[Dspace-tech] email errors
All, DSpace 4.3, RHEL6 VERY occasionally, I see warnings in the space log thrown by exceptions in notifyGroupOfTask() and notifyOfReject(). In these cases, the exception's getMessage() is null, so no explanation is available... Additionally, in every case, the addressees DO receive notifications 99.9% of the time. Any ideas? I'm thinking of adding a getStackTrace() to the exception clause here, maybe that will give me a clue. Re: [Dspace-tech] dspace 5.1 ImageMagick question
Actually, even though Andrea's fix gets us most of the way there, if an exception is thrown at some point before the method returns, some files may still remain in /tmp. Depending on the size of your /tmp and on the size of your repository this might still pose a problem... Re: [Dspace-tech] Error when attempting to shard-solr-index
This article on optimistic concurrency: http://heliosearch.org/solr/optimistic-concurrency/ explains (I believe) exactly what's going on... In SolrLogger.java, the .csv files created for insertion into the new shared indexes are composed using ALL fields -- including _version_. Any NEW document with a _version_ field will fail on update. Or am I misunderstanding something? If this is the case, I think one solution may be to specify a field list (excluding version) when querying solr by date during the creation of the filesToUpload List. The other solution would be to drop the _version_ field from schema.xml (and turn off the update log in solrconfig.xml), and optimize to drop the field. I'm not sure what this adds in terms of an insert-only index anyway. Thoughts? Cheers! Bill -- Dive into the World of Parallel Programming! [Dspace-tech] possible bug in SpiderDetector.java...
All, DSpace 4.2, xmlui After investigating some very low statistics since implementing version 4.2, I have found that the function isSpider() in SpiderDetector.java is throwing an error at line 208 because the variable candidate is null. When the matcher method is called on the null variable, an error is thrown, the function never returns, and the request does not get logged. I added an additional conditional at 208 to test for null: if ( null != candidate candidate.matcher(agent).find() ) { to prevent the error. The question of how there is a null pattern in the agents list is another issue -- I'm not sure how that happens. I'm using the out-of-the-box agents/example file, and as a matter of fact, the problem does not present itself on every startup. I have noticed in dspace.log that agents/example gets loaded 3 times. Is there a possible synchronization issue with ArrayList.add at line 174? At any rate, it seems like a good idea to test for a null value since users will likely add odd items to the agents file at some point. Comments? I'd love to hear 'em! [Dspace-tech] embargo bug? second attempt
All, I encountered this issue in DSpace 4.1, and it's still hanging around in 4.2. Still haven't seen any comments from this note I posted in April: All, In DSpace 4.1 xmlui, in a collection WITHOUT the embargo steps enabled, I am able to upload a file as usual -- the only input field being the description. But during the review step, when editing the just-uploaded file, the embargo options appear on the form. Entering data in either of these fields does nothing, but they should not be there in any case, right? A quick search of jira did not find a similar report. Is this a bug, or a mis-configuration of some kind? I do have another collection in which both embargo steps are enabled... Comments? Bill -- Want excitement? Re: [Dspace-tech] Missing items in collection
Well, I admit I'm not really clear on the big picture, but it looks to me as if the problem is in SolrServiceImpl.java in writeDocument(). The clause that calls the solr extract handler does not seem to add any of the record metadata without prepending 'literal.' to it -- specifically search.uniqueid! If you ignore that section of code -- for instance if you dumbly substitute the line if(falseCollectionUtils.isNotEmpty(streams)) for the original test on line 692, everything proceeds normally. Re: [Dspace-tech] DSpace 4.1 slow to submit/edit/delet item
I have noticed similar response issues, and in fact I posed a similar question some time ago. The question I had refers to the code in IndexEventConsumer.java at line 170 and 184. The commit parameter in the calls to indexContent() here (and only here) is set to true. Since solrconfig.xml has autocommit set to true, why do we bother to commit immediately (this can be slow)? I have found that changing this parameter to false drastically increases the speed of updates and deletes. I'd like to hear from any developers who had a hand in this particular section of code... [Dspace-tech] solr optimization?
