The switch is in the tranceive position and working correctly.

Let me ask the obvious, and the only reason I do is because it's caught be
several times. What about the tranceiver/mute switch on the left rear
corner? Is it in Transceive position? If you have it locked on. take the
lock and move it back and forth a couple of times.

Thank you for all the advice. I have tried cleaning all of the switches
including the band switch along with the tube sockets and peaking the
crystal oscillators 40,15 and 10 meter bands all are running between -.6
and - .7 vdc. I changed the 6ea8 tubes in the front end and the receive
on 15 and 10 seems somewhat better but still not up to snuff. I can hear
the crystal calibrator but it is not giving me much on the s meter. I
can hear and make some contacts on 15 but when compared to a general
coverage receiver (not even a very good one) the s meter readings are
much lower on the TR-4.
What am I missing here? someone wrote that I should peak the band caps on
the effected bands. I am not sure where they are can someone tell me
where they are? and anything else that might be helpful to repair this problem?
I really love this transceiver. I find that whenever I can hear a signal
with it I can usually work them. I always get great signal reports even
without using my linear something I can't get with my Icom.

Thank you,
Matt

Matthew,
There is a #12 lamp, used as a fuse, in series with the antenna lead to the
antenna changeover relay. It is located in different spots in different
serial numbered TR4's, but some are on the bottom of the chassis, near the
antenna connector. Others had it in the final compartment (watch for the
high voltage if you have to go in there, hi). The pins on these bulbs can
corrode (or the bulb be open) and you will get the symptoms you describe.
Have you cleaned the pins on this #12, and better yet, checked it for
continuity?? It will make receive VERY low, hi.
73 and good luck,
Don, WB5HAK

Hi Matt,
This isn't very technical, but -- my first TR-4, back in about 1974,
was about the same. (I've had a bunch of them in various versions since,
and should be more analytical -but--.) Back then as I remember, 10m
wasn't much, but did come open some. My TR-4 was like yours on 15 10m,
I just turned up the AF gain and worked a lot of folks. Maybe if I knew
more then I might hv helped it some, but it did well, and the friend I
sold it to worked the world with it, after I did. If you can hear some
more antenna noise when you peak the RF Tune ctrl, then you're getting
signals thru, and it's sensitive. It seems like you do hear signals,
maybe the same ones you hear on the SS rig, but not as much S-mtr
indication.
Take a look at the manual and do the RF alignment in the order they
recommend, you might peak it up some on 10 15. You can do it with the
xtal calibrator signal, don't need any special eqpt. If you need more
specific instructions let me know.
