[Dspace-tech] Error choosing CC License, in Catalan

2012-10-25 Thread RUIZ MORENO, ROBERT
Hi everyone,

we use DSpace 1.7.1 with XMLUI interface.

Our instance of DSpace has 3 languages available: Spanish, English Catalan

If we start a submission in Catalan language, when we arrive to CC License
Step and clic on button that moves to CC page, it moves to:

*URL: http://creativecommons.org/license/*
Server Error* An error occurred. See the error logs for more information.
(Turn debug on to display exception reports here) *

The strange thing is, if we do the submission while navigating in Spanish
or English, the CC License Step redirects correctly and all works fine.

In our logs don't appear any error or warning message.

Any help?

Thanks in advance.

here's how you can turn on debugging (don't forget to turn it off afterwards):

You should be able to find the exception causing it in the logs.

Hi Robert,

There are some bugs in 1.7 that may be the source of your problem. I
guess you already applied this one:
https://jira.duraspace.org/browse/DS-1090.

Another problem I found some time ago was that If the button that sends
the user to the Creative Commons web page to select the license contains
accented characters, DSpace generates a wrong POST URL
which ends up with a server error in Creative Commons web. It's already
fixed in 1.8, but you may want to fix it by just removing accents from
the string, like in the patch attached.

Re: [Dspace-tech] (no subject)

2012-10-25 Thread Darren Arsenault
Hi all,

(JSPUI, 1.8.0)

I have been asked to make a change to the way that our DSpace instance works. I
have been asked to change the system so that users may not view content that
they do not have any permissions on. In other words, if there were a collection
that I had no permission to access, then I should not be able to see a list of
items/sub-collections in said collection, nor should I be able to view any of
the metadata—I shouldn't even be aware that it exists.

I do not know how to implement this, short of setting up a private AND a public
facing instance of DSpace—has anyone made such a modification to the system? Is
it possible? Any advice would be appreciated.

Thank you for your time. Good-day and be well.

I'm afraid this is currently the easiest way. This question comes up
once in a while, but noone has submitted any code to DSpace to support
this out-of-the-box. You can find some previous discussion here [1].

There was some work done at University of Cambridge to turn it into a
dark archive, but I think it would be outdated (incomplete) by now.
There was one more specific page but this is all I can find now [2].

Ok, I think I have it now:

(1)You make a change to
config/spring/discovery/spring-dspace-addon-discovery-configuration-services.xml

(2) Reload /solr in tomcat

(3) Run
 ./dspace update-discovery-index

(4) Rolad / in tomcat

I see what I want now.

One more question, if I'm using /solr, do I still have to do /dspace
index-init? Is lucen used at all. This is an important question, because
sometimes I have to make changes to the metadatavalue table using SQL, and
I alwasy run /dspace index-init afterwards. So I guess if I'm interested
in using solr, I would need to run both

/dspace index-init
AND

I'm not sure what you're talking about. I think there is only one way
in each version to change the number of displayed recent submissions

solr.recent-submissions.size was a DSpace 1.7 option in dspace.cfg
In DSpace 1.8, it was done in
[dspace]/config/spring/discovery/spring-dspace-addon-discovery-configuration-services.xml
(property name=recentSubmissionConfiguration)
In DSpace 3.0, it has moved to
[dspace]/config/spring/api/discovery.xml (same property)

 Hi all,

if you want to collaborate on this, it would be best to create an
issue (or multiple issues) in Jira describing what needs to be done
and who's doing it. It will prevent duplication of work and allow
everyone to check the status of such work. It's also desirable to link
to code on GitHub from the issue(s).

You may also want to coordinate with Peter Dietz (should be on this
list), who has developed another statistics implementation (Elastic
search) in addition to Solr statistics (Mark Diggory will want to have
a say in that, too). It may turn out that there's a need for a
 framework supporting different statistics implementations/backends
(Solr, Elastic, Analytics, ...), while allowing to use the same
presentation elements (like graphs) with any of them.

I will report it to Jira and provide the temp solutions we have.
We are using Batch Metadata a lot when updating metadata only.
However, there are cases that we update both metadata and bitstream
and one single process is appreciated.

Thanks for the suggestion,

Otherwise it will easily be forgotten here in the mailing list.

Your description of the problem is pretty good, but you could also
offer some suggestions on how you think the problem should be fixed
(e.g. introduce a new switch similiar to --replace, that will only
 update metadata).

It's also possible that this behavior is by design and your issue
would be closed, but at least you'd learn why it's implemented like
 that.

Moreover, I suggest you to use the Batch Metadata Editor [2] for
metadata-only changes. It doesn't have this problem and is very easy
 to use.

