[Dspace-tech] select E-people option

2007-05-24 Thread Jayan Chirayath Kurian
Hi!

When I try to view e-persons through the select E-people button option
it gives me an internal error. But other options like select group etc
works fine. The same error I get while creating a collection and trying
to give access to e-persons. Please suggest.

Thanks,

Jayan

Becos after upgrading i didn't find some of the new features like
Link to admin area in the navigation bar when logged in as an administrator.

If i have to apply the patches for this. can anybody explain how to do that.

i am using Dspace version 1.4.2, the latest one.
I just downloaded the source and followed the command for upgradation from

Is this enough to upgrade.
or do i have to apply some patches for this.
why becos one of the new features with the latest version is
there will be a link to admin area.

Unfortunately, no. There is no specific sort key set when the
bitstreams are resolved in the database (i.e. Bundler.getBistreams())
so the ordering is always based on the database and can change
unpredictably as bitstreams are added/removed and when the database
upgraded. We've had discussions about assigning a sort key, but
nothing came out of this yet.

One possibility would be to add sorting into the taglibrary such that
the bitstreams were placed into an intermediate datastructure like a
TreeMap and key'ed on the column the user selected to sort on. Then a
configuration parameter could be added to control what the default
sort column was.

Jim,

Useful info. I've linked to the list of sysops from

I couldn't figure out how to do this within internal wiki [[ ]] markup

to the group=sysop) so it looks like an external link []. Please fix this
if you know how.

The larger issue of the lockdown--and whether to install a
captcha--remains.
Robert, is this sufficient documentation for now? Or what else would you
recommend?

you can see who is who isn't a DSapceCadet, but it's probably

That's odd. You should only have to run ant update, copy the new WARs

Hi Jayan,

option
it gives me an internal error. But other options like select group
etc works
fine. The same error I get while creating a collection and trying to

I don't know if this is related or not, but I had a similar problem when
I was working on our AD authentication integration - I can't remember
the exact cause, but I think it related to the ePerson table getting
corrupted during failed account creation (there was some bit of it that
wasn't quite working at that stage). I think accounts were being created
but the email address field wasn't being filled in.

Anyway, I went into the ePerson table and made sure that all the entries
had both an email address and a Net ID value (this was my development
system so there weren't too many accounts), and that fixed it.

Hope that helps.

[Dspace-tech] RE : Re: Persistent identifiers in DSpace -- thoughts please

2007-05-24 Thread Dupriez Christophe
Hi James!

I fell in a situation related with your message.

Under Windows, if you want to show an Internet page without using a special
API or calling a program, you can write:
  START http:...
The only problem is that the URL must comply with Windows rules:
  * no quotes around it (shame on START!)
  * no spaces within it (shame on CMD interpreter with specs inconsistent with
the permitted spaces within Windows file names)
  * no special characters that the Windows command interpreter interprets:
%x is interpreted as a parameter replacement (so %28 gives 8 and not
( ! )
   starts a subcommand
  | etc.
So I had to use ultra-nice URL:
  * restricted to basic 7bits ASCII
  * No spaces (may be they could be replaced by +)
  * None of the following characters:  ( ) [ ] { } ^ = ; ! ' + , ` ~
* %, *, ?, \ and quotes () should be excluded too
  * # is used to separate document URL and inside document location
  * | (pipe) is used by Unix
  Remains:
arobase(@) : but it may fool some other parser, don't you think?
dash(-) dot(.) slash(/) underline(_) digits letters
So this brings you to a unix path name style of URL which is nice EXCEPT
that it is hierarchichal by nature and does not provide a nice way to combine
independent parameters (coordinates on different information axis) like
journal=xxxauthor=yyy

So I would recommend a Unix path name style for a URI with the dash to
separate words and the underline to separate a parameter from its value. For
instance:

/browse/item/collection_main-library/journal_clinical-toxicology/author_jones-m
  /get/item/12345678

Method would be stated first, then object type then precise ids and then
parameters_values.
parameters_values should have a fixer order, defined system wide, to be sure
that the same operation does not have multiple different URLs.

For D-Space, my need was to start an advanced search from a 16bits Windows
application: because of the above limitations, I was obliged to stick to full
text search (which is not that bad).

I have done something similar in another application, where I generated the
corresponding sitemap and submitted it to Google. The site was fully indexed
within a month! (http://db.amazone.be: you can try in Google:
site:db.amazone.be -inurl:cgi The
removal of CGI is to remove old style URLs from the search result...

If you find this message useful, please forward to the community as I am not
at my office and therefore I cannot post.

  Have a nice day!

