Re: [Dspace-tech] Messages.properties
Hi all, if you want to customize the existing Messages.properties no matter what language the files are placed under: [dspace-source]/dspace/modules/jspui/src/main/resources e.g. [dspace-source]/dspace/modules/jspui/src/main/resources/Messages.properties [dspace-source]/dspace/modules/jspui/src/main/resources/Messages_fr.properties no need for an extra directory. You got to run mvn [clean] package, ant update and redeploy your application for the changes to apply. Note that this will affect only jspui related events. Scripts run in batch mode for example will still use [dspace-source]/dspace-api/src/main/resources/Messages* Hope that helps Claudia Jürgen Allen Lam schrieb: It is better not to touch the source directly. Re: [Dspace-tech] citations, journals, volumes, issues, articles and dublin core (Andrew Marlow)
Dear Dublin Core is on that level not granular. Therefore it is also a problem of DSpace. I hope that in version 2.0 finally other and better metadata formats can be supported like MODS. We worked around the problem by using the the dc element bibliographicCitation with specific qualifiers volume, issue, stpage, endpage, and some qualifiers for proceeding papers. This has many advantages. While presenting an adapted submission forms based on document type, users could easily enter the data without making errors. Also we concatenated automatically these qualifiers in identifier.citation, giving it always a standard formatting. Aslo the availability of more granular metadata makes it possible to create a more refined MODS. We did some developments for version 1.4.2. We are aware that they are difficult to use by outsiders. Therefore we started working in the summer on an alternative submission plug-in for version 1.5. But the programmer did not finish the job. You can find our developments at: http://www.uhasselt.be/bibliotheek/dspace/dspace.htm. You can also test it out at: http://193.190.8.15/odin with login dspace and password dspace. I hope to work further on the submission plugin in the next months. In the meantime other can use the code if they want it. According to current discussions this sort of data, combined with a few other things such as the page range within the volume, should be put in the citation metadata. The trouble is, there is no agreement yet on how to do this. See http://www.mail-archive.com/dspace-tech@lists.sourceforge.net/msg03473.htmlf or examples of what has been discussed in the past. From what I have seen there is a long way to go before there is ever agreement on how to do this. But several people have raised the fact that this causes difficulties in setting up a DSpace whose articles are organised as journals, volumes and issues. Using communities and sub-communities is fine for small libraries but this does not scale. I am thinking of how to do it for millions of articles and thousands of journal titles. One way is to have all the articles in a collection for a given journal and for metadata to hold the volume, issue and article number information. But again, everyone does it differently. Is there any chance that DSpace could add an additional schema to take care of this please? I think that would be better than waiting for the dublin core standard to address this. That might take forever. If this was done the extra schema would be shipped with DSpace alongside dc. This would enable people to develop new XMLUI themes that used the new schema to display journals by volume, issue etc in a standard DSpace way. -- Regards, Andrew M. http://www.andrewpetermarlow.co.uk -- next part -- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... -- -- Open Source Business Conference (OSBC), March 24-25, 2009, San Francisco, CA -OSBC tackles the biggest issue in open source: Open Sourcing the Enterprise -Strategies to boost innovation and cut costs with open source participation -Receive a $600 discount off the registration fee with the source code: SFAD http://p.sf.net/sfu/XcvMzF8H -- ___ DSpace-tech mailing list DSpace-tech@lists.sourceforge.net https://lists.sourceforge.net/lists/listinfo/dspace-tech End of DSpace-tech Digest, Vol 34, Issue 70 *** -- Open Source Business Conference (OSBC), March 24-25, 2009, San Francisco, CA -OSBC tackles the biggest issue in open source: Open Sourcing the Enterprise -Strategies to boost innovation and cut costs with open source participation -Receive a $600 discount off the registration fee with the source code: SFAD http://p.sf.net/sfu/XcvMzF8H ___ DSpace-tech mailing list DSpace-tech@lists.sourceforge.net https://lists.sourceforge.net/lists/listinfo/dspace-tech

Hi Felipe, yes you'll need an input-forms_es.xml. If you work with different forms for different collection and quite regularly change the form-map best put this in an extra file and just include in the input-forms.xml and input-forms_LOCALE.xml. Re: [Dspace-tech] PDF text extraction
It took some digging but this issue has been resolved. I am reporting back to this list because a few people have expressed interest. At Larry Stone's suggestion, I verified that pdftotext (part of xpdf) was able to extract text from my scanned PDF. I also re-ORCed the PDFs using Acrobat 8 Pro, and found that media-filter was able to extract the text with no problem. Realizing that the problem was with my OCR app (JRA Publish, which is really great for creating batches of super-small PDF and DjVu files with highly accurate OCR), I contacted the lead developer and learned that a similar issue had been reported earlier. It turns out that PDFbox was looking for the ToUnicode flag in the OCRed text, and failing when it was not found. My copy of JRA Publish was a few years old, but the new version included the flag that PDFbox needed to extract text from my files. Along the way, I also found a helpful document in Michigan's DeepBlue repository that provides some best practices for scanned and born-digital PDFs. Anyone interested in creating better PDFs should take a look here: http://deepblue.lib.umich.edu/handle/2027.42/58005 Eric Luhrs Lafayette College On Tue, Feb 17, 2009 at 5:05 PM, Eric Luhrs elu...@gmail.com wrote: I just created a collection of 72 PDFs, mostly from scanned image files, but with several born digital files too. I was disappointed to learn that PDFbox was unable to process the scanned documents even though they contain searchable text. The files were created using a third-party OCR tool, but I am able to copy and paste the text using Acrobat. I understand that DSpace is limited by what PDFbox is able to process, so my question is, are there any guidlines for PDF creation to help ensure that PDFbox can read them? For instance, maybe it only understands certain versions of the PDF language, or certain types of compression. Any suggestions? I figured I'd try here before contacting the PDFbox community.
