Subject: [Dspace-tech] Join us in welcoming Jeffrey Trimble and Larry Stone as
new committers

Dear all,

It is with great pleasure that the DSpace committers group would like
to announce two new additions to the group: Jeffrey Trimble and Larry
Stone. Please join us in welcoming them!

Jeffrey Trimble is currently the Systems Librarian at Youngstown State
University in Youngstown, Ohio. His responsibilities range from
tracing network cabling under the carpet to Unix administration on
their various AIX/LINUX servers. He oversees the coordination of the
local Integrated Library System (ILS) with the statewide OhioLINK
system. Additionally, he has the primary responsibility for the three
DSpace instances at the university, including RSpace, the repurposed
DSpace software acting as an eReserve service for the library.

In the DSpace community, Jeffrey has been instrumental in improving
the DSpace documentation for release 1.6 as the Documentation
Gardener. In an effort to weed and feed the documentation, he has
tested various components and suggests changes and specifications when
the components doesn't work as expected.

Larry began contributing to DSpace in 2005, through work on several
grant-sponsored research projects in the MIT Libraries' Technology RD
group. Since May 2009 he has been working for Harvard University
Library as the primary architect and developer of its open-access
institutional repository, DASH (Digital Access to Scholarship at
Harvard - http://dash.harvard.edu/). Much of his work with DSpace has
been in the area of interoperability and external interfaces. He has
wide and varied interests in software development, including a
previous brush with digital libraries through a couple of Dienst
implementations and the old NCSTRL (Networked Computer Science
Technical Report Library) project.

Best wishes,

Stuart Lewis (on behalf of the DSpace committers group)

Re: [Dspace-tech] Google Analytics and DSpace 1.5.2 part 2

2009-09-23 Thread Graham Triggs

Hi,

It won't be the upgrade to 1.5.2. Google Analytics tracking works via
Javascript in the browser - so as long as the code appears correctly in the
HTML, and can be executed, then it will track.

And in this case, the code does appear correctly. But it isn't being executed.

Hacking a saved file of the html, it looks like this line:

script
src=http://www.territorystories.nt.gov.au/themes/TerritoryStories/js/chrisdomroll.js;
 /

is causing the script processor to not execute the call to Google Analytics
that is just below it. If I remove that reference, it does call the GA script.

Regards,
G

Should have said this as well.

We have another stats system for our site, which is on the same network.
Before the upgrade the Analytics stats and our inhouse stats where only
about 100 hits difference. But after the upgrade the differences have
been over 10,000 hits. This is what made us sit up and wonder.

[Dspace-tech] Can you limit search index updates to overnight cron processing in DSpace 1.5.1?

2009-09-23 Thread Thornton, Susan M. (LARC-B702)[RAYTHEON TECHNICAL SERVICES COMPANY]
We have a large repository (currently 251,708 items) and are currently
experiencing performance issues when doing online Item adds, modifies, or
deletes. I'm thinking that this may be caused, at least in part, by the online
index-updating.

Is there a way in DSpace 1.5.1 to specify that you don't want your search index
to be updated in the online application and that you will only update it in a
nightly cron (index-update)? I thought maybe I could accomplish this by
commenting out these two lines in dspace.cfg:

event.consumer.search.class = org.dspace.search.SearchConsumer
event.consumer.search.filters =
Item|Collection|Community|Bundle+Create|Modify|Modify_Metadata|Delete:Bundle+Add|Remove

This didn't appear to work though. What did happen was that online updates
stopped working. For instance, if I tried to modify the value of one of the
metadata fields for an item, I wouldn't get any error(s), but the update did
not take.

Thanks in advance,
Sue

Hi Susan,
I'm not sure if the problem we were having is related to yours since
you're dealing with .jpg files (we have all .pdfs), but we saw lots of similar
errors prior to switching from the use of PDFBox to xpdftotext and
xpdftothumbnail. When we were using PDFBox, approximately 10% of the documents
in our repository would not filter due to errors that looked suspiciously like
the ones you're getting. Now that we've switched to xpdf, 100% of our
documents filter successfully.

I'm not sure that this is related, but what's happening is that on the
item view, I can see the word 'thumbnail' but there is no image there.
If I log in and click on 'edit' to see all metadata, I can view the
 generated thumbnail.

