[Dspace-tech] Last week for the February drawing!
There are 7 days left for the February KnowledgeBase content drawing! To be eligible for the February drawing: 1) Select any topic from the KnowledgeBase outline (DSpace: https://wiki.duraspace.org/display/DSpaceKB/DSpace+KnowledgeBase or Fedora: https://wiki.duraspace.org/display/FedoraKB/Fedora+KnowledgeBase). 2) Either write one outline topic (or simply update existing materials from the DSpace Course or the Fedora Tutorials) or record a brief screencast which walks through a topic/concept. 3) Post your content to the KnowledgeBase by February 29, 2012. See below for more details or email me with any questions. Good luck! Valorie Hollister Director of Community Programs DuraSpace vhollis...@duraspace.org Begin forwarded message: From: Valorie Hollister vhollis...@duraspace.org Subject: Contribute to the New KnowledgeBase and Win Amazon Gift Cards! Date: January 31, 2012 9:23:51 AM EST To: dspace-gene...@lists.sourceforge.net, dspace-tech@lists.sourceforge.net, fedora-commons-us...@lists.sourceforge.net Cc: dspacecommunityadvisoryt...@googlegroups.com Dear DSpace and Fedora User Communities, Do you have experience using DSpace or Fedora? Could you write a description of the Fedora Digital Object Data Model? Could you record a short screencast on how to maximize DSpace’s batch metadata editing feature? If so, you could win a $50 Amazon gift card! Beginning on February 1, DuraSpace will be holding a monthly drawing to encourage content contributions to the new KnowledgeBase (https://wiki.duraspace.org/display/KB/Welcome+to+KnowledgeBase). The KnowledgeBase is an initiative aimed at improving the training and educational resources available to the DSpace and Fedora user communities. Once it is populated with content, this wiki-based resource will help new users get a repository up and running as well as perform various basic administrative tasks using a variety of delivery tools (text-based guides, images, diagrams, screencasts, presentation slides, webinars, etc.). The usefulness of the KnowledgeBase depends on the collaborative efforts of the DSpace and Fedora user communities. For the next several months if you create content you not only help the community but you could win a chance to help yourself to something on your Amazon wish list! Drawing Details Each month DuraSpace will put out the call for new content contributions to the KnowledgeBase. Contributors can create any type of content the wish -- text-based guides, images, diagrams, screencasts, etc. to address any topic under the existing topic outline for either DSpace (https://wiki.duraspace.org/display/DSpaceKB/DSpace+KnowledgeBase) or Fedora (https://wiki.duraspace.org/display/FedoraKB/Fedora+KnowledgeBase). All entries must be posted to the appropriate wiki page by contributors by the last day of the month. All entries will be validated to ensure submissions meet the minimum entry requirement which is either, 1) a complete text guide for an existing outline topic or for an additional supplemental topic, or 2) a complete screencast for one outline topic/subtopic, approximately 5 minutes in length. Contributors may use adapt/update previously published material (The DSpace Course http://cadair.aber.ac.uk/dspace/handle/2160/615, Fedora Tutorial https://wiki.duraspace.org/display/FEDORACREATE/Tutorial+1+-+Introduction+to+Fedora, etc.), although appropriate attribution should be footnoted. A random drawing will determine a winner of that month's $50 Amazon gift card, which will be awarded within 7 days. Anyone outside of DuraSpace employees/contract employees is eligible to participate. Individuals may enter the contest more than once in the same month to increase their chances of winning and may also win for multiple months. Take a Look The KnowledgeBase was developed in consultation with the community and was designed to allow for as much flexibility and community contributions -- however large or small -- as possible. Content is easy to contribute using the familiar DuraSpace wiki environment. Simply edit or add pages the same way you do anywhere else on the wiki. Any suggestions you may have for making the content more useful, more relevant for the community is always welcomed. Either use the Comment section at the bottom of each page or email Valorie Hollister at vhollis...@duraspace.org. [Dspace-tech] How do I clear the Subject cache?