DSpace 4.1, XMLUI Looking at solr's schema.xml, I am wondering why the fields fulltext and fulltext_hl are stored as well as indexed? Are these fields ever actually requested from solr by the dspace application? If not, it seems that it would be a significant optimization to simply index them and not store them... Otherwise, out of curiosity, I'm wondering where the stored value of these two fields are used by dspace. Thoughts? DSpace 4.1, xmlui... Is it possible to enable embargo on per collection level? That is, users uploading to Collection A will be presented with the embargo options, while users uploading to Collection B will NOT see those options? Or can embargo only be applied on a site-wide basis? From the docs, it looks as if the latter is true, but I would like to verify it! Thanks! Re: [Dspace-tech] missing messages.xml and upload/delete problems
Following up with more info on the problem I described on Monday last... On closer inspection of the logs, I see the errors I described occur somewhat prior to my delete request and therefore seem to have nothing to do with whatever my problem is. I am attaching the tail of my httpd, dspace, solr, and cocoon logs that will hopefully provide some better info. This is a plain vanilla installation of DSpace 4.1 with only minor changes to build.properties and dspace.cfg necessary to connect to the database, etc. The problem is that deletes take an excruciating amount of time -- 22 minutes in the example I am attaching. The hardware/software details are; RedHat Linux 6; 4 cpu, 16GB tomcat 7.0.50 java 7 (1.7.0.45) maven 3.1.1 ant 1.9.2 postgresql 9.2 Browser doesn't seem to matter -- I have used Chrome, Firefox, and Safari. No errors on the browser end. As you will see be checking the log files I have attached, NOTHING seems to be happening between the time I click 'delete' and when the community list reappears. During this time, my cpu usage is high, but memory usage is under 20%. Immediately prior to doing the delete, I optimized the solr search index. This is really weird, and I hope somebody will have time to take a look at the logs I have attached and point me in the right direction! More info available on demand, if needed of course. [Dspace-tech] Very slow delete (WAS: missing messages.xml and upload/delete problems)
Re: my previous posts about extremely slow delete response time. I think I have located the source of the slow down, in IndexEventConsumer.java, line 184: indexer.unIndexContent(ctx, hdl, true); Since autocommit is enabled in solrconfig.xml, is there any reason to set the commit parameter to true in this case? Indeed, setting it to false makes the response time instantaneous, as expected. Can someone explain why commit is true here? (nowhere else is unIndexContent() in this way...) Cheers! Re: [Dspace-tech] anonymous subscriptions
Thanks, that's exactly what I need! However, anonymous users cannot subscribe for email notifications. You must first register with DSpace / create an account (which also verifies your email address) in order to subscribe for email updates. This is the way it has always been (as far as I can recall). To allow anonymous users to subscribe to email updates is actually potentially problematic (unless you first have a step which first verifies their email address). We obviously would not want an anonymous user signing others up for notifications, or going in and signing up a mailing list for notifications (essentially spamming a list). There would need to be some form of validation that the person signing up for email notifications *owns* that email address. So, that's why it has been limited to persons who have a registered DSpace account. [Dspace-tech] browse by date off by one?
I'm trying to get my head around whether or not this is a configuration issue or something else. In dspace 3.2 (using solr), when I browse a collection by date, it is in descending order by default (by client request). If the user chooses to jump to a particular start date, say 2004, a solr query is issued that looks something like this: response responseHeader status0/status QTime1/QTime lst name=params str name=qbi_sort_1_sort: [2004 TO *]/str arr name=fq strNOT(withdrawn:true)/str strlocation.comm:12/str strNOT(withdrawn:true)/str strsearch.resourcetype:2/str strread:(g0)/str /arr str name=start0/str str name=rows0/str str name=wtjavabin/str str name=version2/str /lst /responseHeader result name=response numFound=271 start=0/ /response Which tells me that there are 271 records with bi_sort_1_sort = 2004 So far, so good. The second step issues the following query, using the numFound attribute of the 1st query: responseHeader status0/status QTime2/QTime lst name=params str name=flbi_sort_1_sort/str str name=q*:*/str arr name=fq strNOT(withdrawn:true)/str strlocation.comm:12/str strNOT(withdrawn:true)/str strsearch.resourcetype:2/str strread:(g0)/str /arr str name=start271/str str name=rows20/str str name=sortbi_sort_1_sort desc/str str name=wtjavabin/str str name=version2/str /lst /responseHeader which says about the same thing, except to start at the 272nd record which effectively eats up those items with a bi_sort_1_sort of 2004 and up and starts displaying records beginning with 2003-12-31 and lower; clearly not what the user expects. When the sort order is reversed, everything works fine. Is this a bug, or am I misunderstanding or mis-configuring something? Thanks for any pointers! Hi all! DSpace 3.2, jspui. Hi all! This may be a simple configuration problem, but I have not been able to find the solution in the docs... In DSpace 3.2, using Discovery, how do I make the Collection Hits consistently appear before Item Hits? Right now, it seems as if sometimes they do, and sometimes they don't and I'm not sure why. Re: [Dspace-tech] shibboleth problem
