Re: [Dspace-tech] IMPORTANT NEWS: Important Info for Future Editions | Ranking Web of Repositories

Would it be possible for DuraSpace leadership to contact them to explain the
problems with their proposal? I agree that this seems only likely to diminish
the relevance of their rankings.

Ranking Web of Repositories

Hi, there is more cause for concern than just the handle issue (which is
alarming enough), re-read the announcement:

http://repositories.webometrics.info/en/node/26

They intend to no longer rank repositories running on ports that are not
cleartext (80 or 8080) which, I'm sorry, is completely wrong-headed. I will not
ask my users to send their passwords in the clear. It's not even open for
discussion. Even if we set aside the issue of login details, I am willing to
bet there are a fair contingent of researchers who would prefer to keep their
research activities out of a cleartext channel--despite the many concerns about
SSL being compromised, running a repository on port 443 is, I think, at least a
good-faith effort at securing the usage of the repository.

Is this port requirement an attempt to penalize institutions who embargo some
of their content? If that's Webometrics' desire, they will have to make a
better effort than to lump all port 443 repositories into that category.

It's a pity, I realize they have good intentions, but I think these decisions
will likely diminish the relevance of their rankings.

Hi Hilton,

It looks like a large proportion of DSpace instances would be excluded if this
proposal were implemented. It seems a bit over the top, I think we may reply
with a comment to that effect.

Cheers, Robin.

The Ranking is also a powerful tool for penalizing bad practices, with especial
emphasis in the awful naming proposals by software developers that ignore
librarian traditions and in many ways are going against intellectual rights of
depositing authors.

We truly believe the lengthy and useless addresses coined for the repository
items have a negative impact in their web visibility and affect the authors
will to deposit as it makes difficult the citation of full texts in future
papers.

I've found contacting Google Scholar directly often helps - they worked closely
with us when we were having issues.

Thanks for the response Tim - We are running 1.8.3 but hope to be upgrading to
4.1 sometime this year. I've read the SEO guide and it appears to me that we
are doing the right things (we have disabled the browse to robots, but are
using sitemaps, have google crosswalks in place and the metadata appears
correctly). Our link in Google are fine, its just scholar that doesn't pick
them up.

[Dspace-tech] OR 2013 Hackfest, Dev Challenge and Workshops - Signup Now

2013-06-19 Thread Shreeves, Sarah L
Open Repositories 2013 in Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island, Canada is less
than a month away (July 8-12) and is shaping up to provide a packed week of
presentations, panels, posters, demos, and user group sessions that should
interest anyone working with repositories and the digital information lifecycle.

OR Workshops

The first day of the OR conference, Monday, July 8, is dedicated to the
Hackfest and workshops aimed at a wide variety of audiences. The available
workshops include tutorials on repository platforms, updates on technologies of
interest to repository managers and developers, and discussions of current
topics in repositories and digital content management.

For a full list of workshops, see the conference schedule at:

http://or2013.net/program/session-schedule

Participation in OR2013 workshops is free with conference registration, but
you¹ll need to sign up in advance to ensure a seat in the workshops you want.
Once you¹ve registered for the conference, be sure to visit
http://or2013.net/content/workshop-signup to sign up for the workshops you¹re
interested in. And if you haven¹t already registered or booked your
accommodation, be sure to visit http://or2013.net/ to do so.

OR Hackfest and Developer's Challenge

-

We are pleased to announce that the Hackfest and Dev Challenge planning for OR
2013 is also in full swing. We have already received 3 great challenge ideas
that will stimulate your repository spirit and generate a creative sprint that
you and your Challenge colleagues will not soon forget. If that isn't enough to
get you to sign-up, then the over $8,000 in prizes to be awarded by our panel
of judges may provide some extra sauce. Prizes for this year's Challenge has
been generously provided by the Digital Library Federation [1], JISC [2], the
SPRUCE Project [3] and the Fedora Futures Project [4] - and we are expecting
some extra surprises on top of that.

How do I participate in the great Hackfest and Dev Challenge? We're glad you
asked, just follow these simple steps:

1. Register for the OR Conference [5], or if you've already done that get your
friends to do the same.

2. Sign-up for the Hackfest (taking place on Monday, July 8) and Dev Challenge
[6] so we can make sure we have enough beer and pizza to help get you started.

3. Read the Dev Challenge description and manifesto [7] and get ready to
participate.

4. Practice eating oysters [8] while you wax poetic [9] on your laptop to get
your repository elbow ready for the big event [10].

5. Watch for the release of the OR 2013 Hackfest and Dev Challenge Ideas [11].

6. Do your best to attend the all-day Hackfest on Monday, which will kick off
the Challenge and help build a creative team that will stay with you for the
rest of your career.

7. Take lots of pictures at the Challenge with you and your buds so you can
send them to you mom and dad. This is the most important part, but must be
preceded by steps 1-6 above to be the most effective.

Andrea -

You might want to talk to Bill Ingram here at Illinois - wingr...@illinois.edu.
He implemented this for working papers - see
https://www.ideals.illinois.edu/handle/2142/3520 for an example (Browse by
Series/Report). I can't speak to how ugly a hack this was though - he could!

Subject: [Dspace-tech] Configuring browse options on a per-collection basis?

Hi all,

recently I've come across several cases where it would be really useful
to set up browse indexes that work only for specific
communities/collections. For example, a browse by number in series
option for a collection of working papers or a browse by supervisor
option for a collection of theses. These browse options shouldn't be
shown in the repository-wide list of browse options, nor in the list of
browse options for collections that don't need these indexes.

Am I right to assume that this isn't currently possible in DSpace? I'm
about to hack something together that will fit my needs -- but from what
I can see at the moment this needs to be a reasonably ugly hack. Or am I
missing something?

cheers,
Andrea
