too much money for us humble pensioners. iPod Classic is as far as I got :-) Simpler Version : which cheap tablet to buy for a simple controller? Re: [slim] Router overheating with multiple devices?
Well today I installed a new Buffalo WHR-HP-G54 router to replace the Linksys WAG120N with cr*p wireless performance. Or rather - the Buffalo kind of installed itself - didn't use installation CD or anything. Plugged my freebie Thomson SpeedTouch modem in, connected the router, and about 3 minutes later I was back online. Not even PPPoE login information required - spooky! So far, after about 6 hours continuous use, not a single problem. And no ALAC crashes with Server 7.5.1 either! Ambient temperature here in Portugal is around 25 degrees at the moment - the modem is warm but not the router. Wireless signal strength (according to SB Server Information) after the swap has improved from 33% to 58% on the Boom outside, and from 44% to 71% for the SB3 Classic in the lounge. Result! Tomorrow I may investigate Tomato firmware, but the old engineer in me keeps saying if it ain't broke ... So a thumbs up for Buffalo then. Re: [slim] Router overheating with multiple devices?
It seems many folk still rate the old Linksys WRT54GL, perhaps with third-party firmware (Tomato etc.). Does it have a strong wireless signal or could I still be in for a range expander which itself could melt under the streaming load? Is it best to partner it with a proper Linksys modem like the old AG241 gateway perhaps or will my freebee (with the ADSL account) modem be perfectly OK? Any views on the WRT54GL versus Buffalo WHR-HP-G54 which is supposed to have a really good wireless range? Re: [slim] Router overheating with multiple devices?
Well I took the easy route and sprang for a Linksys WAG120N. Like Ms Fonda said oh so many years ago - no pain, no gain. Wired performance worse - SLIMP3 keeps rebuffering (unless this is yet another 7.5 bug; note to self - do not install latest upgrades unless they fix a problem I actually experience). Wireless performance abysmal. My Boom outide on the terrace used to have a 40% signal - now down to 2% - yes TWO PERCENT. That sleek sexy design with high WAF and internal antennas leaves something to be desired from a performance perspective IMHO. So I'm now looking at Buffalo WHR-HP-G54. Wiki doesn't have much to say but the reviews are fairly favourable and one of its USPs is supposed to be high power 802.11g. Otherwise it's something like the Hawking Hi-Gain Wireless-G Range Extender (HWREG1) but it's more than twice the price of an access point / router. Again -any views? My Linksys WAG54GX2 wireless gateway router has started to overheat and power down when I connect more than one device to it now. Overheating routers is a known issue but I wondered if anyone else is having a similar problem in a music streaming context. I have a desktop PC, laptop PC music server and a SLIMP3 connected to the router by ethernet, with an SB3 Classic and Boom on wireless. Music is usually synched across all devices. Apparently the router can't handle the throughput and dies. I'm already on my second PSU as well. Had to play some real CDs last night! Re: [slim] Advice on disk upgrade
Thanks for the input guys. Have pretty much decided to buy a pair of Western Digital My Book 500GB Home Edition drives which are on special offer down here for 88 euros (approx £78 sterling, US$113). These have USB + Firewire + eSata connectivity which gives me some options and should keep me going for a couple of years at least. I think I'll keep all the smarts on PCs and stick to dumb disks on the KISS principle, of which I'm a big fan. Don't really need NAS because the laptop server is virtually silent and on most of the day. Regarding backup times, I did a test with Windows Backup and did my 110GB library in about 4 hours from a WD Passport 160GB to a Lacie Big Disk 250GB both external via USB2.0 on a friends new-ish laptop under XP Pro. Not too bad overnight I guess. And yes - my disks are regularly defragged and I always make sure there is enough space on the destination drive so that Windows does not have to compress (even though it may decide to do so anyway). [slim] Advice on disk upgrade
Hi from not-so-sunny-at-the-moment Portugal, Would appreciate some views on the best way to go for hard disk storage for my toons. Currently running a nice quiet but elderly Sony Vaio 512MB laptop (so old it's USB 1.1!) under XP Pro with an external WD Passport 160GB USB disk as the server which works fine. But the disk is now full with close on 10,000 tracks and my external Lacie 250GB Big Disk on the main desktop computer doesn't have enough room to backup the data and the music files. Figure I should aim for a couple of external 500GB (nominal) drives, one backing up the other, but not sure whether to just add USB drives or head down the NAS route. Cost IS an issue (I'm retired in Euro land and the UK pound is hurting LOTS . . .). Any views on recommended products / configurations? How are people backing up these sorts of file sizes? Windoze Backup tells me it wants 23 hours to backup the existing music files (assuming I had enough free space), even with the external drives connected via USB 2.0 on the desktop PC. What's the fastest (secure) way to backup? Is it faster via NAS? Thanks. [slim] iTunes plugin to drive SqueezeCenter / SqueezeBox?