The point of my email wasn't to find out which persistent identifier

we can make DSpace less dependent on one mechanism in a way that isn't
limiting.

Not sure which version of tomcat you are using, but in version 5 the
JRE_HOME can be specified in tomcat5.conf file. This will take effect when
tomcat starts on bootup.

You might double-check the rc level of your tomcat init, maybe you
need to move it later in the boot sequence.

2007-05-24 Thread Weinberg, Ben
Kyle, I did find . -name *.conf at the root of tomcat and there is nothing
there. I'm using tomcat 5.5
Mark, I am already running the bootup script from rc.local which is supposed to
load last :(

Here's is the syntax I used. I tried to create the JAVA_HOME in the script in
hope that it will export it in time but the echo statement is still not
returning it:
#! /bin/sh

/sbin/iptables -t nat -A PREROUTING -p tcp --dport 80 -i eth0 -j REDIRECT --to-p
ort 8080
su postgres -c '/blah/pgsql/bin/postmaster -D /usr/local/pgsql/data'
JAVA_HOME=/blah/SDK/jdk
export JAVA HOME
echo javahome is $JAVAHOME
su dspace -c '/blah/tomcat/bin/startup.sh'

Well, that depends on what OS it's to run on.

Gentoo Linux' Tomcat package comes with a ready-made startup script.
Configuration is '/etc/conf.d/tomcat-5.5' and startup is
'/etc/init.d/tomcat-5.5'. 'rc-update add tomcat-5.5 default' suffices
to get it started at boot time. It just works. (Shutdown is another
story.)

What OS(/distro) are you using?

Re: [Dspace-tech] DSpace Upgradation to 1.4.

2007-05-24 Thread Fox, Graeme
Or your navbar-default.jsp is being over written.
If you have dspace source/jsp/local/layout/navbar-default.jsp, and
that contains your edited version of the navigation bar from a previous
release, then that will get used in the ant build instead of dspace
source/jsp/layout/navbar-default.jsp which contains the new code for
displaying the administrator feature.

Link to admin area in the navigation bar when logged in as an

That's odd. You should only have to run ant update, copy the new WARs
into the webapps directory of your servlet container (probably Tomcat)
and restart it. If you don't see the admin link (beneath Edit
profile), then you aren't running 1.4.2.

If i have to apply the patches for this. can anybody explain how to do
that.

You don't have to apply any patches.

Hi Thiru,

the link to the administrative section is only visible in the default
navigation bar, when you're logged in as a user belonging to the
Administrator group. If you're logged in it is displayed as Administer

between Edit Profile and Help in the default navigation bar.

cheers

[Dspace-tech] IMPORTANT NOTICE: DSpace Subversion Trunk is now under active development for DSpace 1.5

2007-05-24 Thread Mark Diggory
Hello DSpace Community,

We have reached a very interesting point in our software's history
where we have really outgrown our current development practices and
find it neccessary to expand how the DSpace Source Code Management
system is used. To attain the goals that have been outlined in the
Architectural Review last fall we have passed into a phase where the
Trunk of the DSpace SCM needs to be devoted to more dramatic and
aggressive development. Last fall, at the Architectural Review, it
was determined that we had to find a solution that will allow for
more independent and controlled extension of DSpace. This solution
was coined the Addon Mechanism and several prototypes evolved to
explore various implementation solutions.

This is an important notice to alert the community that the
Subversion trunk has changed to adapt a new source-code
organization and build system, this new build system is presently
incompatible with the older ant based DSpace build mechanism.

If you have been using the DSpace subversion trunk (http://
dspace.svn.sourceforge.net/svnroot/dspace/trunk/) to handle merging
your production maintenance against. We highly recommend that you use
the current stable maintenance branch instead, it is located at:
http://dspace.svn.sourceforge.net/svnroot/dspace/branches/
dspace-1_4_x The 1_4_x maintenance branch will be kept compatible
with the existing 1.4.x build process and is the best solution for
present production needs. It will always be guaranteed to be
reasonably backward compatible with any customization you may have in
the 1.4 track.

Meanwhile, in the trunk, we are now solidifying the new build system.
We expect that this may change unpredictably as we seek out the best
possible solutions for the new AddOn mechanism and welcome both the
Manakin and LNI codebases under the umbrella of the new DSpace
Foundation. You can look forward to the 1.5 release of DSpace to
have many new features. It will provide a dynamic and versatile
mechanism for including your institutions branding and customized
extensions.

Please do forward this email onto your development and DSpace support
staff and/or cross post to any other dspace list-services, forums or
user groups, including a translation if possible for any
international lists.

thank you,
Mark Diggory