Hello everyone, I have a lot of old Subjects in my DSpace repository that I want to clean, I no longer have any Objects with catgegorized within these Subjects. How do I clear this cache? Because I can still see the Subjects if I choose Browse by subject, although there are no objects associated with these Subjects. [Dspace-tech] RUCSTSpace Digital Repository Missing Submissions
Greetings Dspace Community, Our institution, Regent University College of Science and Technology; the first private science and technology institution in Ghana began using the DSpace platform, which has been beneficial in ensuring open access for journals and research material produced by the university. We have however encountered a problem whilst editing the Issue Dates of one of the published entries. I notice that the Issue Date form upon clicking edit when logged in as Administrator, is formatted by default as Month - Date- Year, eg ( 02-28-2012, for 28th february, 2012) and as such, I have followed this pattern for all submissions. However, I decided to try inserting a date in simple text format eg, 28 February 2012 and since then, have had about 19 scholarly publications missing from the list of Submitted publications when viewed using Title. The link to the digital repository is below. I would kindly request you followed it, Clicked on Title Scrolled onto the next page which is supposed to show article no's 21-40. You will find only one Article there and a blank space below. It appears the 19 missing entries are mostly from the Community Speeches and the Collection President and CEO. I kindly wish to request assistance in resolving this problem. [Dspace-tech] Solr Statistics
Hi, We run DSpace 1.6.2. Solr seems to be running, I've entered the command wget http://127.0.0.1:8080/solr/statistics/select?q=*:* and it's coming back with a HTTP request sent, awaiting response... 200 OK. The only files I can find with statistics in them are in the /opt/dspace/reports/ directory. Does this sound correct? Also, we're using xmlui and I can't access these stats online at all, only by copying them down from the server. Again, does this sound right? I'd really like to know if they can be obtained from the web interface. Also, are the statistical reports any better in DSpace 1.7 or 1.8 please? [Dspace-tech] DSpace REST API: SQL error (500)
Hello, I am attempting to use the REST API against a test repository. I am using dspace 1.8.0 and Oracle express. My repository is working fine (using the xmlui, I can add, change, and view communities, collections, and items). I've checked out and built the REST API after having changed its web.xml to point at my dspace.cfg. I can get to all the documentation (e.g., http://192.168.56.111:8008/rest/describe and yes, I am using port 8008 since oracle apex is listening on 8080). When I attempt to retrieve any communities (e.g., http://192.168.56.111:8008/rest/communities.xml), collections, or items, in either json or xml format, I get 500 - Internal server errors. I've set the logging level to FINE and verified that the proper dspace.cfg is working. I've searched the dspace open issue database and the web but haven't found anything. What am I missing? Re: [Dspace-tech] DSpace REST API: SQL error (500)
Hi Maury, this error refers to the problem with the database access, connection cannot be established. Can you check the contents of org/dspace/rest/servlet/DS16DirectServlet.java, method startProviders? Maybe it is not initialized there. [Dspace-tech] authority control in DSpace CSV import?
Hi Stuart, I've been searching but I cannot find any definitive information - does your metadata-import tool allow to specify authority values? I happily and successfuly use the metadata import tool as the only input to DSpace and I'd like to keep it that way. I'm also starting to investigate how authority control (for author names only) works. I couldn't find a definitive answer if and how I can use metadata-import to add/change these autority values, so I thought I'll ask you directly. Thank you in advance. Re: [Dspace-tech] DSpace REST API: SQL error (500)
Thanks for the response, but I'm not sure what I'm looking in that java file. In the startProviders method, I found the following code: // for dev testing only COMMENT IN WORKING ENVIRONMENT if (config.contains(dspace.dir)) { config = /devel/dspace/config/dspace.cfg; } which was *not* commented so I commented that code and rebuilt. Sadly, there was no change in the behavior. The method builds the entityProvider list. Is there supposed to be a database initialization there? That seems unlikely. If the web.xml file under the dspace-rest/webapp/WEB-INF directory points at my dspace.cfg, why wouldn't it connect to the database using the jdbc connect in db.url? I noticed the pom.xml for the dspace-rest code has ojdbc14 under Oracle db support. Is that correct?
