[Dspace-tech] Upload of Bibliographic Data

2009-08-28 Thread Alexander Wagner
Hello!

Maybe this has been solved in the past and I'm just unable to find it.
Then a pointer would be helpful.

Given, I have a set of bibliographic records in BibTeX or EndNote
format. Given also, these records contain associations with locally
stored PDF files. That is, I end up with an association of Metadata and
the digital objects in either BibTeX or EndNote/RIS format.

Given, I want to import all this right away into DSpace, and ideally,
I'd allow the user himself to do this. Some Upload my bibliography.

Are there tools for this available yet?

Point is: DSpace ingest is done nicely, but graphically and I've to
key in a lot of data. It is acutally quite time consuming. On the other
hand, most scientists have the bibliographic data already at hand as
they use them in their publication process. It is a bit difficult to
explain them that it is required to key them in again into some web
forms and that the only automatism is copy paste.

A more concrete example. Say you work in High Energy Physics. You submit
your papers ot arXiv.org, anyway. Now, if I want all these papers in the
local repository as well the best way to go would be to either

* Fetch the bibliographic data from arXiv by means of OAI-PMH (trivial)
and move them on to DSpace (how?). Hook up the PDF and the ingest is
done. (Similar things hold for PubMed btw.)

I could imagine an upload by ID where you could just key in the
arXiv(pubmed)-number, the rest can be done by the system automatically.

* Use the authors local BibTeX record, upload that one to DSpace, hook
up the PDF done again.

Does such a system exist already? I think it would improve usability for
the endusers (and therefore acceptance) considerably.

[Dspace-tech] UPDATE: DSpace online community event: Outstanding issues for 1.6 - Tuesday 1st September 2009 6PM GMT

2009-08-28 Thread Stuart Lewis
Dear DSpace community member:

First a big thank you to all the community members who joined in with the
first of the meetings we held earlier this week to go through the
outstanding bugs and issues in JIRA for DSpace version 1.6. The meeting was
very successful and we managed to cover about 1/3rd of the issues. A log of
the meeting is available at
http://duraspace.org/irclogs/index.php?date=2009-08-25

We have decided to hold a further two meetings at the same time / same
place, over the next two weeks (on Tuesdays, at 18:00 GMT).

We really would value your time and input. Without it we will won¹t know in
which directions to focus our developments. If you have bugs to report or
new features to contribute, please get these submitted to JIRA before the
event. If you would like to get more involved with the technical development
of DSpace, please come along and volunteer to address some of the issues
that we examine.

The event will take place online in the #duraspace IRC room. Details of how
to access this can be found at
http://wiki.dspace.org/index.php/DSpaceResources#IRC_channel

The next event is scheduled to start at 18:00 *GMT* on Tuesday 1st
September. A set of instructions about how the meeting will be run and which
issues are still to be examined is available on the wiki. Please take a look
in preparation for the meeting. If you would like to contribute but are
unable to attend on the day, please leave comments in the JIRA items, or use
the voting feature in JIRA.

[Dspace-tech] Dspace Internal Error when approving item

2009-08-28 Thread Hossain, Aaron
Hi all,

Once an new item has been submitted, it then goes through a workflow and
an administrator then approves the item.

ERROR: duplicate key value violates unique constraint
handle_handle_key

At this point we are getting an internal error, I think it may be trying
to issue a handle id that is already in use. A while back I did some
batch importing and had to assign/force certain handle id due to
conflicts.

Anyone any ideas how to get around this issue ?

Regards.

[Dspace-tech] handle-server setup (psql)

2009-08-28 Thread Lewatle Phaladi
Hi

As my [dspace]/dspace/bin/update-handle-prefix gives error, I also come with an
idea of modifying the handle table and change 123456789/ handle prefix

I tried on one collection it worked, but I need an SQL statement that will
update only 123456789 and leave other value, If you can check the values in
handle table and specifically handle column start with prefix and followed by
id like
123456789/7135

SQL statement that can alter our prefix (123456789) only in that column and
leaves the id (/7135)

I was using the statement :

Table name is handle
Column name is also handle

dspace= UPDATE handle SET handle = '85642/7178' WHERE handle =
'123456789/7178';

that worked for updating single item,
we need to update them simultaneously.

