Re: [Dspace-tech] ???jsp.mydspace.main.heading7??? on Dspace 1.5.1 export

2009-04-16 Thread Claudia Jürgen
Hi Lucy,

this is a missing line in the Messages.properties files.

Just change:
[dspace-source]/dspace/dspace-api/src/main/resources/Messages.properties
or if you already are using a customized Messages.properties file
[dspace-source]/dspace/modules/jspui/src/main/resources/Messages.properties

add the following line:
jsp.mydspace.main.heading7 = Exported Resources

rebuild and redeploy your application.

Hope that helps

Claudia Jürgen

Re: [Dspace-tech] READ on groups

2009-04-16 Thread Mark Diggory
I suspect you are also ending up with the group in the Items
MUTATE_META or the parent collections COLLECTION_NNN_ADMIN
permissions. These would allow that group to edit the metadata as
well. Check the Policies in the Collection Edit view or the Item Edit
view to see which groups map to which policies/actions. If you post
what you find here, someone may be able to tell you if this is the

Re: [Dspace-tech] Making file uploading unnecessary into submission form

2009-04-16 Thread Claudia Jürgen
Hi Islam,

this is a configurable option.
In [dspace-source]/dspace/config/dspace.cfg you got the option

# Whether or not we REQUIRE that a file be uploaded
# during the 'Upload' step in the submission process
# Defaults to true; If set to 'false', submitter has option to skip upload
#webui.submit.upload.required = true

uncomment and set it to
webui.submit.upload.required = false

Set this way the file upload will not be mandatory.

Hope that helps

[Dspace-tech] DSpace workshop at OR2009

2009-04-16 Thread Michele Kimpton
Apologies for cross posting-

The DSpace Foundation will host a workshop on Thursday afternoon at
the Open Repositories conference. This workshop will feature three
sessions,
providing updates on both DSpace 1.5.2 and DSpace 2.0, as well as an
interactive panel discussion.

The DSpace 1.5.2 presentation will focus on new functionality since
1.5.1, and will provide guidance on the upgrade process. The future
of DSpace 1.X releases will be discussed.

The DSpace 2.0 presentation will introduce the new services based
architecture, and include a walkthrough of the core functionality.
The new versions of JSPUI and XMLUI will be introduced.

The interactive discussion will feature an open conversation among
DSpace users, repository managers, developers, and a panel of DSpace
committers. Both practical concerns with current DSpace releases, and
ideas for future directions will be considered.

Please go to https://or09.library.gatech.edu/workshops.php for

Re: [Dspace-tech] Performance issues with bitstream checker

2009-04-16 Thread Tom De Mulder
On Tue, 14 Apr 2009, Ruijgrok, P.T. (Peter) wrote:

 I had serious performance problems with the bitstream checker, running
 Dspace 1.4.x
 We have +320.000 bitstreams and increasing continously.

Sadly, the current DSpace codebase has some serious scalability issues.
(And Java's MD5 implementation isn't the fastest, either, but that's not
the main culprit.)

For our instance, which has a separate server hosting the filesystem
(which itself resides on a SAN), I wrote a Perl script to do the
checksumming. It runs continuously in a loop, and manages nearly 500,000
bitstreams in 6 to 10 hours, depending on the load on the fileserver. It
uses the md5sum binary from solarisfreeware.com.

It puts almost no load on the database, because it only queries the
checksums from the bitstream table once, at the start. Output is logged
continuously, and our local Nagios server monitors for any checksum
errors.

This also has the advantage that it doesn't load the (Tomcat) webapp box,
which already has enough work to do.

It also means that the same script can run on our backup servers (which
also use disk; we couldn't manage with tape).

We've taken this approach with other things as well, such as our
thumbnails (which aren't using the DSpace code, because we wanted to
separate something as user-interface-centric as that from the actual
archive contents; the DSpace code was also just too slow and just crashed
our server).

 checker -d 1874/12233 (collection handle) processes approximately

 bitstreams / hour

 So running the checker every night for eg 10 hours is not
 possible.

 Cause ( I think):
 --
 select bitstream_id
from most_recent_checksum where to_be_processed = true
order by date_trunc('milliseconds',
 last_process_end_date),
bitstream_id ASC LIMIT 1;

 This statement requests the next bitstream to check and it takes +10
 seconds to find the next bitstream on our 320.000+ dspace.

 I don't *know* what is causing this, and I'm not yet a DBMS
 performance expert, but my eye is attracted to the ORDER BY clause.
 The monitor is having to build a temporary table of some probably very
 sizable subset of 320.000 records, and sort it. There is no index on
 last_process_end_date. That may not be significant, but I suppose
 that the query planner might be able to eliminate the sorting if that
 column were indexed. It might be able to make other optimizations as
 well, but I'm just guessing.

My first suggestion would be to take out that call to date_trunc().
Even if last_process_end_date is indexed, the results of truncating it
won't be. It's unnecessary and probably a significant performance hit.

So, time

select bitstream_id
from most_recent_checksum where to_be_processed = true
order by date_trunc('milliseconds', last_process_end_date),
bitstream_id ASC LIMIT 1;

against

select bitstream_id
from most_recent_checksum where to_be_processed = true
order by last_process_end_date,
bitstream_id ASC LIMIT 1;

and see what the difference is.

