Re: [Dspace-tech] DSpace-tech Digest, Vol 79, Issue 41

2012-11-16 Thread helix84
Hi Rajat,

an Internal System error actually means that more information should
have been logged in DSpace or Tomcat log files. Unfortunately it's a
generic DSpace system message which does not provide the information we
need to help you resolve the problem.

Sorry I cannot provide more help, but unfortunately we cannot tell what
caused the 'internal system error' without information from the log files.

Here's a guide we wrote up to help people locate errors in logs:

Re: [Dspace-tech] Dspace Internal System Error

2012-11-16 Thread Hardik Mishra
Rajat,

Internal System Error: is very generic kind of error. It is just to inform the
end users about some problem with the functioning of the system.

You can always check Dpsace logs at /dspace-install dir/logs

It seems that you might have some problem with permissions.

Thanks

Hi,

I have a repository in dspace with which i am facing regular issues and
want to remove all bugs from the system.

Errors:

1. When I click on View / Open, it waits for sometime before giving me an
internal system error. What is the root cause for this kind of error and
what are the possible trouble shooting options that i have to remove this
error.

2. When i try to create a community / collection, it again gives me an
internal system error.

3. Errors also occur when i try to upload a document into the system.

Can somebody give me some pointers and possibly ways to work out a solution?

2012-11-16 Thread Needham, Paul
Hello helix84

Yes, we'd be happy to share the code that @mire developed. And, we would like
to get this functionality into a future release of DSpace as a configurable
'out-of-the-box' option.

If it's ok with you, I'll contact you again - off-list - to discuss in more
detail?

Cheers

Paul, that is some interesting work there! Central collection via OpenURL, with
deduplication and elimination of robots. I didn't know about it because I
wasn't at OR12. Do you have any code available? Are you planning to submit
something for DSpace 4.0? There's a lot of interesting things happening in
statistics these days.

Sure, that would be great. But right now we're busy with finishing the
3.0 release, so I don't work on new stuff. Please, contact me after we
release 3.0, which is curently planned for the end of this month.

Thanks for noting that, Bram.

Paul, it would be best if you used the time before the release to
coordinate with people participating in that ticket's discussion and
were able to agree upon a common implementation (because there seem to
be 4, including yours). That would be much much easier to accept. I
think the people from the RCAAP project are definitely worth getting
in touch with because they have a large number of participating
repositories. I don't know about the Germans and Belgians.

Re: [Dspace-tech] dspace 1.8.2, xmlui, and the branded JPEG media filter

2012-11-16 Thread Jason Sherman
helix84,

Thanks for the fast and info-filled responses. You have really helped me out!

On Thu, Nov 15, 2012 at 5:09 PM, helix84 heli...@centrum.sk wrote:
Ouch, this hurts my eyes. What's with the variablttln names? I'd also
shorten at least $context/mets:fileSec/mets:fileGrp into another

You got me there, my code was not very readable. I took your suggestions.

So is there anything you'd like to improve in this part?

I added in another test to ensure that lightbox code isn't produced in
the absence of a branded preview bitstream. I've attached an updated
template in case anyone is interested.

I'm not quite following. What are you trying to achieve?
 1) Didn't your numbering rules and my matching code work?
 2) I thought you made it work using the title attribute instead, so
what do you want to do here?

1) Yep, it's working like a champ for this case.
2) I was hoping to make a more general-purpose solution for derivative
bitstreams. If I create a new media filter, I'd like to be able to
mark it as a derivative and group it with the original. That way my
templates could access any derived bitstream in the same way as
thumbnails. It would make adding filters and adding their bitstreams
to the ui much more intuitive. Maybe this is a development issue?

I'd avoid modifying Java classes unless you really need to because
you'll have to remember to forward-port your changes on each upgrade.
The more such changes you make, the more reluctant you'll be to
 upgrade, trust me.

Sage advice, I'll take it. I've been tracking which files I've been
messing with. I think I'll revert them and move my experiments to
another server. It may make more sense to try to contribute to dspace
instead of managing local patches. That's a cart before the horse,
though.

Did you run mvn package (or mvn clean package) in [dspace-source]
or in [dspace-source]/dspace? The latter would rebuild only changes in
overlays and somesuch and wouldn't care about your changes in
dspace-xmlui. See quick build vs. full build here:

 https://wiki.duraspace.org/display/DSPACE/Rebuild+DSpace

Ah, maybe this was part of my issue. I made separate quick build and
clean build bash scripts based off the info in the wiki. Even for the
clean build, it says to start from [dspace-source]/dspace/. I updated
my clean build script to run mvn clean package from [dspace-source]
instead.

No need to run mvn clean package, but it may save you from some
nasty surprises, so I'd run it only if something doesn't work as
expected after mvn package (it's just quicker).

Noted.

I don't think the jars you built contained your changes (see above),
but there would be another gotcha - if you went around ant and did the
copying manually, you would need to copy them in 2 places - both
 [dspace]/lib and [dspace]/webapps/xmlui/WEB-INF/lib/

Also noted.

It will be easier to link to particular line numbers here if you want
 to point out something specific:

Good point. On line 695 of the item adapter class
[https://github.com/DSpace/DSpace/blob/dspace-1_8_x/dspace-xmlui/dspace-xmlui-api/src/main/java/org/dspace/app/xmlui/objectmanager/ItemAdapter.java#L695]
I made the following change
- if (TEXT.equals(bundle.getName()) || THUMBNAIL.equals(bundle.getName()))
+ if (TEXT.equals(bundle.getName()) ||
THUMBNAIL.equals(bundle.getName()) ||
BRANDED_PREVIEW.equals(bundle.getName()))

I thought that would cause isDerivedBundle to be set to true for
branded preview bitstreams and thus get assigned the original
bitstream's group id. It doesn't seem to alter the behavior though.
I thought that I had a problem with my build process, but I made your
suggested directory change and I still get the same result. Branded
previews are still getting unique group ids. Ideally there would be a
place to register additional bundles as derived, but again, this may
be creeping into a discussion more appropriate for development.

Thanks again. I was fairly stuck, and your responses helped get me unstuck.

[Dspace-tech] Support for semantic-web (RDF) metadata

2012-11-16 Thread Peter Sefton
Hi all,

I've joined the list for a little while as I am working on
a repository evaluation project for a client.

I am interested in support for RDF-ready metadata in DSpace in the context
of an established set of external name authorities able to supply URIs for
people, groups, subjects, grant-codes etc.

I have found a few pages on the wiki mentioning name authorities and
gathered that these were proposals for new functionality or discussions of
prototypes eg this
https://wiki.duraspace.org/display/DSPACE/Authority+Control+of+Metadata+Values

What is the status of this work? Is there name-authority support that's
semantic-web ready?

Regards,
Peter
