What suggestions does the group have on re-whitening the
lines on the
pointer knobs? I was thinking of using model enamel and a
toothpick, wiping

away any excess with qtips. Mike.

I use paint pens. They come in several colors and tip
widths. I got mine from a local art supply store. Mine were
made by the same people who make Sharpie marker pens. These
are filled with enamel paint.

For Sale:

Drake RCS-4 Serial #1186.  Best Offer

I am the original owner so I know it's history.

I had this unit working at my QTH for abt 10 years back in the 70s and
80s, then I went QRT until recently.

The control box is in very good condition and was in storage in my attic
for many years.

The remote switch box sat outside in the elements all these years and
shows it's age.

I recently put it all on the work-bench and got it working again, but,
it needs some work.  I did replace the terminal blocks on the remote
unit as they were beyond repair.  The new terminal blocks are as close
to the original as I could find.  The switch contacts on the remote unit
were cleaned with De-Oxit.  I have done nothing with the control box, it
is completely original.  The only other parts replaced were the bolts
and nuts to hold it to a pipe (the mounting brackets are original) and
the grounding stud.

I did have it working on the workbench, but when I put it on the tower,
the motor would only turn if I gave the box a good whack, so it needs to
be taken apart again and further restoration done.

I lost the manual at some point, but good PDF copies are available, or I
can e-mail one I found.

I would rather see it go to a good home than just sit in my attic again.

Contact me off list.

Thanks,
Loren - WA3WZR

[Drakelist] Late R-4C 3rd Mixer Changes

2012-02-07 Thread Steve Wedge
Anyone who has had a late-production R-4C has heard the hiss when listening to
a quiet band or a weak signal. Some folks say it sounds like bacon frying
(Yum!) but to me it sounds more like the rain setting of one of those noise
generators they sell at Brookstone that are supposed to put you to sleep at
night.

Searching through a lot of stuff, I've located two changes that do fairly
similar things on the large scale, but require differing numbers of parts and
time in which to do them.

I knew there was a Sartori mod and - sure enough - I finally found
www.archive.org and found the June 1979 issue of 73 Magazine. This is the
change I remember doing back in the '80's. I remember that it helped quite a
bit, but the receiver still was never really quiet. It changes the LO feed
from the grid of V6 to the cathode. It also adds a series-resonant circuit at
the plate to eliminate any excess 50 kHz crud from the output. I've wondered
whether or not one could hear this but I suppose there can be products from all
that crud that could get into the audible range.

There's also another mod that's described on
http://www.zerobeat.net/drakelist/drakemod/drmod40.html that involves fewer
added parts and looks like an easier change, overall. It does the same overall
feed change in that it moves the LO feed from the grid to the cathode, but
doesn't use the resonant circuit. It also changes the limiting diodes to
1N4148's removes some capacitors and replaces them with either different values
or jumpers. Besides erroneously calling out pin 1 of V6 as the old connection
point, it's easy enough to follow.

Has anyone out there tried both of these changes and, if so, which one worked
better?

73 enjoy those Drakes...

[Drakelist] Receive/Transmit Relay? Mute Problem?

2012-02-07 Thread Rick Wallace
Hi all,

I have a Drake C-line rig that does not mute the receiver even though the
transmitter is set to transceive. The unit has just been refurbished by one
of the well known, much admired folks who do that kind or work so I'm sure
it was in top notch working order when it was re-boxed and sent back to me
via UPS, here on Vashon Island, WA. However, when I hooked everything up I
found a big problem.

1. The receiver does not mute in any of the transceive modes. I get
acoustic feedback of my voice if I transmit SSB. When I go to tune mode I
get a loud tone (maybe 1,000 Khz sidetone?) in the speaker.

2. I've double checked all the interconnecting cables and had an
experienced Ham double check my connections as well. I've also swapped a
fresh cable into the mute cable position, as well as each of the other
cables, as a process of elimination technique.

3. If I switch the receiver Function switch to external mute or noise
blanker, the receiver mutes. However, even though the speaker is muted, the
S-meter goes all the way over to the right to 60 decibels if in Tune mode.

4. We disconnected the receiver end of the mute cable and measured
continuity to ground when switching the transmitter to Tune. The mute cable
is not being connected to ground if the receiver is simply in the On
position. However, the mute cable is being grounded if the receiver
Function switch is in the External Mute or Noise Blanker positions.

5. During all this, we hear no clicking of the transmit/receive relay.

What do you think? A faulty relay? Something upstream of the relay? Where
do I start looking?

Thnx,

Rick WØRIK

Rick,
Maybe I mis-understood..but do you have the R-4C in EXTERNAL MUTE
position??

It has to be.
The TX should mut the RX in that mode.

[Drakelist] PEP mods for W7, W4, MN2700 MN2000

2012-02-07 Thread Woody
*Hi Guys, I just completed installing K4DPK PEP kits in the W7, W4,MN2700
and MN2000.*
*I also put Blue LED's in the W7 and MN2700. The kits are extremely easy to
do or I would have never been able to install them!! And they really work
Great. Also the Blue LED's set the watt meter and tuner off really nice.
You don't have to mod. these any to put the LED's in as they will lay on
top of the meters inside the case and you pick up the voltage from the 9-12
volts to power the pep kit. I think its a nice addition to them but that's
my opinion.*
*K4DPK is a really nice guy a good friend and a straight shooter who is
willing to help any one!*