Here's a little more info and a workaround to my shib question from yesterday. From the the apache logs, I see that if I try to access a non-public url via http (while not logged in) such as /submit, I am redirected like so: GET /Shibboleth.sso/Login;jsessionid=F5680238949101C8B9537F54538D8CF2?target=https%3A%2F%2Fmydspace.edu%2F%2Fshibboleth-login from there, GET /submit and from there I continue to loop. If I simply to to /Shibboleth.sso/Login, I am redirected successfully to the dspace home page (via https), or if I specify a target, such as /Shibboleth.sso/Login?target=https%3A%2F%2Fmydspace.edu%2F%2Fsubmit this works as well. I guess my question is, in the first example, where does the target 'shibboleth-login' come from? Is this the desired behavior? I have lazysession.secure = true and while this seems to work with /Shibboleth.sso/Login, it does not seem to handle other non-public urls. Any thoughts? The problem seems to be when I attempt a restricted url with simple http: http://mydspace.com/submit/ Is this a problem with my IDP then? Is there any workaround via .cfg files? Thanks, Bill On Mon, Oct 14, 2013 at 2:53 PM, Bill Tantzen wile...@gmail.com wrote: OK, even after fixing my typo, the behavior persists. Over and over. The dspace log indicates a successful authentication, the correct eperson_id is found, but I never do land on a page. With lazy sessions set, I should never need to go to /shibboleth-login, correct? Again, any suggestions will be deeply appreciated! Re: [Dspace-tech] shibboleth problem
OK, even after fixing my typo, the behavior persists. Once again, what is happening is upon accessing a restricted url, like '/submit' or '/my-dspace' I am directed to my IDP for authentication as expected. But upon successful authentication, instead of going to the originally requested url, I am placed in a seemingly endless loop of being redirected to //shibboleth-login (yes, there are two slashes), from there to my IDP, and back to //shibboleth-login.
More info. I *am* able to login correctly if I point my browser /Shibboleth.sso/Login with lazysession.secure=true. The protocol is automagically transformed to https, and I am redirected to home page. If I do the same with a restricted url -- that is, specifically use https as the protocol, everything is fine. Re: [Dspace-tech] media filter question
Solved. In v3.2, bitstreamformatregistry.short_description for mimetype application/pdf is 'Adobe PDF'. However, in my installation (for some long lost reason) the short_description is simply 'PDF'. Therefore in MediaFilterManager.java::filterBitstream(), the test at line 556: if (fmts.contains(myBitstream.getFormat().getShortDescription())) never returns true, so no pdf files are ever processed. As a workaround, in dspace.cfg, I changed filter.org.dspace.app.mediafilter.PDFFilter.inputFormats = Adobe PDF to filter.org.dspace.app.mediafilter.PDFFilter.inputFormats = Adobe PDF, PDF and voila! Everything works. I could just have easily updated bitstreamformatregistry, but I was wary of breaking something else. Cheers! [Dspace-tech] invalid bitstream/object after upgrade
I am beginning the painful process of upgrading from v1.41 to 3.2, and stumbling right out of the gate. Here's my problem -- or the symptom anyway. I downloaded v1.42, ran ant upgrade, installed the war files and restarted tomcat. Everything (search, browse, view records) works fine until I attempt to view a bitstream at which point I see the following error: The identifier 57528/1/1965-165.pdf does not correspond to a valid Bitstream in DSpace. In addition, when viewing a collection, I can produce a very similar error by searching or browsing within: The identifier 151226/simple-search does not correspond to a valid Object in DSpace. The identifier 54870/browse-author does not correspond to a valid Object in DSpace. These are arbitrary handles, the problem exists for all of them. Needless to say, it worked fine before. Here's what I've attempted to solve the error. I exported the database, ran ant fresh_install, and imported the db. The results are exactly the same. So what I have now is an absolutely plain vanilla 1.42 dspace with the most minimal changes to dspace.cfg with the errors above. My postgres is v8.4, and the connector is v9.x Any ideas/suggestions?
