Re: [Dspace-tech] how to display view statistics beyond 7 months?

2014-09-18 Thread Claudia Jürgen
Hello Shixing,

the date intervall is at the moment hardcoded.
For the jspui it is set in:
[dspace-src]/dspace-jspui/src/main/java/org/dspace/app/webui/servlet/DisplayStatisticsServlet.java

 DatasetTimeGenerator timeAxis = new DatasetTimeGenerator();
 timeAxis.setDateInterval(month, -6, +1);
 statisticsTable.addDatasetGenerator(timeAxis);

This sets the date intervall to the type month, for the last six months,
including the current month, which thus leads to 7 months displayed.

It can be made configurable but then the ways it is diplayed has also to
be adjusted to allow for long time spans, breaking down to years and
then months.

Hope this helps

Claudia

Is there a default setting in DSpace to limit the display of View
Statistics at the bottom of each item to 7 months' worth only? If so, how
can we change that to allow for displaying every month, that is, from the
 very beginning?

 See an example at: http://d-commons.d.umn.edu/handle/10792/126/statistics
That item was first deposited in 2010 but only the last 7 months' stats are
 viewable by the public.

 Thanks,

Re: [Dspace-tech] Reconverting PDF's in assetstore to PDF/A

2014-09-18 Thread Webb, Nicholas
I also agree that modifying/discarding the originals is a bad idea. FWIW, in
our workflow (a small DSpace instance for institutional e-records) we convert
documents to PDF/A prior to ingest, then submit both copies in a single bundle
with original and preservation copy in their respective description fields.
We also include a note in dc.description.provenance that contains the basic
PREMIS semantic units describing the reformatting -- date, action taken, staff
member (Agent) who did the conversion, etc.

What tools do you plan to use to create and verify the PDF/As? When I was
setting up our workflow (~2 years ago), I found that only Acrobat XI could
consistently create valid (as per the Preflight compliance check) PDF/A out of
arbitrary PDF input. In our particular case, we receive PDFs from our
communications department which were created in InDesign and contain extensive
data on things like prepress color spaces. These require much subtle tweaking
to produce compliant PDF/A, and even previous versions of Acrobat tend to choke
on this.

Manual conversion in Acrobat doesn't scale, of course, so in the long run I'd
like to find an alternative option. I haven't experimented with the method
described in this Stack Exchange thread, but it might be helpful if you want to
build a curation task out of open source components:

Subject: Re: [Dspace-tech] Reconverting PDF's in assetstore to PDF/A

Subscribing Peter´s opinion, you should never loss the original
For the controversy, I rather move the original PDF to another bundle and the
converted PDF/A would left at the ORIGINAL Bundle

And add the needed metadata to document the change, at least add some lines
into a new dc.description.provenance (I know, there are better solutions, but
this is simpler). They would serve as a pseudo preservation-metadata-record

I wouldn't recommend altering/damaging your existing PDF's. That just sounds
like its inviting risk.

A better route would be to build a DSpace curation task, that is capable of
doing the automated PDF conversion, leaving the old PDF's in the ORIGINAL
bundle, and the PDF/A's going into a bundle such as CONVERTED.

Also, what conversion tools are you looking at? i.e. a Java library / remote
web service? Also, I'd take a look at the license, hopefully a compatible
license with DSpace (i.e. non GPL, non AGPL).

[Dspace-tech] Special characters/diacritics in indexes

2014-09-18 Thread Joseph Greene
Hello,
I have been trying to get an author's name to appear in the author browse
(http://researchrepository.ucd.ie/search-filter?field=author) but can't seem
to get it to work. The name is Ó Gráda, Cormac. There are plenty of other Ó
...'s in there (e.g. Ó hÉigeartaigh) that do appear for a search on 'Ó', but
for whatever reason, Ó Gráda does not appear.

(Prof Ó Gráda is quite prolific on Famine, Irish emigration, economic
history. We have 200+ of papers by him.
http://researchrepository.ucd.ie/browse?type=authorvalue=%C3%93%20Gr%C3%A1d
a,%20Cormac)

(I believe) I've ensured that the diacritics are UTF-8 (Ó and á) (they
weren't originally)
I've re-indexed (~/dspace/bin/dspace index-update)
DSpace 1.8.2

Ó Gráda does come up any way you spell it in
http://researchrepository.ucd.ie/browse (browsing by author). Not entirely
sure how I navigated to that though...

Any pointers?

Joseph

[Dspace-tech] embargo bug? second attempt

2014-09-18 Thread Bill Tantzen
All,
I encountered this issue in DSpace 4.1, and it's still hanging around
in 4.2. Still haven't seen any comments from this note I posted in
April:

All,

In DSpace 4.1 xmlui, in a collection WITHOUT the embargo steps
enabled, I am able to upload a file as usual -- the only input field
being the description. But during the review step, when editing the
just-uploaded file, the embargo options appear on the form. Entering
data in either of these fields does nothing, but they should not be
there in any case, right?

A quick search of jira did not find a similar report. Is this a bug,
or a mis-configuration of some kind? I do have another collection in
which both embargo steps are enabled...

Comments?
Bill

[Dspace-tech] DSpace 3.2 error while navigating collection

2014-09-18 Thread rdiascampos
Hi.

I have a collection with restricted access. It appears in the general list so unathorized users can still access the collection. When they do this they can read the collection is restricted.

Even so, they have a collection navigation menu they can click and get a "Resource not found" error. Is there a way to hide this collection menu?

I use DSpace 3.2 with Manakin/XMLUI

Thanks for any help.

In my case, I used Acrobat 8 preflight. Although it was producing
output without complaints and it wrote the PDF/A tag into the file,
when I ran a PDF/A verification on the output, it simply wasn't valid
PDF/A in a crushing majority of cases. YMMV.

[Dspace-tech] Dspace 3.2 bug submitting items: No Owning Collection or Handle created

2014-09-18 Thread Alcides Carlos de Moraes Neto
Hi all,

We're having this issue in our dspace installation, which is 3.2.
We have a collection with restricted access to a certain group.
We have been submitting items to it normally, both via the interface and
via command line.

But lately, new submissions from the interface look like they went fine,
but when I check the item in the Database, they have no Ownling Collection
(value is null), and no Handle was created.

I checked the logs, there were no warnings or exceptions. The interface
shows all messages for the submission steps just fine. We are using XMLUI.

Any insights? Thanks in advance
