I basically I agree to everything, but I go a bit further in that I don't see a restriction on using an ASF-owned repository. We all agree that most of what was written to this list about licenses mixes up releases and other work. Documentation does not go into an Apache release and it does not undergo a formal vote by the PMC, so the release policy does not apply to it. This means that people from the project can work on CC-BY documentation, and here we agree. And, if you ask me, my view is that they can do that even using an ASF-owned repository different from our source repository; then others might believe that every commit is a release and then we might interpret https://issues.apache.org/jira/browse/LEGAL-552 in different ways. But honestly I would still pursue the avenue of a dedicated ASF repository. All we need to do is, maybe, reopen LEGAL-552 and ask for additional clarifications. Everything is on the wiki, so we could just keep what we have and dispose of the process. I mean: we can link to the (unfinished) new documentation from the wiki home page, design some template saying "This page is part of an unfinished documentation effort, please e-mail [this list] if you'd like to contribute" and put it on all pages that are still unfinished or just a title. Then the risk is to lose a bit of oversight and consistency, but at least we show what we have and we give people the opportunity to help if the wish. By the way, thanks Keith for your documentation efforts so far. And if I were you, I would simply relax the process and be available for creating accounts for new volunteers and give advice when needed. This way we don't have to close or undo anything. Then look under the title User Guides for OpenOffice 3.3, 3.4 and 4. Yes, if I open https://wiki.openoffice.org/wiki/Documentation I see a link to your (external, third-party) site. It's perfectly welcome to be there, as all other links to third-party documentation. But priority for us (for the OpenOffice project) is to get our collaboratively edited documentation available first. So in general I will prefer that people help the community efforts (and gain thus merit in the community) rather than helping third-party efforts. Especially if volunteers write to the community lists. That said, your model is clearly working well. It works surely better than the community efforts on the wiki at https://wiki.openoffice.org/wiki/Documentation/UserGuide So if you see something that in your experience works well in enabling volunteers to translate we can surely share ideas. For example, it seems that your case you provide new volunteers with an ODT file and ask that they translate it. How does it work with updates? Are you the only person authorized to edit the English version? Are translations aligned in some way? Does it help to have a stable English text to be translated first, and focus on translations only then? Thank you for reporting this. The file is complete and you can find it on your computer (it's named LICENSE). But a limitation in the window we use to display it indeed cuts it off. Re: Openoffice.uni documentation (Re: Fwd: Documention - sort of)
Dave wrote: Thanks a million! However it seems to me to be a little round about way. Wouldn't it be possible to simply post a link to: openoffice-uni.org There visitors can choose if they prefer pdf or odt (Answering multiple mails in one) The ODF Authors model I was referring to was quite similar: we have the content on the wiki, and then we have links (from the wiki) to the original ODT and PDF sources. This is the best situation since people who come from search engines will go to the wiki pages (high visibility) and from there reach the openoffice-uni site (that will gain much higher visibility due to the links and contents in our Wiki). me again: perhaps the simplest would be to put the link directly on https://wiki.openoffice.org/wiki/Documentation in the right hand column under user guides - name it Apacahe OpenOffice Writer for Students . Sure. I've just done it at https://wiki.openoffice.org/wiki/Documentation (it's the left hand column actually). But this should be in addition to the former, and not a replacement. Good and up-to-date materials deserve good visibility, so let's go for both. As to license: I'm open to anything which is open. Please tell me how I should reformulate that part. Since it is your work, this is very easy: you just replace the license notice in your ODT/PDF file with the text of the Appendix you find at http://www.apache.org/licenses/LICENSE-2.0.html (scroll down). This would put the guides under the same license as OpenOffice and make things simpler in general. Three students at our uni are doing an Arab version which should be complete by March. This is really interesting, especially considering that OpenOffice 4 in Arabic is close to being complete (93%) but we have no active team working on it. See https://translate.apache.org/ar/aoo40/ We could definitely work with your students so that they help translate not only the documentation, but the program too. This would be very beneficial to users. Regards, Andrea. - To unsubscribe, e-mail: doc-unsubscr...@openoffice.apache.org For additional commands, e-mail: doc-h...@openoffice.apache.org

Dave wrote: Is the Apache License by the way available in other languages? Or is it best just to stick to English? The only normative version is the English one. So, whatever language the document is in, the license is the English one (and very often the notice is in English too). I'm not aware of any official translations. This is not due to lack of volunteers, but presumably to the huge legal responsibility of officially approving a translation. Openoffice.uni documentation (Re: Fwd: Documention - sort of)

Hello Dave, I did take a look today. You have some nice documentation available, and all of it is up-to-date. Why don't you contribute it to the official OpenOffice wiki? This would make things easier in several respects: your documentation would be found much more easily by search engines and it would be more justified that you look for translators here. This is much like it worked for the ODF Authors group: they were publishing their documentation on the OpenOffice wiki and still maintaining the ODT and PDF versions available on their site, with mutual benefits. I see that you are using a different license than the Apache License 2 (the OpenOffice license, and the recommended license for new wiki content). So this might be an issue to consider; just make your choice and feel free to ask any questions. The official place for OpenOffice documentation is here: https://wiki.openoffice.org/wiki/Documentation/ Regards, Andrea. - To unsubscribe, e-mail: doc-unsubscr...@openoffice.apache.org For additional commands, e-mail: doc-h...@openoffice.apache.org

Has it been ported to the wiki (or where the original 3.x documents were) now? Having it available on the wiki would probably be best. In the wiki, the relevant pages should clearly be marked with the licensing terms since their license is not the one we are normally using for new wiki content (but of course we can perfectly publish this stuff on the wiki). Re: Help Needed: Redo the /porting/mac page
janI wrote: http://www.openoffice.org/porting/mac/ ... So my first question is - what does a MAC page have to do here. MAC is a supported platform, not third party ? - why does the porting page not have a link to the mac page ? The Mac version used to be a port (you can still find outdated information around, with the name Aqua Port), but it has been a fully supported version since 3.0.0 or around. So the porting page does not link to it since it's not a port. And the URL is... well, historical, but I wouldn't oppose to move it outside porting/ if we can setup redirects that won't break search engines. First of all, get an account on the wiki: http://wiki.openoffice.org/w/index.php?title=Special:UserLogintype=signup (please let us know if you experience any problems in this step). Then, open a chapter of the guide (Writer is OK for a start: http://wiki.openoffice.org/wiki/Documentation/UserGuide/Writer/Intro ) and you will be able to do minor fixes (like language fixes and clarifications) by clicking Edit on the right hand side.
