[libreoffice-documentation] NextCloud + LibreOffice Online for ODFAuthors: Is it a good idea?

2018-06-13 Thread Olivier Hallot
Hi All

Lets talk about Nextcloud and LOOL for ODFAuthors. Is it a good idea?

What is NextCloud and LibreOffice Online (NC+LOOL)?
---

NC+LOOL is a hosted cloud storage with the addition of LibreOffice
online allowing direct document edition when the files are compatible
with ODF and OOXML for text documents, spreadsheets and presentations.

Why the proposed change?

Because it has advantages. Oh, really?

For the storage point of view, there are no changes expected because
NextCloud and PLONE can store all files the same way and in the same
directories hierarchy. That means that we can clone the current
ODFAuthors Plone file storage inside a NextCloud server, preserving the
same nomenclature and navigation.

For editing Chapter files there is also no changes expected because one
can download the file and edit locally, then upload it back to
Nextcloud, as in PLone.

NextCloud supports WEBDAV protocol and LibreOffice can open files
directly in NextCloud with the command "Open Remote File" after setting
up the webdav server. The download/upload operation is handled inside
the local LibreOffice, no copy stored locally. However this feature is
not in my opinion, what justifies the change.

NextCloud, like Dropbox, has a client application for all desktops and
mobile devices that allows a local folder to be synchronized with a
folder in the server. In other words, you can have a full copy of a
Guide folder in your machine and edit it locally. The file is
periodically synchronized with the server, turning the upload/download
process completely transparent. Nice feature indeed.

LibreOffice Online is a NextCloud plugin (app) that allows direct
edition of Chapters inside the cloud storage. That is an interesting
feature and worth the change. Here are some of the use cases:

- Quick edition: contents additions, typos, linguistics and corrections
can be edited directly in the stored file, saving the download/upload
operation for the same purpose. LOOL is powerful enough to even address
larger chunks of text, including (with limitations) images and tables.

- Immediate availability: Since there is no download/upload the changes
are immediately available and the files are not locked by a
check-out/check-in procedure. If an Author is not available for a period
and has checked out a chapter, the old process depended on him to
release the changes. With LOOL, the work can be relayed instantly
because it is live in the cloud.

- Ubiquity: as any other cloud service, you access and work on the files
in any environment and location (home, office, travel, etc..) and with
your preferred device.

- Collaborative editing: LOOL allows more than one user to read and edit
the same file at the same moment. It may sound too much for authoring,
but can be interesting for live team review of a document.

Some wrap up so far..
--

- The current editing process is preserved, only the storage framework
changes,
- File storage / organization is preserved
- We get an online editor for quick work
- Immediate availability of edited work
- Folder synchronization is interesting
- Online edition is optional and not mandatory for Authors.

How do I test NextCloud+LOOL?
--

We have an instance of NC+LOOL operative in
https://nextcloud.libreoffice.org that is accessible for TDF members.
Please log in there and ping me to share the test folders with your login.

Q & A
--
Written on paper may sound very nice but still there are some open ends
to address.

Does LOOL support track changes?
Yes

Can I add tables and insert images?
Yes. But no table or frame styling. For hard work consider doing offline

what about style support?
LOOL support paragraph styles only. All other style operation and
application must be done offline.

Can I add a new style?
No. See above

Can I apply a paragraph style?
yes. The style must exist before opening the file for edition.

Can I undo a change in a chapter with LOOL?
LOOL use NextCloud history management.

Do I need to be a member of TDF to use a possible new ODFAuthor service?

The current testing environment requires TDF membership. For Authors
production, an exclusive NC+LOOL can be considered without the mandatory
membership.

How to assemble the book/guide?
Such complex operation must be done offline.

What's next?

Initially, gather your opinions on the proposed alternative, answer
questions and evaluate feasibility.

Then review the editing and updating procedures of the existing chapters
with the new tool.

We also need to check if our infra team can

Oooh, I don't want to delete the connection between ODFAthors and
Friends of OpenDocument. It is really important. But the content in the
section is rather old. And nobody is working on it. I would delete the
list of books there.
Let's write a text like:
"Printed books for sale
The books are also available in printed form from the Friends of
OpenDocument's store at Lulu.com."
(without any list of books.)

More the ODFAuthor's one.

So Andreas should wait with continuing his work until we have a
decision? Otherwise he perhaps does a lot of work for the waste paper bin.

+1 And thanks for your past maintenance of the Plone instance.

+1 for an archive.

You are correct, ODFAuthors is a working platform, but I see no
beneficial reason to remove the "Printed books for sale" section. There
is a historical link between ODFAuthors (formally OpenOffice Authors)
and the printed books publisher Friends of OpenDocument
http://www.friendsofopendocument.com/newsite/ IIRC both were originally
established by Jean Weber. Profits from the sale of the printed books
are made available to support organisations promoting ODF.

The green should be possible, but making a Plone instance look like a
Silverstripe driver website would, even if possible, involve a great
deal of work, which I doubt Andreas needs at this time.

Which feather did you have in mind, the ASF one? :))

There is a proposal under consideration that we move from ODFAuthors to
NextCloud LibreOffice Online as our working platform. I would like to
see this discussed at today's Docs meeting.

Dave

Hi All,

I have "/finally/" managed to finish reviewing and updating chapter 2 of
the GS60 guide. I believe it is ready for publication, but would like
another member of the team to give it a final check:

1. Throw away all old stuff:
AOO & OOo
There is no need for the TDF to stockpile these things as they are very,
very old or not necessary for us any more.

If not, put it in an archive folder very, very deep.

2. Starting page:
Delete the "Printed books for sale" section.
ODFauthors is a working platform. We should put this information at an
other place.

3. Setting a link on first page:
"If you just want to read documentation, see our published chapters at:
https://documentation.libreoffice.org "

4. Three links on page (in header and/or text):
https://wiki.documentfoundation.org/Documentation
https://www.libreoffice.org/
https://www.documentfoundation.org/

5. Perhaps a formal question:
Get the same frame look of the page like
https://www.libreoffice.org/ and https://www.documentfoundation.org/

- a more present "LibO-green"
- The TDF-Icon (perhaps with a feather in it).