Re: [Dspace-tech] Item batch import - replace problem

2012-10-25 Thread Ying Jin
Hi Richard,

Good catch. I talked with our curator about the cases that she will
request a replacement. It sounds like a match we can use to replace
bitstream only items. I am trying to figure out how to replace all
metadata without having to name list them all using ItemUpdate. As the
metadata editing goes to different people and they won't track which
fields are changed especially if they are just correcting the typos.

Thanks,

 Hi All,

We use DSpace batch import a lot and sometimes have to replace the
items to fix the metadata or content issues. However, we found the
replacement in itemimport is actually deleting the old item, adding a
new one and then having the old handles back to the item. It
 generates
several problems. First, it will delete all relationships, for
example, if the item is mapped to another collection, the mapping
 will
be gone after replacement. Also, when deleting the item, the item's
internal ID changed and it losts its connection with statistical
history. Some of our statistics will show replaced items internal ID
number since the ID changed and it can't match the item title.

The DSpace 3.0 is releasing next month and we would like to know if
 it
is possible to have the problem fixed in the new release.

Hi Rodrigo,

sure you can import it back. Take a look at:
https://wiki.duraspace.org/display/DSDOC18/Batch+Metadata+Editing

You can import it either from command line or from the web interface (but the
web interface has a configurable limit of rows that can be imported at once).

You can safely remove all metadata columns and leave only the one you want to
change. However, the id column must stay, and possibly some others
(collection, action), I haven't tried recently.

[Dspace-tech] SQL to export the thumbnail filename

2012-10-25 Thread Calloni, Rodrigo
Hello

We have DSpace 1.6.2 running XMLUI.

We are using the METS syntax to gather the thumbnail location for our items.
Here is one example:

http://digital.library.iadb.org/public/metadata/handle/iadb/74638/mets.xml

The thumbnail is shown here:

mets:fileGrp USE=THUMBNAIL
mets:file CHECKSUMTYPE=MD5 GROUPID=group_file_84330 ID=file_84570
MIMETYPE=image/jpeg SIZE=2909 KIND=Joint Photographic Experts Group/JPEG
File Interchange Format (JFIF) CHECKSUM=9d27ea67d2a89abbd7595132423cec7f
mets:FLocat LOCTYPE=URL
xlink:title=Shaping_the_Future_of_the_Asia_Latin_America_and_the_Caribbean_Relationship_.pdf.jpg
 xlink:label=Generated Thumbnail
xlink:type=locatorxlink:href=/public/bitstream/handle/iadb/74638/Shaping_the_Future_of_the_Asia_Latin_America_and_the_Caribbean_Relationship_.pdf.jpg?sequence=3/
/mets:file

Which gives us the following linking syntax for the thumbnail file:

http://digital.library.iadb.org/public/bitstream/handle/iadb/74638/Shaping_the_Future_of_the_Asia_Latin_America_and_the_Caribbean_Relationship_.pdf.jpg?sequence=3

This said, we would like to know if there is a SQL query that we could use to
get the thumbnail filename of all thumbnails (in this example I need to get:
Shaping_the_Future_of_the_Asia_Latin_America_and_the_Caribbean_Relationship_.pdf.jpg?sequence=3)

Thanks in advance for your help on this.

You can safely drop ?sequence=3, it works the same without it.

I can't imagine why you would need _only_ thumbnail names, I usually
need them with handle or item_id.

SELECT bitstream.name
FROM bitstream,bundle2bitstream,bundle
WHERE bundle.name = 'THUMBNAIL'
AND bundle2bitstream.bitstream_id = bitstream.bitstream_id
AND bundle2bitstream.bundle_id = bundle.bundle_id;

[Dspace-tech] Contexts on Dspace and Apache Tomcat6

argument against it and use the Contexts as highlighted here

http://www.mail-archive.com/dspace-tech@lists.sourceforge.net/msg13335.html

and we still get the same results.

Tomcat starts. When I install tomcat6-webapps and rename ROOT.xml in

Yes I did.

Just thought I'll ask because I can't think of anything else.

Re: [Dspace-tech] mets sip profile ingest

2012-10-25 Thread Sarah Potvin
A potentially related question as I investigate implementing preservation
and structural metadata in DSpace:

Is it possible to:

1) ingest an item into DSpace with a METS file
2) have DSpace crosswalk metadata from the METS file into DIM and
display/retain this DIM metadata
3) have DSpace store the original METS file
4) upon export, have DSpace export a METS file that combines the
originally-imported METS file, metadata generated upon import (such as
checksums, bitstream data, provenance metadata, etc.) and stored with the
item, and any metadata for the item that has been added or edited.

?

Thank you for any insight you can provide.

Now we're getting somewhere!

What's connectors do you have enabled in server.xml? Do you actually
have a connector on port 8080?

Connector port=8080 protocol=HTTP/1.1
...