This may be a stpid question but here goes anyway . . . I like everything about my SB3 Classic setup except the web interface to SqueezeCenter which is depressingly slow and clunky (still). I'm using an old Sony Vaio laptop as the music server and it's running XP Pro on 512MB RAM and using iTunes to manage the music files. iTunes (8.0) runs well and is pretty snappy. Has there been any discussion about being able to use iTunes to drive SqueezeCenter through some form of plugin / interprogram communication so that I can tell SqueezeBox what to play from iTunes. I envisage something like an extra Play on Squeezebox button, or an option on the existing Play button. Apologies if this is a really dumb ask . . . [slim] SB3 v SB2 v SB1 - where's the thread?
Hi guys, Looking to get another SB for the garage / garden but used prices on SB3s are still high. There's a few SB2s and SB1s around but I don't know how they compare to the Mk3 (which I have). I know everyone is on about the Duet right now but can anyone point me at the features / performance comparison between the SB models in wireless mode? Must have been done but Search is not my friend right now. Thanks. Graeme -- GRC Seen it all, done it all, can't remember most of it . . . SB3 / Naim / Dynaudio some other stuff. Re: [slim] SqueezeCenter 7.0 extremely slow
I'm with you on this one. I installed SC7 and all seemed fine - for about 60 minutes. Then the web interface ground to a halt. Responses from the remote still OK. I'm running the default skin through IE7.0.5730.11 on Windows XP Pro SP2 with an AMD XP 2800+ 2.09GHz processor, 1GB RAM and 40GB iTunes music library on an 80GB C drive. There is only 3GB free space on the drive if that's significant. A couple of informal observations:- I just selected Albums to list from the libray and it took 84 seconds to load to the Done point where the browser pane responds to a scroll message. No music playing at the time. It is generally very sluggish - to the point of being unuseable when music is played. Going to Classic skin seems to speed things up a bit - album art seems to take forever to download. Running Firefox instead of IE7 seems a bit faster. I had no performance problems with SC6.5.4. Re: [slim] How to get Artwork?
EnochLight;276775 Wrote: This is simply not true. Any album artwork in iTunes should show up fine in SqueezeCenter as well as on your Controller - it works fine on mine. . . . Are you syncing your iTunes Library XML file with SqueezeCenter or are you just pointing SqueezeCenter to a folder where all of your iTunes music is stored? 1. Simply IS true for SC 6.5.4 and SC7 with SB3 so nah-nah-na-nah-nah :-) 2. I have specific paths declared to XML file and music folder - doesn't help. 3. My personal experience is that artwork automatically downloaded by iTunes (I don't buy iTunes music - just use it to organise independently ripped / downloaded files) is the problem. If it shows up in iTunes but not in SC then a simple - albeit longwinded - ruse is to copy the album art image from the bottom-right pane; select all the tracks on the album and right-click (sorry Mac users) to select Clear Downloaded Artwork; then paste the copied image back against all the tracks. I understand this tags each track with the artwork which SC7 then sees. Do this gradually over a period of time, preferably with some nice toons playing and a glass of red wine to hand. Thank you and good night. Graeme -- GRC Seen it all, done it all, can't remember most of it . . . SB3 / Naim / Dynaudio some other stuff.