 See an example here: https://digarchive.library.vcu.edu/handle/10156/1349

CALL for Entries for the DuraSpace SPARC Open Access Week Contest:
Highlighting Repository Stories Worth Sharing

Have you been a part of establishing or maintaining a unique digital
repository that provides open access to a collection that was
previously not used or under-used? Do you enjoy showcasing your
repository?s content and the cool tools that encourage use of the
materials? Do you have anecdotes about how access to
resources from your repository changed someone?s life, or their
thinking on an issue, or contributed to a breakthrough idea? Please
consider sharing your passion and knowledge of collecting, curating
managing and sharing digital repository resources from every corner of
the globe by entering the DuraSpace SPARC Open Access Week Contest and
telling your story.

Of the more than 700 DuraSpace (http://DuraSpace.org/) repositories
worldwide many provide open access to their online resources for users
and patrons. The aim of the DuraSpace SPARC Open Access Week Contest
is to celebrate your organization?s commitment to online development
and dissemination of diverse?and often hidden?digital assets by
describing unique cases and serendipitous uses that make remarkable
things happen.

Judy Breck writes in her introduction to the Golden Swamp Web site
(http://www.goldenswamp.com/) which highlights the virtual ecology
that emerges in the open Internet: A global golden age is trickling
across our threshold and will very soon pour in through our doors and
windows engulfing us all. This tsunami is grand news.

Please help DuraSpace share your ?grand news? by highlighting your
hidden treasures and how they are used. Whether your repository
features three-dimensional historic objects that turn in space,
photographs and artworks, unique media collections, historic
documents, scientific artifacts, out-of-print volumes or any other
type of digital object please consider telling your story about how
these culturally significant resources have helped to shape the global
knowledge landscape.

[Dspace-tech] Some translation issues

2009-09-23 Thread Jaime Rave
Hi, my name is Jaime Rave and I’m implementing the DSpace Software for the
Universidad del Norte in Barranquilla, Colombia.

Right now I have almost everything working, but there I’m having some
problems on the home page. The first one is that I have a menu to select the
preferred language (Español, Englsh) but instead os Español it appears as
español. I’ve been looking around all the source code and I’m not able to
find where can i change that Word. The other Word is in the frase “Esriba el
texto a buscar en DSpace.” It should be “Escriba”. I am supposed to change
it in the Message_es.properties but until now i have not found that file.

I have downloaded the dspace-1.5.2-src-release.tar.gz
http://sourceforge.net/projects/dspace/files/DSpace%20Stable/1.5.2/dspace-1
.5.2-src-release.tar.gz/download from sourceforge. So any help would be
really appreciated.

Thank you in advance.

Hi,

If you want Google to track your web site, as least you should enable
Google to see it.
No one other than yourself could see your localhost web sites.

Hi Deb,

I installed the Add-in and created a document as per their specifications. But,
the top ribbon does not display any ‘AddIn’ tab
as shown by Pablo in his YouTube demo that is linked in your blog. This tab is
required for uploading to a repository.

I suffer from a similar problem on one of my computers. The tab appears in the
ribbon when I first install the add-in (and select the 'yes, show me the
readme' option at the end of the installer), but after I close Word and re-open
it, it disappears. I don't have that problem on my other machine where it works
faultlessly.

One of the developers had replied that they have successfully uploaded to
Dspace, Fedora, EPrints etc.
How could that be possible without the patch you’ve mentioned about?

They may have used the public DSpace/SWORD test instance which has the patch
installed (http://dspace.sowrdapp.org/). If you want to try depositing to it,
download a pre-configured template from
http://blog.stuartlewis.com/2009/07/04/direct-from-ms-word-to-dspace-via-sword/
(see the penultimate paragraph).

Re: [Dspace-tech] reindexing question

2009-09-23 Thread Allen Lam
Hi, Lucy,

It seems you have some misconceptions that should be made clear first...
- indexing in dspace has nothing to do with Google index
- google analytics is not for making your contents searchable in google

If you want your contents be searchable in google, open your door wide
to let goolgle robots crawl your website.
Actually there are a lot more robot senders other than google, e.g. msn,
yahoo, ask, sogou, Most robots will visit your site uninvited.

You could make robots live easier by:
- telling them you have a site you want them to index
- do not block robots access
- made html sitemaps
- and other tips you could find in the dspace wiki page

[Dspace-tech] item mapper

2009-09-23 Thread Lyn Amery
Hi all,

I have a real need to use item mapper, but I don't make use of

any author field, so can't browse the items. I've tried changing

itemmap.author.index in dspace.cfg to other browse fields, but

I still get blank results in item mapper.

Is there another way to use item mapper? Could I use some sort

of command-line, rather than the menu-y, web-based method?