[Dspace-tech] Polish cartoon image collection

2009-04-16 Thread Mark Ludwig
We have a potential DSpace project involving
historical cartoons with captions in the Polish language.

I am looking for possible approaches to this.
We have the images in jpg files and want to add them to
a DSpace collection. We'd like to employ a Polish dictionary for
spell-check.
I know there are FireFox add-ons for the Polish spell-check, so we might
enter
the items one-by-one. This seems pretty tedious, though.

Has anyone used something else to build the dublin core, using a spell
check,
to caption an image collection? Is there anything to bundle the meta data,
table of contents and
image item file into the type of directory the DSpace import likes?

Thanks,
Mark

Hi Karen,

The normal issue that causes this is if you have been running the importer as a
different user to the user that is running tomcat, or another user has been
changing files (maybe running the filter-media cron job as root etc). Check
that all of the directories under [dspace]/assetstore/ are owned by the correct
user.

DSpace randomly selects a set of directories to put a new file in, and if one
of these happens to not be owned by the same user you are running the importer
as, then it won't be able to write the file, and will stop. So check they are
all owned by the correct user or that you have the correct permissions to write
to them.

Because Dspace randomly chooses the directories to write the file to, the
importer will stop and different places randomly.

Hope this helps,

Yes, thank you, this was what was generating the error. I was trying to use the
item handle instead of the collection one.

However, now that I've got past that, I'm getting this error:
java.io.IOException: No such file or directory

I've tried uploading a smaller subset (the full batch has over 800 files), and
it keeps stopping three or four bitstreams in (a different one each time). Any
ideas?

Thanks,

Hi Karen,

Is 3029/2039 definitely a Collection? This error gets thrown if you try to
deposit items into a handle that is an Item, rather than a Collection.

Hi,

I'm trying to do a batch import of files to a particular etd in our collection,
but I keep getting the following error:
Destination collections:
Exception in thread main java.lang.ClassCastException: org.dspace.content.Item
at org.dspace.app.itemimport.ItemImport.main(ItemImport.java:341)

This is the command I'm running (I've switched out the ids):
/dspace/bin/dsrun org.dspace.app.itemimport.ItemImport -a -e 2039 -c 3029/2039
-s import -m /mapfiles/mapfile_ball -t

This is my directory structure:
import
001
contents
dublin_core.xml
various files to upload

We're running Dspace 1.3.2. I double-checked all the log files and didn't see
any errors for the time that I last ran the command.

I'd appreciate any help or suggestions!

Re: [Dspace-tech] Index-Init failed

2009-04-16 Thread Stuart Lewis
Hi Jeff,

This is a bit of a shot in the dark, but what settings do you have in
dspace.cfg for the search indexes? They should look similar (but not
necessarily identical) to:

search.index.1 = author:dc.contributor.*
search.index.2 = author:dc.creator.*
search.index.3 = title:dc.title.*
search.index.4 = keyword:dc.subject.*
search.index.5 = abstract:dc.description.abstract
search.index.6 = author:dc.description.statementofresponsibility
search.index.7 = series:dc.relation.ispartofseries
search.index.8 = abstract:dc.description.tableofcontents
search.index.9 = mime:dc.format.mimetype
search.index.10 = sponsor:dc.description.sponsorship
search.index.11 = identifier:dc.identifier.*
search.index.12 = language:dc.language.iso

This guess is based on the error message Caused by:
java.lang.ArrayIndexOutOfBoundsException: Array index out of range: 1 at
org.dspace.search.DSIndexer.clinit(DSIndexer.java:200) because line 200 of
DSIndexer is where those search indexes are stripped into their constituent
parts for processing.

[Dspace-tech] Oracle and DSpace 1.5.1 and ILIKE (again)

2009-04-16 Thread Pottinger, Hardy J.
Hi, we are currently running DSpace 1.5.1 (release install, not source)
in production, with Oracle as our back end. A message thread from March
25, 2008 to the dspace-tech list identifies the same problem we're
having (Oracle doesn't support PostgrSQL's ILIKE operator), and posts a
solution (DB-agnostic SQL replacement for the ILIKE operator). I also
see that SVN commit 2870, also made on March 25, asserts to solve this
problem.

However, in our experience, running 1.5.1, we still see this error. A
recap: in the XMLUI, when one clicks the
People link under Access Control, the following exception is thrown:

  java.sql.SQLException: ORA-00920: invalid relational operator

if you look in the trace, the source of the exception is:

  at org.dspace.eperson.EPerson.searchResultCount(EPerson.java:326)

So, my question is, did SVN commit 2870 get rolled back before 1.5.1 was
released?

To work around this issue, we've been using the JSPUI as an admin
interface. Which actually is going to come in handy since we're in the
process of implementing the Minho stats add-on, and that only supports a
JSPUI interface. However, it has always bugged me that a big part of the
XMLUI admin interface just dies whenever we try to use it.

Are there any other institutions running DSpace and using Oracle for a
back end that have noticed this behavior? What was your solution?

Alternatively, you can frontend tomcat with apache httpd with proxy_ajp and ssl

Hi,

I have been trying to setup https support for tomcat6 and found strange
behavior:

The https port is set to 7443, but I could not bring up the service using
https://localhost:7443/jspui.  It works with http://localhost:7443/jspui!
This behaves the same as http://localhost:8080/jspui.

Is this what we should expect ?