Lewatle

Hi Lewatle,

In your [dspace]/bin directory, there is a script called update-handle-prefix

If, for example, your new handle is 858585:

[dspace]/bin/update-handle-prefix 123456789 858585

This will update the old handles with a default handle prefix without bothering
your new, correct items/collections/communities.

Cheers,

Kim

I was setting up handle server for my University, and everything went well in

All the above files copy them into one folder with a name of your choice

on my case I also copied the folder(that contains the files) into my directory
eg /export
then they look like

My question is , is there a way that we can bulk import data in any format in

Re: [Dspace-tech] U. Minho Stats package error

2009-08-28 Thread Joseph Greene
Hello Daniel,

That did the trick. I just did as you said by dropping the 6 tables and
re-creating them with longer character restrictions.

Not sure but I think it may have related to the dc.rights field, which
seems to be collected by the stats package to show items accessed by 'access
type', but in our case we use the dc.rights field to record copyright
information, so naturally it wasn't what the system was expecting. I'm not
too concerned that this stat doesn't work, the system simply doesn't display
it.

You've saved me countless hours, thanks again.

Joseph

Subject: Re: [Dspace-tech] U. Minho Stats package error

Hi Joseph,

Minho stats copies some values of metadata into its own tables for
indexing. In DSpace the length is unlimited, but minho has a cap of 200
chars, so it gives an error when copying if your DSpace metadata is
bigger than 200 chars. Expanding the field_value column in the
following tables should fix the error when aggregating (we set ours to
2000 chars but that's probably overkill):

stats.view_metadata_month
stats.view_metadata_coll_month
stats.view_metadata_comm_month

stats.download_metadata_month
stats.download_metadata_coll_month
stats.download_metadata_comm_month

If you use non-standard metadata fields you may also want to check that
it's indexing the correct fields. I think by default it does
date.issued, title, and contributor.author. But if you've moved/edited
fields it may be looking in the wrong place. You can see the list of
fields it's indexing via running this db query.

select * from metadatafieldregistry where metadata_field_id in (select
metadata_field_id from stats.metadata_aggreg);

Hope that helps,

Has anyone encountered the following error when trying to run the

would really appreciate the help-- I've gotten it to work this far, would
love for the whole thing to be working. I'm up to my ears in the code trying
to trace it back, but this pgsql procedural language is new to me.

 Here's the error:

[Dspace-tech] versions of postgres and dspace

2009-08-28 Thread susan teague-rector
Hi all,

We're currently running 1.4.1 for dspace on linux and postgres
PostgreSQL 7.4.19

We're moving to a new linux server next week; I'm going to keep dspace
running at 1.4.1 for now...but I wanted to upgrade postgres since 7.4 is
older.

Does anyone forsee problems with the dspace database DDL syntax ?

Thanks in advance,

Susan

If you're interested in the DSpace batch submission command line
function detailed here, Item Importer and Exporter:
http://www.dspace.org/1_5_2Documentation/ch09.html#N13795
Then let me suggest an Excel tool that makes the process of creating
submission packages very easy.

Detailed directions available on our wiki, with a download link at the
bottom of the page:
http://sites.google.com/a/ohiolink.edu/drmc/bulk-submission

If however you're interested in non-Dublin Core descriptive metadata,
you'll want to read the DSpace documentation, Metadata Schema Registry:
http://www.dspace.org/1_5_2Documentation/ch05.html#N11B71

And the good folks at the Texas Digital Library have an excellent set of
instructions here: What if I need to import metadata in a schema other
than Dublin Core?

I hope this helps,

I believe the Mime Type can be changed in the administration interface under
Formats. There is a license format that can be changed. This would also
change the default license from plain text to html text. What are the negatives
impacts to the default license?

Note: It looks like the logo issue mentioned by Mark in the link reference
