Hi Jason

Thanks for your explanation, I also suggest free solution as we will not
afford buying modules.
Please sent me the URL that I can visit and learn how to set up PDF View
to my repository if you have one.

Mark,

Not exactly. I am suggesting embedding one viewer within the
item-summary-view-DIM, a viewer that shows up specifically for the PDF
mime type. It would be great to do it for those other for formats, but
as you point out, it's against Google's terms of service.

For what it's worth, I think you guys at @mire have a much, much better
solution. For institutions that cannot afford it, the DIY Google viewer
solution I suggested might be helpful.

I have you to thank for suggesting that approach to embedding objects,
by the way. I think you mentioned before that embedding videos using the
HTML5 video tag could be achieved in XMLUI using stylesheet
transformations. It was a great idea. There are all sorts of mime-type
specific things that can be embedded using stylesheets.

That should be pretty easy in XMLUI using something like Google's

would be necessary using this method.

I'm pondering googles terms of service here:

http://docs.google.com/viewer/TOS?hl=en

http://docs.google.com/viewer/TOS?hl=enSpecifically... You may not use
the Service to develop a visual document search and preview application
which embeds multiple uses of the Google Docs Viewer in a single webpage
for DOC, DOCX, or PPTX filetypes.

Sounds somewhat like what is being proposed.

p.s. Please excuse a shameless but on topic plug...
We do provide an affordable option for document streaming / Page turning
on XMLUI ( http://atmire.com/docstreaming.php ). Our latest version
works within DSpace, creating individual pages for the viewer and
storing them internally.

[Dspace-tech] HistoryState and History tables

2010-04-28 Thread Terrance Davis
In dspace 1.5.2, the database_schema.sql script for oracle creates the
HistoryState and History tables. The postgresql database_schema.sql
script does not create these two tables.

Are the HistoryState and History tables used in the Oracle dspace 1.5.2
deployment, but not in the Postgresql dspace 1.5.2 deployment?

[Dspace-tech] SOLR statistics in XMLUI

2010-04-28 Thread Poulter, Dale
Good afternoon,

We have Dspace 1.6 working and the statistics show up as expected in the jspui.
However, the solr statistics do not appear in the xmlui. Are changes needed
in the DIM-Handler.xsl to get the statistics to appear? If so, are these
changes documented? Thanks for your assistance.

[Dspace-tech] Announcing the 2010 Google Summer of Code Student Acceptances!

2010-04-28 Thread Mark Diggory
DuraSpace Community,

Accepted students for Google Summer of Code™ have been announced!
Congratulations to all the students accepted for this year’s program.
The students accepted to this years DSpace GSoC 2010 may seem
familiar, we have two returning students, Andrius and Bojan who will
be working further on integrating their previous projects into the
next DSpace release.

http://wiki.dspace.org/confluence/display/DSPACE/Google+Summer+of+Code

GSOC10 - Add Unit Testing to DSpace
Dspace currently lacks unit testing, which harms the development of
the platform and makes easier to reintroduce past bugs while
developing. This project is a proposal to add a set of unit test
classes to Dspace, based on JUnit, plus some tools that detect issues
in the code so we can improve its quality. - Pere Villega

GSOC10 - Backport of DSpace 2 Storage Services API for DSpace 1.x
DSpace 2.0 storage mechanism provides convenient way to store DSpace
contents in various storage solutions. It is based on set of
interfaces for which various implementations are possible and some
beta releases already exist (Jackrabbit, Fedora, etc). DSpace 2.0 is
in its early stages of development and DSpace 1.x releases yet can not
take advantage of this new mechanism. To fix this, it is necessary to
port DSpace 2.0 storage interfaces to 1.x. I propose implementing this
backport. - Andrius Blazinskas

GSOC10 - DSpace REST API
Integration, testing, documentation and further development of DSpace
REST services for 1.x and 2.0 versions. - Bojan Suzic

GSOC10 - Storage Service Implementations Based on Semantic Content Repository
Develop DSpace storage service implementations based on semantic
content repositories (TripleStore). - Yigang Zhou

Team Project Strategy:

DSpace will, this year, attempt to pair mentor/student teams together
where projects overlap. The goal being to assure that individual
projects are aware of each other and solution sets are synergistic. We
expect not to allow projects to go off and work privately this year.
We think previous years have suffered because the students did not
actually assist one another int he process of vetting their work, thus
this year we are exploring setting up a requirement that students
participate in group IRC meetings in a manner that will challenge them
to interact with both mentors and other students to evaluate each
others work.

We will attempt to use JIRA for Each Project. Student and Mentor work
together to create tasks with time estimates that the student and
other mentors can participate on. Likewise, we will use the new
Confluence WIKI Space to manage all projects documentation. Finally,
all projects must exist in the scm.dspace.org repository.

This year we have a new listserv to manage mentor student
communication: http://lists.sourceforge.net/lists/listinfo/dspace-gsoc-student
but we still highly recommned that students and mentors utilize
interaction with the community wherever appropriate on the traditional
DSpace listserv and IRC channels.

DSpace developers List

Please be sure to use the *dspace-devel at lists.sourceforge.net*
listserv for getting feedback, technical details and project
development with the whole community.

IRC

There are two dedicated DSpace IRC (internet relay chat) channels
(i.e. rooms) on the irc.freenode.net server:

* [irc://irc.freenode.net#dspace] \- all ad hoc DSpace discussions and
live Q A (this channel is not logged)
* [irc://irc.freenode.net#duraspace] \- official, scheduled meetings
often will take place in this logged channel (this channel is shared
with other [DuraSpace|http://duraspace.org] technology projects)

This Years Calendar:

* Now - May 25th Community/Student Bonding Period
* May 24 Initial Payment Issued
* May 25 Official GSoC Start Date
* July 12 19:00 Mid-Term Evaluations Start
* July 16 19:00 Google Mid-Term Payments / Mid-term Evaluations Deadline

No changes are necessary. The link to the new statistics pages shows as a
option on the menu and is resolvable via the following URI path relative to
the Item.

Rendering has nothing to do with DIM-Handler in this case. You may check
your dspace.cfg setting to verify if your restricting it to administrator or
not. We are working on documentation here atm.