I assume you do, otherwise this wouldn't work:

Tomcat starts. When I install tomcat6-webapps and rename ROOT.xml in
the contexts to _notROOT.xml it displays the It Works Tomcat page.

So the problem would be that Tomcat is running, but for some reason
doesn't give access to the DSpace webapps.

Did you know that there are actually 2 ways to specify context? One is
in server.xml and the other one is using so colled context fragments,
xml files in Catalina/localhost/ Which approach are you using?
Because you forst mentioned

 We tried to enter the
...
 directly on server.xml

and then you mentioned ROOT.xml, which is one of the context
fragments. The problem might be that you're trying to combine both.

Also, there are 2 logs, one is the tomcat log (last log is always in
catalina.out) and the other one is [dspace]/log/dspace.log. To debug
why a webapp doesn't load you need to look at the Tomcat log. Try
looking there again. If you can't make heads or tails of it, send the
relevant part (after restart) as an attachment.

DSpace where to find the file and the internal_id tells DSpace 2 things:
 1. which subdirectory in that store_number the file
resides (according to the first 6 digits)
 2. what the actual file name is

 What a mess!
Thanks for your reply - it was as I thought it was!

You may be lucky (as strange as it may sound) if you're getting whole
files, which would indicate that just the filesystem was corrupted,
not the contents of bitstreams. It should be possible to find the
right location for files.

If I were you, I'd make a list of all the files (find
/dspace/assetstore -type f) then look up their names in the
bitstream table, then take the corresponding checksum and run md5sum
on the bitstream to verify its integrity.

As for locations within assetstore, if the bitstream name is correct,
it's easy to find the directory by the first three numbers of
bitstream filename.

If bitstream filename is corrupted, it would be harder. You could make
a list of all their md5 sums and then do the lookup I mentioned in
reverse - find the bitstream filename by its md5 sum in the
bitstream table.

Good luck! Just ask if you're in doubt.

Not automatically, but easy to do. You can attach the original METS

 4) upon export, have DSpace export a METS file that combines the
originally-imported METS file, metadata generated upon import (such as
checksums, bitstream data, provenance metadata, etc.) and stored with the
item, and any metadata for the item that has been added or edited.

You'd have to do the combination yourself with the original bitstream
you stored. But why use the original METS file when you can have
DSpace to a DIM-METS transformation (dissemination), which is a
standard procedure?

OK. Just pick one.

 tail /var/log/tomcat6/catalina.out

The output is too short. It indicates that you just stopped Tomcat. So
delete the file, start Tomcat, wait until it's fully started (you can
watch it using tail -f /var/log/tomcat6/catalina.out), then attach
the whole file.

Thanks for the breakdown of possible functions, Helix84. I would be
interested in retaining the original METS file because it would contain
fields with no functional use in DSpace-- for example, structural metadata
or more detailed PREMIS metadata--that would not be imported into DIM.
Basically, I'm curious about the possibility of storing (and then
exporting) a fuller METS record with an item.

All my best,

You can create a crosswalk for transforming one metadata format to
another. These crosswalks can be used during ingest or dissemination.
I don't have much experience with using crosswalks with package
import/export (where you may have to write some Java code), but I know
it's easy enough to do the transformation between XML-based formats
using the new OAI in DSpace 3.0, where the crosswalk is an XSL
template (OAI crosswalks are for dissemination only). I'd go for it.

Sarah,
we made some testing about this issue in the past...
The import package was a SIP structure, each directory formed by the
bitstreams, the dublin-core.xml file, the mets.xml file and the content
file. The content file specified mets.xml --- bundle: METADATA.
The import was made with the SIP importer, via the command:
(dspace_directory_path)/dspace import -a -e userxxx -c 123456789/2479
-s (source directory)/Prueba2 -m (directory)\mapfile.txt er bitstrams

In this way, a normal import is made AND the original mets.xml is stored
as another bitstream (in a differentiated bundle, not the ORIGINAL one)
We also found a reference to a not-so-usual, but very promising
functionality in the dspace.cfg:

# Optionally you may configure Manakin to take advantage of metadata
stored as a
# bitstream. These metadata files should be inside the METADATA bundle
and named
# either MODS.xml or METS.xml. If either of the following options are
turned on then
# these files will be made available to the theme when rendering an item.
xmlui.bitstream.mets = true

In this way, some sections (amdsec and filesec or structmap, i can't
remenber) of the Mets-file were rendered by the UI.. (the results were
not optimal, in any case)

Sorry, we did not experiment with the exporting part... you should try
with Helix options

Best luck
Emilio Lorenzo

This will make the metadata accessible, but you have to make
modifications to your theme to actually say how you want to display
it.
However, this is also possible for any bitstream or remote file using
the XSL document() call or its equivalent.
